Counting sugars....

I am on a strict 1200 calorie diet. I eat as much protein as I can a day, a very good amount and I exercise daily. But I know I technically eat too much sugar. I have yogurts and granola bars(basically I eat whatever is low in calories) and some diet foods that have sugars in it....the thing is I really don't feel a need to count sugars. I am already very strict on my calorie and protein intake...I don't want ANOTHER thing to have to count all the time. I don't eat seriously sugary foods like cake or anything, but like I said my yogurts have quite a bit of sugar and my diet protein bars do as well...so far my diet plan has been working...do you guys count sugar? If so why? I am torn on if I should because I don't think I'd be up for limiting my usual diet plan even more...

I think you're overthinking. :)

If your plan is working and you're getting enough nutrition and you're happy with what you're eating, then ... what's the problem?

If you think you're eating too much sugar, then cut back on it some. Otherwise, just enjoy the fact that things are going well. :)

Hey! If you are concerned about too much sugar, you can always look for substitutes that use less, or that use something other than sucrose or high fructose corn syrup. But it doesn't sound to me like you get too much.

It's easy to get in a "spiral" of thinking you need to eat less and less. Resist! As long as your carbohydrates are mostly the complex kind, and you're getting enough protein, and you're above 1200 cals, you should be fine.

Don't forget that fruit and dairy contain naturally occuring sugars and those are fine. Just watch out for the added sugars that can be lurking in a lot of things. Don't just read the nutrition panel, because all sugars (both natural and added) are lumped together there, take a look at the ingredient list as well and try to keep those with sugar or one of those other 'ose' words near the top of the list to a minimum.
