Scared of the scale

I am scared of the scale because I am afraid that if I get on it knowing in my head that I have been working so hard that I will be UPSET  because it doesnt reflect what I think it should.

Anywho, how often do you weigh yourselves?

I got weighed about 3 weeks ago and I am thinking of waiting until my next doctor appointment in the middle of June:?:

I know. i do the same thing. but when i stop weighing i start gaining. So its a tough one. Its love/hate thing.

I try to weigh every week. But i end up weighing twice a day.

shelby897 04-22-2008 10:43 PM

Threw my scales away yesterday -- I'm too obsessed and, if they don't say what I want, I eat, if they say what I want, I eat.....

So, I do WW and weigh in every Monday with this, which will have to be enough for me -- I would love to be someone who can weigh every day just to track my ups and downs, but at this point, I am not capable of doing this :dizzy:

PinkyPie 04-22-2008 11:24 PM

It's really hard to think this way but... losing weight is not only about the number on the scale. I too am a bit scale obsessed but my goal now is to only go on once a week for my WW (online) weigh in. I feel good the rest of the week knowing I stuck to my plan (and that I ACTUALLY planned ahead!), that I went to the gym, that I'm feeling more energetic and positive...these are ALL things to take into consideration during the process.

If you are scared or worried, try to change your thinking to all of these other things and weigh in when you feel is best for you. If that means at your next doctor's appointment, so be it. No one says you have to get on the scale every day/every week.

I just like to know I am making progress in my weight..as of right now I havent weighed myself again so I dont know what is going on with lbs but I feel wonderful already. Im not tired all day and in need of an afternoon nap and I have been really chipper lately lol

traveling michele 04-23-2008 12:27 AM

If you are having more energy I bet you are doing well!
I am scale obsessed and I weigh myself twice a day. I wish I could weigh less frequently but I also feel the need to track myself.
I weigh in at WW once a week so maybe someday I'll just weigh in once a week.......too paranoid of gaining weight at this point in my life though....

This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about!!! I'm glad it's already having effect on you, it's bound to show up also on the scale!

It's nice to see that number too, but, again, if you are scared, then just wait until you are really ready.

JayEll 04-23-2008 07:51 AM

Those darn scales! Grrrrr.

Fat isn't gained or lost in a day, but over several days. Most daily fluctuations are simply water weight. So it's easy to drive yourself nuts over daily fluctuations.

Most programs like WW have a weekly official weigh-in. If you are someone who obsesses over the scale, then weekly would be the thing. Some folks only weigh once a month!

I know it's easy for some folks to fool themselves unless they check from time to time. Waiting until the middle of June--well, it's up to you, but suppose that you're off track and you weigh the same in June? I think I'd be really unhappy to find that out then.

So, maybe set yourself a "weight date"?

I actually rarely weigh myself. I take a good look at myself naked in the full length mirror about once a week and use that as my scale. I find that with all the weight training and fluctuations, I get too depressed when the scale doesn't move for me or it goes in the opposite direction that I want it to. I find I can see the subtle differences in my body week by week and it motivates me to keep going more than the scale does.

That is a really good idea, I like the sound of that. I would like to see the numbers on the scale go down but what is more important for me is feeling great, being healthy and looking good. I think I will try that

mrsaugie 04-24-2008 08:00 PM

i weigh myself when the mood strikes me. so it is very irregular. i actually like it because i have found that if i weigh myself weekly and do not loss anything for a couple of weeks i get frustrated and want to give up. i like to see progress. i am very impatient so i am actually surprised at how well i am doing.

mimosa08 04-24-2008 08:15 PM

Ok Ok well I admit I weighed myself yesterday. My scale said 225. When I weighed at the doctor about 2.5 weeks ago I was 140.

Im glad I weighed myself because my scale and the doctors scale is different plus it was cold outside when I went to the doctor and I had on shoes and a sweater and big pants. So now I know what I am naked lol.

Ija 04-24-2008 09:47 PM

Count me among the obsessed. I weigh myself once per day, which some would argue is too often. I see a lot of random fluctuation due to water retention, exercise, etc., but I think weighing myself also keeps me on task. Evaluating the fit of clothing is great for some, but I like seeing concrete numbers much more. I think it's the scientist in me. People should do what works for them. If that means weighing once a day, once a week, or once a year, then do it.

Rayelle 04-25-2008 12:41 AM

I am a compulsive weigher, if you will, but I am extremly terrified each and everyday (or several times a day) that I step on that scale. I just feel so disappointed if I see that I have gained anything at all. That then results in a binge!

melindad 04-25-2008 07:12 AM

I am one of the obsessed too :-) Weigh myself each day in the morning, but I know the feeling of being terrified to step on it when you are trying to lose weight.

midwife 04-25-2008 10:43 AM

Sheesh, guys. Pardon me while I climb up on my soapbox.

Nothing wrong with weighing daily if it helps you with your goals, so quit apologizing and using words like "obsessed!" When you look at the habits of successful maintainers, frequent (or even daily) weighing is a tool that supports long term success.

Daily weighing is a tool. For some people it is helpful, for others it is not. But stop apologizing!!

Whew.

(I don't mean to sound too ranty but I see too often posts where people say "I shouldn't weigh myself everyday". Where is that rule written? If it works for you, don't beat yourself up for it! If it causes angst, find another method of checking for progress.)

lifechange 04-25-2008 12:11 PM

I have to look at it differently this time around. The scale is now my friend. It is the only friend who will be honest with me. I do need to remember that somethings will influence the scale- weighttraining-more water retention, sodium, tom, if my hair is wet- so I will understand and not be frustrated
I started this time around being afraid of the scale. I didn't even want to get on and have a starting weight. Then the more I thought abut it I realized I would be devastated by my weight if I stepped on the scales 1 or 2 months down the road and saw the weight without knowing what it previously was.
So I stepped on the scale. I was devasted by the number. Thats life.
I weighed myself daily (first thing in the morning) and some days I would be happy and others frustrated. I considered not weighing myself daily. Maybe it wasn't good for me to be frustrated? Then I realized isn't it better for me to understand what my weight was daily so I wouldn't have a massive disappointment at the end of a week of hard work? So what is crucial for me is understanding what impacts my weight daily- which activities, sodium etc. Also having faith that I am doing the right thing. I am not cheating, I am exercising so I am losing weight and it just might take a few days for the scale to catch up.
I have lost and regained weight before so this time daily weighing is crucial for the rest of my life. It must become a habit for me, because I have a great skill at deceiving myself about weight gain- avoid looking in the mirror, pants shrunk in the dryer- you name it.

Welcome to 3FC, Lifechange!!

Mrs Snark 04-25-2008 01:18 PM

I weigh once a day (first thing in the morning). I don't feel obsessed but I do like that daily reminder that I have goals and they won't achieve themselves. Stepping on the scale first things puts me in the right frame of mind to go forth and conquer!

KateB 04-25-2008 01:25 PM

I have struggled with the whole "to weigh or not to weigh" issue. This is how I have resolved it and it is working for me.

The only weight I actually count is the one from the doctors office. Taken approximately once a month. That is the weight I "claim" and the weight my ticker reflects.

I DO weight myself daily at home. I choose not to "count" this weight as official. One of the reasons for this is...My scale is psycho.:dizzy: It has a mind of it's own. HONESTLY!!! About 2 weeks ago I stood on the scale staring at the dial, motionless, the dial slowly went up as I stood there. In the course of 2 minutes it went up 3 pounds. I have also seen it go down two or three pounds while I stand there.

So why do I even get on the dang thing??? :club: Well it helps keep me accountable. I also log all my food,:carrot::cb::broc: and all my exercise:woops::lifter::exercise:, so if the scale stalls for a long period of time (1 week or more):rollpin: I look at what I have been eating (too much salt, too much carbs?) or goes up slightly:mad: (TOM? more strength training? poor food choices??) I can corrolate those things to tweek my eating work out to keep my consistantly losing.

For those of you wondering...Well Yeah...It probably would just be easier to get a new scale.:goodvibes

Ija 04-25-2008 01:29 PM

midwife, I think some people feel like weighing themselves might not be a good idea because they get thrown off by the fluctuations from water retention and other factors. It's much harder to get a sense of your progress if you weigh yourself every day. When I see myself go up a pound from the day before, I get discouraged even though I know it's not a pound of fat. I consider myself 'obsessed' because I weigh myself every day even though I think it would be better to do it 2-3 times per week instead. The pull of the scale is too much --I just have to know!!!

midwife 04-25-2008 02:00 PM

I understand, Drina.

I'm merely pointing out that people should not feel sheepish or apologetic if daily weighing works for them. It may not work for everyone but people should not feel obsessed if it works for them.

PS And I get a great sense of my progress from daily weighing. Again, if it works, then folks should not feel apologetic. If I had a dime for everytime someone said, "I know I shouldn't weigh everyday, but...." on here, I would be on a beach right now. :) Each of us have our own tactics that support our journeys.

EZMONEY 04-26-2008 12:37 PM

I agree with MIDWIFE that too many times we get "kidnapped" by the number on the scale!

We are all different in our relationship to the ALL MIGHTY :goodscale SCALE

I find myself getting....:fr: freaked! over a pound or two increase...but, in reality......I already knew those  evil ones were going to show up

I weigh almost every single morning, if I am in town. In helps to keep me focused. If I am up a pound or two, it helps me to "remember" to make better choices....although sometimes I :crossed: forget...on purpose :(

As many have said ~ the focus needs to be on the healthy habits we are making and not the numbers! If we are focused on the :) GOOD THINGS :) in life...things that make us :) HAPPY and HEALTHY :) those  EVIL NUMBERS  will simply go away...say  bye-bye  ....in time!

If you are :fr: freaking out over what the scale says....GET OFF!

If the scale is a :) tool :) that you implement into your journey of better choices...well then....GET ON!

griffogrubb 04-26-2008 01:14 PM

I usually weight once a week, on sunday mornings. I wake up and weigh and take my measurements. I'm scared sometimes though, I'll admit that. Especially after I've had a difficult week with my diet, it's like I know that I gained 5 lbs or something. Stupid Scales

sh3l5 04-27-2008 08:59 AM

i weigh daily....
it helps me as an indivual to see if my weekly targets are guna be achieved....
if i gain some one day i will work harder the next....
4 me the scale gives me motivation....
i dont like the readings, so the more i weigh, the more i work and the more i loose....
prolly not the best way to do it but it works for me....
:)
