weird weight question

  • This may be TMI if you dislike talking about gas. (that means farts in laymans terms).

    Does gas weigh anything?

For instance, if you per chance ate a ton of broccoli and then were terribly bloated with gas and all gassy the next day, would that effect your weight?

    gas bloat, not water bloat.

    i'm confused!
  • Yes, all gases have mass, that is "weigh" something. Could you measurable change your weight through gas release? I don't think so.
  • lol!!

sorry, i'm not laughing AT you, i just think it's a funny question.
i'm going to say.. MAYBE. I eat a lot of fiber, and sometimes when i wake up in the morning the scale might say one lb heavier than i expect.. and then once um, everything has worked it's way out (LOL! sorry, i'm like a 5 year old when it comes to gas) i've weighed again out of curiosity, and the scale will give me a lower reading. I assume that's due to gas, but i don't know for sure. could be my scale.
  • Among the things that people trying to lose weight need to worry about, this is probably umpteen hundred billionth on the list...

Do a little experiment. Take an uninflated balloon and put it on a postage scale or a food scale and record the weight. Then, blow the balloon up and tie it, and put it back on the scale. Record the weight.

    Is there a difference?

  • Your body's gas isn't going to change the scale. While it does have a weight (just like any other gas... oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.) it's a trivial amount.

And I didn't even know they were Catholic!

Remind me to never attend that church.

I figured it was minimal and didn't make a difference. I was just curious. Sometimes i get a ridiculous amount of gas bloat that would be what most women would experience on their period by not being able to zip up pants. etc.
  • Have you tried Bean-O? It may work whether the problem is beans or not.

  • Last summer I began experiencing the most excruciatingly painful bloating and gas. I was also belching excessively. I couldn't keep my pants buttoned. The bloating even pushed my ribs outward so much I had to take my bra off - at work! I went to my doctor and discussed my symptoms. She diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. I've had symptoms since I was a child, but didn't know what it was. I'm doing much better now. I have medication to take when I get that queasy, bloated feeling. It has also helped control the (here comes the TMI) diarrhea problem. Unfortunately, it kind of makes the constipation worse. (Many IBS sufferers alternate between diarrhea and constipation. Not a fun way to live.)

Anyway, if the gas and bloating is a new problem you've developed since changing to a higher fiber diet, it should get better over time. If it is a problem you've had a long time, you should probably talk to your doctor about it.
  • I'm sorry I don't mean to laugh, but I've often wondered if extra gas would make you weigh less ... you know like a hot air balloon, maybe all that gas would give you a little lift!

I actually already have the IBS diagnosis.
