The Yo-Yo Diet

No, it's not some new cool diet where you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days... it's what I have been doing for the past 30 YEARS. And I think it is part of the reason why I'm having such a difficult time now (that, plus the fact that I'm over 40, hormonal as ****, and in the joy of peri-menopause...

I just read an article about the possibility that yo-yo dieting may be actually harmful to the efforts of weight loss.

http://www.prevention.com/article/0,...7176-1,00.html

And yeah, it makes sense. But what really burns me? My mother said the SAME THING to me about 10 years ago :nono: .....now tell me, why mamas always gotta be right???? :p ;) :D

Anyone else here a famous "yo-yo" dieter? I'm trying really hard to make THIS TIME the LAST TIME that I ever have to LOSE weight. Once I reach the goal THIS TIME, I want to be a MAINTAINER for life! Dagnabit! :dizzy:

Meg 06-27-2007 11:28 AM

Beach, when you reach goal this time, we're going to haul your (cute) butt off to the Maintainers Forum and duct tape you there for life. You're going to stick with us and work maintenance every freaking day and STAY THERE this time!! (or double your money back )

Seriously, come check us out now. You don't have to be at goal to start working on maintaining. :D

I know.. but I'm still 23 pounds from goal... so no way I can maintain just yet~!

But hey, I'm willing to try your duct tape trick.

Meg 06-27-2007 11:54 AM

You've lost 20 pounds already ... bet you're interested in maintaining that loss. Maintenance starts on Day One of your diet. :)

rockinrobin 06-27-2007 11:55 AM

Ya know I've thought about using duct tape in the past as a diet tool. But not for my butt - for my mouth - to keep it closed.

Note to self - buy me some duct tape, It can't harm to have the stuff in the house now, can it? ;)

MileHighMama 06-27-2007 11:56 AM

Hey, Beach. Yep, your mama was definitely right about the yo-yo dieting. I've been one for years too and am sure it screwed up my metabolism and is the cause of my hypothyroidism. This is the last time for me, though, and I am not goingt to put the weight back on again. I eat a low-cal diet and exercise for 60-90 minutes 6 days a week and am still losing a bit but it doesn't take much to make me gain, even with all the exercising. A few run ins with the peanut butter jar and I'm up 5 pounds just like that.

Hey Robin, you're another one I'm going to kidnap and duct tape to the Maintainers Forum, so watch out chickie!

Hey, maybe I need to start a 'sticky' for all the people I'm going to capture and duct tape. :lol3: I crack myself up sometimes.

BabyBrownEyes 06-27-2007 12:27 PM

Good points Meg...Maintaining does start at the moment you start your diet...or new lifestyle.

For instance...I'm maintaining myself losing weight. ;) I hope I never go back to eating the junk I used to and I hope that I will always be active like I am now. I love the way I feel and the energy I have. I want to bear children in a healthy body..not an overweight, overbearing body. :)

You can do it BP!!

gailr42 06-27-2007 01:28 PM

I like the idea that maintaining starts at the beginning!

I have a PhD in YoYo dieting. At least I didn't start until I was 40. Up until then I was skinny, thin, slim in that order. Yikes, that means I have been struggling with weight for almost 25 years now. Holy moley. I think it must be time for me to "get it".

I never really looked at it like that, but you're right! Even if I don't lose another pound, I do want to maintain the 20 that I've already lost - cause 158 is better than 178 any day of the week & twice on Sundays! :D

Any day now ...... any day. :)

You don't know what you're in for though. You might just throw me out on my rear. I'm not that easy to deal with on a daily basis. ;)

I have invaded the maintainers forum many times :) My weight loss isn't linear though, over the past few years, I've lost weight, stopped and maintained, lost weight, stopped and maintained, etc. It is also important to know the struggles that will occur once you do get to your ultimate goal.

srmb60 06-27-2007 02:06 PM

I've been to maintainers a couple of times ;) apparently I forgot the duct tape. I still peek in now and again.
Every loser should go read there. They're lovely folks, really!

alinnell 06-27-2007 04:07 PM

Ya'll know I hang out in the maintainers area all the time and I'm still not at goal. I figure they have something to offer to get me in the mindset of maintaining. And I have been pretty good--I maintained for 6 months, but just recently saw an increase, so I'm back on the diet bandwagon in hopes of making goal this time. I don't like yo-yoing either.

rockinrobin 06-27-2007 04:38 PM

Sad to admit this, but oh so true. I have never been a yo-yo dieter. For me it was always up and up and up and then up some more. This it the first time I actually have something TO maintain. Should be interesting. Yes, that's what I'll call it - ummm, interesting - when in fact I mean HARD. Real, REAL hard. Ooish. G-d help me. :)

Kery 06-28-2007 02:25 AM

I love lurking in the Maintainers forum, actually. :) At first I was afraid it would be weird or even inappropriate, since I'm not at goal yet, but I found out I can learn lots of things all the same, and the people there are very nice and don't mind me when I post, so... ;)

(And I must admit, if I can learn to maintain the weight I am at *now*, then that would already be a huge, huge victory in my life.)
