I think this is the study that the OP might have been referring to:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/...in701408.shtml Even though diet soda has very few calories, over time, diet soda drinkers gain more weight than non-soda drinkers and even regular soda drinkers! |

There ARE people out there who have a HORRIBLE diet but drink diet soda...of course they're going to gain weight...they have a bad diet to begin with. My brother got a HUGE gut on him from months of drinking a 2 liter of Mountain Dew every day. silly, silly, silly |
People make make studies sound bad even if they are good. ust like statistics. Worldwide, approximately one in every 100 adults aged 15 to 49 is HIV-infected How many females are here....How many have hiv or aids??
Guess what? Water can be bad for you too. ANYTHING can be bad for you. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-water-poisoning.htm |

Everyone says 'diet' soda makes you gain weight - I find it does the OPPOSITE for me. I decided that for fun, I was going to do a 'lent challenge' and I decided to give up DIET COKE witch turn into anything that had 'fake' sugar. Up to this point, I believe it was the worst thing I could of done. For 40 days I had no fake sugar. I thought FOR SURE I was going to lose weight, boy was I wrong. The scale didn't move, it didn't move at all. If anything I GAINED weight. AND to this day, I am still having a hard time losing weight (we as before I was having no troubles) Fluke maybe? But I will never give up diet coke again. I want something sweet I have some diet coke. During lent I had the WORST cravings for cookies, donuts, etc. I dont have ANY of that if I have diet coke. Anyway, diet coke or whatever has never caused my scale to go up. my .02 |

I agree with Courtnie. I've actually been cutting back on sodas for the last three months but during last TOM, I allowed myself diet soda in place of the junk I was craving. It satisfied my cravings and I lost for the first time during TOM ever. So now I'm only allowing myself sodas during TOM.

This is not exactly on topic but all this talk about diet sodas makes me remember that I saw an ad about 20 (!) years ago for a beverage carbonator. I haven't seen or heard of one since. I mean just a simple one for individual use, not an industrial scale carbonator. Does anyone know of such a gizmo and where to get one? I feel guilty buying plastic bottles of fizz water. The one I saw, if I remember correctly, would fizz anything. I think you could make carbonated milk if you wanted. Not that I would want to but maybeeeeeee....
-Off the diet sodas but still into the fizz.... jo |
I used to have one! You had to buy cartridges for it to make the fizz. Search on the Web for "seltzer bottles" or "soda siphons" and you should find some! :D

Hiya. Ive detox'd from caffeine several times in my 32 year old life, its usually a nasty 5 day period, but once Im off it, its great.Unfortunately, I always go back, because of my dear, beloved, diet coke addiction. The last time I detox'd, was due to a bad amoebic infection I got in the Philippines, so I HAD to drop the caffeine bc I was so sick. When I got home, all I keep in the fridge is caff free diet coke. Then, I found Starbucks iced coffee in cans. So, back on caffeine, but I still only buy caff free diet coke. The science behind diet pop causing you to "gain weight" is that the artificial sweeteners in the pop still continue to cause your body to react to the fake sugar like real sugar, releasing insulin, therefore, causing more cravings. Im insulin resistent and have PCOS, and borderline diabetic, so my doc has driven this into the ground, but, I have tried to switch to dt coke with splenda, but its not the same!!!! And then also there are the scientific studies done on aspartame. Oh well. I do make it a point to drink more caff free no cal drinks and water, than I do the regular caffeinated drinks. Moderation I think, is the key with everything, but I certainly understand the diet coke addiction!!!!!!

Oof, couldn't make it through all the comments but..
I'm on the same page. I LOVE diet sodas. I could drink them all day BUT there are two reasons why they work against you losing weight.
When it comes to colas and caffeinated bevereges, they are diurates. That means they flush water out of your system, and actually make you dehydrated (has happened to me way too often). This slows down your metabolism, because your body cant function properly without water. Secondly, when you drink diet sodas, your body recognizes (or thinks it recognizes) sugar coming into your system. Then it never comes and you are left with cravings. THIS is what makes you gain weight, not the soda itself. I made a rule that with every sodacan I would drink a glass of water, then two glasses of water and so forth until I would stop the soda. I am now left with fewer cravings and I'm not as hungry in general! 8D |
