I guess I should stop "beating" myself up

  • I only lost 1 lb and 1 " this week. However, because of my severe diverticulitis attack, I wasn't able to exercise. I'd lost about 3 lbs during the week but I attribute that to the fact that I was only eating 6-700 calories until I could get back on track (somewhat back on track).

I'm sitting here telling myself that I'd said all along that I wanted to lose 1-2 lb/wk. That is a safe weight loss and that it will be maintainable. I did that! I lost 1 lb.

It's just that seeing only 1" go away is a bit depressing.

Oh well, we'll see what next week brings. I'll be late in my weighing and measuring because we'll be out of town.
  • One pound doesn't seem like a lot all by itself. But hang in there and just keep doing the same things you've been doing for a few weeks. Those 1 pound losses will all add up. And just because you only lost 1 this week doesn't mean that you won't lose 2 or 3 next week. Weight loss is rarely linear - some weeks will be more successful than others. Be patient!
  • cbmare, remember that it's the long term trends that matter, not a particular number in any one week. A one pound loss is great, so you definitely should not be beating yourself up over this.

Also, you said you're only eating 600 - 700 calories on some days. That sounds really too low to me - you may be making your body think it's in starvation mode by restricting your calories that much, which can slow your weight loss. I'm no expert, but most recommendations I've seen are that you should never go below 1200 calories a day. Not to mention that it's hard to get the nutrients you need on that restricted a diet.

I wasn't intentionally eating that low. I had diverticulitis and eating made me very sick. I've started my way back to eating right. I can't eat anything that is rich in iron or calcium until I'm off some of these meds. One of the meds made me sick, so eating just ended up with upchucking and the other end .......

I know I was eating too few calories, I just couldn't help it for about 4 days.

Thanks for your concern. I was (before my body turned on me) trying to eat 1200 - 1600/day. I realized that unless I was eating junk, I couldn't eat the upper end, so I lowered it to 1200 - 1400/day.

I can't wait to get some spinach. I should be off the meds prohibiting that soon.
  • Yes, 600-700 (or anything below 1,200) a day is WAY too low ~ your body is burning more lean-muscle tissue too when you do that (which can really detrimental for your metabolism).

If one day you overdid it, just get back on track with a sustainable program - don't try to overcompensate, it's risky and can lead to a very counterproductive binge/starve cycle. And weight loss (in pounds or inches) itself isn't particularly a linear process, no matter how much we try to plan it as such. Some weeks we'll lose more than expected, other weeks we'll plateau. Just keep at it, and your 1 lb. lost this week is great!
  • don't worry about losing just one pound... that's one WHOLE pound!!! u should be thrilled u didn't gain a pound...yeah i was pretty upset this past week b/c like u i only lost one pound. then i just decided that i needed to find a nice balance between being a healthy eater and having fun. i tried to keep a positive attitude and to my suprise the next time i weighed myself i lost 6 lbs!...so please don't worry too much. ur hard efforts are gonna pay off.
    for your lovely pound lost!!!!
  • Gosh, when you're sick the last thing on your mind should be losing weight! You did great to drop a pound, but the more important thing is getting over the diverticulitis attack. I hope you're feeling better!

    Jay
  • I don't think some of you are reading it all. I only ate that low because I was ill.

JayEll, thanks. All through this, I've been concerned about getting in enough calories but at the same time was too sick to exercise.

I decided to reward myself yesterday. A reward for several reasons. That 1 lb and 1" as well as feeling better and starting to exercise again. I went and had 4" chopped off my hair, color and got those pesky "stray eye brows" that keep popping out my chin removed.

Now that I'm no longer taking the meds, I'm starting to eat my cereal again and will be able to eat some greens, finally!
  • WOO HOO!!!!!!! ONE POUND!!!!!!!!! Don't you realize how FABULOUS that is?!?!??!!

One pound! That's how weight loss works! ONE POUND AT A TIME! - don't forget that you may be in a hurry, but your body will still lose at it's own rate... and always remember to celebrate the little things in life! - SO.....

    WOO HOO!!! ONE POUND!!!!!!!!!!!
