Default Are they serious?

http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm506625.htm

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved a new obesity treatment device that uses a surgically-placed tube to drain a portion of the stomach contents after every meal."

This just really bothers me. The method in which it works just resembles disordered eating to me. Thoughts?

I agree. Seems rather disordered. In extreme "lose weight or die" situations I can almost see this as an option, but if you just continue to eat what made you fat to begin with, it certainly won't help in the long run.

I'm afraid that it might spread the idea, "I drained this much, so I can eat more since I didn't have all of it to begin with" type mentality or someone might think they can eat the same foods all they want because of less calories, so they won't turn to more nutrient dense foods. I feel with bypass or sleeve you at least have to think about your food choices since the wrong ones make you feel sick and that helps with long run decisions versus just draining out the calories that will inedibility be in the same food after you lose weight and the device is removed.

I am not seeing how this is any better than taking half your food and directly throwing it in the garbage. They are not addressing the issue of behavior modification. It is like vomiting after you have eaten so you can eat more.

In my opinion is better to approach a total different lifestyle. Starting small to introduce light workout, longer walks, reduce gradually the amount of calories intake. It will serve better in the long run!
