Interesting Perspective Shift

from the article:
Quote:

Everything you know about dieting is wrong, say US scientists who have devised a new formula for calculating calories and weight loss that they hope will revolutionize the way people tackle obesity.
...
Current standards in the United States, where two thirds of people are overweight or obese, advise people that cutting calories by a certain amount will result in a slow and steady weight loss over time.

But that advice fails to account for how the body changes as it slims down, burning less energy and acquiring a slower metabolism, researchers told the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver.

Interesting article that corresponds with my experience. I tried the calculator; verified what I'm doing. Although it factors in age and gender, what it doesn't take into account is how certain medical conditions impact the rate of weight loss. What I thought would take a year is taking three, probably because of endocrine issues. I think it would be helpful for people starting out to get a better idea of what's ahead. Thanks for posting!

That is actually very interesting. I plugged it in, and it ended up a little bit lower then I try to eat (I hover around 1550) it's telling me 1501 to drop from 174.6 to 155 (20 lbs) in 60 days. That's approx 8.5 weeks. Using the standard 2lbs MAX a week, that would show up as -17.14 lbs in the 60 days.

Makes sense.

Ah! I work for AAAS! It's so exciting when normal people (ie, not super brilliant scientists) like me actually get something out of the stuff we publish/post/talk about/publicize! I don't understand 85% of it myself but I'll definitely have to take a gander at this article. Thanks for posting!
