I've pretty much give up on expecting the media to report science news anywhere near accurately. I particularly noticed this when a pilot trial which found that dark chocolate is not useful as a treatment for ME/CFIDS (the placebo was white chocolate dyed dark, and 4 out of the 10 participants dropped out anyway) was reported by the media as "dark chocolate will cure ME/CFIDS".
Two earthshatteringly surprising headlines we've had in the UK over the last week: binge drinking is harmful to teenage girls, and teenagers aren't getting enough fruit and veg.
