Flavored Milk voted OUT of the Los Angeles Unified School District

Have any of you followed Jamie Oliver's campaign to remove flavored milk from our schools? The sugar in the flavored milk that is served to our children at school amounts to about 2 GALLONS of SUGAR or over 23,000 calories per school year! It really adds up

Due to his campaign, the Los Angeles Unified School District has voted to stop serving flavored milk to their 680,000 students effective July 1 :cheer:

Yay! He is amazing. I'm always shocked at how much resistance he gets from some parents and teachers (at least in the first season).

I know the trouble isn't only about what's in the schools, but I feel like they should be setting a healthy example for children in what to eat and drink.

A step in the right direction is a good thing. I don't think kids need strawberry & chocolate flavored milks every day. However, if the parents do think their kids need them, then they can have them at home.

This is great! I couldn't believe the fierce opposition Jamie was met with by that idiot school board. I can only imagine it has something to do with money...

Lovely - I completely agree, if kids have to have flavored milk they can have it at home or outside the school. I definitely believe that schools do need to take some responsibility to teach kids nutrition.

Now, if they could only get the rest of the junk out of the schools!

Nothing makes me cringe more than to hear a parent say of their overweight child "S/he won't eat anything other than McDonalds". Kids are not born with Happy Meals in their hands. This sort of problem is learned behavior. Even if parents do their best to make sure their kids eat lean proteins and lots of vegetables and fruits, their efforts may be washed away by the food their kids get served at school. Greasy, highly processed McChicken chunks. French fries. Pizza. The few vegetables they serve are rarely cooked in a way that makes them appetizing. Everything is low quality, based on the cheapest ingredients they can get.

When I read our local school lunch menu, I nearly gagged. I knew what type of extremely low quality ingredients went into it. They put that in their mouths? I feel sorry for the children because they don't understand. I realize, of course, that there are plenty of children who would not have a lunch at all if it were not for the lunches provided by the schools. But that's not what this is about. It used to be about responsibility to our children. Now it's all about profit and loss.
