Omega-3 and flaxseed

Does flaxseed need to be ground first in order for our bodies to absorb the omega-3? I also read that it is best to toast it first to release nutrients inside. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Berkeley has an article on flax seed here and they say:

Quote:

Grind the seeds or else chew them very well—whole seeds simply pass through the body. Grinding the seeds just before using them best preserves flavor and nutrition, but pre-ground seeds are more convenient. Keep them refrigerated.
They don't say anything about toasting, but hopefully someone else will know. :)

People commonly use flax seed oil, which can come in capsule form (which is available in non-gelatin caps as well), in straight oil that must be refrigerated, or in some commercial products (flax waffles, flax added to Smart Balance buttery spread, flax oatmeal, etc.)

Bob's Red Mill sells ground golden flaxseeds in an opaque bag-- it comes refrigerated. It's great in a smoothie with soymilk, blueberries, and banana! :carrot:
