Food pyramid and vitamins?

Is there a special food pyramid (preferably for pescetarians or vegans, but vegetarians work too!). I've seen different ones. I'm also diabetic type 1, if it matters.

Also, what vitamins do you take? I've read on some vegan sites that vegans (perhaps vegetarians and pescetarians as well?) are lacking in some essential nutrients, such as B12. Do any of you know the recommended amounts of these nutrients?

This might be something like you are looking for:

Although not vegan or even vegetarian, Dr Fuhrman has a food pyramid that is plant-focused although not plant-based

In terms of overall nutrition, here are a couple good links

Most pure herbivores get little to no B12 in their diet. For humans that choose a vegan diet, the same is true. As a result, supplementation is highly, highly recommended. I take a decent multi vitamin but I don't specifically worry about B12. I've had my B12 levels checked through blood tests and I'm normal/above normal.

Thank you for the links!

I've heard that B12 tests aren't accurate, when it comes to veggies, for some reason? :/

Not sure why anyone would think that. Blood tests can detect the amount of B12 in your body, doesn't matter what you eat. Another important blood test is vitamin D as many people (not just vegetarians) are low in vitamin D.

hey nelie,

i have been taking a multivitamin that shows 100% for vitamin D and vitamin b-12.

i supplement b-12. i used to buy other separate supplements in addition to the multi for D, DHA, and other things. Am i wasting my money if i am already buying the multivitamin that reflects 100%? i know you aren't a doctor ;) but you seem well read on the topic. thanks for any advice you can give!
