Roasted chickpeas are awesome!

As a new vegetarian, I'm looking for ways to get my protein and more interesting ways to eat the dreaded beans, so I was quite excited to find out how tasty roasted chickpeas can be. I tossed them in some olive oil and a few spices and they were quite yummy. I worry about the calories and fat in the olive oil (and yes, I know olive oil is a healthier oil, but weight loss does come down in the final analysis to calories in/calories out).

But anyway -- they were fantastic! For those of you who've already discovered this yummy snack, what kind of spices do you put on yours? How much olive oil do you use (or do you skip it)?

Did you see the recipe I posted for tamari/rosemary roasted chickpeas? It is pretty awesome. You can go it very light with olive oil, I usually do.

I've had Nelie's chickpeas before. YUMMY!!! The whole family loves them.

I love, love, love roasted chickpeas. I don't use spices or olive oil- I think they taste great plain.

monkeylou 02-15-2010 12:11 PM

Love roasted chickpeas! They can get me trouble though cuz I'll eat the whole batch in no time! I usually do very little EVOO and a little salt or pepper, I tried chili powder once and they were pretty good. There's a lot of possibilities...
Mmm I think I'm gona have to go to the store and pick some up today :)

I have to try roasted chickpeas!

I made some yesterday and used a little olive oil, garlic salt, garlic powder, pepper and nutritional yeast. They were great!

Roasted chickpeas are now expected by my household to be made every Tuesday night for LOST. :corn:

LisaMarie71 03-01-2010 08:10 PM

Jennifer, that's a wonderful idea! I love LOST, and roasted chickpeas would make it even better. :)

Here is the recipe for Tamari Roasted Chickpeas that Nelie found :)

Mmm, that looks awesome...

Jennifer 3FC 03-08-2010 04:34 PM

Arrrgh! Lemon juice! I've been making them without lemon juice. I knew they weren't as good as the ones Nelie made, but I thought it was her own magic touch. :p

nelie 03-08-2010 04:46 PM

hah yes, my magic touch!!

tomandkara 03-09-2010 09:08 AM

I use probably about 3 Tablespoons of oil for two cans of chick peas plus salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and cumin. We all love these! I've tried changing up the spices, but we really like this combination best.

Jennifer 3FC 04-06-2010 08:06 PM

Nelie, this recipe calls for a half teaspoon of rosemary - didn't we use a lot more?

nelie 04-06-2010 10:40 PM

hah yeah, I must've been overenthusiastic :)

Jennifer 3FC 04-07-2010 01:35 AM

OH no, I liked it much better. Tonight we made a double batch, and I used a 6 inch sprig of rosemary, and snipped the leaves. A little more would have been ok!

Priscatip 04-07-2010 10:45 AM

I love love love roasted chickpeas. I use about a teaspoon of olive oil for one can, and I use spicy steak seasoning (McCormick's) to liven them up. Delicious.

I wanted to try to make roasted chickpeas.. and I saw that they are called garbanzo (sp?!?!) beans is what they are also called?

So I bought them in a BAG and I see that some of you guys mentioned canned ones. Can I still use the ones in the bag, or are they different??

I really wanted to try them!

nelie 04-08-2010 11:40 AM

You can use the ones in the bag but you have to cook them first. Chickpeas and garbanzo beans are the same thing.

Cook, then roast.

Jennifer 3FC 04-08-2010 11:50 AM

You can use the ones in the bag. (and garbanzo is correct) Lots of people prefer to cook their own. (It's also cheaper). Just be sure and boil/prepare on the bag before you roast them. If you roast them dry, you'll have burnt little pebbles. :p

I made a batch Tuesday night (LOST, ya know!) and I doubled the rosemary and might even raise it a bit more next time. So I do think upping the amount in the above recipe is fine if you are a rosemary lover.

Another tip - if you don't have agave, it's ok to use something else like honey, molasses, etc but make sure it's thin enough, otherwise it will just stick to the spoon and collect rosemary and bean skins. I ran out of agave and tried using stroop (a Dutch syrup that is very thick) and it was a mess to mix. I think if I run out again, I'll just use teriyaki instead of tamari and skip the sweetener.

Jennifer 3FC 04-08-2010 11:51 AM

D'oh! I'm slow.

mammasita 04-08-2010 11:53 AM

chili and garlic powder. SPICY yum.

There is also a recipe for a "chick pea" pizza. Its fantastic. My son eats it up! It's a "Fat Smash" recipe http://www.fatsmashforum.com/phase-i...a-phase-1.html

Thanks for the reminder! I have done roasted chickpeas before and loved them. I am taking a long car trip this weekend so these will be perfect to bring in the car!

shortandfluffy 04-09-2010 01:24 PM

Thank you Nelie and Jennifer!
