Starting Vegan/Gluten Free to Lose Weight

  • Hi, I'm new on here and was wondering if anybody knew any good, low calorie vegan/gluten free recipes. I've been a strict vegetarian for seven years now and want to make the change over to veganism but I've known many people who've felt much healthier going gluten free as well. Thoughts? Suggestions?
  • I am a self-diagnosed celiac and have been trying (sometimes hard, sometimes not so hard) to be gluten free for just under a year now.
I find that for gluten free celiac.org has a lot of information and recipes.

I don't understand anyone who would choose to eliminate gluten, it sucks, it is in so many things. But that's just me wanting what I cannot have. sob
  • blog.fatfreevegan.com has a lot of great, low fat vegan recipes. Not all are gluten free but some are.

I also would suggest trying to see if there are any vegan cookbooks at your library. Quite a few vegan cookbook authors are aware of the gluten free community and try to list gluten free recipes in their cookbook (not always true but I know Isa Chandra Moskowitz/Terry Romero try to)
  • Hello,

I am a gluten free vegan. I have been gluten free for 4 years, vegetarian for 14 years and vegan for 2 months. I agree with Carly Smoker, I would not remove gluten unless you know that is the cause of your health problems. It does suck. Once you remove the gluten from your diet, it could be harder for doctors to detect if gluten is a real problem for you becuase it is not in your system.

With that being said, there are many low calorie vegan and naturally gluten free foods. I will say, taking gluten out of you diet will take alot of familiar foods away. You need to be comfortable with cooking. It takes alot of preperation and planning. There may not always be options out in the world to eat so my suggestion is to always have snacks with you to prevent temptation.

It all depends on what you like to eat. I eat alot of beans, seeds, potatoes, brown rice, brown rice pasta and lots of veggies. There is a vegan gluten free cookbook available on amazon.com. The other resources mentioned by others are great also. I would do some research first before trying a gluten free lifestyle. Gluten hides in many things. Good luck.
  • I am happy I stumbled upon this thread !
I just began a gluten free vegan eating plan and while it is ok, it is not rocking my world. I do think I will need to just be wheat free and have small amounts of organic dairy.
The reason I even contemplated gluten free veganism is that I suffer from a lot of bloating after eating starch and I crave carbs like there is no tomorrow.
I am not much of a cook, and am finding the elimination of all animal products plus gluten a bit of a chore. I also have insulin resistance and after a totally vegan and gluten free day ( yesterday ) my blood sugar was sky high this morning.
    I need to rethink this.
