Menstral Cycles and Vegetarianism
Does anyone else have irregular cycles since starting veg? I have been a complete vegetarian for 2 months now, and while the first 2 cycles were normal, and painless ( first time ever) this last one, is late.. and Im not pregnant. lol. I read somewhere online that veg women are 4 times more likely to have irregular cycles. Anyone here find that to be true?

hi there
i'm not a vegetarian, but i did start eating healthy about 3 weeks ago, and you know i did had my period almost a week later, it didn't happend before, except when i got pregnant, other than that... nope....until now. so i guess that make sense. |
I've been a veggie for 26 years. It hasn't affected my cycle once during that time. I could always set a clock by my cycle.

My menstral cycle was all over the place until I went back to being veg. Now it's normal and so much less PMS.

I'm veggie and mines always a few days early or a few days late. Mainly late. Not sure what that means!

since I went Vegetarian June of 2007 my periods have been very off. I always had a 4 day period 24 days between. Since going veg I missed 2periods in a row then had a period for over 40 days then missed my period for another 3 cycles and then had a 10 day period.
I had many tests bloodwork, ultrasounds etc. to explain why this has happened I was told I had nothing wrong with me the only other reason I can speculate aside from a diet change is my high weight, my hypothyroidism, however both of those issues I have had quite some time without irregularity. As on Jan 2nd I have gone vegan, I am not sure how this will affect my cycles but I feel great. I hope this helps you a bit, but if you are having some changes please let your doctor know just in case its something else such as cysts on your ovaries or anything like that. |
Well I finally started yesterday, 4 days late. I was reading and I guess a womans cycle can be 24-35 days,.. however mine has always been like clockwork.. 28days. Then I also read that vegetarian women are 4 times more likely to have irregular cycles than non-vegetarian women. What I DO know though.. is that since I have been a vegetarian I dont know when my period is coming just simply because I dont have PMS... which is scary for a woman of childbearing age lol.. hmm... late period.. NO SIGN of a period lol. Luckily I am single or I would have been spazing :) Thanks to all who responded... at least I am not the only one who has this issue!!

My cycles have always been 21 to 26 days, same as my mother. Been vegetarian since a year after my first period so I couldn't tell the difference. Though I believe the body is a sensitive thing, and reacts to food and mood. In time your body will get used to your new lifestyle and it will balance out. As long as you're not underweight I think you will be ok, but better check with doc if you are worried. I think personally, not being a medic, that calorie deficiency and stress affects the cycle more than being vege. Good to eat spinach, kidney beans and dark green veg for iron though.

Are you eating lots of soy? That tends to throw off the cycle.
