Protein Shake.

I realized I wasn't getting enough protein in my diet, so I bought these protein shakes.
Downside... they have 230 calories. I want to lose weight. 230 is kinda a lot of extra, and I haven't been losing weight without those extra calories.
Should I drink it anyways, health first? And maybe since it's what my body is missing it won't make me gain?

What are you eating on a daily basis? What makes you feel you haven't been getting enough protein? What brand of shake is it? What is your plan of eating (calorie counting, weight watchers etc.) ?

That sounds like a lot of calories for a protein shake. I drink protein shakes and they are about 100 calories per serving. I'd also be curious to see what you are eating. You can get quite a bit of vegetarian protein with 230 calories not in a shake form.

Yeah... 45 grams of protein for 230 calories? No.

I don't know what I eat... it changes. I'm on summer break so it's not the same thing everyday like it was at school.

It's kinda hard for me lately because my parents are having problems and I seem to be going out with my dad A LOT lately, and resturants don't usually have very many vegetarian entree's, let alone protein rich ones. I think I calculated it one day and was getting about 30, which is NOT enough for one day because I'm quite active and I'm trying to keep my muscle through the summer because during school I row.

Are you a vegan? If not, egg whites, egg beaters, cheese, yogurt, milk are great sources of protein. If you are a vegan what about adding in nuts, beans, peanut butter, and more veggie soy products.

Nikki_20216 06-09-2007 11:48 AM

Yes, I realize I could add in those things, but they also add fat and calories.
I think I'd be better off with the shake.
I'm going to have to add calories no matter what to get my protein in anyways.

One thing to keep in mind is your body can only use so much protein at once. If you are getting in 45 grams of protein in one sitting, then you might want to break that up into 2-3 times per day.

Nelie,

What brand protein shake do you drink? How many calories per day do you eat along with the protein shake? I have been looking for a lower calorie protein shake.

Also...awesome job with your weight loss! I have seen your postings before, and your success is VERY inspiring! :bravo:

I have GNC banana flavored Soy Protein Powder

The shakes have 25g of protein per serving and 150cal. I mix this with soy milk and it ends up being around 250-300cal per serving. I drink a shake at breakfast and at lunch then I eat a normal veg. dinner. I do this throughout the workweek and on my days off I allow myself whatever I want to eat. I have noticed lately that I do not crave as much food.

I find when I am on plan and drinking the shakes and taking vitamins I have a lot of energy and I dont feel like I am hungry all the time.
