Totally Fabulous UK Divas!

I knew that would get your attention... ;)

So...I was going through my iPod the other day and looking to download some new songs from iTunes and had a small revelation. Almost all of the women I have on my iPod are British! Dido...Joss Stone...KT Tunstall...etc. So, I thought of asking you guys on who you would recommend, seeing as how I seem to have a natural liking to the UK female pop stars.

Any recommendations?

treezuk 09-25-2006 08:01 AM

Jamelia , lu-lu , kate bush (if your into that sort of thing), shandi thom that is all i can think of apart from bands like spice girls , or all saints.

 I like Pink and Gwen Stephani

Ooooh Nerina Pallot - up and coming dudette, she is VERY good! Have you got Jamie Cullum over there? He's cool too!

LynneA 09-25-2006 10:53 AM

KT Tunstall is fab but you already mentioned her.

Kate Bush is terrific, The Kick Inside (her breakthrough) is my fave cd of hers although The Hounds of Love is just as good.

If you want a bit of rawk, try some Garbage. They're fronted by the lovely Shirley Manson.

Judging from what you've listed, you might like Corrine Bailey Rae or Lily Allen although both those girls put me to sleep.

Hope that helps!

2frustrated 09-25-2006 10:55 AM

OMG Lily Allen :barf: I cannot stand that girl! She can't even SING!

LynneA 09-25-2006 11:03 AM

Me too frus. I can't bear Corrine Bailey Rae either, even if she is from Leeds.

omg I forgot to mention Roisin Murphy of Moloko. She has the most amazing voice although her solo stuff has been a bit odd. If you download one song of hers, make it "Ramalama Bang Bang". I kid you not that's the title. It's great althought it might take you a couple of listens to like it.

treezuk 09-25-2006 11:13 AM

I like lily allen but its proberly my age im 24 hehe it just makes a change to hear some alternative music. i only like that one song by corienne bailey rae that girl put your record on , apart from that there poo.

I like Lily Allen (I have no age excuse) at least she's fun unlike Sandi Thom who I really quite hate. :D

sarahgrace 09-25-2006 01:11 PM

Miranda Sykes is pretty good, although I suspect no-one on here will have heard of her. Her latest album is called "Bliss" is to be welcomed:D

techwife 09-25-2006 02:01 PM

Wow...quite a list so far! I have to put away groceries, get the kids from school and then I'll fire up my 'puter with the iTunes on it and see what I can find. I'll let you all know who end up on my mp3.

I have only heard Kate Bush on a Peter Gabriel album and LOVED it. Its the same Kate Bush, right? That was, I think, in the 80's!

Keep the ideas coming, though...I have a big piece of paper for my list!! And lots of space left!!

Thanks!!

Kris

LynneA 09-25-2006 02:42 PM

Yup, that's the same Kate Bush, Techwife!

kykaree 09-26-2006 01:00 AM

I'm going to treat myself to Jamelia's new album I think. I totally don't get Lilly Allen......must have missed something there. Although I did hear her version of the Kaiser Chief's Oh My God, and thought that was pretty good, in a spoof kind of way, I don't think she can sing either!

2frustrated 09-26-2006 04:36 AM

Treeze - I'm 23, perhaps it's not your age that makes you like that Lily gal! ;)

How about trying some Texas - I like Charlene Spiteri, and I think she's gone solo now, but I do like Texas

treezuk 09-26-2006 06:25 AM

ohhhhh i just had a brain wave , you would love the sugababes & girls aloud there a bit different and quirky and there all british too.

:carrot: Teresa :carrot:

peacock 2 09-26-2006 06:52 AM

Must confess I like the Sugarbabes and Goldfrapp! (Dunno where Goldfrapp are from mind you. I cannot stand Dido - her phrasing is appalling. Lilly Allen is too cocky gong on about how she is better than Maddonna- I may not like Madge much but she has been around for more than Keith Allen's daughter!!!

I too luv Garbage! Also anyone remember Portishead - from Bristol?

I also adore Lulu, Sandy Shaw, Petula Clark, Dustry Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Nina Simone et al!

But then I also like Diamanda Galas - who is def not easy listening!!!

techwife 09-26-2006 07:39 AM

AHH! How could anyone not like Dido? Well, my husband doesn't, but he's a 45-year-old former skaterboarder from California and likes music that sounds like Satan barfing. I'm more the ABBA, Olivia Newton John, Barry Manilow type...which should explain Dido. ;)

veggie 09-26-2006 08:07 AM

Most of the female singers I like are American. :p

kalijack 09-26-2006 08:20 AM

Im a bit of a goth chick so it has to be Sarah Jezebel Deva. Not only has she got a fantastic voice, but she is also quite a large lady :D And she wears the most fabulous clothes too.
I was lucky to see her at a Cradle of Filth gig last year.
I also like Lacuna Coil and Theatre Des Vampires, although they are Italian not British, they both have women singers.

LynneA 09-26-2006 08:57 AM

Goldfrapp are fabulous and they are english, yup. I forgot about the sugababes and girls aloud too! Girls Aloud were my guilty pleasure when they first came out tee hee!

treezuk 09-26-2006 10:01 AM

hehe i have to say im another one who hates Dido (Dildo as i renamed her) lol , i find her music droney and boring and she sounds like she yawning. Love girls aloud all there tunes are mad and different and sugababes allways come out with some thing a bit wacky.

have you thought about british boys/bands: Lemar, George micheal , Will young ,Robbie Williams, Simply Red , Take That (and party lol), East 17 , 5ive , 911,Madness, Culture Club, god i could keep going, there is defintly some fit and talented boys out there.

Here's who made my short list:

Sandi Thom...Some GREAT walking songs on there! I think I'll try and see if I can get her CD at Walmart...my daughter will LOVE here.

Delerium

Kate Bush is different and kinda cool. :D

Corrine Bailey Rae...when I bought her up, my daughter shouts, "Oh...I love her!" And I liked her, too. She must be on Radio Disney because that's all my daughter listens to.

When I pulled up Girls Aloud, all it had was one Karaoke song. And all the Lilly Allen songs had explicit next to them. I'm just not that artsy...but when the kids are at school tomorrow, maybe I'll try again... Sugababes only had one song listed, Hole in the Head...which I might download (another good walking song!). Goldfrapp was just a tad too techno for me. LuLu came up with nothing. Miranda Sykes came up iwth nothing. Moloko was a bit...weird. I'd have to get used to it.

So, that's what I"ve come up with so far. Any other ideas, please post them!! :D

Treez: My husband calls her Dildo, too. I was just listening to Elton John today...George Michael...I only like a song he did a long time ago called Kissing a Fool...very pretty. I like Robbie Williams and haven't heard Simply REd in a looong time. Will revist them. Do they have new songs?

Okay...off to whip up dinner! Thanks for the ideas! Any new ones, let me know!!

Kris

Cool Kalijack thanks for the info on Sarah Jezebel Deva - I will have to do a nosy and a listen!

Techwife - I like the description - Satan barfing - music to my ears!!

Funnily enough - although I love all sorts my real faves are Funk, Soul, Reggae, Punk, Jazz, Blues, some Metal - in fact anything but country. When I bought a load of discs at the record fair recently I bought a load of old reggae - which brought back some great memories for me - of when I was a disco dolly and they played a load of reggae and I danced along. Ah when I was young....:(

peacock 2 09-27-2006 04:08 AM

HOw about Micah paris or Beverly Knight (I think that is her name?).

I also like Sam Browne - Daughter of Joe Browne - she is often on Joolz Holland's show and records.

Also Carmel (a scottish lass I think) she sings kind of jazzy stuff. I love her voice.

I used to like Joan Armatrading too.

Does anyone remember Mari Wilson - she was a sort of white soul singer - what's her name - Actress Michelle Collins was one of her backing singers - The Wilsations!

treezuk 09-27-2006 09:14 AM

I think simply red have just brought out a new album not sure if the songs are any good or not but i used to love Stars , babies , fairground , somthin got me started hehe most of them actully.

LynneA 09-27-2006 09:41 AM

Have you listened to any M People? They are a dance group but not techno, more r&b flavoured. Heather Small the lead singer has a great voice too.

treezuk 09-27-2006 09:47 AM

oh yeah M people were great in there hey day and i think that heather small the lead singer has just realised a solo album a little while ago if its anything like there other stuff it might be quiet good.
