Question for the runners....

I've recently started walking a lot (19 miles this week with tomorrows 7 mile walk included) and am having trainer 'issues'. I keep getting pins and needles in my feet and it can get so I can barely feel them after about 3 miles.

Any ideas? I've just bought a new pair of trainers, which were properly fitted, as I thought it was the old ones, and don't really want to spend any more money.

I don't really know whether its your trainers or your feet. I walk at least 20 miles a week and thats not in trainers because I have uni or work its either flatties or heels and I've never had pins and needles in my feet as a result. Could it be something you're doing. Maybe you've pulled a muscle or done something to a nerve somewhere?

Do you wear those trainers anywhere else like the gym? Do you get the same problem then or is it just when walking.

I'd certainly try new trainers but if that doesn't work try something from the scholl range like pressure pad things ( I think they are the trainer equivalent of party feet) if that doesn't work it might be worth popping to the doctors or chiropodist because you really shouldn't be having this problem. Are your feet generally ok?

Something like these might do the trick

or padding

I don't know what your feet are like but do you have any problems with the arches because that could have something to do with it.

Also are the pins and needles just in your feet or in your legs too?

Scholl really should pay me lol

Hey There,

I was just reading this week about someone else who has the same prob in the Health and Fitness mag, I am the same after around ten mins I get pins and needles. The mag said that it was most likely the trainers and that the person should get running trainers fitted by a specialist. Hope that helps. :dizzy:

Thanks. I actually bought a pair of scholl insoles yesterday (£9.99!) and tried them on a 7 mile walk this morning. Soooo much better!

7 mile walk!! :faint: where do you go to? When I was home I was talking to an old man in the pub and he said his dad used to walk from preston to blackpool every day!!!!!!!!! :yikes: :tired: I asked him how long it took him  he did'nt know then I said it must have been dark by the time he got there :dunno:

that's 16.7 miles!!!!! Amazing!!!! Wouldn't catch me doing that!!!

Two things i never skimp on are shoes and bras! When I was having the same problem, I went to a store called the Running Room where an expert had me try on at least 50 pairs of running shoes till finally we found the ones I wear now! It's changed the way I exercise!

I've never had a pins and needles problem when running (I'm still smiling from being told at the running shop that the trainers I had were pretty much right for my feet despite me choosing them unaided :D ), but on the subject of bras, I saw this research the other day (if the link is allowed).

Of course, that rather depends on having any boobs to sag, when I've got my sports bra on I'm almost completely flat chested because it straps them down (and without my sports bra, most of what you see comes from the padding in the bra rather than what's filling them). That's the reason I'm fatter than my sister too - despite being roughly the same weight, all hers is in her boobs whereas mine is most definitely elsewhere ;)

susie_sunshine 01-15-2006 03:31 PM

Well, unfortunately, i've got the boods, even after having them surgically reduced!

Clareh 01-15-2006 04:27 PM

YP- I saw that link too and that's the whole reason I don't run!

The trainers I've got now were professionally fitted on Tuesday (as I figured the pins and needles were down to the old trainers) That's why I was a bit concerned. I googled my symptons when bored (always better than seeking real medical advice- NOT!) and it seems like you can get a bit of nerve tension from shoving your feet into high heels for years (Hm.. exactly what I've done)

Oh well, padded insoles for me. At least the pins and needles don't get so bad I can't feel my feet (I had a horrible picture of me collapsing at the side of the road with 'dead' feet!) and if I stop for a bit, they go away. Irritating though.

Cat- it was a circle of Warwick. I'll be doing 7 miles at night after work in a coupe of weeks as well as a 10- 16 mile walk at weekends. CAN'T WAIT::rolleyes:

scholl are quite expensive but I find their footcare stuff so much better than other brands. The only other ones I like are the lloyds pharmacy ones they are quite good.

I walk a lot as well (5 to 7 miles a day for the last 4 years) and I find it helps if I don't wear the same pair of trainers every day. I've currently got three pairs which I wear in turn - its strange because they are all the same make and size but they feel completely different when I'm wearing them.

I also find it makes a difference what kind of socks I'm wearing with them.

I have resurrected this link as a cautious note about the big old chain sportswear shops that are in out of town shopping centres (probably not all of them, but certainly the one in Stratford Upon Avon!)

I've found out why I have pins and needles after going to my local running shop- because my 'professionally fitted' trainers are actually FAR too narrow for me and the original shop didn't even sell me a wide fitting, (so it's a bit like walking with a tight bandage around your feet)

I tried on over 12 pairs in the running shop and they ended up not even selling me a pair as the best fit were end of line and 0.5 of a size smaller would've fitted better. They gave me the part number, told me to buy them off the internet and just come back next time I needed some. And I found out all kinds of things about my over- pronating feet!

So here's to local independant sports shops (and my new trainers coming this week!) I'm sure there are some good chain sports shops but my experience doesn't really support this.
