"Things" on toast! Ideas please!
Ideas please for tasty but low fat low calorie things to have on my Weightwatchers toast (70 cals per slice = 140c).
So far I have thought of: Pilchards in tomato sauce Marmite and a sliced hard boiled egg or fried egg Scraping of low fat sandwich spread and a slice of ham Half a can of baked beans Low sugar, no artificial sweeteners please. Up to 160 calories to make me a meal totalling 300 calories. Thanks 362 x |
Oooh!
Sautee (boil the **** out of) baby tomatoes (chopped) with garlic and basil (+salt and pepper?). Instead of margarine, use avocado as a spread on the toast and then add the tomato and garlic topping! Might sound weird, but it's great and healthy. You could also try a soft cheese/hummus with cucumber slices. I also have scrambled tofu and veg on toast instead of scrambled eggs. |
I love tosts very much! It depends on my mood but i like to use (in different combinations): avocado, shrimps, boiled chicken breasts, doiled veal, feta, tomatoes, cucumbers, garlis, greens, salad leeves (different kinds). Also i do sweet tosts: bananas, strawberris, honey, cottage cheese
|
I love a tomato sandwich, with hummas spread. Scrambled egg sandwich is good as well. It seems that cucumber is a traditional sandwich. I thought most bread was about 70 calories per slice.

These are all things I love, but now I rarely eat bread, so no more sandwiches. I keep a loaf of Sara Lee 45 cal bread in the freezer for an occasional sandwich treat. |
Pure almond (or any nut) butter, ricotta cheese, hummus and pesto (pref. home made) are my faves.
I also have mashed avocado with a bit of sea salt which is super satisfying, especially with an egg on the side. |
cottage cheese with a sprinkle of salt nothing else

KitKat from what I understand, the UK Heinz beans are just beans in tomato sauce. I could probably do that easily, but I would be the only one eating them because everyone else like the traditional US baked beans with all the sugar and molasses. They ARE good, but I am diabetic and cannot have all that sugar. I think someday I will spend the extra money and buy a can of the Heinz UK beans. They are over $2 US for a small can, while our other canned baked beans are around $1 US.
|
my favorite is a small pouch of tuna fish with lots of cucumber and onions for bulk. You feel so full after! it tastes fresh and delicious.
|
I could send you a baked bean care package from the UK if you want? ;)
I don't know how great Heinz UK are.. it still definitely contains salt and sugar although you can buy a 'low salt low sugar' version. |
LOL I can just see my husband if I start getting beans in the mail. LOL
|
I've put some refried beans on toast and then melted a little shredded cheese on the top when I've been in the mood for mexican - a little fresh salsa on the top makes it even better and adds hardly anything for the counts.

Ooooh great thread! At the end of a long, busy, kid filled day I sometimes don't want to cook (again!) so I turn to toast. This thread has given me a few more ideas. Thanks!

Cosco Pesto and Multi Grain bread toasted. Add filler as desired???
Cosco has a perfect Pesto that is just delish on their multi grain bread with a tad of sliced cheese and green sprouts and sliced avacado. I had this 1 time at the place on Piedmont Ave Cafe'. They called it an Avacado and pesto with cheese and sprout sandwich I think? Warning the pesto is Not Fat free, but it is Delicious.......

Breakfast treat: toast bread first, top with thinly sliced apple, then cottage cheese or ricotta mixed with a sweetener of choice, lots of cinnamon on top. Broil til bubbly - mock cheese Danish :D
|
For me (as a pregnant dieter) I have found that toast is the only thing (when I had morning sickness) that made me feel good so I had it all the time :)
My favourites included: Jam light philly beans tinned tomatoes sardines Though if you are looking for something filling go with something like beans as the fibre keeps you full for ages and then also include some mushrooms, egg etc. My other favourite with reduced calorie cheddar is welsh rarebit. My hubby makes the perfect one and every now and again I get a craving for it. |
OOOOOHHHH Tinned sardines all the way!
Teeny squirt of ketchup instead of butter or spread. I know ketchup has sugar in it but it does add to the flavour! |
Thanks for starting this thread. There are a lot of good ideas here, stuff I hadn't even thought to put on toast! I don't often have toast but will keep these in mind when I'm craving a change!
|
I LOVE my toast with white cheese (i don't know which one you could use, the one i use is specific to my region) and some sliced mango. It's delicious!

Ooo toast! What is really like to have is "fried" mushrooms and garlic or "fried" spinach and garlic. Cook them in a frying pan but without oil (use a squirt of cooking spray if your non stick pan doesn't work). Garlic is super good for you and delicious. I always add chilli seeds and pepper too but I like my food spicy!

I think this is my new favorite thread!

Literally JUST had this:
Organic White Beans Roma Tomatoes Avacado In a seperate bowl whisk together olive oil, garlic powder, teeny bit of mustard, salt & pepper, dried basil leaves. Add this to the salad. Refrigerate for a couple of hours. Then add this to a piece of toast. Or eat it plain! |
Throw back, WW recipe. My Mom loved this in the 70's!
slice of bread, cottage cheese, blueberries, dash with cinnamon, and broil! Takes a bit to get the knack of it, but good stuff!:D |
Hi peeps - I'm going to have to get my soap box out a little - as a Hand Baker by profession I have to say some of the stuff they put in 'marketed as low calorie' breads would make your hair curl - the amount of salt and artificial sweeteners alone are amazing. A wholemeal home made bread is usually about 70-80 cals for a thin slice - my soap box is away now. Anyway - I'm Italian Descent and 'On Toast' is something we do really well! Lightly crushed baby plum tomatoes with some torn fresh basil, a little salt, crushed black pepper and a teeny drizzle of olive oil is lovely. As is thinly sliced raw mushrooms tossed in a drop or two of truffle oil and scattered over a lightly poached egg on toast. Our favourite though is cooked borlotti beans, tossed with a little fresh chilli and a scant grating of parmesan and then squished into some hot toast before placing under a hot grill until bubbling. All of these are well under your calorie requirement. :) Enjoy.

I live near a couple of Chinese supermarkets which sell beautiful fresh tofu, nothing like the rubbery stuff you get in supermarkets or most health food shops. Mash some of that up with a bit of pesto and it's fabulous on toast. Or a bit of sundried tomato paste. Or a dab of olive oil, a sprinkle of salt and a bigger sprinkle of herbs (za'atar is great if you can get it).
What is this Weight Watchers Bread? I agree, it sounds suspect. And probably unsatisfying. I bought myself a nice little bread machine in August, £60 for the Lakeland one (takes up far less space on the worktop and makes an excellent sized loaf for one or two people), and now that I'm making my own sourdough (dead quick and easy, don't worry), I've found that it's so much more filling and sustaining than supermarket bread, not to mention delicious. I quite happily have just one slice of that for breakfast, whereas with other breads I'd need two slices. Much, much healthier, too, and the difference in flavour is unbelievable. It's not really sour, though it has more of a sourdough flavour when I leave the machine on delay timer overnight. Apparently sourdough is much better for your blood sugar, to the point that white sourdough beats wholemeal non-sourdough hands down. |
first to consider: if you are eating bread, what kind of bread? Most bread brands are loaded with sugar and additives! Get yourself freshly baked bread and freeze the slices. As for fillings: Hummus (good protein and fats), kale , spinach, rocket etc.. so greens! Tomatoes (even sun dried are a good variation at times). if you eat animal products just be careful what you use, most meats (like ham etc) are not healthy and have way too much saturated fats as well as chemicals.

I just wanted to comment on your baked beans.

I'm just reading back over this thread and decided that I want to try this. It sounds so good and refreshing, but I will eat it as is instead of on toast. Bread raises my blood sugar. |
When my Mom was doing WW back in the 70's!:dizzy: 1 slice of whole wheat bread, fresh blue berries, topped with cottage cheese, a dash of cinnamon, and broil it! It was yummy! Still is!
