California bans Trans Fats in restaurants

  • I have just read this in the latest copy of EHN, my professional journal:

California has become the first US state to ban the use of trans fats in restaurants:

  • Interesting, to say the least.
  • I think it shows that restaurants dont give a hoot about our health when it comes to money. It seems like a positive thing to ban them though.
  • I've been trying to avoid trans fats/hydrogenated oils/fats for some time now.

I wonder how long an initiative like that will take to be implemented in the UK?

  • Well, the US have already had the nutritional info system in their restaurants for a while now (I'm not sure how reliable they are, but they're something) - I think considering we haven't anything like this in place yet it will take a while for the trans fat ban.

Really? We are far behind then. Pizza Express won't give any NV out at all as they say they are hand made and therefore differ with each pizza. But an _idea_ of what they contain many help

In this day and age with allergies and intolerances, you'd think they have a duty of care to provide ingredients without being asked!

  • This is very true. I think with all of the pressure the government puts on us as a nation for being overweight (like having to pay for or being denied hospital treatment) that they'd do something about like the US. I agree though, we're far behind and I think companies & the government need to back up their accusations and help us help ourselves!
  • I don't want to be a debbie downer here, but I live in California and if this were true it would be a BIG news story here. I went to all my major news sites that I ready daily and I don't see anything that backs this up.
I wish it were true! It would make our lives easier and the rest of the world would follow.
However, I have noticed that since New York started putting calorie counts on everything, that California is following in some resturants. More like big chaines. At least that is a step in the right direction.
