Vegetarian?

I'm a vegetarian and have been for 5 years now, I believe that this has alot to do with my weight as ever since i became veggie, it was just easier to go to bakers oven and grab a cheese and onion pasty.
I was wondering if anyone else here was vegetarian and whether they knew of any good recipes, but not necessarily just for quorn. :)
Would love to hear from you :)

HI there! Welcome to a fellow veggie!

I am now 47 and have been veggie since I was 21. However at the moment I am not eating very healthily.

Have a look at out recipes in the sticky bit at the top of the UK chicks posts and also have a nosey at the ww vegetarian recipes on the site. Also Weightwatchers and Slimmer's World have some recipes on their sites. I used to go to Slimmer's World as, at the time they were more veggie friendly that WW(I had been there too). Also you can look at vegsoc.org - they have a HUGE database of recipes. Try Rose Elliott's vegetarian slimming (buy or Library) too.

Hope this gives you food for thought

hi, i'm vegetarian too! i find recipes all over the place or adapt ones from cookbooks. i also just throw things together a lot! i eat a lot of salads at the moment and i LOVE feta cheese!

A veggie...in France? haven't they had you shot yet???!!!

frenchie 06-13-2007 11:41 AM

not yet! some people still give me strange looks and think i must be a religious freak but in general its becoming more accepted...

Bloody hard to eat out in France though as I found - unless you find an 'Ethnic' restaurant -eg Thai/Middle eastern. Mind you, not as bad as in Bruges - I mean I love the place but can I have a salad (at least) without ham or fish in it???!

frenchie 06-13-2007 12:52 PM

i usually eat italian coz i LOVE pizza! but also chinese is usually possible. if youre at a french restaurant the only option is generally omelette which you may/may not have to ask specially for. you certainly wouldnt find much at a "posh" restaurant but i'm not, so it works out quite well! re salads, french people tend to think that if you dont eat meat it means you dont eat beef/pork, but you do eat fish and poultry, hence the non vegetarian salad situation. but if you ask for things without item X theres not usually a problem...

There are loads of diet friendly and healthy vegetarian options. Fatfreevegan.com is one of my favorite places to search for recipes. I hadn’t considered that it might be much harder to be veg overseas. Is veganism unheard of in France? Feel free to come join us in the “vegetarian chicks” section of the forum under “food”.

its not unheard of by the culturally aware, but it is relatively unknown and considered completely alien!

Having said that Frenchie - I did find a veggie restaurant in Paris! in Montmartre. It was very old school though - heavy wholemeal pastry pies etc but quite nice. We hunted down another one but it must have closed down -or been run out of town!

Don't get me wrong - I didn't starve......

I'm a veggie too. I tend to eat lots of pasta, eggs etc at the moment. I'm trying to stop eating so much cheese so I can loose some weight, but it's been harder than i thought.

Have you ever got a jacket potatoe, cut it in half, scoop out all the potatoe in side+mix in with cheese.. put back in the skins in the halfs and put in the oven to cook. Use less cheese than in a jacket potato and cheese like that. emm when jus hungry i end up eating bean burgers etc because I don't particually like corn.

hmm.. I'm really not a healthy veggie lol!

Littlebb - that used to be my fave sunday tea with the folks - stuffed spuds - with garlic salt on 'em -oooh! Luverrly. Another one was a dish where you build up - mashed potatoe, egg, tomatoes and onion with cheese in the layers as well. Gorjuss!

peacock 2 08-15-2007 12:27 PM

My god I cannot believe I spelt potato with an 'e' - I never do that!!!

Forgot to say you then bake it until golden on top- yummy but maybe not slimming!

Veggie here too! :carrot:

I find stir-fries fab for healthy eating. Lots of peppers, onions, cabbage and whatever else is in the fridge. For a bit of extra protein chuck in some tofu or a tin of black eyed beans or chickpeas. Really tasty and if you have a non-stick wok you need next to no oil.
