What is Curves?

  • I was told it's a small group of women who work out together and they give you a fitness plan and 6 weeks to reach goal?? They must only take people of a certain weight then..Has anyone else been? Anyone had success with it.

I really don't want to give up my plan cos it works but my friend wants me to go along with her for support and i haven't really been excercising for a bit now, also kinda feel bad cos i been puttuing it off for some time and she ALWAYS supports me.

    Thanks in advance..
  • It's just a ladies' gym.

I've never been - I'm not bothered about seeing men grunt and sweat! If you already have a gym membership or the gyms in your area are cheaper than curves then I'd go to the gyms... They can also give you a 6 week program for fat loss/muscle gain/improved fitness/greater stamina, anything you want!
  • Frus is correct, it's a workout place for women only, no men allowed.

It's a circuit of machines that you use and it takes 30 minutes to complete the circuit.

The six week program that your friend has heard about is the curves diet plan. It involves weekly discussion meetings and choices for foods to help you lose weight and the use of their protein shakes as well as some other stuff.

You can just join and do the six week plan which does more of the diet side and you use the circuit as well...and if you've lost and done well, walk away, but most people then end up sticking to the circuit and join with a full membership to work out. The six week plan is only offered three times a year....I only just found that out myself.

If you want to join just for the exercise, it's a fun place to go, especially if you don't like being around sweaty grunting men and you're under no obligation to do the six week food plan either...you can even ask to try it out free for a week with a free pass to see if you like it or not.

    Hope this helps.
  • What Chris said Also they take people of any weight. I've never seen anyone being refused cos they were too heavy. It's fun and you get to know the people when you go on a regular basis.
  • Ok i do like an all women's gym.

I also used to love circuits in P.E back at school, it was so much fun maybe i'll enjoy it. So the 6 week prog is only offered 3 times a year? So if your not on the 6 week programme..you can just do circuits with everyone anyway?

I like the sound of this maybe i'll just go for the groups excercise and stick to my SW food wise.Have any of you ladies actually been?

Chris and I joined in 2002. We're still not thin but it does work I'm on medical leave at the minute but Chris still goes and she will be working there part time. She's there at the minute aren't you my friend.
  • Yes, you can just join and go any time you like for your workouts without doing their food plan...if SW is working for you, keep at it, all the exericse will do is help you along. Both CG and myself have lost a load of weight by doing WW and curves and while we may not be thin at the moment, we're fitter and more active than we were which is a good thing...and before we both moved away from one another a few years ago, we were looking pretty trim even if I do say so myself....
  • I don't know about the UK, but in the States curves is a women's gym. They dont give you a health plan to follow though.
  • Oh my God curves was sooooooo good today. It's only 3 times round the circuit and i really get hyped and energetic cos i know it's not that long so i work so hard and i got everyone counting and really doing a fierce workout.

I also met this girl today she was their first member, joined 4 months ago was 18 stone and is now 16 stone She lost 7 pounds for two months consistently.!!!
  • I didn't like Curves, but mostly because when I went I was 19 and felt very much younger than everyone else (which, actually really wasn't a bad thing, I just *felt* out of place).
AND because at the time I felt that it wasn't a very good strength training workout. BUT, it is still 10x better than doing nothing (like I've been doing lately) and there is the comraderie of women there and it is very low key, not intimidating or unfriendly.
    Those are my impressions anyway........
  • Shrinkinchicka- i kinda agree with you on their being lots of older ladies there..and it kinda isn't really that intense but i always put in 100% so i can really get the benefits. It's just so much fun and if im having fun, excercising, making new friends and losing weight then this one is most def a keeper!!

I was also told 30 minutes on the circuit is equivalent to 1hr30 mins at the gym??
