Pancake Day tomorrow!

What are you having on yours?

And what (if anything) are you giving up for Lent?

I'm going to probably have a banana pancake, or I might take this tin of pineapple home that's been sitting on my desk for weeks and weeks and weeks!

As for the Lent thing, I'm debating between chocolate and... er... shopping (as in gratuitous spending). :dunno:

YP1 02-19-2007 12:05 PM

I've found a cheese and lentil pancake recipe I might try, although I might relent and have a sweet one instead, if so it has to be hot cherries. I don't think I'll give anything up for lent this year, I'm still off what I gave up last year!

katie_oxo 02-19-2007 12:37 PM

Pancake will be lemon juice for me and if really necessary I'll add a light sprinkle of canderel mmm

Sarah Ann 02-19-2007 12:50 PM

I'm having mine stuffed (a bit like cannelloni) - I'm going to put a aubergine/courgette/pepper/tomato mixture in them .... and then put a cheese sauce over and bake it in the oven. Then DH will have yet more pancakes with the traditional lemon and sugar or maple syrup.

I don't normally give anything up for Lent - I haven't really kept fully to my New Years resolutions so I suppose I might try for one of those.... maybe I'll give up cheese (again). :(

micheleherts 02-19-2007 01:37 PM

I shall be giving up cakes, biscuits etc as I did last year. However I shall resume come Easter Sunday I am not as strong as Helen. Although I am veggie already so I couldn't do that.

Antari 02-19-2007 01:41 PM

I'm a Vegan, so don't bother with pancakes at all! :p

Doughnut 02-19-2007 03:20 PM

Um, I don't actually like pancakes much so I won't be having any - just a waste of calories where I'm concerned.

This year I'm giving up chocolate and any chocolate bits (e.g. choc chip cookies), sweets (except gum) and cakes. I do it every year to shift some pounds but come Easter Day :moo: Note i don't give up biscuits - that'd be like Sarah giving up cheese ;)

weemissnaughty 02-19-2007 04:41 PM

hmm probably lemon juice!!!! yummie!! (grrr pancake tuesday bein on the 2nd day of my diet lol!!)
hmmmm i dunno what to give up, chocolate? (except high lights hot choco!!!!i cudnt give that up!) oh oh and donner kebabs!!!!

KarieH 02-20-2007 08:52 AM

I am not having any:(

For anyone thinking that flour eggs and milk are unhealthy, then you can use skimmed milk and rye/wholemeal flour (Ooooh rye flour pancakes  )

OR

You can make them really balanced with some good protein by whizzing 2-4 egg whites (or 1-2 whole eggs) with 1/2 C cottage cheese with 1/2C oats. If you find this a bit thick, you can add water to make thinner pancakes. I'm planning on making cottage cheese pancakes until I remembered the Rye flour... :chin: I might do both!

YP1 02-20-2007 12:04 PM

I'm using wholemeal flour and skimmed milk. I've decided against savoury pancakes, I'm going to have some cauliflower soup and then go for the sweet stuff. I've got some cherries I'm going to heat up, and I've also got some marscapone in the fridge which I suspect will be very nice on top...

devil ish 02-20-2007 01:56 PM

'Fraid I've been unhealthy n had normal pancakes, just 2 though. One with strawberries n a dab of cream (naughty) n one with lemon a tad sugar....delicious :o

Pancake Day? Fill in a born and raised CA girl on what this is!

Sounds yummy....

YP1 02-20-2007 02:40 PM

Shrove Tuesday, the last day before lent, it's traditional to eat erm... pancakes :D

My batter has been standing while I made my soup. I'm just eating that, then it's back into the kitchen for pancake fun :)

YP1 02-20-2007 03:55 PM

I'm stuffed :)

I kind of feel like I ought to give something up now to make up for the pancake fest that's just gone on.

katie_oxo 02-20-2007 04:51 PM

I'm so jealous, have just come in from an evening at my brother in laws and I've not even had a sniff of a pancake :(

redsoxgirl 02-20-2007 04:53 PM

I just researched this online.....sounds yummy, I had never heard of it before.

sarahgrace 02-20-2007 04:53 PM

this is for the slimming world eating plan which i am trying to get back into at the moment
syns per recipe:
6½ Syns on Green and Original

Ingredients:
1 tbsp chocolate spread
50g canned black cherries
Very low fat natural yogurt

Method:
1. Warm the natural yogurt over a bowl of boiling water. Stir in the chocolate spread until completely blended with the natural yogurt.

2. Heat the cherries in a pan or microwave until hot and gooey.

3. Pour the cherries into the middle of your pancake and wrap. Drizzle over the chocolaty goo and enjoy!

So a pancake isn't an american pancake...its more like a crepe, right?

Mmmm. Crepe.

Thanks for filling in a clueless American.

weemissnaughty 02-20-2007 07:57 PM

mmm yummie pancakes - nahh i dont make mines like crepes tho i make mine all chunkie!! just had one (biig) pancake wiv lemon juice in and sum sugar  luvely! do other people prefer them thin or thick? big argument bout that in my household lol!!!

YP1 02-21-2007 03:37 AM

I definitely prefer thin pancakes.

2frustrated 02-21-2007 03:43 AM

We had thin rye flour pancakes and I stuffed my face with just about everything else too! I got home starving, but had to wait for DH to get home for pancakes - I should've just eaten my own and then done his when he got back  So I ate a chocolate muffin that was floating around in the cupboard, and nuts, and then I went and had cheese on my pancake, then I had a choc ice and somewhere inbetween making pancakes and eating pancakes I ate a flapjack, then I had another flapjack while I was reading in bed  Bringing yesterday's grand calorie total to 3000 :o :tantrum: SIGH. Well today is another (non-pancake) day and I'm giving up chocolate and cakes for lent. Telling this to DH he said, "But you don't eat chocolate. Or cakes..." What a healthy impression I must give off! This is the man that LIVES with me   I have a piece of chocolate every day, but I am giving that up, and I will give up bakery stuff too, I don't really eat much of that but after last night I don't even want to eat healthy stuff :barf:

Oh and thin normal pancakes but the cottage cheese pancakes I make turn out quite thick :T

No.... size/thickness is just a matter of choice. I made one batch in a large pan but fairly thin so I could easily wrap them around the vegetable filling I then baked them in a low fat cheese sauce - but I then made another batch (same recipe) all for DH which I made in a smaller pan but thicker.... and he ate the lot with sweet toppings. I thought he was going to explode.

bits 02-21-2007 04:23 PM

Pancakes are just so more-ish. I knew that if I ate one I'd go on to eat way too many, so didn't dare risk it. I like the thin ones best, with plain old simple lemon and sugar - yum :)
