Science of food - did anyone watch last night?

  • Did anyone see the BBC programme "the science of food" last night. It had some great tips and brilliant explanations about why some diets help you lose weight and feel full longer.

The key suggestions were that you should:
    - eat a diet high in protein (as this makes you feel full longer),

    - eat a diet high in calcium (preferable from low fat dairy - as this makes you excrete twice as much fat as a low calcium diet. The calcium binds to the fat in the gut and you can't absorb it!)

    - eat soup as the liquid bulks out the food and slows it leaving the stomach meaning that you feel full longer. They said you should imagine your stomach like a sieve, if you drink water and eat solid food the water flows through the sieve quickly leaving your stomach emptier and you more hungry than if you eat a soup which would sit on the sieve and slowly trickle through.

    - and of course, the one we all know anyway, watch your portion size.

Did anyone think the programme had some good insights? Is anyone going to try to follow their tips?
  • I recorded it but didn't watch it, I'll see if I have any thoughts when I get round to it.
  • I watched it last night, I liked the bit with the two friends, one overweight and one underweight, who both genuinely believed they ate the same amounts as each other and put the difference down to metabolism, however it transpired the overweight girl ate 50% more than her skinny friend. Quite an eye-opener!
  • I'm going to try the high protein breakfast and soup for lunch combo - what they were saying made sense.

Also, the difference it made to the woman's body shape was amazing. It's horrible to think of all that fat around your organs - I wish I could have the MRI scan she had as I think it would be a great big kick in the butt.

What was the high protein breakfast?
  • Two scrambled eggs or bacon (or both if you were inclined). I think for the eggs, to keep the cholesterol down, it would be fine to have one whole egg filled out with another egg white. Very Atkins really - but you were allowed a piece of toast! The key was any protein you like as long as it's lean.
  • Missed this. I was in the club collecting fag ash smells on my hair and jacket. Grrrrrrr!!!!
  • I will vouch for soup, by the way. I eat it pretty much every day and it's done me no harm

If you missed it go to the link above (it turns out the programme is called "The Truth About Food" and not "The Science of Food" that I've been saying all along.) You can then watch the tests that they did and see whether you think it would work for yourself.
  • I love this programme - I accidentally watched the first one and I'm hooked now.

I like the easy to understand way they give information - I loved the one with Fiona Bruce, the truckers and fibre - very funny.

I'm trying out the soup theory and the dairy theory - not so sure about the protein theory because I'm not so keep on having that kind of breakfast - but I might give it a try if I stop losing weight completely.
