Hope everyone is doing well. I got my hair cut last Saturday. It's back to being curly. The hairdresser cut off all the dead hair from the straightening iron that I had been using over the months. I swore to her that I wouldn't use it again, but I'm beginning to get sick of this curl and frizz already!

Did you see Idol last night? Vonzell is still there. They are having a huge party for here at Centennial Park on Friday and giving her the key to the city. This is so exciting for our small town!

Everyone have a great day and love to all of you!

Carol101 05-12-2005 06:46 AM

Sherry: Count me in. I too have gained quite a bit since last year and it is time to start eating healthy. I am going to try for one whole day of good food only!!!

Shelley: I want a new pic of that new hair cut!! I bet it looks great.

Gayle: How are you and your mom doing?

Dee: I am always amazed at how upbeat you are with all you have been through and are going through. Could you send a little of that my way. I have been so down in the dumps and so tired of hurting all the time. How do you do it??

Gotta run. I am heading to the ankle specialist today. Hoping for good news.

Love & Hugs
Carol

It's nice to come here and see some postings.

Carol, mom is doing well, probably better then expected considering everything she went thru. She continues to have good days and bad, the good days are starting to out-weigh the bad days though. THANK GOODNESS! It is 10 weeks since she started us on this wonderful journey! She still has 11 weeks of cardio therapy, which they say will help gain strength back.

Ramona, how is everything going for the family? Prayers sent sweetie.

Shelley, I think the big V should win AI. Either V or Bo... if I get to choose! Are you going to the celebration????

Sher, I think you are making wise choices, honestly, dieting should not be about dieting, it should be about choosing a healthy lifestyle you can live with. Now, if only I would take my own advice!!! :-)

Dee, how is the weather there??? We went from freezing to burning all in the same week. We had tornado warnings last night in the area. In Kansas, just as soon as snow blizzards are no longer a threat, then tornado season starts!

Did all of you have a nice Mother's Day???

Hugs sent today for a wonderful day!

Love, Gayle

Carol101 05-12-2005 05:57 PM

Gayle: You are right about what you said to Sherry. She is doing it the right way. Now, if only I could take my own advice as well.

Here are some smart tips that might help all of us.

1. Add just one fruit or veggie serving daily. Get comfortable with that, then add an extra serving until you reach 8 to 10 a day.

2. Eat at least two servings of a fruit or veggie at every meal.

3. Resolve never to supersize your food portions--unless you want to supersize your clothes.

4. Make eating purposeful, not mindless. Whenever you put food in your mouth, peel it, unwrap it, plate it, and sit. Engage all of the senses in the pleasure of nourishing your body.

5. Start eating a big breakfast. It helps you eat fewer total calories throughout the day.

6. Make sure your plate is half veggies and/or fruit at both lunch and dinner.

7. Eating out? Halve it, and bag the rest. A typical restaurant entree has 1,000 to 2,000 calories, not even counting the bread, appetizer, beverage, and dessert.

8. When dining out, make it automatic: Order one dessert to share.

9. Use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate.

10. See what you eat. Plate your food instead of eating out of the jar or bag.

11. Eat the low-cal items on your plate first, then graduate. Start with salads, veggies, and broth soups, and eat meats and starches last. By the time you get to them, you'll be full enough to be content with smaller portions of the high-calorie choices.

12. Instead of whole milk, switch to 1 percent. If you drink one 8-oz glass a day, you'll lose 5 lb in a year.

13. Juice has as many calories, ounce for ounce, as soda. Set a limit of one 8-oz glass of fruit juice a day.

14. Get calories from foods you chew, not beverages. Have fresh fruit instead of fruit juice.

15. Keep a food journal. It really works wonders.

16. Follow the Chinese saying: "Eat until you are eight-tenths full."

17. Use mustard instead of mayo.

18. Eat more soup. The noncreamy ones are filling but low-cal.

19. Cut back on or cut out caloric drinks such as soda, sweet tea, lemonade, etc. People have lost weight by making just this one change. If you have a 20-oz bottle of Coca-Cola every day, switch to Diet Coke. You should lose 25 lb in a year.

20. Take your lunch to work.

21. Sit when you eat.

22. Dilute juice with water.

23. Have mostly veggies for lunch.

24. Eat at home.

25. Limit alcohol to weekends.

How Can I Eat More Veggies?

26. Have a V8 or tomato juice instead of a Diet Coke at 3 pm.

27. Doctor your veggies to make them delicious: Dribble maple syrup over carrots, and sprinkle chopped nuts on green beans.

28. Mix three different cans of beans and some diet Italian dressing. Eat this three-bean salad all week.

29. Don't forget that vegetable soup counts as a vegetable.

30. Rediscover the sweet potato.

31. Use prebagged baby spinach everywhere: as "lettuce" in sandwiches, heated in soups, wilted in hot pasta, and added to salads.

32. Spend the extra few dollars to buy vegetables that are already washed and cut up.

33. Really hate veggies? Relax. If you love fruits, eat plenty of them; they are just as healthy (especially colorful ones such as oranges, mangoes, and melons).

34. Keep seven bags of your favorite frozen vegetables on hand. Mix any combination, microwave, and top with your favorite low-fat dressing. Enjoy 3 to 4 cups a day. Makes a great quick dinner.

Mantra that will you Stick to My Diet

35. "The best portion of high-calorie foods is the smallest one. The best portion of vegetables is the largest one. Period."

36. "I'll ride the wave. My cravings will disappear after 10 minutes if I turn my attention elsewhere."

37. "I want to be around to see my grandchildren, so I can forgo a cookie now."

38. "I am a work in progress."

39. "It's more stressful to continue being fat than to stop overeating."

Mistakes that you could Be Making without Realizing It?

40. Skipping meals. Many healthy eaters "diet by day and binge by night."

41. Don't "graze" yourself fat. You can easily munch 600 calories of pretzels or cereal without realizing it.

42. Eating pasta like crazy. A serving of pasta is 1 cup, but some people routinely eat 4 cups.

43. Eating supersize bagels of 400 to 500 calories for snacks.

44. Ignoring "Serving Size" on the Nutrition Facts panel.

45. Snacking on bowls of nuts. Nuts are healthy but dense with calories. Put those bowls away, and use nuts as a garnish instead of a snack.

Hope some of these find their way into my WOL.

Hugs to all
Carol

Hi Carol! I'm here... just running between the two homes. Thank you for the helpful suggestions, I learned some things I would of never thought of doing on my own.

Rain and fog here today, how is the weather for the rest of you???

coles 05-13-2005 01:28 PM

Hi Everyone,

I am out here lurking still. I read all the posts. Monday is the day I am starting back on program. I also go back to the doctor for more blood work. I think if he could get my thyroid back under control I will have an easier time with the weight. I was sitting at the same weight for four weeks and not cheating, I got so discouraged with the scale that I gave up.

ShelleyM 05-13-2005 06:26 PM

I'm here. Just not feeling very well. I think I'm getting a UC flare-up. My stomach has been real yucky. I will be doing my running tomorrow though no matter what!

gdeann 05-13-2005 11:49 PM

Shelley, I hope your feeling better by the AM! Get a good nights sleep and maybe you'll feel like running.

Hello everyone and thanks for all your kind words.
The last week has been a whirlwind of emotions and people in and out of my house. There was a funeral, with full military honors, for Blake Sunday in North Carolina and then we flew him home on Monday. The graveside service and burial were Wednesday in our family cemetery. The Army honor guard from Ft. Sill presented full military honors and even the Post Commander came to present the flag to Mary Anne. It is a six hour drive from Ft. Sill, so we were certainly honored. Our minister and my dad spoke at the ceremony and it was very moving.
I'm very worried about Rick. He was totally devestated. He and Blake were born 11 months apart, so they were more like twins. The other two brothers are having a very difficult time also. Rick left this morning to go and stay with Ben for a week. I'm hoping that it will help him to be with his son. I've basically just zoned out in front of the TV all day. I'm so tired and now that Rick isn't here to see me, I can have my time to grieve.
I wanted to tell you something very eerie that happened. The boys' uncle forwarded an email to us that Blake wrote on the day before he was killed. The entire email was about how he wished he could come home to stay, about how he misses the old home place (which is where the cemetery is) and how he wished he and Mary Anne could come and sit on that beautiful hillside for the rest of their lives. Well, now he is there. After we read the email, we were talking about how we would like to buy some concrete benches to put underneath the trees and sit and listen to the birds sing. Not a minute later the phone rang and a friend of ours wanted to know if we would like to have the concrete benches from in front of the McDonalds that is being torn down. The whole thing just sent chills down my spine. Kind of like what happened with the picture of Gayle's friend.
I had to make all the arrangements locally and for the memorial handout I picked the Diamond Rio song "I believe". If you aren't familiar with it, you should look up the lyrics. The first line reads "everynow and then, soft as breath upon my skin, I fell you come back again..." After the 21 gun salute, I was reading it as the honor guard was folding the flag and all of a sudden a beautiful breeze began to blow and the birds broke out into song as if on cue.
Well, I've babbled enough. I've got to try and get some things done and get some thank you notes written. I've also got to go to the funeral home. This past Saturday, a friend and co-worker of mine was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. I just can't go to the funeral, so I'm going by to sign the book.
I love you all and hopefully tomorrow I'll have a clear enough head to read all the posts and address each of you. Take care everyone.

ShelleyM 05-14-2005 06:32 PM

Ramona- :grouphug: The benches are such a wonderful idea and a very beautiful gesture on McDonald's part.

Carol101 05-15-2005 07:51 AM

Ramona:

I know the Lord works in mysteries ways and that has been proven to you in several ways. It gives me chills and makes me feel good at the same time. I know a time like this is very difficult but you are striving to look for all the good signs God is sending your way. Hang in there. We love you.

Love and big hugs.
Carol

I totally agree there is a presence around if people open up to it. They say if one really watches, there are all types of things that happen around us but most peaple just are too busy to notice. It's funny you mentioned the funeral Ramona. The day of Nancy's funeral, it was dark and dreary all day through even to the cemetary. As the minister mentioned her baby now being back home with his mom a bright ray of light peeked from the clouds and we had a minute or two of sunlight. I decided to not even mention it, but as we drove away Steve asked me if I noticed. I truly believe our loved ones continue to watch us and guide us throughout our lifetime. The benches sound like a wonderful idea, if Rick can help in anyway, maybe that will help ease his pain.

I hope everyone is ok, Shelley are you feeling better??? Carol & Janice, good luck with the doctor visit, keep us updated. Dee, are you feeling better too???? Sherry, how is Wayne?

I tried the mandarin chicken salad from Wendy's, it's yummy! ALTHOUGH, you will probably want to skip the sesame dressing (250 cals) and fried noodles that comes with it! I had the salad and used the small package of sliced almonds, I then used my light Raspberry vinigrette from home, it was a really good salad and something different. I'm down a few more pounds this week! If I can just keep the stress under control and stay in the right mindset.

gdeann 05-16-2005 02:00 PM

Mom had fluid buildup on her lungs again today when they did a chest x-ray. I am to take her in later today for another fluid tap. Hopefully this won't be an on-going problem.

WHERE the HECK is EVERYONE????????????? :-)
