Steel Magnolias -- #4

Good Morning! It's another cloudy windy day in my neighborhood. We've been to church, out for breakfast, changed clothes, and snuggled in for the rest of the day. Both of us commented on a nap sounding good. Losing an hour of sleep is hard on my old body. The program last night was Mike Farris, a band, and two back-up singers. He held a microphone with a cord attached, then hopped and ran from one end of the stage to the other moving the mic stand as he went by. He wore a cowboy hat so we never did see his face. Weird imo! I'm not sure what to classify his music as, but think it was billed as jazz and blues. Whatever, it was loud, and not our type. Afterwards Bob said he thought about leaving at intermission and I wish we would have!

I need to reset the living room clocks and lamp timers while I'm thinking about it. Hope you are enjoying a warm and sunny Sunday!

gma22 03-13-2017 07:25 AM

Good morning to you all. It is cool and rainy this morning. I don't know if we are supposed to get rain all day or what, but I know Tuesday-Thursday it is supposed to be sunny as we are going to put the computer desk out for Salvation Army to pick up on Wednesday.

We did commissary shopping yesterday and it was lovely and quiet. I think people either forgot to set their clocks ahead or decided to sleep in an extra hour as it was deserted almost. That's the way I like to shop. This poor young woman was sitting on the bench just inside the door when I returned the electric cart to it's parking place. She was on crutches and had a broken leg. I ask her if she wanted the cart and she said she did. I also told her that there were about 5 more available. I said they only parked two right by the entrance, but down in front of the cash registers there was one sitting plugged in and down at the opposite end of the cash registers were 4 or 5 more. I can't believe no one saw her sitting there and ask her if she needed a cart. I don't how long she had been sitting there waiting.

I have 4 of the knitted squares done. I am trying to get one done everyday. My hands can't stand more than that recently. This weather is really making them ache.

I have a new dress coming today that I have to sign for. I guess because it has been shipped from India. This company gives work to the poor women in India. They do hand embroidery on the dresses. I also want to do the touch ups on the desk and see how that goes and unload it all. I need to do dusting today too.

Jean: I bet you thought I needed buttons that looked like owls not buttons to sew onto owls. I think I would have left at intermission too. I hate super loud concerts anyway. I so wanted to shut off the alarm yesterday morning and go back to sleep, but I got up anyway and got around so we could get the shopping done. We drive past several churches on our way to the commissary and I noticed parking lots were pretty empty when usually they are full. There is this one little church in the town where the Navy base is. It is a different name now, but it was the church Jack and I went to decades ago when we were stationed there and I was pregnant with Jay. It had the old style tip down wooden theater seats. Uncomfortable for a pregnant lady for sure. Anyhow, that poor little church is still open, but you never see more than 4-5 cars there for services. I don't know how they afford to keep their doors open. When we went past yesterday there were no cars there at all so I am wondering if they canceled Sunday School and did just a worship service. When we drove back by around 10:45 there sat the 5 cars.

Everyone have a great day today!

Jean 03-13-2017 02:34 PM

Good Afternoon! We got up to a drift of snow in front of the garage doors and a clean driveway until the end where the city plow went by. Weird looking. The weatherman said we have 6" of new snow. There wasn't much church money to count this morning. The automatic deposits from the bank were not correct so we couldn't include that today. Hope it is an easy fix and we can do it next week. The gift shop did a nice business last week and I have that ready to deposit. A load of towels is in the washer and will vacuum fur bunnies after the trip to the bank. Other than that nothing else on my agenda for today.

"Gma," I did think the hat was in the shape of an owl. It is so cute! I get a kick out of the animal hats the kids are wearing now. I miss buying the cutesy things for the grandkids. Our attendance sheet said we had 53 in first service and 62 at second service. I didn't think to check Saturday night but with the snow I'll bet the attendance was lower there also. It was nice of you to explain, to the lady, where the carts could be located. There is a gal who has her own motorized chair/scooter and she lives close to one of the grocery stores. She is very rude and will run into your cart if you don't move out of her way. She has one of those orange flags and zips catty whompas across the parking lot like she owns it. I haven't seen her this winter so maybe she has moved.

I need to head to the banks. Hope you are enjoying a marvelous Monday!

gma22 03-14-2017 07:27 AM

Good morning to you all. Cold here this morning and looks like in the next couple weeks we are going to get a heck of a lot of rain. I am just glad it isn't snow!

I put the stain on the computer desk yesterday. It toned down the bare places a bit, but I am not going to put more on it. Either they take it or not. It is sturdy and well made and would be a great desk for someone so I hope they just take it tomorrow.

I have got 5 squares done for the blanket so have 44 to go! If I do one a day I will get them done with time to get it sewn together. I just hope I have enough time to then get the pillow sham done as I already bought the pillow that goes inside it.

I have a wax melt thingy coming today then tomorrow I have another lamp and my Jersey Boys movie tape. I have had a heck of a time finding it for some reason and WM had it online so I ordered it. On Friday the new computer chair will be delivered.

I got my dress yesterday and it is very pretty. The lavender color is just lovely and I know now why it cost $30 more than the other dresses they have. The whole dress is embroidered. It has one of those handkerchief hems and supposed to hit you mid calf, but my legs are so short it is floor length, which is great. It has what they call flutter sleeves too.

Jean: The hat was really easy to make. It used cabling for the owls and I can easily do cabling work now. I never got to buy cute stuff for the boys. If I did it was a waste of money as the boys never wore it. I have a toddler outfit I bought for Thomas for Easter that is brand new and he never got. Ahh well. I told Jack the other day I am only going to make baby blankets for new babies from now on. They don't let them wear the hats or shoes I make so I am not going to all the trouble of doing it. My brother-in-law was like that with his scooter. He would go through the mall and actually run over people who didn't get out of his way. I do everything I can to avoid that and I apologize and say excuse me a bazillion times so people don't think I am rude. Sometimes the walkers in the mall can be pretty rude and walk right in front of you. I have narrowly missed them a couple times and they don't watch their kids either and I almost ran a little boy down when he ran in front of me. I entered a contest for a free cruise on Princess. It is pretty stripped down though. It is an ocean view cabin for 2 and that's it. No airfare, or spending money or anything.

Everyone have a nice day and stay warm and dry.

Jean 03-14-2017 03:09 PM

Good Afternoon! The sun was out for about an hour before the clouds took over again. It was 6 degrees when I came downstairs this morning; it's 40 now. Crazy weather; more snow coming tonight. I'm waiting for Bob to come home. We are heading to Sioux City; he wants a new bed pillow and needs a new bathroom rug. We are taking Beth and family out for supper to celebrate her promotion to customer service manager at work. She's been working towards that for a long time. I don't know why but every time anyone moves up the ladder they get the crappy hours. She starts a noon to 9 pm shift. I worry about the kids even though they are old enough, her work place is quite a ways from home. Once the weather warms up Will will be working 10 hour days so not always close by either.

"Gma," how big are the squares for the blanket? You will get it done with time to spare. ;) You are going to be on a first name basis with your delivery men! :lol3: It's so fun to get new things! The dress sounds lovely; you will have to have Jack take your picture in it, and share. I am getting cruise emails from more than one company. I periodically get a brochure in the mail from a cruise line I've never heard of, can't even remember the name off hand.

I need to change clothes so I'm ready to roll. Enjoy the rest of your day!

gma22 03-15-2017 05:59 AM

Good morning to you all. Supposed to be sunny today. I am hoping the Salvation Army guys get here first thing and get the desk off the deck. It was so heavy that we got it out the door onto the deck and I told Jack to just leave it that they could mess with carrying it.

Jack is taking day off to take th computer into the shop. It was fine until we unplugged it to take it off the desk and now the hard drive won't boot up. I sure hope it's nothing serious. I don't need this expense right now.

I just became a great aunt again. My older sister just became a great grandma yesterday morning. Poor thing was in labor from early Monday morning and they finally did a c section. I don't know why they waited so long.

Jean: They definitely all know where my house is. I have a new computer chair being delivered today. The problem is finding what you want in the stores. All the new computer stuff I had shipped because we couldn't find what we wanted in the store. I think it's why retail is doing so poorly because online shopping is so much easier. For me, buying clothing and shoes is just too difficult anymore. I have a lot of trouble getting my right shoe on because I can't bend my leg back very far and I hate the stuff they have in the large sized stores. It's all aimed at young people or totally frumpy and dumpy. I can understand your anxiety with the kids. I worry about Thomas and he is almost 17! lol The squares are 50 stitches by 60 rows and about 7" X 11."

Well gals, better go. Have a great day today.

Jean 03-15-2017 07:27 PM

Good Afternoon! Another cold day (3 degrees early this morning) with no sunshine at all. I spent the morning dusting and vacuumed again. I'm thinking we really need to have our furnace vents cleaned when it gets warmer. This afternoon I went to the gift shop to pay invoices. The gal working in the coffee shop always offers coffee, cookies, etc., which I rarely ever take. Today she was making a strawberry smoothie for an employee. It sounded so good so I had her make one for me. Yum! I didn't think I was tired when I got home, but fell asleep in front of the tv so the rest of the afternoon wasn't productive at all. :o

"Gma," here's hoping your computer was an easy fix. :crossed: I hate it when they don't work, and I' so technology challenged. I see where Gordman's and a Christian supply store are both closing in Sioux City. I think Kohls is in trouble too. The mall parking lot was pretty empty yesterday when we were there. We were in Penneys and I bought two bed pillows, a bathroom rug, and a hand towel for a total of $32 and some odd cents. I "saved" $91 after using mail coupons, JCP credit card, and two $10 coupons from a previous shopping trip which had to be before the cruise. Crazy! I just got a catalog in the mail with some cute outfits, brands I've never heard of so have no clue about sizes. Free shipping for a $50 order which could be just one item. I like free shipping!

Bob just got home and is hinting about food. Guess I need to get a move on -- thinking eggs, toast, and bacon sounds quick and easy! Enjoy your evening!

Jean 03-16-2017 12:32 PM

Good Morning! It is a few degrees warmer and the sun is shining this morning. Yay! I've been to get my nails done and have laundry in both the washer and dryer. I will get the summer clothes caught up eventually. I have Crafty Club this afternoon and also need to make a food list for card club Monday night. I tend to make the same things every year and need to look through recipes to find something different.

The dryer is about done so need to change loads. Hope you enjoy a terrific Thursday!

Jean 03-17-2017 05:16 PM

Good Afternoon! The sun is shining and it's warmer, but terribly windy. I've done some more laundry, made a food list for card club Monday night, and braved the grocery store right after lunch. I try not to go on Fridays but put it off, so it was a toss up for today or tomorrow. I should know better! Will make as much food as possible tomorrow and hit the high spots for dust, then bathrooms on Sunday, and touch ups Monday.

Hope you all are having a good day, and enjoy the rest of it!

gma22 03-17-2017 05:38 PM

Afternoon gals. I was really sick yesterday but felt great today again. We are warming back up to spring temperatures.

Nothing wrong with hard drive. I told Jack to check cables but of course he knew computers so he took it in. It was a bad monitor cable. I don't know why men think they know everything. It cost os $35 to be told there was nothing wrong with it. 😡 We decided to put the downstairs monitor upstairs with Jack's laptop then we bought a bigger screened monitor. The websites have gotten wider and we would have to resize the font to see the whole screen. The new desk will be set up tomorrow as well as the new chair so we will have new, new, new! Lol

Jean: Is your weather improving? I don't remember, does Ian play baseball? Thomas just ran a marathon a week or so ago. I need to text him and make plans for lunch. I am slipping.

Everyone have a great weekend!

Jean 03-18-2017 03:23 PM

Good Afternoon! I just finished the first round of dishes from making egg salad, a banana bread and party mix. I needed refrigerator space for card club food and had a couple "rotten" bananas. Bob grilled steaks for lunch so hopefully supper will be super simple. He just left for the farm to load the junk tractor parts on the trailer to deliver next week. It is sunny here, off and on, today. The wind is blowing so I don't know how warm it feels outside.

"Gma," I had to chuckle at "nothing wrong" with your computer except needing a new cable. I was surprised they didn't charge more to check it out. Enjoy your new desk, chair, and monitor! We are supposed to be in the 50s and 60s for the next few days. It doesn't always seem very warm if the wind is blowing, which it usually is. All of our snow is gone for right now at least. Ian does play baseball. They are looking for a vehicle of some sort for him. He can drive back and forth to school with a special permit. Makes me nervous! Maddy is signed up for the middle school soccer team and went to a camp this morning. Beth said the new soccer fields are ready, but I'm not sure if the school team uses them or just the city teams. I know there are different sized fields or at least there were when we played there before. Kolby hasn't decided if he wants to play this year or not. There are a couple STEM camps he wants to attend so I hope he can do that. With Beth's screwy work schedule, and depending where the camps are, that might pose a problem. We just found out Bob's aunt has agreed to a 100th birthday party in May. Of course, it is the same weekend as a high school graduation on Amanda's side of the family. It is also the same day as Zowie's birthday.

I need to keep moving and decide which food to create next. Hope you are having a super Saturday and doing something fun!

QuilterInVA 03-18-2017 09:46 PM

Good evening, ladies! We've had weather in the 80s and then to the 20s and now back to the 40s. Spring in VA!

I went to a seminar Dr. Baddar (my hand doc) gave on arthritis of the knee and hip on Tuesday evening. Very informative. My knees have been really bad so I made and appointment to see him on Friday. My knees are shot. He asked me why I never mentioned them before. Well, I thought people with bad knees used canes and walkers and such and couldn't exercise. He said my knees are some of the worst he has seen and the fact that I exercise even though they hurt is what kept me going to well. Anyway, I'm having 2 total knee replacements. The first is Wednesday March 29 and the second will be about a month later, depending on my recovery from the first. I'll be in the hospital 1-3 days and then go to rehab for a week or two since I live alone. I'm rushing around getting things ready. I've got to find some bigger pants because they want them to be loose. I don't intend to keep them so I'll go to Walmart or Kmart and get cheap ones. I have to go to the hospital Monday morning to get lab work done and then the hospital nurse will be calling me at 2 that day to get an updated health history. Mary Immaculate is one of the top orthopeodic hospitals and that is where I will be. It used to be a regular hospital but when Bon Secors bought it they made it into just orthopoedics.

Donna, I'll bet the Salvation Army was glad to get the desk. Disabled American Veterans comes around once a month and picks up after mailing us donation bag. I usually have a bag for them. I hat the computer desk I have so I'll be going out on the curb soon. It has a shelf over the monitor for the printer and it is too high for me to see the printer controls when I'm sitting down.

Jean, are you ready for another cruise? I don't care if I never see snow again. For some reason, I didn't think Ian was old enough to drive. Kids grow up so fast. I think I'd go to the 100th birthday party for she may not have any more. We had a big 100th birthday party for my great-aunt who always said she'd live that long. That night she died in her sleep. I guess she met her goal so she was done.

Have a blessed day.

gma22 03-19-2017 12:35 PM

Good morning everyone. It is a lovely day and will be in the 80's the beginning of rhe week.

It has been crazy here the last couple days. Jack started on the chair yesterday and found the bottom holes didn't match up then the same thing with one of the arm holes. On top of that the seat back had a rip in it so we had to haul the thing back to WM and it wouldn't all come apart so it was a lug job. Took forever to return and Jack was pooped when he got home so I didn't get anything done. He started in first thing this morning on the desk and it is great. It is black iron and glass and all one level so will be much easier to clean. It is sort of L shaped and fits in the corner perfectly. My new chair will be here on Wed and hopefully it is perfect. When it comes to stuff that has to be put together, doesn't much matter ordering online or in town.

Susan: I hope your knees come out perfect!!! My old computer had a top shelf that was very hard for me to clean. This new one is great and being glass will be easy to clean.

Jean: Hope card club is fun. The food sounds yummy. When we moved down here the south put olives and a pinch of hot sauce in their egg salad. I got hooked on it. lol Thomas has been driving almost a year now but in this town it makes me nervous. He's had an accident but somebody backed into him. It wasn't his fault. Hope they can find something for him to drive. Thomas's car is a stick shift so that's not a bad thing.

Got lots of work to do so gotta get going.

Jean 03-19-2017 02:13 PM

Good Afternoon! The sun is shining and the wind is blowing. Bob's group sang at the early service this morning, then we went out for breakfast. I have another load of laundry in the washer, peeled then crinkle cut carrots and radishes for card club, and washed fan and entry light shades. Still have a pile of catalogs to go through and the kitchen floor to mop. Cleaning bathrooms will round out the day I think. I made a sweet Chex mix that was supposed to have cranberries added at the end. I think my soda is old even though the date hadn't expired. When I added it to the sauce it didn't foam up like it should have. I thought maybe it would work after baking in the oven, but there wasn't enough sauce so the cereal globbed together. It tastes ok but doesn't look the best with lots of dry cereal. :(

Susan, it's good to see you! I'm sorry about your knees but it's good they can be replaced. Everyone that I know, who had a replacement, has had good luck and say the secret is to faithfully do the exercises. I know you won't have trouble with that part! :cheer: Casper will miss you while you are in rehab. Ian will be 15 in November and that just doesn't seem possible. The years have flown by too fast. We will go to the 100th birthday party for sure. This aunt has lived in independent living for over 20 years. She and her family owned several Hallmark stores and after her husband died she visited each one on a regular basis, driving the miles on her own. She still worked after moving into her retirement apartment; I think she finally retired when she was 78. She delivers mail to the nursing home residents and is in charge of the bingo games. She likes to start by telling a joke, which she looks up on the internet and memorizes. In her spare time she has taught herself to play a keyboard. She has more energy than I do! We were all there for her 99th birthday because she wasn't going to have a party this year! She also had a 95th party. We have pictures from each and it's fun to see how our grandchildren have grown. She only has one grandson who is a doctor somewhere back east and could never come to the parties. Her granddaughter lives in Washington, D. C., and does come as do Bob's two cousins. Aunt Row is a marvel! She quit sending Christmas cards several years ago, but calls each of her nieces and nephews to catch up on their families.

"Gma," that is too bad about the computer chair! I'm sure Jack was not a happy camper. Here's hoping the next one is as it should be. When you say hot sauce are you referring to Tobasco Sauce? I have used that in a couple of recipes, it is hot! Way back when we took driver's ed. in a stick shift car. Over the years my dad had a couple of floor stick shift sports cars, and then he bought a car for me that had the shift on the column. Kids today, unless they drive farm tractors, have no clue about shifting. Bob asked Ian about his driver's ed. car, and it was an automatic SUV no less.

Dancing with the Stars starts tomorrow night. At least I recognize a few of the stars this time. Break time is over and I need to keep moving. Hope you all are enjoying a super Sunday!

gma22 03-20-2017 07:13 AM

Good morning to you all. It is going to be gorgeous today, 83!

I am going to do the dusting this morning as soon as Jack leaves as there is just a couple things. I did the wash down dusting yesterday as we have a lot of glass and stuff that needs washing instead of dusting. I will finish the house later today. I got a lot of it done yesterday while Jack finished putting together the table. What a mess that was. Tiny dots of Styrofoam everywhere and static would keep them from being vacuumed up. Took forever to clean that up off the rug. I then ran my new floor sweeper thingy on the floors and mopped them.

I am going out around 9 to get my nails done and run by the post office. We got a piece of mail for a Rhonda somebody with our address on it and it was from the county jail!!! I wrote return to sender on it and on the back said no one by that name had ever lived here and we have lived here 15 years and our name was Wilkinson. So, I will run that by the post office and drop it in the box.

I bought tickets yesterday to a Memorial Day weekend Redbirds game here in town. They will be playing the Iowa Cubs that day. We get Redbird Club tickets, which are $55 each, but they have an all you can eat and drink buffet from an hour before the game until like the 8th inning. We figure if we bought tickets where we used to sit and then had stuff to eat and drink we would pay about the same amount with concession prices. They have hot dogs and nachos and popcorn and ice cream and concession stuff up in the clubhouse. It is also enclosed in glass so you don't have to sit out in the heat, but you also get designated outdoor seats, which we don't ever sit in. It is a great view and I can just ride my scooter right into the clubhouse and watch the whole game on my scooter at the window. They also have a bar if you want stuff other than the free beer or soda and where the bar is has huge sliding doors with those highchair level seats you can sit and watch the game from. It is all around a nice, nice place. The Cubs have some great prospects at triple A this year so it should be an interesting game.

Jean: Bob's aunt sounds like one cool old lady. I love to see stories where the high numbered elderly are still involved in a lot of stuff and their life is very full. I know if I was in a living center I would want to be involved in all I could. It is too bad her grandson can't make it out to her birthday parties though. Hope your Chex mix goes ok even if it doesn't look so great. I have never heard sweet Chex made with soda. What is in it? Yes, they put in probably Tabasco sauce, but it is only a couple drops I think. I don't care about the spicy part, but I love olives in my egg salad. Another thing I love olives in is cream cheese for bagels. There used to be a place here in town where you could buy a container but it went out of business a long time ago. Tom and Kelly bought Tom a used car several years ago from Car Max to drive back and forth to work and when Tom bought the Porsche he gave Thomas his old car and it is a standard transmission. I am glad he knows how to drive one. It is useful knowledge even if he never has the situation to use it other than his little car. I have got to text him and find out if he would like to go out to lunch on Good Friday because I think he is off school and Jack is off work. It won't be long so I need to get Easter cards for both boys.

Everyone have a great week this week. I have my yearly dr appointment on Wednesday. I hope it doesn't take all morning as I can't eat so I can do my blood work. I guess I will take a package of peanut butter crackers or whatever to eat right away when it is done so my blood sugar doesn't drop.

Jean 03-20-2017 03:20 PM

Good Afternoon! The sun is shining and it feels warmer in spite of the wind blowing. We didn't balance at church this morning, $100 off, so had to double check all the checks until we found it. The other gal handled that check and didn't make a record envelope for me to post from. I think we must have been visiting while opening envelopes. The bank list was right this week so had an extra list of names to enter for a $11,000+ deposit which we needed. Stopped to pick up gift shop money that is still in the car and I will count later, maybe, or tomorrow. I work in the gift shop Wednesday morning so can write invoice checks then. Had a few things left to get ready for card club tonight and think I'm ready except for changing clothes.

"Gma," sounds like lovely weather for you! I'm just sure we will see snow one more time but know it won't last long. It would be interesting to find out Rhonda's history! I know you will enjoy the game although I must admit I have never heard of the Redbirds. :o We have several church couples who travel to Florida and Arizona to watch the spring training games. Our pastor is a HUGE Cubs fan and they are going to Las Vegas to watch them this weekend. He was so excited at church yesterday. I feel sorry for him in a way; we no longer have an associate pastor so he gets a lot of the extra work dumped on him. He is Type A, and not a good designator which doesn't help either. I'm not going to have the Chex mix tonight, there is too much that doesn't have the glaze on it. The birds will get what's left after Bob finishes picking out the good parts. The sauce was just brown sugar, butter, and light corn syrup, then 1/4 tsp. of soda after it had come to a boil. Good luck with the doctor's appointment. I hate the yearly one!

Hope you all are enjoying a marvelous Monday!

gma22 03-20-2017 09:28 PM

Good evening! I may not get in here tomorrow. I have a lot of stuff to get done and my friend is calling and we talk a long time. I may be cleaning and talking to her at the same time. We have had to postpone 3 weeks in a row and she wants to fill me in on all of the stuff going on with Bob's pension. It is a big mess I guess and she could use the money if they ever get it figured out.

They decided to have some kind of service for my brother at a veteran's cemetary the end of the month, but we just won't be able to go. At this last point Jack can't use his bereavement anymore and he doesn't have the extra time off. Don't know why they waited so long and then did it last minute. Once again it was my cousin that let the three of us know not his family. Ahh well.

One of the condo buildings caught fire and at least two of them were pretty much destroyed. There were probably more that were damaged as flames were shooting out of the top of two condos and there was rolling black smoke. At least the lady whose home it was didn't lose her dog. Awful awful thing for them so if you would just say a prayer for them.

Jean: Wow that could have taken awhile to find I guess. Always stressful when the money doesn't come up even. Just like the Iowa Cubs are the triple A team for the Chicago Cubs, the Memphis Redbirds are the triple A team for the St Louis Cardinals. My sister and bil keep wanting us to come to AZ during spring training as they live in Mesa. Maybe one day we will get to. Your birdies are going to love getting the Chex mix!

Everyone have a good day tomorrow.

Jean 03-21-2017 12:35 PM

Good Morning! It has turned colder again :( but so far no rain nor snow. It was really dark and gloomy earlier but it is lightening up as the sun is trying to peek through the clouds. I am home all day today, and tired! Bob talked me into new bed pillows and I've decided I don't like mine! Last night I wasn't ready to go to bed even though the clock said it was time. I feel like I tossed 'n turned all night, finally switched pillows in the middle of the night. I should have washed my extra serving dishes from cards, but put the extra food away and called it good. The dishes are washed and put away now plus two loads of laundry washed and dried this morning. Tomorrow is my morning to work in the gift shop, a perm in the afternoon, and then bell choir practice. Bob has a meeting two hours away and will have to leave by 6 in the morning, a long day for both of us!

"Gma," you are good if you can clean and talk on the phone at the same time! ;) It's nice there will be a service for your brother and I know you will be there in thought. How scary about the condo fire! It would be interesting to find out if it was due to resident carelessness, faulty wiring, etc. I'm glad about the lady and her dog. Bob is still picking through the Chex mix and isn't sharing yet.

I should be thinking about something for lunch. I don't think leftover card club snacks will fill the bill. Hope you enjoy a terrific Tuesday!

gma22 03-22-2017 07:10 AM

Good morning to you all. It is pouring down rain this morning so I guess I better dig out the umbrella out of the trunk today.

I have a doctor's appointment first thing this morning. I hope I am not in there for hours. I just need to get drug refills and get my blood work done. I just hope I can get in on time and out.

I have almost one color done on the blanket squares. I will finish the last one today then start on the next color tomorrow.

Well, my girlfriend did not heed my warning and that lady and her adult daughter are moving in with her at the end of the month. I hope this doesn't go all to heck for her. She still hasn't gotten his pension mess straightened out nor her health insurance and she cannot afford to put up with dead beats. The woman's daughter has a drinking problem besides. I can see this not turning out well, but she is an adult and I can't make the decision for her. She has a good heart and it is going to get her into trouble. She told me yesterday the woman is the same as she always was and they will be fine. I sure do hope so.

Jean: I can sympathize with you. I am pooped because I kept waking up with leg cramps. The heat here yesterday made my ankles and such swell and it caused leg cramps last night. I kept waking up trying to arrange my leg and foot so the cramp would go away. The birds may get gyped if Bob decides to eat most of it! Looks like you will be busy today.

Everyone have a good day.

Jean 03-22-2017 09:48 PM

Good Evening! It's been another cloudy, cold, and windy day in my corner of the world. We were up early so Bob could get an early start for his meeting. I sold several things in the gift shop this morning, mainly $90 purses to two nurses. One of the buyers came in and put together several arrangements, my job was to keep track of the piece prices for a total price. One was $120, one $97, and a smaller one for $65. We have sold total arrangements while others get picked apart and sold separately. This afternoon I spent three hours getting a perm. and then a half hour at bell practice. Bob offered to fix supper so we ate at a local restaurant.

"Gma," hope your doctor appointment was quick and you got to park close to the door. Sorry about the rain! It was supposed to rain here yesterday, today, tomorrow, and Friday but so far nothing. I agree with you on your friend letting the other two move in with her. Big time trouble in my book. Do you sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees? I had a physical therapist tell me to do that many years ago. I think it helps but I still get foot or leg cramps once in awhile. One of the gals at card club said she drinks a couple big glasses of water in the evening and quit getting leg cramps. She admitted she gets up several times to go to the bathroom so guess it is a toss up. I slept much better last night with my old pillow!

I am tired and thinking bed is sounding pretty inviting in a short while. Hope you have a terrific Thursday tomorrow!

gma22 03-23-2017 09:00 AM

Good morning ladies. It is overcast today and cool but supposed to warm up into the 70's by this afternoon.

Dr appointment went fine. They have actually streamlined it because it is being run by someone else even though it is still part of University of Tennessee. They put in new computer equipment and software so they can run credit cards right there at the monitors and everything is computerized so you aren't carrying paperwork all over the place like to have labs or to checkout. He changed some of my meds and added some. He is such a darling. Even though I have good cholesterol he wanted me on a statin. He did ask not tell me and explained why then said, "If you were my mother I would want you to take it." I like him very much and am going to miss him once he finishes his residency if he doesn't come back to the clinic. He seems to be a bit older than most of the residents, had long hair he wears in a man bun on the back of his neck and has a beard. He is about mid 30's to late 30's I think. He is scheduling me for a colonoscopy so am looking forward to that......:^::^:

My monitor is wonderful. I can now see full website pages without having to reduce the size of the font to get the whole page in. It's pretty big, but I don't even have to wear my reading glasses to use it.

I have my last pair of sandals and a dress coming today. I really hope I like the dress as it looks really cute. It has pintucks across the front and fake buttons all the way down the front. It will be for a non formal night for dinner with the blue sandals I bought.

I finally was able to book the parking for the cruise so now if the ship website would ever let me book the Jamie Oliver restaurant I would have everything done. I noticed the hotel in Florida said they were having a sale so I thought I'd take a look to see if I could get a better price. It is an Embassy Suites and we have stayed there every time we sail out of Fort Lauderdale. They have this spectacular pool with waterfalls and rocks and such and has a deep end, which is great. It is huge too. Anyway, I got an AARP price when I booked a few months ago of $155 a night, which is pretty great for that hotel. The price now with their sale is $183! I think I will keep it the way it is. All the other hotels are booked and paid for in advance, but this hotel doesn't offer that.

I finished the one color and am starting on the second color of the blanket today. I watched the two "Nanny McPhee" movies and finished the last one of the bright green watching them.

I need to make a grocery list and menu since it will be commissary weekend and get the downstairs bathroom and kitchen cleaned today. I am still having some leg cramps so hope moving around a lot will help with that. I did talk to the doctor about the edema and he did a test on my feet to make sure I am still ok with circulation because of my diabetes and I am.

Jean: I can't sleep on my side because of my surgeries. I have to sleep on my back. I use folded up blankets and or pillows to put under my one knee and am trying to get them both elevated but sometimes I don't get it exactly right I guess and it causes cramping. I am out of bananas and I try to eat one of those everyday for the potassium. I will have to check my labs when they come back to see where my potassium level is at. I try not to drink after 6 pm or so for that very reason, but I guess like you said it is either leg cramps that wake you up or having to go that wakes you up.

Everyone have a great day today.

Jean 03-23-2017 06:03 PM

Good Afternoon! The sky has gotten very dark and enough rain drops have fallen to make the street wet. I made a WM run this morning and had the BEST experience EVER! I had 13 items so headed to the "20 and under" checkout register. A gal and a man beat me to it and she was pushing a cart full of groceries. A man without a cart was paying for his purchase, then the next guy in line had just a few things. Just as I was eyeing the cart full of groceries a WM employee (we always have one going between the registers and customer service area policing) walked up to the couple, pointed to the sign, and motioned them down the line to another checkout. The man went along but the woman stayed in my line with her cart. The guy motioned her to follow him and finally she jerked the cart hard enough I thought it would tip over when she turned around. She was really mad. There were two more people behind me watching her too, both having no cart. I looked for the employee to thank her after I went through but didn't see her. I did notice the couple was still waiting in line. :cheer: Made my day to say the least! Other than that, nothing exciting going on here today.

"Gma," I hope your new meds will be ok and do what the doctor wants them to do. We have several wanting to retire but the clinics are having a hard time to find new doctors willing to come here for some "unknown" reason. The hospital just put in a computer translating system because of all the different languages spoken, 27 at last count. :dizzy: Somehow it connects with a live person somewhere who can translate for the patient and hospital staff. I think you got a good deal on your hotel price. We stayed at the Ramada for $190. It is in the process of being remodeled; the best thing was a built in night light on the hair dryer! I must say they were very efficient at picking us up at the airport, getting us to the ship when we were supposed to be there, and lined up their van to take us to the airport after the cruise. I bet if no ships were coming or going the prices wouldn't be quite so high. I try to eat bananas but I don't like them soft so only buy a couple at a time.

Bob will be home soon so I need to dream up something for supper. I taped Dancing with the Stars so want to watch that before the evening gets too far gone. Hope you enjoy a fantastic Friday!

gma22 03-24-2017 05:52 AM

Good morning to you all. For once I had a good night's sleep, got up at 4 to go to the bathroom so decided to just stay up and get the day started. The weather yesterday was beautiful and warm.

I finished up the downstairs housework I wanted to get done but am not going to start upstairs again until Monday. I want to make some headway on the blanket today and I need to do a menu and a grocery list for shopping this weekend.

I am making chili for dinner and Jack will make himself a couple grilled cheese to go with it. I like just having the chili, but he says it isn't filling enough. He is going to put my chair together tonight so I wanted an easy and fast dinner and cleanup.

I received my dress yesterday and Jack really liked it so am keeping it. It is very comfortable that's for sure though it is pretty long. I wanted what they still call a maxi dress for dinner but don't want it dragging the floor. I need to launder it then see how it goes. The blue sandals I bought will go perfectly with it.

Jean: Astonishing! I have never seen a WM employee force someone to move to another checkout when they have too many for the express. I finally got a little myself. The dress was delivered FedEx and I heard him knock and then heard the gate shut so went out to get it. About that time I heard the postal truck pull up so I waited for him to bring my shoes. He never came in and I heard him pull away so I came in and looked at my Ipad and sure enough he pulled that stunt about saying he couldn't deliver. I walked out to get the mail perfectly fine as the gate was unlocked and I knew it was because of the FedEx guy, found a postal note saying he couldn't deliver. I was furious. I called immediately and told the woman I wanted my package. She took my address and said hold on she was going to call the driver. She actually got him and I could hear the conversation. She asked him if he had a package that was supposed to be delivered to my address, he said something then she said does it have to be signed for and he said something and she said the homeowner is home and on the phone right now so why didn't you try delivering? He said something else and back and forth. She read him the riot act and told him to come back and deliver it and from now on deliver the packages. She told me he gets an attitude and I told her straight out that if he was too lazy to get out and walk a few feet to the gate he shouldn't be a postman and besides, he doesn't even have a walking route, he drives his whole route. He didn't come back here until 5:30 even though he couldn't have been very far away in the complex. He banged on the door and went out and slammed the gate. At least for once I heard her reprimand him, but you know what they say about government employees they can't be fired so I imagine nothing will be done. Jack got into a shouting match with him one time when Jack was standing waiting for a package and the guy drove right by him. Jack walked to the next condo and told him to come back and deliver our package and the guy got snotty. It is a relief driver I think unless they changed drivers permanently because we used to have an older guy who was really nice. Yes, we have stayed at several hotels where there is a nightlight in the hairdryer stand. I always take one just in case though.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Jean 03-24-2017 03:18 PM

Good Afternoon! It's another damp cold day in my neighborhood. We've had way too many days like this! This morning was my once a month coffee date; it's always nice to catch up with my friend. This afternoon I am waiting for a load of wash to finish and then need to pick up a few things at the grocery store. I hate going on Friday but it is either today or tomorrow morning so a toss up.

"Gma," Today is definitely a soup kind of day here. :T We just finished our leftover chili. What an onery mailman! Since you called and caught him in the act I hope he gets more than a chewing out from the supervisor! It's the same old story, no pride nor work ethic in the work place/job. :( It's good you got your shoes and dress! :cp: I always take a night light along too, even though there is usually enough light leaking in through drapes or around the hall door.

The washer should be done so I'm off to the store. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

gma22 03-26-2017 06:46 AM

Good morning to you all. I got up at 4 to go to the bathroom and couldn't go back to sleep so decided to just get up. We have commissary day today anyway so will have to get up and get around soon.

We sat and watched part of the "Godfather" movies yesterday. We got through the first one and about 3 hours of the second one then decided to just go to bed. It was one of the first movies Jack and I ever went to when we were dating so it is kind of nostalgic.

It rained here off and on all day yesterday and of course it would stop in the car, but the minute you got out to go into a store it would start pouring. I got all the in town shopping done and I sure hope the commissary will be a quick thing.

Looked like some of my blood values are out of whack so am hoping the med changes will help with that. My sodium is down though, which is good.

Jean: The lady you go to coffee with once a month is she someone you have known a long time or taught with or something. I wish I could do things like that with my friend, but kind of hard considering she lives 600 miles away. I do wonder what impact that woman and her daughter is going to have on our friendship and what I mean about that is I sure hope the two of them don't expect us to take them with us when we do something with Vicki. We aren't planning on any trips to Indiana, but if those two are still there I just hope they don't think they will be included as they won't. I am not friends with her and she is a boarder and nothing else. I hope by the time we are able to go back up there she has moved out, but my gut says she is a moocher.

Everyone have a great day today and hope it is warm and sunny where you are!

Jean 03-26-2017 08:11 PM

Good Evening! It's been another damp, cloudy, cold, icky weather day here. Bob was asked to usher for another guy so went to early church. The pastor, organist, liturgist, and sound booth guy were all gone today so had lots of subs filling in for them. We went out for breakfast and have had basketball tournaments on tv all afternoon. I've done a couple loads of laundry and picked up the kitchen clutter.

"Gma," I remember going to see the first Godfather movie! Our neighbors in Ohio talked us into going, and I didn't like the movie at all. We didn't have much money back then and had to pay a sitter, a meal, and movie tickets so I could see the $$ signs going down the drain. ;) I am a "boy gets girl, happy ever after" movie fan. Needless to say we've never gone to any of the sequels. My coffee date friend was a teacher's aide when I first started subbing in the '80s. She has a son, Jason, who is a couple years older than our Jason, and another son a year older than Beth. Marcella finally was hired as a math teacher for the lower level math students when they added three semester algebra and geometry classes. Her Jason and my Jason worked for the school district during the summer, doing the mowing and whatever odd jobs assigned, and became good friends. Meanwhile, when Jason and Amanda got married, the other Jason was an usher in the wedding, and Amanda had a college friend who came to the wedding. The two friends met at the reception and eventually married with Jason and Amanda both in the wedding. I spent three years (muddling) in Marcella's algebra classes with the special ed. kids I worked with who were mainstreamed into regular math classes. Her Jason and wife have two children a couple years younger than Ian and Zowie, but now are divorced. Marcella's husband had dementia and bladder cancer so spent the last couple years of his life in a nursing home. She is on the school board so it has been interesting to hear both sides of running the school district. We are both so glad to be retired! Aren't you glad you asked?! I hope your friend put a deadline on the moochers moving out; once in I think it will be hard to get rid of them. How was the commissary today?

It's past supper time, so says my stomach! I'm thinking popcorn is fast and easy. Hope you enjoy a marvelous Monday tomorrow!

gma22 03-27-2017 07:32 AM

Good morning to you all. We are supposed to get thunderstorms again today, which is a bummer. I want some nice days so I can go and get my dirty car washed and vacuumed out.

We got the commissary shopping done and I only had one thing I couldn't find, which was horseradish. We looked in produce where they have the jar garlic, in the area where they have pickles and such and in the area where they have sauces, condiments that sort of thing. I always looked in the foreign food area. I didn't know where else to look so I gave up. There was no one around to ask about it either.

I am going to sit and clean veggies and such today and bag them and when Jack gets home he can vacuum seal them. I am hoping they will last longer that way and I can go ahead and portion them.

The couple pictures I saw of my great niece's wedding were lovely. She had a beautiful wedding gown and had her hair up with a veil. She and her boyfriend had been living together for years so no excitement to newness I would say.

Jean: Ok, I got it! It is sad the way her poor husband passed though. We did breakfast at Cracker Barrel yesterday and the stupid hostess tried to make me walk clear to the back of the restaurant even though there were tables in the front section. Jack got mad and refused to go back there and the little brat pitched a fit and walked back to the hostess stand with our menus and silverware just leaving us standing there! One of the servers cleaned a table for us and let us sit down. Our server came up to take our order and Jack said we had no menus or silverware and got up to go get them. When he got there she then whined she was
"waiting for the table to be cleaned" and still didn't give us anything. Jack was steaming by this time and the same guy that cleared our table brought us what we needed and he wasn't even our server. Jack told the manager what happened and the guy was very nice and said he would definitely have a talk with his servers about seating handicapped people upfront always. I told him it would have been different if there were no table closer to the front, but there were 4 tables that hadn't been bussed and we could have sat at any of them as they obviously had servers attached to them or there wouldn't have been dishes on them. I told him we were not unreasonable, but she could have helped us out and she chose not to. She was young, probably high school age and boy did she have an attitude. She ignored us when we walked in the first place because she was visiting with someone she knew. She then said, "Just a second," and walked into the dining room to see where there was empty seating! She could just as easily asked us to wait a second and she would get a table cleared. Jack said to me that I have a hot pink cane and anyone can see I walk with a cane. I told him from now on we will go to the other one if he likes.

Well I guess I should get the day started. Hope everyone has a good week this week.

Jean 03-27-2017 06:35 PM

Good Afternoon! Another gloomy day in my neighborhood; the sun came out twice for about 30 seconds each time. The weatherman lied again, said we would have warmer and sunshine this afternoon. Church counting balanced on the first try but I couldn't get into the computer I normally use. I swear the gremlins screw it up every week lately. I was able to use the office manager's computer and was done by the time she came to work. The gift shop money didn't take long either except I had some checks to write so made a trip back there after I made the bank deposit. I've done a couple loads of laundry, folded towels, and put them away. Bob is at a board meeting so hope he gets fed because I'm not cooking tonight. I was browning hamburger for tacos this noon (his request last night) when he called and said he'd been invited out for lunch with a couple farmer friends. Lunch for tomorrow!

"Gma," hard to believe this is the last week in March. Were you looking for fresh garlic bulbs? Here garlic is in the deli refrigerated section with things the store deli makes. I've rarely bought the little jars, I use powdered, because I never use very much. We usually ask for a booth, in a restaurant, if we see any are vacant. I'd say that little gal needs an attitude adjustment big time! Have you ever ordered anything from Zulily? I see their ad popping up more often and it's on your post today. I did see the FB wedding picture, a very pretty bride and a gorgeous dress!

Susan, good luck with your knee surgery!

I am boiling eggs for egg salad and they should be done. Hope you enjoy a nice evening!

gma22 03-28-2017 07:44 AM

Good morning to you all. Looks like possibly more rain for us. It is warming into spring temps consistently though it is still cool early mornings.

We had a young woman that was 5 months pregnant killed in a car accident recently and it was so sad. I am not sure why she lost control of her car unless she was going to fast on the off ramp or did a stupid like others do and wait until the last second as she hit the concrete thing and flipped. The poor man that tried to save her took it pretty hard.

I have a big toe I have been messing with that has fungus. I have been treating it for a long time and half of the nail came off so I am trying to get the other half to thin out using medication. I don't want to have a funky nail for summer nor do I want to have to wear a bandaid over it because I can't paint it. It is a pain.

We have made reservations for Easter lunch this year. I actually made two at two different places but when the one wouldn't give me the time I wanted, I canceled it and we are going to the other one. It will be just Jack and me. I have a new dress I am going to wear with my new sandals and a little white short sleeved sweater.

Susan: Praying your knee surgery is a success and you have very little discomfort!

Jean: Jack had crab cakes and I have cold shrimp and broccoli for dinner last night. We are having pork chops tonight and Jack is having mashed potato and asparagus but I am having just the asparagus and maybe some fruit. Glad you got the church stuff done in one round and didn't have to go hunting. You misunderstood. I was looking for bottled horseradish in the section where the bottled garlic is in the store. I couldn't find horseradish anywhere. I know you can buy it. It was for a lunch recipe but I just substituted brown mustard instead. One thing that gripes me is I am having an awful time finding Snapple Diet Iced Tea. The doctor wants me to cut down on diet soda, which is fine, but I want something else to replace it besides water. I have bee to three different brands of stores and only found diet peach and had to buy a big box not a single. I have been wanting to try different flavors before I commit to something. I am stuck with peach I guess. They don't really have even regular Snapple around here for some reason.

Well girls, I guess I should go and get another knitting square started. It is coming along.

Jean 03-28-2017 12:44 PM

Good Morning! The sun is shining and no wind is blowing! Our normally quiet neighborhood has some activity going on. The house across the street was purchased by more than one family, none of who live there on a permanent basis. It is their weekend get away during the summer months. Yesterday a dumpster was in their driveway plus two pickups. In the afternoon here comes another pickup pulling a long trailer, and parked in front of our house blocking our mailbox. Our big, tough and rough looking mailman let the construction guys have it in rather colorful language! Bob heard as he was on his way out to get the mail so the mailman wouldn't have to get out of his car. This morning Bob parked my car in front of our house and the trailer is now across the street blocking another neighbor's mailbox. Neighbor on the other side is gone so they could park in front of their house. We have a neighbor at the end of the street who drives a pickup and she drives like a bat out of he**. With the trailer on our side it blocks the view backing out of driveways; it does on the other side too, but "oh well." I'm working on clothes sorting today!

"Gma," how sad about the young pregnant woman. Having a car accident has become a worry, for me, when we travel the interstate. SD raised their speed limit to 80 and cars pass us all the time. Their traffic fatalities have increased, so dumb! Iowa is going to legalize fireworks but you can still talk and text on cell phones. Stupid! I swear politicians voting have no common sense any more! Have you tried Vicks on your toe? I have seen that tip more than once. We don't drink much pop but when we do, it's not diet. Bob likes a raspberry tea (I think) but not sure of the brand. I tried it but thought it was terribly sweet. I personally don't mind diet but Bob thinks they are trying to poison him. Your Easter lunch will be delicious I'm sure. I think we are doing Easter at Jason's on Saturday. Beth and family are going to the other side on Sunday. Beth would like to go to church; her church is huge and in years past have moved the service to the auditorium in town. No one in that family goes to church so she probably won't either since they are having a brunch. Bob is singing so I offered to have it here it am glad to go too.

I need to get lunch cleaned up and put away -- tacos from yesterday! :D Hope you enjoy a terrific Tuesday!

gma22 03-29-2017 07:34 AM

Good morning to you all. We are supposed to hit in the 80's today with lots of sunshine. That would be very nice.

Jack took my garage door opener because he has repaired his a bunch of times and it has now gone to the big garage in the sky. I ordered two online with faster delivery and hope they get here soon and more importantly that they work properly. I found a place in Cleveland that sells them a lot cheaper than buying them on Amazon by about half.

I sat and paid some bills this morning and am going to do my darndest to clean that bathroom upstairs. It desperately needs it. I need to put away the electric blanket and some clothes that Jack took upstairs last night too.

My new attempt at eating healthier is wreaking havoc with my colon and I was in the bathroom yesterday more than I was out, but I want to get my diabetes number in a better place and my liver enzymes too. I just hope over a few days it will settle down because it is rough going the other way.

Jean: Doesn't much matter what the speed limit is around here as the folks drive about 85 on the interstate and on 240 around the city. Jack tries to drive the speed limit, but they make it more dangerous to do so. He was driving 70 the other day and people were zooming past him. I told him he wouldn't get a ticket as long as everyone else was going faster than he was. Our speed limit bounces back and forth between 55 and 65 depending where you are in the city with regards to the interstate. People here just drive plain nuts. I found diet raspberry online but they wanted $56 for a box of 6 and that's ridiculous. I will just drink the peach. I have tea in the fridge for Jack made up, but he drinks big tall glasses with dinner every night and if I drank it too I would be making tea everyday and I am not about to do that as it is a pain IMO. Do you buy Easter outfits for the grandkids? They may be getting too old for that though. I am just giving the boys money.

Everyone have a good day. Going to sit and knit for awhile then make my breakfast. Oatmeal on the agenda today with blueberries.

Jean 03-29-2017 08:14 PM

Good Afternoon! It has been raining almost continuously today, damp and cold feeling in the house so I cranked the furnace up another notch. I went to get my nails done this morning then did a couple errands. This afternoon I had an eye appointment. It's not time for my yearly checkup but I have been having trouble with one eye being blurry when I try to read signs and see sparkles around headlights. Not sure what is going on but a different prescription from the last time in one eye. I have a cataract starting but the lens has some irritation which could also be the problem. Have to wear my Coke bottle glasses for a week and go back for a recheck. I don't have time to mess with this but need to see! I've never has my eyes dilated before. The doctor gave me me a paper sunglasses as I was leaving, I reminded him it was raining.

"Gma," I always thought you ate pretty healthy because of the diabetes. What are you doing differently, or what do you need to change? I know I eat too many carbs but try to watch it from day to day if I really go over. Bob's ice tea is Pure Leaf brand. I have seen it in the grocery store but he usually buys it at the gas station store. Speaking of which, I just visited with a gal who had been to California on vacation. She said the drink there is Pepsi and it's hard to find Coke products. We are having trouble finding 7Up in restaurants or quick stops around here, it is Sprite or nothing. When you make ice tea do you boil water and use tea bags? That is the way my mom and grandma made it, sometimes I do too. I did go to bell practice and marked the name of the notes BIG so I could see them.

I need to clear off the counter before I sit down for the evening. Enjoy a wonderful Wednesday evening!
