Lent challenge

Hello all. They say it takes 21 days to change a habit. I am going to take that a step further. Even though I am not Catholic, I am going to use this season to try and cleanse myself of 2 of my bigger issues. I am going to give up candy and soda for Lent. In hopes, of course, that I won't pick them up again. And still take steps to clean up other unhealthy habits.

Anyone else want in? Just post here. Check in for support, brainstorming, butt kicking, compulsive use of emoticons (once I have my list again :D), and random neural firings!!

Good luck to all on their journey to good health!

4myloves 02-22-2012 09:30 AM

Yes, I will join you. My Catholic friend is giving up meat. I am giving up bread & sweets (I guess I can throw diet sodas in there, too-----only water for me!).

jollygirl 02-23-2012 08:05 AM

Glad to have you. Anyone else is welcome any time :) Here's to day two. I want to stick with this and make permanent healthy changes. Woo hoo.

PghGal 02-23-2012 08:08 AM

I'll be giving up pizza and pepsi! I've been doing fairly well losing weight recently, and the main food culprit for preventing a faster loss has been my pizza habit (once a week).

No more until after Easter! Will be interesting to see if my weight loss starts to move more quickly.

Also I guess I'll have to specify that instead of pizza, I will opt for a healthier alternative, not a plate of fettuccine alfredo. ;)

jollygirl 02-23-2012 09:03 AM

I like the clarification! I too have a tendency to substitute one unhealthy food for another! Good luck.

Working partial 3rd shifts tonight and tomorrow night. This is when my challenge becomes...challenging. I really want sugar right now. My mind starts thinking of non candy sugar group food porn which would satisfy. Guess God really does watch out for little children and thee foolish. We had a winter storm, and I didn't have time to stop and get anything, since everyone forgot how to drive in snow!!!

How's everyone doing on their challenges?

jollygirl 02-25-2012 02:26 AM

Hello all. Well, avoided my target foods again tonight. Did have some food porn. Made me feel yucky, and threw a bunch of it out. Since I seem to be in the 3rd shift pick up/lack of sleep thing for the long haul, any suggestions on foods that help energize but don't leave feelings of uck???

Hope your challenges are going well

Good morning all. How is the Lent challenge going? I have been doing well overall. Soda is turning out to be the easiest. Though I was really craving some while out for brunch yesterday. Candy . . . I have not had any, but have done a little substituting. Will keep plugging away at the healthy lifestyle!

Have a good day all

dstalksalot 02-27-2012 07:27 AM

Keep it up guys!

jollygirl 02-27-2012 04:42 PM

FORTY DAYS!!! :fr: lol

PaintedButterfly 02-29-2012 04:21 PM

I'm a bit late but have decided today to give up chocolate (all forms- white, dark, milk, chocolate coated, things with chocolate chips in and hot chocolate!) for lent. Chocolate is my big downfall atm and leads to binges in the evenings so there we go :)

jollygirl 02-29-2012 08:03 PM

Welcome. Doesn't matter when you start, as long as you get going in the right direction.

I am actually going to add a few things to my challenge. I realized I don't want to take baby steps this time around, so am going to throw in a few more healthy steps, and (sorry Nike) JUST DO IT!

Keep up the good work all.

jollygirl 03-02-2012 07:56 AM

OK. So, as of this moment, now, today - these are the things I am adding in to my Lent challenge, to establish healthier habits:

1) daily exercise. OK. I am a slacker
2) Get daily serving of fruit/veg
3) No deep fried or fast foods

Hope everyone else is doing ok. No, I hope you are doing GREAT :cheer: Moment by moment, day by day, create the healthy happier you!

InControl2Day 03-02-2012 08:07 AM

I've given up red meat this lent!

Good luck everyone.

jollygirl 03-03-2012 02:04 AM

So. How is everyone doing on their challenges? I am doing surprisingly well, though 30 some days to go. I find my taste buds are already resetting, and I want things less sweet. And smaller portions as well. As Martha says, it's a good thing!

Good luck all, and keep up the effort

jollygirl 03-06-2012 05:39 PM

Almost down to less than a month to go. How is everyone doing???

lilsquirrel 03-08-2012 09:23 AM

Hi ^_^ I'd like to join in for some accountability.

Crisps are my weakspot. They're like a trigger food for me. I've successfully managed to cut them out of my diet for lent. Since I stopped buying them, I've not been snacking as much either :D

24 days to go!

jollygirl 03-09-2012 10:31 AM

Welcome lilsquirrel. I was in Scotland last summer, and quite surprised at the types of crisps you have we don't! Good luck on your challenge.

I have been doing very well on the original challenges I started. Not so well on the ones I have added in. And oh can I tell. My body feels very yucky, noshing on all that crud :( Well, today is a new day.

Have a good one all!

jollygirl 03-13-2012 09:35 AM

Good morning all! 25 more days to go on our challenge. How are you all doing? Are you finding it easier to make healthy choices?

Hang in there, and live healthy!

jollygirl 03-19-2012 10:45 AM

Well, I must confess a slip up. Was out for dinner Saturday night. I was tired from working an overnight, had a killer headache, and I WANTED A SODA!! I gave in to the craving.

Luckily, I haven't wanted one since.

But boy could I use help in other areas. I need some trash talk to get back on track with eating healthy and working out hard. I want to be healthy to run my dogs, yet I am letting my frustration with foot recovery keep me from doing ANYTHING. And I want to reduce the meds I take, yet am eating so poorly my acid reflux is out of control. :(

Help!!!

jollygirl 03-24-2012 01:32 PM

Still doing fine on the candy challenge. Only having rare cravings, usually when I see a particular Easter favorite.

I did have another soda, however. I went to the gym before having any caffeine, and by the time I got done, the headache was massive.

Note to self: 1) Start using decaf coffee, and saving the full caffeine for really tired school day or working 3rd shifts. 2) Until I have done 1, make sure to have a little coffee before going to the gym :(

Hope everyone is doing well. Talk to you soon

Elliemar 03-24-2012 01:36 PM

I gave up alcohol at home for Lent. Might sound mad but the glass or two of wine in the evenings was a bit of a habit, used up far too many of my syns (doing Slimming World) and often ended up with a munchie attack too. I've surprised myself by not cracking once so far and not missing it either. Yay.

jollygirl 04-02-2012 01:06 AM

Great job, Elliemar.

I have to admit to not doing as well. I have had to cover a lot of 3rd shifts at work, on top of my day hours, school, and dog training. I have had soda every weekend, and ate a bag of candy today.

I know there isn't an excuse. That there are better ways to stay fueled. But, here I am again :(

PaintedButterfly 04-02-2012 06:00 AM

I'm doing well on the no chocolate front.. well well except for the occasional time I seem to eat something with chocolate in without registering it is chocolate.. it's a bit weird.. but there's only been about 4 incidences of that at least!

jollygirl 04-07-2012 04:43 PM

Well, I did well until the last week. And then lost it, due to typical triggers - lack of sleep turning into lack of impulse control. Well, I still ate less candy and drank less soda over this Lent season than normal. Now, I just need to keep it up!

Hope everyone did well and feels well!
