Steel Magnolias #23

Good morning gals. Yep, I know it is only 4 am but I was up so decided to post. It is so much cooler here this morning and really pleasant in the house for a change. Jack should be home in just a few hours. They are telling him that Monday will likely be the last night he has to do this. The river is dropping much faster than they expected. He is all smiles about that.

Wow, I read an article this morning where the stores and restaurants in Tunica has lost 80% of their revenue because of the casinos being closed. I guess besides the tourists and such who go to the casinos, their are about 8-10 thousand employees that are not coming into stores and such. Most business have cut hours and laid off workers. I know that before the casinos were built 15 years or so ago, Tunica county was the poorest county in the nation.

I got everything I wanted to do done, but boy my feet hurt when I got home, more from the soles of my sandals than anything else. The swelling I have had in my feet have dried my feet out so badly. I try to keep up with it and use this great peppermint cream Gold Bond foot cream, but I didn't do it yesterday and I paid for it.

Today is pot roast, carrots and potato day since it is going to be nice and cool. Instead of pan drippings, I used ff beef broth and make a nice gravy with it. :T I had to chuckle at a post of facebook of a gal I met on a knitting page there recently. We have hit it off so I messaged her my recipe for the sopapilla cheesecake. I told her beware that once people got a taste of it, there would be none left. She said she made it for Mother's Day and it was phenomenal and she gave it to a friend who made it and got the same compliments so I guess sort of like an email you send to someone and then they send and on and on, my dessert is going to carry on around the country! Well, not my dessert, have to give credit to some lady in the little local newspaper where my bil's mom lives. It would put 2 lbs on you looking at it though and you could only cut the calories so far with this or it would change how it would taste.

Woohoo my yarn and stuff should be here next week sometime. I am about 1/3 done with my dil's scarf so should get it done about the time I get in my new stash. I ended up getting 12 skeins of yarn and a book on knitting with colors. Thank you Kelly!!! I bought this gorgeous handpainted yarn for the boys for their socks for Christmas called Tree Fort. I am pairing it with a forest green color. It has dark greens and a tan and some lighter greens, just beautiful. You will get a giggle out of me. I am such a lamebrain. I looked at the pattern I printed off for the cup cozys to see how much yarn it took and it had the chart laid out at the bottom to follow to make the pattern on the cozy. You do 4 rounds of stockinette stitch, then the pattern then 4 rounds of stockinette stitch at the bottom. So, it is 29 rows, which means I could probably make multiple cozys out of one skein and it would be a quick knit. I looked at it and said to myself "wait a minute they put the chart on backwards!" Well duh, Donna, most people are right handed so, no it isn't backwards YOU ARE! No wonder I have never done work that used a chart. It always confused me and now I know why, I have to read it backwards because I am left handed! Sheesh!

Jean: Hope your legs are feeling better. That is probably part of my problem yesterday is walking all over Walmarts, then Krogers, etc. I used to do cross stitch until it was difficult to see the stitches and I gave it up. Knitting is much more enjoyable to me that needlework was I think, though I did love doing it. I made the most adorable little pillow for Kelly when she was around 4-5. The back was this beautiful burgundy color with little pink and white flowers in it and the front side had a cross stitched fairy on it with a poem and a little pocket sewn on in the fabric from the back. It was a tooth fairy pillow. We never once lost money or teeth. The fairy always knew right where to go. :) We had the same issue here except it was a man who left his baby in the backseat. He was actually an asst pastor at a church. When he discovered his mistake it was about 2 hours later and the baby was already dead because of the heat in the car. Poor man is in prison right now convicted of the same thing as the Iowa woman and having to live with what happened on top of that. He too was not used to taking the baby to day care. We had a funny incident happen years ago way back when Jay was about 2. One of the sweetest couples in the world, they were the youth directors at our church in California, had this adorable baby boy. They showed up to church on Sunday without him. They get out of the car, I saw someone walk up to them, say something then they got into this ferocious argument in the church parking lot. Well, the baby was back at their apartment and they were screaming at each other, "I thought you put him in the car, no it was you who said you were going to do it, etc" back and forth and they went tearing out of the parking lot. That was before carseats and he was sitting in his little carrier waiting for them when they got back home all smiles.

Gail: I think once I get my projects done with my current stash, I will order some of that dishie yarn and make some dishcloths. I am about ready for some and frankly they cost an arm and a leg if they aren't cheap quality. Why buy crappy ones that all apart the first time they are washed and I wash my a lot because of germs and odors and such even though I don't wash dishes anymore. Glad your trip to WM went ok. I was thinking of you when I went yesterday. My eye dr and my nail tech are both in Walmart so while I was in there I did some people watching just to see how people were dressed and such. I think if people actually paid attention to other people they would be shocked. I was. I rarely pay any attention to anyone when I am shopping just want to get it done, but after your injuries and trip, I decided to look at people more. Whooeee I got an eyeful that's for sure and it was in the daytime around 11 am. I hate to think how they go in there late at night. I saw pj's slippers, barely covering the body clothing, ripped clothing showing body parts they shouldn't, and on and on. I saw that botox thing and there was such an uproar about her being on GMA and telling people that social services are getting into the act. I find children's pageant shows dispicable. JonBenet Ramsey was a huge pageant little girl and look what happened to her. You would have thought that would have made people sit up and think twice about parading their little girls out on stage like Playboy bunnies or runway models or something. I mean the things they do to those girls, wax their eyebrows and bodies, dye their hair, give them things to wear over their teeth to make them look perfect, makeup up the wazoo, dressing so short they almost show their panties and on and on. On top of that, 99% of these girls are total little brats from being pampered and given in to by their parents. It is disgusting.

Maggie: I agree if you do something with your hands you can't eat unless you put it down. Knitting is definitely not a one handed craft. We rarely take Fortune anywhere with us if we have to leave him in the car. We have trouble with them stealing dogs here. They get into the car take the dog and sell them to laboratories. They do that with lost dogs or strays too. I guess they have some no questions asked places which is revolting.

Susan: I never could find any info on what went on here. I looked at the police site but didn't find anything relating to the police logs. You used to be able to go to the air shows for free, but they charge you now so Jack and I quit going. Besides, you seen them once they pretty much do the same thing over and over again, but the Blue Angels are pretty amazing that's for sure.

Well, gals, it is 4:30 so am going to catch a few winks before Jack gets home. I imagine I will start cleaning the downstairs today while he is asleep except for the vacuuming, which I can do tonight. Tomorrow is shot with commissary day, but then Monday I can work on the upstairs in the evening or wait until Wed I guess.

Have a great Saturday all! Faye

Jean 05-14-2011 12:28 PM

Good Morning, Flowers! It's another cloudy, cold, and windy day although the wind has gone down some. I've got a load of laundry in both the washer and dryer, need to vacuum, and make a grocery run after lunch.

"Gma" -- I'm glad Jack can see an end to his night shift duty soon. :cp: I'm sure he is happy too. Your pot roast dinner sounds good; I think we are having chicken on the grill. Bob is off running errands and buying more bird/squirrel food. He is going to try and fix a section of grout in my kitchen floor as it is cracked and a little chunk is missing. I try not to go to WM on weekends or late afternoon because of the excess people there. I did pick up some VBS items yesterday and there were no checkouts open on the north end where I always park. I got in line and an employee asked me to move to the self service check out; I just looked at her and said, "thanks, but I prefer not to work for WM for free." She looked at me like I had two heads and walked away.

Not much to write about so guess I'll go take inventory and make a grocery list. Hope you all have a GREAT day! :D

Saturday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is in the low 60's and a beautiful cloudy day. The clouds are big and fluffy and the sky inbetween them is bright blue. Very beautiful. We just got back from seeing a couple get a room from "first call." Then we went to a nursery out in the country and bought some more plants for our garden. We got a round watermellon, some hot chili peppers, and some other veggies also. Will is out planting them as I type. The swelling in my knee has gone and taken the pain with it. I am not quite sure what I am going to make for dinner this day but will get it all figured out before long. Right now I am enjoying a lovely latte. The Quaker Oats company sent me a neat folder about Healthy Eating with Wheat Germ. I have had it for years and just came across it in one of my cookbook pockets recently. It is a 5 fold glossy card stock page with benefits and uses and a few recipes in it. I am going to have fun re-reading it. The recipes also have the nutritional information on them which is a plus for me for I always need to know what the points+ cost is. When I did more baking I would sometimes substitute some of the flour in a recipe with a an equal amount of wheat germ. It works well in cookies, muffins, biscuits, and breads. 1 Tablespoon equals 2 points+ which is more than flour costs in points but worth the benefits and taste if used sparingly. At least I think it is.:p

DONNA FAYE You get up with the :chicken:s girlfriend. :o I am still snoozing away at that time. That's too bad about all those folks losing their jobs because of the flooding. Not to wonder why the welfare rolls have swelled so big. Take good care of your feet this evening. They are the only two you have and you don't get anymore so treat them good.;)

JEAN I love what you said to that person at the store. :cp: I told that to Will and he said he will use that line next time they ask him to move to the express lane where you do everything yourself.

Everyone have a lovely afternoon and evening. Type at y'all later.

QuilterInVA 05-14-2011 05:12 PM

Good afternoon, ladies! Another rainy day but its up to 76 degrees.

I went to WW this morning and then the grocery store. Haven't done a thing this afternoon but think about what I should be doing and reading.

Faye, I guess one of the benefits of living in a county is the police log is public record and printed in the newspaper every Saturday along with all the property transfers. We don't have police, just sheriff and deputies. A hint on those charts, take it to a copy shop if you don't have an all-in-one printer and have them copy it mirrored. It will then be in the correct order for you. You can also scan it into your computer and print it mirrored. You dinner sounds good.

Jean, you'll be encountering more and more of the self-checkouts in the future. Do you use ATM's? Same thing.

Hi Maggie and Gail!

Jean 05-15-2011 12:31 AM

I've snoozed away the evening in front of the tv so am wide awake now that it is time to go to bed. :( I don't know why I was tired because I didn't do anything except laundry, sort some more clothes for the SOS store, and ironed a few things.

Maggie -- The weatherman said there is a chance of frost tomorrow night! :yikes: We just got the flowers planted and pots put out! Bob can hardly contain himself when the WM clerks ask him to go to the self checkouts. Beth uses them all the time because she thinks they are faster.

Susan -- It sounds like you had a quiet day today. :) I hope the rainy weather comes to an end soon; I miss the sunshine! I rarely use the ATM and then only at the drive-up here in town. It's the same with my debit card; I rarely use it out of town. Several of the teachers have had double charges or stolen #s from shopping in bigger cities.

I'm going to head off to bed and read. I'm hoping I will fall asleep and sleep all night! :crossed:

gma22 05-15-2011 09:36 AM

Good morning gals. It is cool and in the 50's at the moment. It is supposed to stay in the 60's for most of the week before creeping back up again. This afternoon we are taking a trip out to the commissary. I cannot go by myself or I would. Ever since my second surgery, when I walk any distance at all I get these horrible muscle cramps in the abdomen. They double me over. It was awful when I went to Walmart the other day and I just had a few things to get. Since I wasn't at my normal weight after surgery, I don't know if getting all this weight off will cause that to go away or not like it does when you have back pain or whatever when you walk and it slowly goes away when you lose the weight. I just don't know. I just know that it is pretty debilitating for me. I have questioned the doctor about it, even a couple drs actually and they said it could be a symptom of my colon being so stretched now, but it is just an possible not a fact so who knows? Anyway, I cannot walk and do two weeks of shopping so I have to ride in a cart. I hate it, despise it actually, but the pain is worse than the embarrassment of not being able to walk through the store.

I talked to Jack yesterday about how high the river was and it is 46 ft right now so has only gone down about a ft in a week so his boss spoke to soon. There is no way it will drop 4 ft by tomorrow. His foreman said he will have to work another week until the 23rd at the earliest, which was the original estimate. I had told Jack when his boss originally said Monday, that he shouldn't count on it because I didn't think it would happen and he would be really disappointed, but he was sure so I got on the bandwagon with him and now he has to endure another week of it. He was so exhausted yesterday as it is catching up with him that I was actually scared of him driving to work. I told him to text me when he got to work ok. He did and said he napped on and off last night. He is upstairs sound asleep now. He is staying on WW religiously as am I, but I think he was a little disappointed when he weighed himself this morning. He said he was "stuck." I told him not to fret all this stress can cause problems of all kinds and not to be surprised if after this is all over he doesn't drop a ton all at once. Me, I am dropping weight steadily, am finding no problems at all actually. I don't talk about it much here because I feel like I jinx myself every time I do. I tell you from time to time how much I have lost, but I keep stalling about doing a chart again because I don't want to go back. It is stupid because I am not having any problems at all and haven't for awhile. I did have a few months where I went back to eating badly and like an idiot took up drinking full sugar soda, but that was weeks ago. I haven't been craving sugar and except for what is in foods I cook the only sugar I have is an occasional WW or Skinny cow ice cream treat. I don't eat anything with sugar during the day at all. I do have carbs, but not sugar.

I am about halfway done with Alicia's scarf but am going to run out of yarn. I made it two stitches wider than called for and I know I will not have enough yarn so will make a trip this week out to Joann's and see if they have it since it is Bernat brand. All my goodies from Mother's Day should be here sometime next week. I am anxious to make a couple of those coffee cozys and see how they come out.

I think I am going to have to go back to the gyn and have the procedure done we talked about last fall. I don't want to do it, but she told me to give it 6-12 months and if things didn't stop and put me post menopausal to come back in and they would do the ablation. Well they haven't and so I guess I am going to have to face another hospital procedure, but it is going to have to wait until all this craziness is over and probably not until fall since Jack is having his surgery in August. I am not in any danger, just dealing with stuff that I should be over and done with and this is the only solution she has to stop it since they have found no signs of any kind of trouble. Crazy!

Jean: We had them in a couple WM and they took them out because people were stealing so much. They would put stuff in the bags when they removed them and put them in their cart that they hadn't scanned. So we have no self service and Jack likes checking himself out. I just don't like standing in line forever when the checkout people want to jaw with customers instead of just get people through. I don't mind a bit of pleasantry, but if you are holding people up for 10 minutes that is another thing and they are bad about it here. I had an incident a few months ago and still don't know what it was about. I received a new debit card in the mail with all new numbers and expiration date and such and my card was good for another 18 months. I guess the credit union noticed something and sent out a new card. I use my debit card all the time everywhere even on line and haven't had anything but that one thing with the bank and they never said what it was about. Maybe because I don't have hundreds of dollars for them to steal in my account so they don't bother with me!

Susan: It isn't in the online paper and we don't get the daily one so I don't know. Knowing this city they wouldn't tell you anyway because the less you know about crime in this city the better they seem to like it. I think they downplay a lot of what goes on here. You wouldn't know anything if it weren't for the media here. I saw they are having the story of the police from West Memphis AR on 60 minutes this week. This was a really sad story as the police chief's son was one of the men killed by these militant nuts when they pulled them over for a routine traffic stop. It end up in a shootout at the Walmart there in W Memphis and the father and son in the van were both shot and killed. His widow is suing the city and the police officers involved even though her son and husband fired first on officers that didn't even have their guns drawn. I know that I can scan it in and my printer program will reverse it, I am not sure I need to do that as it is a pretty easy chart, but it just was funny I didn't connect it.

Maggie: I have to be really careful about what types of fiber I put in my diet. I notice somethings do ok and some of them even drinking a lot of water will bind me up and wheat germ is one of them for some reason. Who knows why. Hope you are having a nice Lord's Day today. I can hear the birds singing outdoors and it is one of those blue sky days that are almost white it is so clear.

Well everyone have a great day. I need to eat a bite of breakfast then go upstairs and shower and dress for the commissary later. I am in the middle of a great legal thriller and want to finish it too. Faye

Jean 05-15-2011 12:07 PM

Good Morning, Flowers! We got up to cold and rain, but the sun is shining right now although still cold and breezy. I hope it warms up! My flowers are hanging in there for now. Bob is singing at second service and I just finished reading the paper. I have piles of clothes sitting around the livingroom; I had planned to put sweatshirts and turtlenecks away but with this weather will wait another week. BRRRR!

"Gma" -- I'm sorry you and Jack are going to have to put up with with another week of night duty. :( Are you able to match yarn dye lots when you run out before you finish a project? I'm sure Alicia will enjoy the scarf. I know you don't look forward to another surgery but if it will solve the problem then that is what is important. It would be wonderful if someone could figure out, for sure, what causes the pain when you walk. I hope the commissary run goes smoothly for you today.

I need to change clothes and get my potatoes and corn in the oven, chicken is going on the grill! Enjoy your Sunday! :D

Sunny Cold Sunday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a chilly day here in the Heartland in the 50 with the every blowing wind. We ate at home again this Sunday and are going to start doing that more often. Then we went to our favorite place to buy plants and bought some burssels sprouts to plant in our every growing veggie garden. Some of the seeds we planted are coming up. Corn and radishes. Most of the veggies we bought plants. I have a chicken in the rotisserie as I type which we will eat after evening services. I have to go to see my doc tomorrow for a follow up since she did tweek some of my meds. After this visit I don't think I will have to go back for about a year. She is in a different town and we always enjoy the drive there. My knee on my "good leg" swells here when it gets hot probably because of the humidity. Anyway it hurts like the dickens. And Wouldn't you know it I couldn't locate my knee brace. Will and I got our thinking caps on and have probably now figured out where it went and we will stop hunting for it since I haven't had it since we moved here. Remember he had some things stolen out of our motorhome when we were out of town. Well I remember that brace was rolled up and in the bottom of a garment bag. And Will rememberd he had his sherriff jacket in a garment bag and they both are missing. Probably when all my charms were stolen and some of his knifes which he was able to get back by the way. One of those hoodlems is probably getting a kick out of wearing that jacket. I ordered another brace today and it cost me $80. Now I would have much rather have spent that money on something else don't ya know.:p I probably won't have to wear it much but when the humidity get high I will be glad I have it.

DONNA FAYE I sure hope that an operation can fix your cramping problem. Don't let it get you down to have to use a cart. My goodness girlfriend ~ that is what those carts are for ~ to give a help to the shoppers who need a little or a lot. I am so thankful they have them for I too use them on occasion. Once a real good looking elderly gentleman asked me if I wanted to race. Hope you find all you need at the commissary. We get new debit cards just about every few months now. And have been sent cards from the bank with new numbers way before the others had expired. Keeping trouble away. The trouble I was just having with my debit card was on a not very old card but I have a new one now.

JEAN What fun to cook outdoors. Pretty soon we will be doing a lot of that. That must have been scary to have that tornado touch down so close to your place.

Everyone have a lovely afternoon.

QuilterInVA 05-15-2011 07:44 PM

Good evening, ladies. It's been a pleasant Sunday with rain off and on but in the 80s.

Faye, maybe we'll find out what was going on in one the episodes of Policewomen of Memphis. Y'all do have some problems there according to that show. I dropped a stitch on my scarf and with that fuzzy yarn I couldn't find it quickly so I tore it all out. I hope the commissary wasn't too crowded today.

Jean, frost in the middle of May! No thanks! I hope your plants survive okay. I have 7 beautiful pink and 2 yellow roses blooming right now.

Maggie, I used to eat out a lot but anymore I'm content to eat at home so I can have what I should be eating.

Hi, Gail.

It's time for Extreme Makeover so have a good evening.

Jean 05-15-2011 10:19 PM

Maggie -- Sorry you are missing your brace but glad that you remembered what happened to it. I guess I don't remember the motor home theft or else it happened when you were without internet service. :dunno: The tornado was probably 100+ miles away; it did some damage to a few farm buildings but nothing to people.

Susan -- It is 52 degrees right now but the wind is picking up. Both the Weather Bug and the weather channel on tv show frost warnings for tonight. We brought our little flower pots into the garage and Bob covered the bigger ones. This weather is just plain crazy. It's hard to plan a day ahead for clothing or outside activities. :(

I am going to read for a bit and then watch the news. It was a late night last night and early morning today.

GailR 05-16-2011 08:55 AM

Good morning everyone! Happy Monday! I'm happy to report that my father-in-law is doing well but still in the rehab hospital. He wants to stay there until he can put weight on his leg. And no matter how hard I try to convince him to come visit with us for awhile he just does not want to leave Virginia Beach. On the other side of the coin, my dad's Parkinson's Disease is getting worse. His tremors have increased since I saw him when my father-in-law had his accident. I know he has his good days and his bad days and perhaps this was just a bad day he was having on Saturday.

Sorry for the quick post but I wanted y'all to know I'm alive and well! :D I'll be back in here later to do some personal posting.

gma22 05-16-2011 09:45 AM

Good morning everyone! It is going to be a nice cool day today so I may get something done today. I sure hope so. I need to get cleaning done again as I didn't get anything done this weekend like I planned. We did get commissary shopping done and even though he was tired Jack stayed up, we got a bite of lunch together and talked about planning for next year's vacation. We are planning a cruise and I hope with all the extra money to be able to put the deposit down then use our tax refund next year to pay for the rest of the trip. He got home about an hour ago, ate some cereal and went to bed. I imagine he is dead to the world by now!

Today was weigh in day and I am down 6 lbs from last week. :carrot: Jack and figured if I can lose 2 1/2 lbs per week between now and next year's vacation I should be in good shape as far as walking and all that, which is my main concern for the cruise at this point. If as the time is close, and I have lost what I feel should put me at a fairly healthy weight again, not at goal, but certainly much much better than now and I am finding the muscle cramps still don't go away with walking, I may consider just renting a scooter to take on the cruise for the week to do excursions and such so I can enjoy the trip. Hopefully, as the weight comes off the cramping will go away. It is a wait and see at this point.

I bought some yummy smelling candles yesterday, half pear and half cinnamon. Boy do they smell good. I love cinnamon smell in my house and this adds just a bit of softness to round it out.

Maggie: Two things I have had stolen really hurt me, the watch Jack bought me as a wedding present and this beautiful cross necklace he he bought me for graduation from high school. The cross was especially dear because it was unique. It was very small and the white gold cross was a twisted pattern looking like twisted ivy then it had a diamond in the middle. For some reason the twisted cross always made me think of the Savior dragging that wooden cross up the hill to Calvary. Both these items were stolen when we moved. Money to replace them just didn't do it as I couldn't replace the necklace. I got a giggle out of your post because I read it wrong at first. I was reading about the veggies you planted and then saw I have a chicken! For some reason didn't see the "in the rotisserie" part and thought you had bought a chicken to raise out in that yard with the veggies, fruits and the two dogs! That's what I get for reading too fast.

Gail: Sorry your father is having such a hard time. It is a truly awful disease for one thing it drags on and on and especially for the elderly the symptoms really take a toll on the body and what it can do. At least your fil is not laying around the bed predicting his own doom so that is good. How is the knitting coming along. I am almost out of the yarn for the scarf and haven't been anyplace to look so I may just order it online again and pay the shipping costs. I am not in a hurry though as I have until the middle of July to get it done. Do you find any 100% cotton yarn does ok for dishcloths? I have some and I am thinking about making some to test it out. It is left over from a project and I have several colors still in their wrappings.

Susan: One of my facebook friends talked about that very thing and said she wondered if me standing out in my nightgown and sweater with my clogs on would be on Policewomen of Memphis. Thank heavens there were no cameras! :lolol: We have some real feisty lady cops here in town. Most of what you see on tv is the bad part of town too so they really put their life on the line. Our police force is stretched pretty thin and we are such in a mess with the budget and such we cannot hire more of them. We have really cut back on eating out too. No matter what, it is very hard to control and eat properly eating out because you aren't fixing it.

Jean: Jack doesn't like chicken on the grill and I wish he did because I really like it. My nephew fixes a mean bbq chicken on the grill and usually cooks some up if you are up there in the summer time. Hopefully, permanent spring warm weather will start for you soon. I just hope you northerners don't have big bouts of rain or Jack will be at this forever. If he has to work Monday night and they are done, he isn't working Tuesday for sure. He has so much overtime it won't matter anyway what he does. I look forward to next Tuesday getting here that's for sure. My sleep is so screwed up and the dog is so messed up because he always slept with Jack in the bed at night that he won't sleep up there and he jumps on and off the recliner and drives me nuts, barking at me and such and he has never done that before.

Well gals, it is breakfast time. I am going to have fresh raspberries for breakfast this morning and cereal I think. Have a great start to your week all! Faye

Jean 05-16-2011 11:50 AM

Good Morning! The sun is shining brightly and it's promising to be a nice day. I've been to church, stopped to drop off Zowie's birthday picture for the newspaper, and home again. Now what chore do I start on next? *sigh* Sitting here is much more fun! ;)

Gail -- I think, in the long run, your father-in-law will be much happier if he can stay "home" where he is comfortable while he recuperates. I'm sorry about your dad and hope he was just having a bad day. I know my dad got very shaky taking Prednisone and I worried about him alot.

"Gma" -- :congrat: on losing 6#s! Whatever you are doing is working so keep on doing it! Going on a cruise will be good motivation to stay on program. What brand of candles did you buy? The flavor sounds delicious. We grilled Schwans' boneless, skinless chicken breasts and they were very moist. We're eating leftovers for lunch today. Tonight we are going out to eat with the group that Bob sings with. The pastor's wife sings with them and they go out to eat when someone moves away. I missed going with the bell choir because we were in Sioux Falls. I hope you get your chores done that are on your list today.

Guess I will go do dishes first and then move on to vacuuming the dust/fur hunks. Ernie is really shedding this year. Have a GREAT day and enjoy! :D

Jean -- from Iowa!

Marvelous Monday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a beautiful 70 degree day here in the Heartland. The wind isn't blowing and that is wonderful for Will to spread some of that great dirt in the garden and lawn on low spots. Went to the doc today and all is well and I don't have to go back for a year unless I need to for some reason that comes up in between. My meds are all working like they should and she just added a small dosage of aspirn to my pill coctail, because after all, I am getting advanced in age & aspirn is a good thing for you to aid in preventing bad things from happening.:p While Will was in Wall*Mart he bought me some Crayola Freez'r Pop containers so I can make my own popcicles. I have this marvelous recipe I am anxious to try which is called "Watermelon-Jalepeno Ice Pops" which are 2 points + for grownups. :) The recipe calls for 8 (3-ounce) molds and these I have are 6 (2 1/2 ounce) moulds. Maybe if I get another set of 3 the recipe will fill all 9 and it figures out to be still be 2 points + each and I will just have one more pop.:D He bought the last set they had so I will have to wait until they get more. OH ~ there was a set there where someone had stolen one out of the pack but they won't sell it that way. It will just be thrown out. Such a nice day calls for something to put on the grill don't ya think. Oh, BTW ~ this is my weigh day and I am up a pound. I do fluctuate on this road to thin and I refuse to trip. I'll get over this bump and get on down the road.

DONNA FAYE Another 6 pounds! :congrat: :encore: :woo: I can see you now on that cruise looking good. I wish you the best down the road to thin. We can do this thing! Yep we do have the gumption to do it. I would love to have chickens in the yard. Fresh eggs are the best so I have to rely on Egglands. But a chicken in the yard would be fun. When we move to Texas we will have chickens and grow our own beef. That time is getting closer ~ We are looking at a couple of years. I think we will get Texas plates on the Jeep sooner than we move there though.:D I think it will be fun to attend WW where I first started down the road to thin. Doubt if the same leader is there but it will be fun to attend there.

JEAN Those chicken pieces are great to bbq for we have grilled them before and they always come out moist and yummy. I like the seasonal magazine sized recipe booklets put out by Cooking Light and got the latest called Quick & Easy Low-Calorie Recipes (122 of them). It will be displayed until June 3, 2011 then the Summer one will be out. Just thought if you wanted a neat booklet to look at with yummy recipes to try you might check it out. Will picked it up at Hastings Book Store which is a small national chain.

SUSAN Sounds like Spring has sprung in your area. Those flowers blooming are lovely sounding. Our glads are coming up. It is so much easier to do the program when we eat at home isn't it. Even though they give the points of their food it just doesn't seem to work as well as home cooked.

GAIL Old folks can get so stubborn. But they know what they want and no matter can we change their minds unless we can make it seem it is "their" idea to make the change. Poor dear is realizing it that he is slipping and it is getting to him it seems. I wish I lived closer to you. Will gets a kick out of me for the old men always like to talk to me. He will be in shopping and come out to the Jeep and there will be an elderly gentleman standing by my window having a conversation with me. Happens a lot. A real lot. I like the old folks. Life is good. When my father had old-timers disease he always knew who I was. Their memory plays tricks on them but he always knew me and that was so special to me. My mother always loved it when Will & I would stop by for my father always "came to." It was sad to see such a brilliant man lose the edge like that. I have such good memories of him when he was "oh so smart." Brillient in fact.

All y'all have a wonderful late afternoon which it has become. Type at y'all later.

QuilterInVA 05-16-2011 07:19 PM

Good evening, ladies - yep, more rain. In fact we are under a flooding alert until noon on Wednesday. It is in the 80s now so that is nice.

I went to the Y this morning and did water aerobics and water zumba with my friend Linda, then we decided to see how much we could do of the next class. Managed a total of 2-1/2 hours and now we have a goal to be able to do all 3 classes. I burned 985 calories this morning which is 10 APs.

Didn't do much this afternoon but laundy and I'm going to go quilt a little after I finish this. Tomorrow is work.

Faye - congratulations on losing another 6 pounds. Way to go!

Maggie - you've got the right attitude. We can do everything right and still see the scale go up. Just hang in there and it will come off.

Jean, summer is just around the corner if Ernie is shedding his winter coat. Does he ever go outside?

Gail, I have a friend with Parkinson's who is also a quilter. She had to give up hand work, and she was marvelous at it, and now she is getting to be quite a machine quilter but some days she can't even hold a glass of water to get a drink. I hope your father was just having an off day. I know it is worrisome for you. I wonder if your FIL feels like if he comes to your house he'll never get to go home again?

Have a great evening!

Jean 05-16-2011 11:11 PM

Maggie -- I can just see you licking your popsicles! :T Glad your meds are working well for you! We've both taken baby aspirin for more years than I can remember. Will have to see if any of our stores carry the cooking recipe booklet, since we don't have much of a selection for magazines anywhere local.

Susan -- You outdid your self in the :swim: :workout: routines today! Ernie doesn't go outside, but I think his coat is thicker this year because it was colder and he sleeps in the basement at night. Hope your work day tomorrow is a good one!

gma22 05-17-2011 08:18 AM

Good morning to you all! Cool again this morning, but it will be warming back up soon towards the end of the week. The president was in town yesterday for a black school's high school commencement. They supposedly "won" the competition to get him here, but personally like all politicians I imagine it was an opportunity for votes next year. I mean, pass around good will in the flood area to kids, ya know? They would all do it, not just him.

I hope I have caught up on sleep somewhat now and can get something done. I didn't get anything done again yesterday and it is because I am just hang dog tired. This crazy stuff with Jack is just catching up to us I guess. Hopefully it will be over by next Tues, but there is a lot of rain up north and I have a friend who lives near the Missouri river and she says it is as high as she has ever seen and it feeds into the Mississippi.

I got all my beautiful yarn yesterday and have started a cup cozy to see how it looks. I have to get out and get the yarn for the scarf to finish it sometime this week.

Jack has to go today and take his FMLA papers to the drs office to have them filled out for his knee surgery later on in the summer. The city wants the papers 8 weeks in advance and his surgery is now scheduled for the end of August. He is not using FMLA, but sick time, but they require it when an employee is going to be out a long period of time I guess.

Susan: Hope your rain doesn't last much longer. Sounds like you got one heck of a workout, good for you. I think even us older gals retain water from time to time and can make the scale inch up a bit even if we are being good as gold. It all evens out in the end.

Jean: Fortunately, Fortune doesn't shed at all so I don't have that problem, Butterscotch sure did though and I was always cleaning up golden hairs from him. Yes, Jack and I take low dose aspirin too and have for a long time. I also take a good multi vitamin and calcium besides an acidophilus pill which seems to help with my intestinal stuff somewhat. I got the little glass candles from Glade that have two fragrances one on top of the other. I burned them about 5 hours yesterday and the smell of the pear was really nice as I had other type of a cinnamon candle in the kitchen and it blended really well. Speaking of cinnamon, I bought cinnamon Cheerios at the commissary the other day. I hope I like them. I like cheerios period. I have never tried the chocolate, vanilla combo, but the banana ones are pretty good. I bet the cinnamon ones could make a nice trail mix type thing combined with some other things of like flavor.

Maggie: I will be glad when Jack goes back to a normal schedule so we can put stuff out on the grill in the evenings. I too enjoy grilled food in the summer especially, but actually all year long. You can usually grill here without freezing to death from about late February to November sometimes. Hope Will can find you one more freezer pop thing. Those sound unusual that's for sure, but peppers can add great flavor to sweet things sometimes.

I guess I should get out of here. Jack should be home in about 10 minutes or less and I try to at least talk to him while he is eating breakfast before he heads to bed. Have a wonderful Tuesday all. TTFN Faye

GailR 05-17-2011 08:32 AM

Yesterday, I got carried away with....cleaning. Cleaning out our walk-in closet (which one had a difficult time walking into!) and trying to put order to some of the yarn that had not been put away from the festival or had been pulled out of it's storage space and not put back. And then the patterns! Thank you internet--I have printed out so many pages and they needed to be organized into binders I had already started.

Today it's going to be raining. Severe thunderstorms and it feels like evening instead of morning because it's so gray outside. Today will be a good day for knitting.....oh yeah, any day is a good day for knitting! I've got today's menu for dinner planned: Parmesan chicken (WW recipe that Wayne actually likes), linguini, and a salad.

Donna Faye, Wayne and I hope to take a vacation next year since he's found this job. All we know is that we would like to go somewhere there's a beach and an ocean. I'm leaning towards the gulf coast of Florida. We'll see. The last time we went on vacation it was to Hilton Head, SC and that was four years ago. We love to walk on the beach. You're doing such a great job in weight loss--CONGRATS TO YOU FOR SIX POUNDS GONE! I surely hope those cramps go away with the weight loss. THAT was one reason I started losing weight last year--my knees were hurting and I felt like if that kept up I would be looking at knee replacement. After 5% lost, my knees felt so much better. I hope the weight loss works for you in the same way. But with all that said, my knees have started aching again in the past couple of days. I need to get back to being serious about my weight loss and see if the pain goes away again. Yes, I know I've had losses but really I have not taken the plan seriously like I did in the beginning and this morning when I stepped on the scale it showed I was up. And I made a promise to myself that I would never see 200 again. It's not close to that but it could be if I don't nip this in the bud now. Anyway, I'm thinking my body is getting used to the weight I am not but my knees don't like it and a message is being sent to me--Lose more weight! So I'm setting a goal for myself: Lose 20 pounds by the end of this year. Doable, don't you think? In answer to your question about cotton yarn: No, I don't think every cotton yarn knits well into dish cloths. I find the cheaper Peaches and Cream cotton yarn is the best (I have not tried Dishie from Knit Picks yet) holds up much better. I had bought an expensive ball of cotton yarn from my local yarn shop and the knitted cloth has no body to it at all. It's way too soft. Probably not made for being knitted into a workhorse of a dish cloth! Personally, I think every brand of yarn has its place. I know some people are yarn snobs...and I can be one at times. However, I think even the Red Heart brand has it's place even if it's in children's crafts or if that is the only thing one can afford in this ecnomical climate than by all means knit with it and be proud of the piece you knitted. Okay...stepping down from my soapbox now....

Jean, yes both Wayne and I agree with you about my FIL. At first, after his accident, we were adamant about him moving near us or at least coming up here to be with us while recuperates. We were scared for him. Since then, we have stepped back from the situation so to speak and now that he's healing well and he's telling us what he's going to do, taking matters into his own hands (speaking with hospital staff, etc.) we have come to the conclusion that he would be happier in his own home. Sooooo...this weekend we go down there we're going to extra-clean his house and freshen up the place. And when we know he's coming home, I'm driving down (may be without Wayne) there grocery shop for him. (And also be with my Dad at the same time.) All of this happening to my FIL makes me so much more appreciative of my brother and all he does for our Dad. (And I've told my brother this.)

Maggie, I saw that recipe...I have it! I thought, how interesting! Too bad Walmart would not sell the opened package at a reduced price to Will. That way everyone would be happy. Do you think Walmart gets some kind of tax break for damaged goods? Just a thought. Wayne has been taking a baby asperin each day for years now. I like your attitude about weight loss--I made a promise to myself that no matter what (because weight does fluctuate) that I would keep on going. I did not go to WW last week because of my vanity. I will not skip another meeting and I will go this week. (The bruising is going away.) Anyway...you keep right on; the weight will come off!! I would love for you to live near me...or even in Va. Beach where I could visit...or you could visit my Dad and my FIL. My FIL is a charmer--the ladies love him. My Dad has become reclusive and not the man he once was. My FIL who is 86 is sharp as a tack! My Dad seems to be so afraid of things; doing things for himself. Sometimes I think he's afraid to move out of his recliner. If I think too much about my Dad I get so scared thinking about his future. My Dad is 80. I take one day at a time and that's what I tell him to do: take 1 day at a time and then you have a week, then a month. Everytime I go down there I want to get him out of the house; he rarely goes anywhere outside the house. He will go to the doctor appointments. He will go to get his hair cut. He will take a drive somewhere but not for long periods of time. I will admit sometimes I'm scared to walk into Dad's house because I'm afraid he will not look as well as I last saw him...and that can be all of a week...or a month. I find the older I get the more I pray. Lately, I've found myself talking to the Lord throughout the day. Most often I pray for wisdom.

Susan, I think you're right. Wayne and I have talked to each other about the one of the reasons we think his Dad does not want to come to Delaware is that if he does he will not see Virginia Beach again. We've tried telling him that is not so. So far, my Dad's tremors is in his hands--and yes, it's worse. I watched a tv show late one night on RealTV and it was about one man's journey with Parkinson's Disease. I learned a lot. And yes, it will get worse. With my Mom's passing and Parkinson's Disease, I know my Dad is depressed. I asked him if he spoke with his doctor about this. He told me he had...but he's not taking any meds for that. My brother goes with him to the doctor's appointments and actually goes inside the examining room with him. Even though my brother is a wonderful caregiver for our Dad, sometimes I think my brother is in denial about the progressiveness of the disease. .....I'm in awe of the workout you got! You go, girlfriend!

Well, it's going to be a gloomy day but I know all this rain is going to make things so much greener when it stops! We need the rain in Delaware. I know some people absolutely positively do not need anymore rain! And then there is Texas--they need rain and they're not getting any. Crazy. Some places getting flooded whether it's "controlled" or not. Some people already experiencing droughts.

Everyone take care.....pray I don't get lost inside a closet anymore! Hah!

Jean 05-17-2011 10:54 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is shining brightly, beautiful blue sky, no clouds, and NO wind. It's supposed to get up to 65 this afternoon so we'll see if it does. I visit the oral surgeon this afternoon and I'm not looking forward to that. My new glasses are in; no one bothered to call so I finally called them this morning.

"Gma" -- I don't know why but it seems like I am more tired on some days than others. :dunno: I hope you can get a good nap in today. I'm sure O's visit was related to campaigning for the next election. I just hope there is a stand-out to oppose him and win. I think I had a Glade candle this winter; it was a Hawaiian scent and smelled so good. I like Cheerios too! They are my "go to" for a snack that crunches when I don't have a lot of points left. :T I haven't seen the cinnamon flavor.

Gail -- I wish you could come and organize my closets! That is a good job to have done. We have smaller closets so have our "stuff" stored in numerous places. We've added storage space but it's all shelves or cupboards in the bathrooms, hall, and basement. You are smart to organize all of your patterns. I would highly recommend a Maui beach! :cheer: I don't know why but the sand is different and the water such a beautiful blue. We never get tired of going there. It's nice of you to clean your FIL's house and shop for groceries. I'm sure he is looking forward to going home again.

I need to keep working on my SOS box. I don't know where all this "stuff" came from. :o Hope you all have a terrific Tuesday and enjoy your day! :D

Jean -- from Iowa!

Maggie 05-17-2011 03:30 PM

Tuesday Mid-day

GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is a windy cool day here in the Heartland. I had a wonderful nights sleep and have had lunch of left over rotisserie chicken chopped up with BBQ sauce mixed in and heated and placed over some toasted sourdough bread. Yummy! That tucked nicely in my daily points + ration. Life is good. My watermellon is getting real cold in the fridge so I will be making popcicles this day. Will got me a set that will work from the dollar store. Not as cute as the cayon ones but they will do. :p If Wal*Mart gets anymore of the ones I like best then I will have completed a set ~ if not ~ so be it. Mox Nix. Will has been dickering with our auto insurance folks and getting our rates reduced. We have good driving & low milaege records which help along with our longevity with the company. I have been with them since I was a teenager. Now that is longevity if anything is.:o Well ~ his talking with them knocked our bill down a good $48. Every little bit helps in this rotten economy. We don't have an agency here in this town anymore so can't talk to an agent face to face but have to use the phone.

DONNA FAYE Yep that Mo does dump into the Miss and can cause a mess. Put a picture of that cup cozy up when you get it finished. Bet it turns out cute. BBQ out doors is one of my favorite things about good weather. So many things can be cooked out there. I think for Memorial day we will be cooking a turkey breast in the smoker. I will peal back the skin and rub spices on the meat and then replace the skin and let it smoke away. Then before serving the skin comes off and is discarded and the meat sliced up looks lovely with that edge of spices baked in one rim. And so tasty too.

JEAN What a nice beautiful day you are having out there. The oral surgeon. Let us know how that visit worked out for your tooth. I wonder why they didn't call and tell you your glasses were ready. Strange. But I remember ordering something in a store and was told the company never made that item and I just asked that they call the company and order it anyway. They never called me but they did get the item for I saw it in their window one day and went in and said I wanted to purchase that item I had them order for me that the company didn't make and is now in your window. They asked me if they could keep it for a week on display. :p I let them.

GAIL I imagine your closets are wearing a smile now. I love that parmesan chicken and it is a regular around here. In the summer I like to serve it with a sf green jello and cottage cheese salad I make that is 2 p+ a serving. It also has crushed pineapple in it. I am going to make those pops after i get off here and will let you know how they turn out. It is nice your bruises are fading away and you can get out and among them. You will be glad to get back to WW when you go.

SUSAN How is our exercise queen doing this day? You amaze me and being amazed is such a good feeling.:o

Everyone have a great day. Type at y'all later.

Back to tell you: I made the pops. Once I rounded all the ingredients up they were so easy to make. Just hope that they pass the taste test. It takes awhile for them to freeze so I won't know for a while yet. I used Splenda instead of sugar in them. I haven't made pop cycles in so many years. Used to make them in small paper cups with wooden sticks in them for kids when they were young. But these are for "grown-ups."

2 Attachment(s)
I had to use a soda can as I didn't have a Starbucks type cup, but it will fit anything from a 10 oz coffee cup to 20 oz and a soda can as well. I couldn't find my camera so my Iphone had to do and it is a little fuzzy, but for Maggie, here it is!!! OH and btw, I tore the original pattern out 5 times and finally made my own. I call it my "Top O' the Morning" cozy! ;0) Jean, was too fast for me. I finished a second one and put this one on a 10 oz glass. This pattern is called a woven stitch. It sort of looks a bit like a basket weave, doesn't it?

Jean 05-17-2011 07:07 PM

Maggie -- It's nice your insurance company would lower your rate. I don't think many would in this day and age. I ordered no-line tri/bi forcals this time and they will take some getting used to. I tried them when I was in school and hated them so went back to lines for a bigger field of vision. My visit with the oral surgeon as I anticipated it would; the tooth is coming out May 27th. I will have a different surgeon but the receptionist assured me he is just as nice and as good as what he does as the one I saw today. Otherwise I was going to have to wait until the end of July. There are two surgeons who come here from Sioux City, two days a week. They are busy! I will be anxious to see how you like the popsicles. :T

"Gma" -- The cozy turned out really nice! You do good work! :cheer:

GailR 05-18-2011 08:01 AM

Happey Wednesday everyone!

Yesterday turned out to be a fun day. It felt more like a Saturday. My youngest daughter took yesterday off from work and we went to see a movie together--"Something Borrowed" starring Kate Hudson. A chick flick. Cute. Wayne was home by the time we returned back to the house and after my daughter left we ran an errand to the mall. Again, it felt like a Saturday! Today I go get fitted for the halter monitor I'm supposed to wear for 24 hours.

Maggie, Wayne was able to get reduced rates on our auto insurance. We have a great agent (State Farm) and he has worked with Wayne giving him reduced rates for each of our cars for different reasons. I think a lot of people could get reduced rates if they only called their insurance agent and/or do some comparison shopping. Most agents do not want to lose long-time customers. Good for y'all. Have you tasted those popsicles yet?!

Donna Faye, wonderful work! Love the cozies!! Those would make cute Christmas presents...or little gifts to give out any time for that matter.

Jean, I have had more than my fair share of oral surgery! I'll be thinking of you on that day. Bless your heart.

Susan, giving a big wave to you!

gma22 05-18-2011 10:25 AM

Good morning ladies. It looks like it is going to be a beautiful day here today. It will be in the lower 70's and sunny so that is nice. Looks like me may just get a final reprieve from the overnights. The river was down to 44 ft day before yesterday and has to reach 42 for Jack not to have to work overtime and overnight and they are saying Friday will be the last night he has to do that! :carrot::carrot: Nobody is happier than I as then maybe Fortune will be settled and happy again and we can get back to normal.

I don't watch biggest loser anymore but I saw two sisters will compete against each other for the final, which should be interesting.

I am on my third cozy pattern and think I can get one more out of the blue so I am going to make 4 different patterns. The are great for everything from catching sweat on glasses and soda cans to keep you from burning your fingers on non handled coffee cups. They have been a whiz to make that's for sure and a lot of fun to pick out the stitch patterns and give them a whirl. I am doing a "purled ladder" one right now and it is interesting.

I talked for 2 hours to my girlfriend that got the blue and pink socks for her birthday on Monday. She was so funny. She just went on and on about how perfectly they fit around her toes and her heel and the length, then she was going on about the tiny stitches and how did I do that. It was funny. We had a delightful visit. I don't get to see her very often and sure do miss her. She is like another sister to me and always has been. Like I said, I have been best friends with her for 44 years, we met in jr high music class. It is funny because she and I learned to knit together when we took 4H knitting in jr high. She told me she can't remember how to knit anymore, but she does crochet.

I cleaned all my downstairs last night, did two loads of laundry and knitted another cozy so I didn't get to bed until almost midnight. I had to get up before the chickens to take out the trash. Thank goodness, Jack can take that job back over starting next week. He usually takes it out after he gets ready for work in the morning.

Gail: Today I am going to sit and knit and get the other two patterns finished. It has been fun picking a stitch I like then making these because they are a quick knit. I imagine it is the same with the dishcloths. I am going to take your suggestion and get some peaches and cream yarn and make a couple discloths as I do need them desperately again and the good ones to buy at the store are expensive and ridiculously so. Did you like the movie? I saw last week that Johnny Depp is going to play Nick Charles, (the Thin Man series) in a new movie. I love William Powell and Myrna Loy in those films and they only made 6 of them. I hope these are as entertaining and I am sure they will be.

Maggie: I don't know what we will do Memorial Day, maybe go to a movie that weekend if anything interesting is playing. I noticed the book I finished and was made into a movie, "The Lincoln Lawyer" is going to dvd so will have to get a copy of that. He is called the "Lincoln Lawyer" because he uses Lincoln Continentals as his office. He has a fax and copier, the whole nine yards in his car and his trunk holds his files. It is a grand book and very "gotcha" at the end. We have Geico and have for years and really love it. They are johnny on the spot to get you taken care of and we get several discounts driving record, age, years as their customer and a couple other ones. We used to get multiple car until we got rid of the grand marquis.

Jean: I will be thinking about you next month when the ole tooth has to come out. I know it is more invasive but I prefer oral surgery to just yanking it out. It gives me the willys to hear them crack it from the bone when they just pull it. You will come through with flying colors! No one has called me about my contacts yet and I surmise they have the wrong phone number. I will call them when I get done here and see if they are in yet. I still have to order the rest of them online and will do that next week. I order just what my insurance allows from Walmart as they are high as a kite. They cost me $54 a box at WM last year and the very same contacts were $62 a box this year. I have a $150 allowance so I buy 3 boxes (my eyes are both exactly the same,) pay the difference, which this year was $35 and then go to Vision Direct online and buy 2 more boxes. They give a 10% discount to Spectera insurance people so I can get a box for $44 there. I don't buy them all there because they don't take insurance, just give a break to people who do have it. One box holds 6 pairs, which is 6 months as you wear these a month at a time. I always buy an extra box just in case of tears or whatever.

Susan: Hope all is going great with you and the rain has gone out to sea or up the coast!

Well gals, I need to go and get some breakfast. I ate a banana sitting here posting, but need to get some fiber in me this morning to keep me filled up until lunch. Have a grand middle of the week! Faye

Jean 05-18-2011 12:05 PM

Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and no wind again today -- beautiful! I'm waiting for a gal to bring me 2 boxes of used greeting cards that I will take to the church for the kids to make their own cards or whatever they do with them. I picked up the downstairs and need to start another SOS box. I'm finding clothes I haven't worn in way too many years to admit to! :o They would be too big now :cp: !

Gail -- I had to wear one of those monitors several years ago. If it is the same type I had, putting a bra on and off is tricky! ;) I'm thinking maybe I just left it on. It was nice that you could spend time with your daughter and take in a movie. Do both of your daughters live close to you?

"Gma" -- I'm sure all of you will be glad to be back on a regular work schedule for Jack. It's always nice to catch up with an old friend. I saw The Lincoln Lawyer advertised on tv so wondered if it was the same as the book you talked about reading. Enjoy your "sit and knit" day! :)

I need to keep sorting! Have a wonderful Wednesday and enjoy! :D

Wonderful Wednesday Aka: Humpday

GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is a cool 55 degree day with the ever present wind blowing here in the Heartland. OK here is the report on those popsicles. YUMMY. Just a bare hint of the jalapeno that sneaks through. They are going to be made again when these are all gone. I want to keep some of these in the freezer during the summer.:p I think I will chop up the other pepper I have and freeze it and grate and juice the limes I didn't use for this batch and freeze it also. The watermelon we will eat.:D Life is good. Yep, grown up popsicles.
Here is the recipe for those who what to try making them.

WATERMELON-JALAPENO ICE POPS
Hands-on time: 10 min. total time:
6 hr. 10 min. A bit of pectin helps
keep all the ingredients incorporated
evenly: without it, they tend to separate.

3 cups fresh watermelon cubes, chilled
½ cup sugar (I used Splenda® measures like)
¼ cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
1 tablespoon liquid pectin
1 large jalapeno pepper, halved & seeded
2 teaspoons grated lime rind

Combine all but the rind in a blender
Process until pureed.
Stir in lime rind
Pour into 8 (3-ounce) ice pop molds
Freeze 6 hours or until firm
Yield: 8 servings
(serving size: 1 ice pop)
2 Points Plus each

Pro: 0.1; Carb: 19.7; Fat 0.1; Fib 0.4

JEAN Kids have so much fun with used cards cutting out the pictures and pasting them on other paper. What a neat feeling to find clothing that you have shrunk out of. You must have huge closets to have clothes still hanging around that you can't wear.:p

DONNA FAYE I have read that book and seen the previews of the movie and will surely watch it. Your little cozy's are neat looking. You are so talented. If you are satisfied with your insurance then no need to change is what I think. I don't think we will ever leave this one mainly because of the longevity and when I first signed up as a young teen driving my agent was my "Uncle Erv." No relation but he was my folks agent for as long as I could remember. When I got him as my agent he was a big mucky muck in the company and just took me on because of my folks and he knew us. Plus when my daughter got in that awful accident he didn't pull me out of the computer and mess with my account. He did give me 2 thousand dollars in cash to help me out when he visited my daughter in the hospital. He said he had taken up a collection in the office. He also made sure my rates didn't go up. When we left CA I had to change agents.:o Uncle Erv was the best ever.

GAIL Sounds like a fun outing with your daughter. I sometimes think it is the weekend when different than usual happenings are going on also. I really like the popsicles. Will actually likes them also. He isn't much for chilis and since these have just a hint of it in them to enhance the lime and watermelon he liked them. I think what that hint is "the flavor of jalapeno" and not the heat. Bless him ~ he just came in and said it is latte weather and got my coffee container and off he went. He, of course, has a Cole Car which is a double shot of espresso ~ ah but my latte also has a double shot. Any excuse will do ~ cold weather or summer heat. :D

SUSAN Staying out of the rain are you. Singing as the day progresses.

Have a great afternoon Magnolias.

Good evening, ladies! Still raining - 2 more days for sure.

We've had some horrendous lighting storms and were half way through our water zumba class today when they made us get out the pool because it was lightening agin. We were able to get back in 40 minutes later, which was into my water aerobics class so I only got about 90 minutes in today. Rain is really depressing for me.

Faye, the cozy is so cute. I make quilted ones for water bottles and coffee. I know you and Jack will be so happy when his extra work is over.

Jean, I'll be thinking of you when it's time for that tooth to be out. Kids come up with some neat things made out of old cards. I hope you like your new glasses. I had trifocals for a year then went back to no line bifocals. My eye doctor told me there isn't much difference between the two because of the bluring of the line. I hated to always be trying to find the sweet spot for my current task.

Gail, the movie days sounds great. Lucky you!

Maggie, I have some watermelon in the fridge right now so I'lll get some liquid pectin and make those pops! A grown up taste!

I need to hit the road. I have quilting bee tonight. Have a good evening.

Jean 05-18-2011 11:57 PM

Well, my evening was spent mopping water and taking wet cardboard boxes to the garage and laying the kids' school papers, pictures, etc. around to dry. Bob was watering flowers outside when all of a sudden I heard this very loud noise like a garden tiller was in the living room! I went outside and asked him if he was doing anything different and he took off for the basement. The outside faucet has a winter shut off, but for some reason, when he turned it on, the pressure caused the pipe to burst in the basement ceiling. Needless to say everything is wet that was on the floor! He turned off the water and got the pipe plugged; dug out the dehumidifier and the floor is drying slowly but surely. What a mess!

Maggie -- Your popsicles sound interesting! For some reason watermelon and jalapeno pepper doesn't sound like it should go together. ;) We don't have huge closets so store some off season clothes in plastic tubs. I just never opened some of my tubs! :o

Susan -- It's a good thing you weren't in the water when it was lightning! I did stop by the church to see if I could read my bell music with the tri part of the lens. I guess I have to get used to moving my head rather than my eyes -- not sure I like them as well as the lined lenses. :dunno: I'm sure you enjoyed your quilting bee tonight. Hope your day at work tomorrow is a good one.

I'm going to head off to bed. I'm tired after an evening of mopping water!

Later In The Evening

GOOD EVENING MAGNOLIAS

Last check in before I head to bed this day. We had a good Wed. evening Bible study and had dinner afterwards. I used quite a few of my "extra" points today so I will have to watch closely the rest of the week but I know how to do that by now. :p

JEAN Oh that is too bad about your flood. :hug:I think from now on you will probably put everything that is to sit on the floor down there in plastic boxes with tight lids on them don't ya think. I am so glad they made this bottom floor in this house water tight where we don't have any leaks at all. About the popsicles ~ I thought if I didn't like the idea of putting jalapeno pepper in it I would leave it out next time ;) if you make them ~ take your chances. :p Me, I like it for it inhances the watermelon and lime and doesn't make them "hot." Too bad we don't live closer to each other or I would let you try one. I love my blended linses glasses. Always had them even in my shades and they were pretty easy to get used to. They don't just make them far and near but blend them in several places (at least 3) so you always see just about like you would if you had perfect eyes. I do believe you will like them when you get used to them. It takes some folks longer to get used to them then others but the doc said that all would get used to them in time. ;) You will get used to them and like them. I gurantee it.

SUSAN Nope you don't want to get fried in that water. I remember having to vacate the pool several times when I was taking that lifesaving class in school. I just know you had fun at your quilting bee.

Have a good nights sleep all.

Jean 05-19-2011 09:20 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! It is a cool, cloudy, windy start to my day with rain on the way. I have WW later this morning and crafty club this afternoon. Bob left for the cabin an hour ago hoping to mow, put new doors on the shed, and do some cobweb vacuuming that I can't reach.

Maggie -- If we lived close to each other I would hire you to cook for us! I'm still having trouble with my glasses and think I will be going in to have them checked to make sure the right prescription is there.

I'd better get dressed and keep moving. It's the maid's day off! Have a terrific Thursday! :D

Jean -- from Iowa!

gma22 05-19-2011 09:26 AM

Good morning to you all. Boy, how Jack is sleeping through this noise I don't know. Sirens and honks from firetrucks, the folks next door making noise moving stuff (they move out end of month) the squirrels and birds are making a bid racket this morning and he is dead to the world already. Woohoo, river is 42.7 this morning and has to be at 42 so looks like Friday will be it then boring, sedate, predictable world here we come!

I started my girlfriend's (a different gal) socks yesterday. Oh my the colors are just gorgeous. The cuff, heel, and toe will be this deep vibrant teal color and the leg and foot is variant of yellow, teal, deep green, etc. I can't wait to get to the leg so I can see what the varigated yarn looks like knitted up. Fortune woke me up at 1 am then I couldn't go back to sleep so decided to just start on it. I have 5 pairs that have to be done before the end of the year, hers for August, then mostly in December. I also want to make some more of the cozys so I can put them in with gifts to women as well. I think they are more of a female kind of gift. Men are too macho to have something put on their drink can unless it is beer!

Thomas's award program for 5th grade is a week from yesterday so Jack is gonna take a day off. I imagine he will get a fistful little devil. He is president of the class, president of beta club, president of student council. His classmates crack me up because they do this think on facebook that has a page with all different decorations and names on it then it says things like cutest, funniest, smartest, etc like when we were in high school and did stuff for the year book. Well, he has several on his facebook page from kids and they all have him as smartest and a geek. I am so proud of him. He told me he got picked up next year for AP Math, which is cool. I can't believe he will be in middle school next year. Seems like yesterday we were traveling from Indiana to come down here for his birth.

Jean: Oh my goodness, I am so sorry. What a big mess that must be. Do you think Ernie will stay out of all the papers and stuff laying around to dry and not think they are something to play with? At least you have a handy husband and didn't have to call out a plumber! I told Jack last night that we are going to have to start repainting the condo this fall. We haven't painted since we moved in and some of it needs to be done pretty badly I think, especially the kitchen. I picked a light blue and it shows dirt and stuff way too much. I would like to put up a tile backsplash at the stove and sink too so we shall see about that. I like those new tiny glass tiles they have in different colors. You can paint the wall behind it then put these over it and the colors blend. I saw it on a diy show and it is pretty cool.

Maggie: Kelly and I went to a home show kind of deal awhile back and I tried some jalapeno jelly I liked. It was pretty darn good, but then I really like the taste of jalapenos and green chiles too. Funny, considering I am a yankee gal, must be that New Mexican husband I married rubbed off on me, ya think? ;)

Susan: They are an easy knit up, look pretty cool and harder than they are for sure and like Gail said, will make nice little gifts to put in with things and such. I have about skeins of different colors I can use and they make 4 to one of these skeins. I really like my bifocal contacts. I may end up having to go back to regular glasses when Jack retires and we lose our vision insurance because of the cost. If they would stay the same, the eye exam is $105 and the contacts for a year would be about $250. I could always go back to the cheaper distance vision contacts and wear reading glasses though. I have been going to the same lady for several years now as has Jack so she knows us. When I was there last Friday, she put up the big E and chuckled and said to me, "Can you see anything on the wall?" She knows I have terrible distance vision. I told her I know it is an E, but as for seeing it, I just know that it is there but can't read it. She said one of these days she is going to get one with a different starting letter to trick me! She is about my daughter's age and a really nice gal.

Gail: Hope this day finds you fine and dandy.

Time to have some pancakes and a pear for breakfast. Have a good day all. Faye

QuilterInVA 05-19-2011 10:49 AM

Good morning, ladies! More rain. We got some minor flooding in the area now. It is supposed to be a nice weekend, though, and that is good for I am walking the WW 5K Sunday morning. I'll go to church Saturday night, do the 5K and then we are having our church picnic Sunday afternoon.

Jean, sorry about your water disaster! What a mess. You could have Maggie do your cooking and ship it to you in dry ice. She could cook extra each day and freeze it and then once a week it would come to you. Now that I think about it, maybe I should do that. I'm tired of cooking. And it would be WW friendly. The problem you are experiencing with having to move your head to get to the right place in you glasses is just what happened to me. It takes several weeks to get used to them.

Faye, Jack will probably sleep around the clock to catch up when he's finally got this behind him. You know if you have AARP you can get a discount on eye exams, contacts and glasses as well as getting thousands of discounts on restaurants. I also get up to $200 per year from Humana for the same things. I know you have Tricare, but the AARP might be something to look into. You only have to be 50 to join and its $36 for 3 years. Gosh, Thomas will be off to college before we know it. He was just a tiny tot when I got to know you. Good thing I'm not getting any older!

Hi, Maggie and Gail!

I have applique bee tonight so more fun. Have a great day!

Maggie 05-19-2011 02:00 PM

Thankful Thursday

GOOD EARLY AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a 61 degree foggy day here in the Heartland. I am needless to say staying indoors. It rained :rain: hard last night with lots of thunder but it didn't last long but sure was enough to give our garden a good watering. It is Will’s day to work at the Museum so I will do some glass work this day. For dinner I have planned to make Parmesan Chicken Breasts and will serve it with some French cut green beans and Cottage Cheese Jell-O Salad. Will doesn't like green beans plain  but he will eat them if I spritz them with butter flavor spray and sprinkle some bacon bits on them. I can eat them plain. :cp: He absolutely will not eat :broc: and I really do like it so when I have it I serve him a different veggie. He loves beans, any kind of beans. I think that is the cowboy in him. That jell-o salad just goes with this type of chicken in our house. It is also a pot-luck pleaser and all around good recipe to have. I will type it out for you here ~ don’t remember if I gave it to y’all before or not. You know gals, if we all lived closer I would be so happy to cook for all y’all.:chef: I love cooking :stir: and am having a good time using points friendly recipes. What fun we could have enjoying meals together and yacking. Ragg Mopp is asleep and Beanie is out back and all is well.

COTTAGE CHEESE JELLO SALAD
Mix and stir until dissolved:
1 small box lime Jell-O, sugar free
1 small box lemon Jell-O, sugar free
1 Cup boiling water.
Add and stir well:
1 can evaporated fat free milk
1 medium can crushed pineapple, drained
1 pint low fat cottage cheese (2%)
Chill – sets in one hour.
SERVES 8
2 Points Plus per serving

This salad goes well with most any meat dish. It always showed up at my folks house when they had a gathering. And it will be served with baked chicken tonight. I spray the chicken breasts with olive oil Pam and then coat them in a mixture of freshly grated parmesan, Panko crumbs and spices such as lemon pepper, oregano & garlic mixed in. This mixture is also so good on oven baked boneless pork chops. Speaking of which, I need to make sure I have some on my Schwans order ~ he comes tomorrow. Usually if I don’t get an item on the list I do on line he will have it on the truck. :crossed: I got to deduct about $18 from my order total this time because they give me points when I order that add up to dollars. :smug: Works for me.

DONNA FAYE I am so happy for you and Jack that the river is going down. It won’t be long now when he will be on his regular routine and things at your house will settle down. Your little dog will be so happy as will you be also. Thomas will go far in life for I do believe he will keep his focus. Such a good idea to put those cup cozies in with gifts. You go girl. Yankee girls can like chilis too! No law against it.:D I too love jalapeno jelly! Got some homemade at a stand here last year. Sugar free too which was a definite plus.:p You know, I think I will look for a recipe and make my own.

JEAN I certainly do hope that your basement is drying out quickly and you can get your things back down there. I can just see you going through “stuff” deciding what to keep now that you have it up into your living area.:?: That is a good idea to have your glasses checked. I have had the wrong perscription in mine years back and that can be a pain. :dizzy: Literally. Get them checked.

SUSAN Oh so you will be walking the WW 5K Sunday morning ~ you go girlfriend. :cp: What fun you are having your church picnic Sunday afternoon. Do you have it at the building or go to a different location? Sounds like a good time.

GAIL How are things in your neck of the woods this day?

Well Magnolias I think I will do some exercises, get something to eat then do some glass work. Yep doin some glass work today is a good idea. Type at y'all later.

GailR 05-19-2011 03:57 PM

Just to let y'all know I'm okay. I'm on a super slooooow computer. My "good" computer is with the Geek Squad. I wanted to peek inside and say hello!

Hello. Gotta go before this one freezes up. It likes to do that.

Jean 05-19-2011 11:06 PM

"Gma" -- You will be busy knitting for awhile with 5 pair of socks and cozies. :twirly: It's hard to believe Thomas will soon be done with 5th grade and on to bigger 'n better things next year. I had to chuckle at the other kids comments about him. We took the wet boxes to the garage and laid things out on the workbench and a table. For the most part everything is dry. I pitched a lot of old newspapers and music concert programs since neither Jason nor Beth wanted them.

Susan -- It would be nice if the rain would stay away and let the swollen rivers get back to normal. We are supposed to get some rain tonight and it has cooled off quite a bit. Have fun walking in the WW 5K. I am so proud of you! :cheer:

Maggie -- I suppose your rain is coming my way. The Jell-O recipe sounds good. :T Which kind of milk do you use, condensed or evaporated? I just cut a recipe out of the paper and it takes lemon Jell-O, lemon pie filling, Cool Whip, pineapple, and fruit cocktail. I think I would use peaches instead of the cocktail though. Bob is going to fix the leaky pipe this weekend sometime. The Schwans man was supposed to come today but he didn't. :( The eye doctor called to see how I like my glasses and I told him the jury is still "out."

Gail -- You are a lady of few words today! I hope your computer is fixed soon!
