Steel Magnolias #51

Good morning gals. It is nice and mild this morning. The weather gal said last night we are about 10 degrees above normal for the year. Looks like we will continue in the 80's until midweek next week then dip into the 60's. We are supposed to get a heavy rain tomorrow, but we shall see. We are considered in drought conditions now and on fire watch everyday. I know they had a big fire about 500 acres somewhere around here a day or so ago.

Jean: I hate it when I get leg or foot cramps. The foot ones are the worst for me because they are the hardest to relax for some reason. It has been nice not having to put the furnace on. We are just the opposite and spend much more on cooling than heating. I chuckled at the "little" Jack reference because when there were two Jacks, my husband and fil, it was Jack and Jackie by his family, then when Jay was born, we called him Jay so it was Jack, Jackie and Jay by his family those his grandmother always called him little Jackie which drove me nuts. Now that Jackson is here, his dad named him Jackson because we found out when Jack's mom died and we went through her stuff that Jack's dad given name on his birth certificate was Jackson and Jay always like it. I try to reference Jay to most people that know him as Jack as Jack, but to me for the most part he is Jay and his wife calls him Jay. So if his dad were still alive it would be, Jack, Jackie, Jay and Jackson, but legally, Jackson Nolan, Jack Nolan Jr, Jack Nolan III and Jackson Nolan IV! Now are you totally in the maze struggling to get out?

Susan: Ooooooh, I love the quilt with all the different bottles and jugs. They are all quite extraordinary though. I am a color freak and love to put colors together. Well, that's a big part of our expense I imagine, the windows, which they won't let us change, insulation, which was never great, we have an attic and that makes a big draft, etc. Your condo association seems to have more brains than ours does. Yes, my grandson eats better than any child I have ever seen. I have never gone anywhere out to eat where he orders hot dogs or cheeseburgers or junk like that. In fact he doesn't order from the childs menu and hasn't for years, even then she would usually order him some type of side dish off the regular menu. Now he eats fast food like Mcd's from time to time and he likes pepperoni pizza, but for example, if we go to incredible pizza, his plate will have one piece of pizza, but stuff from the salad bar, any fresh fruit the salad bar has, etc. He bypasses the taco stuff and eats soup or will eat pasta with alfredo sauce if they have it. He gets the little carrots, or ears of corn, olives, broccoli stuff like that from the salad bar. He eats like a horse though and I got the giggles when he told me one day he was here "I have a very high metabolism." I said, "No kidding, how much do you weigh now?" He went into the kitchen and weighed himself and told me 71. He said he had just broken into the 70's recently. I asked him how tall he was and he said about 4'10" So he is a beanpole no doubt about it, but he is one healthy kid.

Maggie: We used to have surround sound, but it really started to annoy me having different noises fromt the tv sound, as each speaker picked up specific sounds and they all then blended, but if you were sitting near a speaker you heard the sound it would pick up and sometimes it was really distracting. If you want a good cry, rent "My Life as a House." It is about this guy who has basically a shack on his piece of pricey real estate on a cliff near the ocean, his neighbors hate him because it is an eyesore and they have all ritzy homes. He contracts cancer and decides to build a house, making his estranged teenage son help. His ex wife eventually gets involved and more and more people with more and more issues about it as the story goes along. It is a real tear jerker and I bawl on and off through most of the movie, but it is really good.

Well girls, I am going to peruse a craft website. I got a gift certificate for $10 off a purchase for my birthday so I want to spend it on some more sock yarn. The weather is cooling off so back to getting some socks done for Christmas for the boys I think. Have a great Saturday all. Faye

Jean 10-23-2010 10:59 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! It is a gloomy morning and I suspect the rain will hit sometime this morning. Bob and Jason are at the cabin to fix the leak in the roof. Several of the stores are having customer appreciation gimmicks today so think I will go check them out. I need a few things at Walgreens which is in the same area. My bed is made and the washer/dryer are both running so I have accomplished something!

Susan -- I just had to  at your description of Cupid stomping up the stairs. Our weather is definitely changing if Ernie's behavior is a sign -- he took a nip at me this morning and latched on to Bob's jeans with his claws out. He doesn't usually show any aggressive behavior towards Bob so we were surprised. I had no idea that a quilt would bring such a high price but after seeing your pictures I can understand why. The quilts are absolutely beautiful! I wish I could see them in person as I've never seen any with "objects" in them. Most of the quilts around here are just shape designs put together, if that makes any sense. (no pictures)

Maggie -- I know you will enjoy your "new" sounds. I asked the doctor about leg and foot cramps. His comment was that my potassium level was just fine. I don't get them often which is good. I hate having a good nights sleep interrupted!

"Gma" -- When we go back to Bob's hometown he is "Bobby" because his dad was Bob. He's not a junior but sometimes he will get mail with Jr. behind his name. I think it's nice when a family name is passed down through the generations. :) There have been a few field fires around our area -- some have been total losses including a combine or two. Have fun shopping for yarn!

I'm off to get dressed and head out. Have a great day! :D

Good afternoon, ladies! A nice day at 66 degrees.

I was down 2.2 pounds at my WI this morning so happy about that. The shelves are pretty bare at our location. We have a local chain of grocery stores, Farm Fresh, and their policy is if a price rings up wrong, you get the item for free. I wanted some Eggbeaters and was reaching for the pint container when I noticed the quart had the same price on it. I read the sign carefully to be sure it was 32 ounces. When it rang up, it was $2.00 more than the sign so i went to Customer Service and got my money back. I should go back tomorrow and see if they put up a new sign.

Just doing house cleaning today so a boring day.

Have a good one!

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

Another beautiful day here in the heartland. We got a spattering of rain last evening just enough to give the garden a slight drink. Will requested spaghetti this day so that is what we will have for dinner with some foccacia bread. I might even have some of my spaghetti sauce in the freezer which will save me some time for sure. Nothing much happening in this burg this day. Drum roll please ~ I did lose a pound on this weigh day.

DONNA FAYE Ya know if the names are spelled different they aren't juniors or II. Will thought he was a jr until he joined the Navy and found out that his name was spelled different than his fathers so they dropped the jr for it was no longer legal for him to be a jr or a II. We have our speakers ceiling hight and don't get that irritation factor plus they have improved the speakers so much from the system we had years back.

JEAN Gotta get those leaks fixed or you have a mess next time you visit the cabin. Good thing they are tackeling them now. What kind of give-aways do the stores there do? My doc said that potassium levels can fluctuate in my system causing cramps if they get too low. But go by what your doc tells you for he knows your system.

SUSAN :bravo::cp::carrot: for that 2# loss. You go girlfriend and you will be at goal soon. Your quilts are absolutely georgeous. You have a great talent there for they are works of art. I have gotten some great deals through the years from mistakes printed in papers for a price of an article or food. One time there was a counter top rotisserie that was marked for $25 instead of the $250 it was supposed to be. I brought 5 of them to the counter, planning to give them as gifts, and put the proper amount to cover them on the counter and the clerk laughed and said that is not nearly enough to cover what you have in the cart. I pulled out my sale paper and he gasped. Said he would go get the manager and I smiled and nodded. The manager came and said sell them to the lady and be prepared to sell all the rest of them at that price since it is in the paper. I called some of my friends and we wiped them out. Life is good.

Time for me to go get some lunch inside of me. Type at y'all later.

gma22 10-24-2010 08:21 AM

Good morning! It is lovely outside this morning again nice and mild.

I heard Jack moving around so I imagine he is up. I think he stayed up late watching college football. He was downstairs watching football for 6 hours then I grumbled a bit and he went upstairs and watched it. I do not see how men can watch hours of football, but then I can watch hours of things he probably thinks I am nuts to watch.

Maggie: congrats on the loss!:carrot:

Jean: What does that usually mean with Ernie, snow, cold weather, or just some drastic change? I have to get to one of the Walgreen clinics and get my flu shot next week sometime. If I go to one of their clinics, I pay only my co-pay if I get one at a Walgreen without a clinic where they just have a table set up, I pay like $30!!! My co-pay is $12 so I go with the clinic. They are always out of shots at my doctor's so I don't ever bother going there.

Susan: Good for you. Great loss!:bravo: I didn't tell you the story about Thomas. I bought a couple boxes of full bars awhile back because I wanted to try them out. I was upstairs taking a shower the other evening while Thomas was here and came down and he was munching down on one!!! I told him what they were for and asked him how they tasted and he said pretty good. I told him he had to drink a lot of water or he would get constipated because of what they were made of. I had him drinking water all night because I did't want him to go home and have any problems. He has scared me on Wed because he went to the bathroom and was in there at least 20 minutes. I had gotten concerned and got up to check to make sure he was ok when I heard the toilet flush and hear him wash his hands. Well, out he comes with his Ipod touch! I told his mom I figured that was the new version of a magazine.

You gals have a nice Sunday. I will talk to you soon. Faye

QuilterInVA 10-24-2010 11:49 AM

Good morning, ladies! A beautiful Sunday heading for the 70s.

Still doing housework and then I have my bible study to do for tomorrow. I put a beef roast, potatoes and carrots in the crockpot so a good supper will be waiting when I get done cleaning.

Faye, I just wonder how all these IPODS, IPADS, MP3, etc. devices are going to have an effect on their hearing. We may have a nation of totally deaf older people with tatoos and piercings when they get older. LOL. Do those Full Bars work? I've seen them but never bought any.

Maggie, I think I need to read the ads in the paper a little better! I'd love to get a deal like you did.

Hi, Jean!

Have a great day.

Maggie 10-24-2010 04:55 PM

Sunny Sunday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is another beautiful day here in the Heartland. I can know that fall is here for we didn't have to have the furnace nor the ceiling fans going in the church building this day. JD was here and I don't think we will see much more of him when the voiting is overwith. His man will be going to DC and we don't yet know if JD gets to go with him or not. We went out to eat at a place called a sports bar that had TV's going all over the place even in the floor showing football, car racing and other sporting events. The food wasn't that great so I don't think we will be going there often. I didn't eat the bread on my steak sandwich and just had a couple onion rings and drank lots of water with lime in it and had a good time gabbing with Will and JD. Got a nice SF/FF espresso latte on the way home and that gave me a nice buzz.

SUSAN UM UM I can smell that roast cooking. I have found quite a few real deals that have been mispriced in the papers through the years. I like those buy one item and get another free. If it doesn't say of equal or less value you got em. In fact you could buy a coffee maker and as your free item a flat screen TV.

DONNA FAYE I am glad that Will and I have the same taste in programs. We, in fact, don't watch much TV to begin with but when we do we don't watch just any ole thing. We are both avid readers. We like a good movie on occasion so that surround sound is marvelous for that.

JEAN Wat ya got goin dis day?

Have a wonderful afternoon my Magnolia friends. Type at ya later.

Jean 10-24-2010 05:09 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It has finally begun to rain and is such a fine mist I can hardly see it. We need it. We've spent most of the day at church! Bob had to sing and I went to early church, but stayed during the coffee time to put my bids on different items for the TTT auction (time, treasure, talent) at 12:30; there was a soup and sandwich lunch at 11:30. (no point in going home then!) I bought a set of tv trays, a jar of homemade raspberry jam, a sunset picture of the "old" lake view from an area that now has a waterpark on it, a set of computer greeting cards, homemade salsa, an 18k gold leaf from CO, and a small bench made out of barn siding for the deck. I donated the coffee maker that I thought I had to have and didn't like! The money earned is split between the budget and mission giving. Usually the kids will volunteer to rake leaves or wash windows but I didn't see any of that this year. It's a fun time and for a good cause.

Susan -- :congrat: on losing 2.2#s! I knew you would be in control this past week! :cp: I'm bad about paying attention to price signs in the stores. I need to pay better attention. I cut out coupons and then forget them or else they are buried in my purse. Your supper sounds delicious . . . I can almost smell it!

Maggie -- :congrat: on being down another pound! Onward and downward is the name of the game! :cheer: I mainly wanted to go to the jewelry store that is celebrating their 100th anniverary. You could buy a balloon for $10 and take a chance on winning a gemstone. I had a birthday coupon and saved $50 on a gold chain for a diamond pendant I won a few years ago. I also had a birthday coupon from the Hallmark store for 20% off my entire purchase so I loaded up on greeting cards, a couple of Christmas gifts, and a candle for me. Actually I was rather disgusted with my doctor! First of all he isn't nearly as thorough as my previous doctor was: I asked about the leg cramps as well as 2 "major" drug interactions that my pharmacist advised me to discuss with him. He blew them both off saying not to worry about it. You got a really GREAT deal on the rotisseries! I'll bet that store manager checked his sale ads for awhile! The ads around here will say the 2nd item is equal or lesser value than the first one you buy.

"Gma" -- Bob is watching football right now and can watch game after game if they are "good" games. That's why I'm on the computer! ;) Our Walgreens sign outside says flu shots are $29.99. I wondered if they bill the insurance companies for you if you don't get prescriptions there. I get mine next week at the hospital. I had to  at T and his Ipod in the bathroom. I've never been one to read but have been in bathrooms that look like a small library.

I need to keep going on laundry since I didn't finish yesterday . . . and probably won't today either. Hope you all are enjoying a relaxing day. :D

Jean -- from :rain: Iowa!

gma22 10-25-2010 11:13 AM

Good morning to you all. We had rain all day yesterday and we appreciated it because we are so very dry. We had a thunderstorm last night which upset the dog for awhile. He would bark when the thunder would boom just once.

Susan: They can't do worse than music cranked up in cars and going to concerts which you come away from half deaf I think. Thomas doesn't use the ear buds much, unless he is watching videos and someone in the room is watching something else. He only wore them once at my house and he borrowed mine because he hadn't brought his. I just have the Nano and have music and books on it. I mostly listen to books on it. If I can't sleep listening to a book will put me to sleep. They do fill you up if you eat them and then drink a lot of water.

Maggie: We got to a restaurant here in town that has a lot of tvs all over, but most of them are tuned in to the same thing.

Jean: Jack wants Boise State to be ranked #1 since they are undefeated but no one is ranking that way. He watches the football games mainly to watch the teams left that are undefeated get beat! lol The school really isn't getting a fair shake from the BCS but then they are all about money and the money is where the big well known football schools are.

Not much else going on. I slept in just a bit this morning after getting up and feeding Fortune and such. I hope you have a great week this week. Faye

Maggie 10-25-2010 02:16 PM

Monday Monday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a beautiful fall day here in the Heartland. Ragg Mopp is at the groomer getting a bath and all is well here on the home front. I have decided to make Beef Stroganoff for dinner tomorrow evening when we have guests. It is an easy dish to make and so yummy. I have a wonderful WW recipe that is what I have used for years and it has become a family favorite. I must admit I have tweeked it a bit and added some items that didn't change the calorie count though but only made it better. :p If anyone wants the recipe I will get it to you. Will has gone to the doctor for his knee. I imagine it is just ole arthur visiting for he did have injuries when he was in the rodeo in his younger years. Old injuries do come back to haunt one. Anyway I just hope a pill will suffice for he won't have an operation ~ says he won't anyway. I think he would rather have a bit of pain and not be operated on.

DONNA FAYE I am so pleased for you that the rain finally came. I do hope it is the kind that soaks in with a gentle pitter patter. We are so thankful that we have gotten it regularly to water our garden and grass. We could have gone away and our garden would have been nature watered for us.

JEAN Sounds like you bought some neat things at that sale. That sunset pictue sounds like it would be a delight to have of that area. What a find. And home made salsa ~ yum. And that bench ~ OH wow you got some neat stuff for sure. I have a gold leaf but don't know where it is from. Just a leaf dipped in gold but pretty. Very pretty.

SUSAN You getting some rain like the rest of us? Hope your day is going well with you.

Type at y'all later. Have a great Moody Monday.

QuilterInVA 10-25-2010 04:50 PM

Good evening, ladies! Storms and 77 degrees today. I'm glad for the rain. Scott aerated and reseeded my front lawn Saturday.

I had water aerobics and Silversneakers this morning and have been working on the outline for my One Block Wonder class in January. These things have a way of creeping up on us.

I need to get some supper going and get ready for bible study so this will be short today.

Jean 10-25-2010 06:41 PM

Good Afternoon/Evening, Flowers! It's been a gloomy windy day in my neighborhood. I went to work at the church this morning and the treasurer was using the computer I usually use so helped sort through some of the auction things that still need to be picked up. The secretary, minister, and treasurer were going to have a meeting so I "babysat" the phone and did my posting on her computer. I wasn't finished by lunch time so Bob offered to take me "out" for a sandwich and I went back to work. I finished and balanced again! Yea for my side! I had a coffee date midafternoon so haven't been home very long. I need to declutter the ounters before Bob gets home from a meeting.

"Gma" -- It sounds like our weather is in the same pattern formation. We haven't had the thunder though. I'm not a football fan so either read while Bob watches or get on the computer. I wish they would show the half time activities rather than the announcers -- we can listen to the announcers but don't have to see them.

Maggie -- You recipe sounds delicious! :T I hope Will's knee pain is something he can live with rather than have surgery. Mine aches once in awhile but seems to have no pattern to follow. My gold leaf is a "see through" outline and I thought it would be pretty on the Christmas tree.

Susan -- You had a busy morning! How many different quilting classes/clubs do you belong to? My stepsis was VERY impressed with your pictures! Enjoy your Bible study tonight.

I'm off to declutter so it looks like I accomplished something today! Have a nice evening! :D

Jean -- from Iowa!

gma22 10-26-2010 07:56 AM

Good morning to you all! It is extremely windy, rainy and balmy this morning. The ac hasn't kicked on in the morning in a couple weeks but it has been on all morning already. It is just plain weird weather outside.

I got tickled at a friend of Thomas's. She posted on Facebook this "tag" box where she answered questions like who is the prettiest person you know, who makes you laugh the most, etc. On her "who is the smartest person you know" she said Thomas. That got me to thinking about something he and I talked about. He just got his first report card and got all A's again. He has had straight A's for every report card. I asked him if he had ever had trouble with any subject that he had to really work at to understand or do the work. He thought about it and told me no. Wow, what would that be like? He told me he just got into the beta club, which he told me meant good conduct, good attendence and you had to get nothing lower than a B on your report card. He said he thought it was unfair though because if someone transferred in from another school district, they could have terrible grades at the other school but then only had to have one semester of all a' and b's to get in but kids who had been in the district their whole lives had to maintain all a's and b's for their entire school experience up to fifth grade. I tend to agree with him.

Jean: Another round of perfect accounting, yeah for you! I get irritated at the sports announcing too. They are all such egotists it seems like. They love to hear themselves talk about what they think. Jack watched ESPN the other night to get the current BCS standings and they spent 15 minutes babbling about what each announcer thought. Who the heck cares about you? I only have to put up with it on Saturdays in the fal and winter and once in awhile college basketball, though since Bob Knight retired Jack doesn't watch college basketball much. He does like college football though and that starts around 11 am on Saturday and goes all day into late evening. I watched 6 hours then griped and he went upstairs.

Susan: Hope your classes went well. I have got to get my act together and get a daily exercise plan going. The problem I am having is intestinal cramping when I walk any distance. I can put up with backache and feet and stuff when I exercise until the weight comes off, but the cramping does me in. I think I am going to start doing chair exercises for awhile and see what that does. I don't know whether losing weight will help with the cramping or not. It may be something I am going to have to live with, I don't know.

Maggie: Jack is now to the point with the other knee he comes home and puts an ice pack on it and takes keteroac I think is what it is called. He was given it for his other knee. He has an appt the 3rd to see the doctor and I imagine they will put him on a round of steroids, but he thinks it is the same issue with the meniscus he had with the right knee. If so, he will have it worked on after the first of the year and his hand will have to wait.

Have a good Tuesday everyone. I hope to get some housework done today. Faye

Jean 10-26-2010 10:15 AM

Good Morning, Flowers! I have a haircut this morning and this afternoon I'm going back to church to take off glue gunk from the candles we will light for the memorial service. The talented secretary is designing a new name sticker to put on the candle jars. It is terribly windy, rainy, and gloomy here today. The weeks of sunshine spoiled us, that's for sure.

"Gma" -- I've known students who seem to just breeze through each class without exerting much effort. They can read, or hear, something once and it's locked into their memory bank. I hope Thomas continues to enjoy his classes as one is never too old to learn. Our schools should give awards for good conduct! The police have started making regular visits to the elementary building now; a student brought a knife to school and threatened a teacher when she asked him to give it to her. He later claimed it was part of a game and he just wanted to show it to his friends. Bobby Knight was a show all by himself! I only saw him have :tantrum: a couple of times but thought he wasn't a very good role model for his players. I feel for Jack and his knee pain.

Maggie and Susan -- What is on your agendas for today? :dunno:

I hope you all has a GREAT day and remember to :D!

Jean -- from Iowa!

QuilterInVA 10-26-2010 02:00 PM

Good afternoon, ladies! Rainy and 72 degrees today.

I have work, the Y (weights), and River Country Quilters on my agenda for today. Fun! Having dinner at Cinco de Mayo. I don't care much for Mexican so will eat something before I go and then get something small.

Faye, I feel so sorry for Jack with his knees and hands. I don't know how he keeps going all the time. It doesn't sound good to get intestinal pain when you walk. Is it near the site of your scar from your surgery? Maybe you are developing adhesions or a hernia. I pretty much went through school like Thomas. I don't have a photographic memory but close to it. If I read something, I can remember it when I want. Once I read a quilt or knitting pattern, I can teach it to someone else with no problem. If I've read a book or heard a tape, I only need to hear/read the first line again and I can remember the whole story. Of course, this is offset by me not remembering names or what I ate this morning. LOL. We didn't start getting letter grades until 4th grade but after that it was all As except gym which I hated and got Cs in.

I'll come back and finish this later.

gma22 10-26-2010 02:18 PM

I just peeked in here to see what was going on. Boy we have had the wind and rain today. It comes in waves and you think it is over than it comes back for more. We dropped 20 degrees in 10 minutes and it is upper 50's now.

Jean: Why is there glue on candles? I am glad Thomas is in county schools here. They aren't great but sure better than city. He goes to jr high next year so they have to make a decision about private or public school for him.

Susan: Thomas has one of THE most fantastic recalls I have ever seen. He remembers everything he ever sees, reads or whatever. His Nonny on the other hand had trouble memorizing her times tables as a kid and any memorization for school was hard for me until I found the answer. If I can put something to music I can learn anything. Jack laughs at me because I can recall the lyrics to almost any song I have heard. I learned the preamble to the constitution using the song from those old cartoon tv spots they used to put at the end of the cartoons "Schoolhouse Rock." When I was in college I memorized stuff by putting it to music and made the dean's list that way. I got a big chuckle out of you hating gym and now you workout more than all three of us combined. I only hated gymnastics in gym. That was impossible for me.

Well, onward and upward as I am getting laundry done. I gave up cleaning with the wet weather as Jack will just track stuff in on my clean floors. Guess it will hold out one more day. See you tomorrow! Faye

Maggie 10-26-2010 02:33 PM

Titilating Tuesday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

Not much happening here in the Heartland area this day. I have the ingredients that go in the crock pot for the Stroganoff and it will be ready at dinner time. Our guests won't be able to make it afterall so I will have some to freeze for a later dinner since I am doubleing the recipe. I cut up the meat and all the veggies and measured out the spices last night so all I would have to do today was mix it together with the liquids in the crockpot. I love it when a plan comes together.

SUSAN I got all A's even in PE :) because I took classes in PE that I liked. I took swimming. And Pep Club was also considered PE. They separated the top grade earners out back then and put us all in the same classes and taught us college classes and they called us the X students. The X was for x-cell. I don't think they can do that now days :( which is too bad. I don't even think PE is required now days either. If you went nowdays you would have gotten straight A's. Schools on the West coast were the best back then and now they are the worst. I certanly am not even close to having a photograph memory ~ I'm just a plodder I guess.

JEAN Hope your haircut turns out satisfactory this time. How do those candle glasses get gunk on them? Is it from the name stickers?

DONNA FAYE You can keep your wind thank you for we have enough of our own here. Your grandson will get good grades through out his schooling I would imagine. That is neat you can rember by putting things to music. Clever way to learn and retain.

I need to get somethings done this day so I will say good day  Type at y'all later.

gma22 10-27-2010 08:52 AM

Good morning all. It is significantly cooler this morning than it was yesterday but it still isn't really fall weather. The leaves are falling, but slowly so it may be November before we can get them cleaned up for the year. The deck is kind of a mess at the moment, but it is way too wet now to do anything with it. I imagine in the next couple weeks we will have to get out there and attack it and clean it up for winter.

Yesterday was flea treatment day for Fortune, which I always hate. You would think they could find a way to put it on the dog without it being such a darn mess. It isn't so bad I imagine for a dog that has longer hair, but we keep Fortune's coat shorter so it always tries to run all over the place. I did a fair job yesterday though by applying it in small amount across the neck area instead of one area alone. He also got his weekly clean the teeth bone this morning. I try and do that along with brushing his teeth so he doesn't have to have them cleaned because frankly it is really expensive. They put him to sleep and clean them and it costs about $150! I have only had to have it done once and that was years ago so guess I do an ok job with his teeth now.

Watched a cute movie on one of the movie channels this morning, "Old Dogs" with Robin Williams and John Travolta. Most of the humor in the movie was the last few minutes though, but it was a cute family film I think.

Nothing else much going on here. Jack actually came home last night without his knee hurting. I am hoping they don't jerk him around but do an MRI right away to see what is causing the problem because I don't think it is arthritis. I think he tore the meniscus on the other knee as the pain is in the same area and not at the joint. I guess we will see next week when he goes in.

Have a great hump day all. I am going to hunt up some breakfast and I think work on that other sock today and get it done so I can block them. Faye

Good afternoon, ladies! Its 81 degrees and climbing.

Today was just the Y and after I finish this I am going to start getting my projects ready for retreat.

Faye, I thought about you. I had Chili Rellenos and they were made the way you like, not puffed up. They were delicious.

Jean, you asked how many days I have quilting - here goes:

1st Thursday - First Thursday Bee
2nd Monday - Bella's Belles Applique
2nd Tuesday - Evening Peninsula Piecemakers Quilt Guild
2nd Friday - Day PPQG
3rd Monday - Ladies of the Evening Applique
3rd Wednesday - Baltimore Beauties Applique
3rd Friday - Bella Quilt Shop Lock In
4th Tuesday - River Country Quilters
4th Friday - English Paper Piecing Bee (we haven't come up with a name yet)

And, of course, my friends and I get together just for fun to quilt occasionally. I'm teaching One Block Wonders (a quilt pattern) January 8th. I used to teach a lot but am just getting back into it again. I get $150 - $275 for a full day class (9-4) plus mileage and lunch. There aren't too many of us who teach hand quilting so they come to me for that every once in awhile.

Maggie, we didn't have any choice in PE. There was one class and in high school it was taught by a woman who was very tiny, old (she hung onto the back of a chair for support most of the class) and mean. 2 days a week we had to tap dance. Can you picture an overweight teen tap dancing? That was me.

Have a good day.

Wonderful Wednesday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a chilly day in the 60's this day in the Heartland. Yesser it is fall. Supposed to have frost on the pumpkin tonight. Our furnace is set for 69 and it had to come on for the first time this season and burn off the dust it collected in its parts over the year. I lit a nice candle in my office and that is what I smell instead of dust burning. :p Will had to do some errands out and about and brought home some of those delicious carnitas tacos. Yumey lunch for sure. Ragg Mopps groomer is going to give me some recipes to make him some treats that don't have any "bad" for him stuff in them.

DONNA FAYE We give Ragg Mopp meds that keep fleas, ticks and mosquitos away. We get the kind that we put drops on his neck right behind his head and down the back bone parting the hair and getting it on his skin. Then we give him his tasty treat that is for heart worm so he doesn't get that horrible dog malady. I would hate to tackle bathing him though.:o His groomer does such a nice job of that.;) I am a firm believer if you have a pet ~ take good care of it and I believe you feel the same way about your Fortune.

SUSAN You have quite a schedule there ~ keeps you young. Believe me I do feel blessed that I had such wonderful schools to attend in those days. I don't recall ever having a mean teacher. Strict but not mean. The strict ones kept me in line and the not so strict ones didn't know exactly what to do with me. I'll never forget the time my typing teacher took me and my desk outside on the covered walkway and had me do my days lesson with kids walking up and down it. All our class doors opened to the outside and it was single story type building. Outside was a cement walk next to the bulding and grass on the other side of the walk. Well I finished my assigments quickly and by the time the teacher came out to fetch me I was merily talking with a bunch of my friends all sitting on the grass. My teacher thought I couldn't do my work with so may distractions and wanted to prove a point but it didn't get proven by me. From then on to get me out of the classroom he put me in his office where all the fun machines were. All by myself I was for that whole period. It was the last class of the day right after swimming. But when the vice principal who was the Girls League sponsor found out about that little arrangement she asked how long it took to do my work and when I told her she said she would send a monitor after me to come to her office for the rest of the period. It was much more fun hanging out in the Vice Principals office for sure. I loved school.

JEAN What are you up to this day?

I need to check on some stuff I have going so I am going. Type at y'all later.

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's another day of strong winds, clouds, and cold. I left early (for me) this morning to get my nails done. The shop has all Asians working there and I don't think they had the heat turned on yet. It was cold in there! :brr: Then I went to church to help with the newsletter which wasn't ready so worked on some Sunday School things for awhile. The heat isn't on there either and I was so cold! Bob called about lunch so we went out for a sandwich and HOT coffee. I have bell practice at 5, and then the "ringers" are going out to eat after practice. One of our older members has decided to retire after 30 years because she and her husband leave for AZ in Nov. and don't return until April. She feels guilty asking anyone to sub for that long. Needless to say I didn't get much done on the home front. I did clear off the kitchen counter this morning before I left!

Susan -- You are one busy quilter! When you do the applique, do you sew the design on top of the "finished" quilt or is it sewn in as part of the main layer? Does that question make any sense? :dizzy: I'll bet you are an excellent teacher! It's nice to have some extra spending money.

Maggie -- My haircut is "ok" this time. I'm trying to 2nd guess when I will either need a cut (no curl left at all) or need a perm. We are going on a 2 day bus trip for a "Kansas City Christmas" the first weekend in Dec. which is when I should be needing a perm. With the humidity lower my hair is limper. :( The candle "gunk" is residue left from peeling the name labels off the candle container glass.

"Gma" -- The church candles are in tall glass containers and the secretary designs the names, a cross, stained glass window, etc. on large sticky labels. I'm wondering if we take the labels off asap if they will leave as much goo behind. :dunno: I had to chuckle at you brushing Fortune's teeth. I imagine a dog would tolerate that better than a cat! I'm glad Jack's knee seems to be better; I can tell if I sit at a wrong angle cuz I pay for it later.

I'm off to change clothes! Have a wonderful rest of the day and evening! :D

Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is trying hard to shine between the clouds, still a little windy but nothing like the last 3 days, and it's COLD at 31 degrees! :brr: I'm just not mentally ready for winter and don't think I ever will be. I was cold all day yesterday and finally warmed up when I went to bed with my socks on! Today is WW and afterwards a trip to the grocery store and maybe WM. It's supposed to rain for Halloween night but I don't have anything for trick or treaters; we have 2 new little ones living on our block now so might have them stop by.

I need to do some laundry -- my basement floor has had evidence of being wet around the drain a couple times. Bob finally figured out the sump pump "thingy" was slimy from soap scum and wasn't going high enough to pump out washer water. It's fixed now so Ernie won't have to get his feet wet when he goes to his bathroom.

Enjoy your day! :D
