Default Steel Magnolias #50

Good morning ladies. It is beautiful here this morning, not cold, not hot just right at Goldilocks would have said. We still have gotten no rain and boy do we need it. Jack was looks at Google Earth at the new Hoover Dam project that was just dedicated this weekend and he said Lake Mead is really low. You gotta figure all those people and hotels and stuff in Las Vegas is sooner or later going to make a difference and they have have less than usual rain and last years snow from the mountains was a lot less run off too.

Got the commissary stuff done. We got there half an hour before they open (they let in retirees half an hour early though they can't check out until opening time) and it was so quiet and still. Only a handful of us old codgers in there. We got through and checked out and boy was the party beginning. I went out to get in the car and the parking lot was half full and people were streaming in. That was about 10:30 and they open at 10 on Sundays so it was going to be a busy day there. Glad we got in and got out.

Susan: That's why I don't sell my knitting. Say someone wants a plain hat. Unless I buy the really cheapo yarn like Walmart brand or something, which I will not do, it probably costs me $8-10 for yarn depending on what I get. Most people that sell their stuff either calculate the time involved or double the price of the yarn and whatever else they have to buy to go into the project. Now who wants to pay $20 for a stupid knit hat? So, I either make a gift or occasionally will make something for like my sister and charge very little (I made something for her dd a couple years ago and she still owes me the $50 but I just gave up on that) so you see it is better if you just don't do it. Sort of like loaning money to family or friends, either give them a gift of money if they need it or say you can't don't loan. Surest way to harm relationships if the money is not paid back. I had an absolute stranger ask me if I could make a baby blanket for her because she had seen one I made for a family member. When I told her what it would cost (the yarn for this particular blanket cost me $75) she blanched and looked at me like I was nuts.

Jean: Does Bob usually help the farmers with planting too? I thought I remembered you talking about it sometimes. My kooky grandson posted on facebook a picture of a plate of food and labeled it "my vittles." lol He is a nut. His parents went to see "Wicked" at I think the Orpheum last night so he was probably at Nana and Pops last night unless he went with. He isn't going trick or treating anymore so I imagine we will arrange to get him him Halloween goodies sometime the week of Halloween. The stuff has shipped and should be here in the next day or so. I had Jackson's popcorn stuff shipped directly to him but his tshirt shipped here so will just send it in the mail to him. It sure would be lots easier if they both lived here!lol Does Ian play soccer? I can't remember whether you said he did or not. I remember you going to games, but I can't remember what they were for.

Maggie: I don't keep candy in the house either or we will sit and eat the stuff until it is gone. We do better with full size candy bars than we do with the little ones. You just keep eating those like they are potato chips and suddenly you have scarfed down half a bag. I still the the individual packages of those little cookies and such for a treat.

I have a muscle knot in my shoulder I got I guess from wiping down the car after we had it washed on Saturday. It bothered me all weekend and I have slept with a heating pad on it and my neck all weekend. I finally broke down last night and took one of Jack's Flexerils which is a muscle relaxant. It will make you real loopy, for me it takes awhile then makes me sleepy. The knit is still there but at least I got some sleep. It is better today than it has been so I am hoping with a little more working it out and heat it will loosen up.

Well I guess I should get out of here and get some breakfast and work done. Did you see Barbara Billingsly passed away? Wow, Beaver's mom, that takes you back. Have a good start to your week everyone! Faye

Talking Marvelous Monday

GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It's fixin' to be a beautiful day here in the Heartland. I didn't make the Cowboy Beans I was going to for potluck but have all the ingredients so will make them today and freeze some packets of it. After the party Saturday evening I was just not feeling like cooking meat and letting it cool before going to bed. I have the sausage all out of the casings and rolled up in little balls and the bacon cut in one inch pieces ready to cook and the hamburger thawing in the fridge. The cans of beans are lined up on the counter and the crock pot is waiting with it's bag inserted and on the counter. Life is good. There is a certain part of society that want my glass houses and if they ask to have one or more made I quote them a price and if they want them built then a deal is struck. I mostly get my materials paid for and enjoy building the buildings. I make lots of items for give away also. The places that keep my cards on their counter know it is a business and the folks who call know that and we work out a price. I have never, as of yet, had anyone renig or balk at the price quoted to them. Like I say, they are surely a speciality item and it takes a certain type person that really wants one. Like I have a lady that wants some boxes made for Christmas gifts ~ she knows the price. When I did huge windows I requested half the money down and that usually paid for my material. It was an insurance that if they didn't come back to pick up the finished window I wouldn't be out any and would be able to sell it elsewhere sometime. But like I said, never had anyone fall short of the deal. I have even sold a few items of clothing I have made. When I was a teenager in high school one of the teachers asked me to borrow one of my dresses I had made. She wanted to wear it to a Saturday tea. Then around Christmas time she asked me to make her a velvet shell to go with a satin skirt she wanted to wear at a party. I made a black Italian velvet shell lined with silk and she was delited and paid me handsomely. She was my drama teacher. My mother had a wonderful sewing machine and I learned to use it at an early age and to pick out quality material for a project. She said that if I was going to spend the time to make something, make it out of quality materials. She taught me to make things right and I made a lot of my clothes and always got compliments from my friends. I remember making the Admirals daughter an outfit. I also remember the time when Will wanted a linnen sport jacket and we found one for $600 in a catalogue and I make the crack that I could make one just like it for a lot less money then that. He said get your coat, we are going to the fabric store. It was coming up on winter and the store just had enough cream color fabric on the bolt to make it. It turned out so well next spring we went and got some more linnen and I made him one a shade darker, more like light coffee. I had some buttons made of bone that went great on them. Nice looking, lined with shoulder pads even. He got lots of compliments when he wore them which put a smile on my face. I don't sew much anymore. Make a doll or two but have not tackeled a big project of late. More into doing my glass works. Life is good. Graceous sakes I do go on don't I.

DONNA FAYE You are so smart to hit the commissary early. Hope you found all you went there for. Rub some of that stinky ointment into that sore shoulder and get it working again. Well they do make ointment nowdays that doesn't have a bad odor. Hope all is well with you soon.

JEAN & SUSAN Things going your way this day?

All y'all have a wonderful week coming up. Smile, life is good.

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's another beautiful fall day in my corner of the world. I've been to church; ended up leaving a "problem" for the secretary to figure out. Somehow one of the members was deleted from the contribution list and I know they are "givers." Did a quick project for the pastor, stopped for a coffee special at Walgreen's, and headed home. I have another get together this afternoon so need to change clothes for that.

Susan -- I am to admit I found 2 pair of slacks that still have the price tags on them. At least they are the size I am wearing now; I wonder if I bought them tight thinking I would eventually fit into them. I haven't bought fabric in years so was surprised when you mentioned prices. Is "real" quilting fabric different from regular cotton fabric?

Maggie -- You were a smart cookie to give JD the treats! Will you have many trick or treaters? Cowboy beans . . . ! My mom was quite a seamstress as was my grandma who sewed for other people. I think that's why I had so little patience with sewing; I felt like mine never measured up.

"Gma" -- Is the commissary busier on Sunday rather than Saturday? I know that business accounts can shop early at SAM's before the rest of the general public. The only time Bob will help in the spring is if machinery breaks down or his friend needs help with something else. He doesn't want to be responsible for crooked rows. Ian played baseball last summer, and is really hooked on that right now. I know soccer has become popular around here but I'm not sure about where he lives. I'm hoping he will take up the violin rather than play football! (Jason ate, slept, and lived for football from 5th - 12th grades.)

I'm off to brush my teeth and change clothes. Enjoy the rest of your day!

Jean -- from Iowa!

Good afternoon, ladies! 68 degrees and sunny.

I went to water aerobics and Silversneakers this morning. I'm going to my applique bee tonight. We had a substitute teacher for Silversneakers and she had a whole different routine that was somewhat harder. I have a feeling I'll be feeling it tomorrow.

Faye, There have been "wars" over water rights in the West. When the farmers and ranchers depend on it for irrigation and animals and the cities divert it, tempers flare. Are you going to volunteer at T's school this year?

Maggie, I used to make all my clothes from 7th grade until I lost weight. I made Stan a 3-piece suit and 3 other suits over the years, many shirts and pants. He loved for me to make him things. When I went to Stretch and Sew, I made him underwear to match all my dresses. Now I might hem a pair of pants, a vest, or a jacket. Not very often. LOL!

Jean, quilting fabric is a heavier cotton than that used in most garmets, but not as heavy as twill. Sounds like you have had a busy day already.

Have a great day.

Talking Back At Ya

HOWDY AGAIN THIS DAY MAGNOLIAS

I am a happy camper. A gut wagon has moved into town and now we can get authintic Mexican food. There hasn't been one of those here since we moved here and the restaurants aren't a bit like we were used to back in CA and TX. Of course we had lunch there. AH the carne asada is great there. Hope they can make it a go here in this town since they are so good. Makes me think of the food we got at the place on the Avenue called Maggies out in CA. We talked to some of the folks standing around waiting for their order and they all agree that none of the restaurants in this town that claim to be Mexican are good and they are happy that this Taquieria Rosales has parked here.

SUSAN When I was being retrained after my injury at work one of the things that was suggested to me to become was a Ditch Rider. That is a person that checks that the water is staying where it is supposed to flow. Some folks divert it when it isn't their turn. Well I opted to NOT learn that job because I knew that a few of the riders had been shot right off thier horse doing that job. Ditch riders are not popular among the folks. I didn't want to be a copter pilot either.

JEAN Are you staying home this Christmas or visiting relatives? Just curious thinking about it. How nice you shrunk down into those new pants. I am thinking about an outfit I really want but don't want it to fit the size I am so I will order it in a smaller size and shrink into it. I want to get it now for I don't think it will be available in a year or two.

I need to go check on the done-ness of the cooking meat. Type at y'all later.

Good morning ladies! Guess who I have at my house today? I got a call from Kelly yesterday asking me if her father had mentioned that Thomas wanted to come for a couple days this week because it was his fall break. Well of course Jack said not a word to me, but anyhow, his dad brought him this morning and he will be here until Thursday afternoon. He has music lessons Thursdays so has to be home early.

Maggie: I used to make gift baskets when I lived in Indiana and would ask for a deposit. Like you, that way if I got stuck with it, I at least had something I could sell to someone else and not be stuck with it. We have a lot of mom and pop Mexican restaurants owned by Mexicans and they are ok, but Jack and I really like a chain restaurant here called Abuelos. The only thing they make I don't like is their chile relleno and I never find it anywhere like the way they made it in New Mexico. Here they use poblanos instead of green chiles and batter them, which I hate. When we lived in Las Cruces and El Paso they would use green chiles, stick cheese inside and roll in corn meal and fry them. I like them that way. I don't like that puffy batter then they drowned it in sauce. There is a Mexican restaurant in the Palms casino in Las Vegas called Gardunos. The family is from Hatch New Mexico and gets all their ingredients from Hatch, which is famous for their green chiles. We always make a trip in there at least once to eat.

Susan: I guess I never told you guys what happened to Jack's car. He called one day and said the car was acting up like it did before so I sent a tow to him and they towed it home. It is sitting in the garage for the time being because it is one of two things, it either threw another spark plug like it did a couple years ago and they would have to go in and put in something to keep it in place or the same one came out again. Now if it is a different one, it will cost about $800 to fix, if it is the same one, there is a whole section of the motor where the spark plugs all are that will have to be replaced and that will cost BIG bucks. So, until we have the money to have it fixed if it is the big problem, it sits in the garage for now. We don't want it towed to the place to have it looked at, find out it is the big price repair then have to pay to have it towed back home if we don't have the money at the moment. We would then have to have it towed back again to have it fixed when we had the money. It is too close to all the holidays to fork out a possible $3000 so we will just wait until after the first of the year. Jack is driving the Mariner in the mean time and with that being said, I am not working at T's school this year to answer your question. If things change I told her I would call her.

Jean: Thomas has played violin four years now and continue to likes it. He is much better at piano though, but then I think piano is an easier instrument to master. My mom and grandma both sewed and my younger sister sewed a lot when she was a lot younger. She used to make the most adorable dresses for her daughter. She let me borrow a lavender one she smocked for Kelly when she was about 3 and she was so cute in it with that long blond hair. My grandmother made my wedding dress.

Well, I guess I should find something to do. You all have a great day! Faye

Good morning, ladies! Overcast and 60 degrees today with rain on the way for tomorrow.

Nothing going on today but work and the Y. Some days that is good. I have a lot of small items to make for retreat friends in the next 2 weeks. I'll attempt to post a picture when I get them done.

I can tell I have lost some inches since I traded out to my fall/winter wardrobe - my pants are big. I guess DAV will be getting full bags at my house for awhile.

Faye, wow! sorry about Jack's car. That could be a huge expense. I know you are happy to have T with you for a few day's. Shame on Jack for forgetting to tell you.

Maggie, I'm not overly fond of most Mexican food around here, but there is one authentic restaurant run by a Mexican family that is very good. We'll be going there next Tuesday before we go to River Country Quilters meeting. I think it would be nice to have a new outfit as an incentive to stay OP.

Ladies, the new WW plan is being released to Meeting and Online members on November 28. The Nov/Dec WW magazine says it is the first major change in 13 years when points came out. We'll still have points, but they will be computed differently. It'll be very interesting I think. I ordered the WW ProPoints Cookbook on Amazon. It'll be released at the end of December.

Enjoy your day!

Good Morning, Flowers! We have some sunshine peeking through scattered clouds this morning -- definitely feels like fall outside. I've been invited to join an October birthday club that will be eating lunch together this noon. Everyone just orders off the menu; I think I went to this many years ago when it was held at the country club and the "older" gals dressed fit to kill. I never went back, and I'm sure most of them are long gone by now. I really don't feel like going but yet felt a little obligated to go since the invitation is from a new friend. I got a letter from BCBS that Medicare doesn't like one of my scripts and wants me to try something different unless my doctor will write an excuse for me. I'm waiting for his office to call back; I called at 8:00 this morning and HATE to sit around waiting for them to call back.

Susan -- I hope you aren't too sore today after the exercise sub put you through a different routine. Thanks for the quilt fabric info -- now I understand why quilt shops sell fabric. I took the Stretch 'n Sew class when we lived in Ohio and did make a few t-shirts.

Maggie -- I've never heard of a gut wagon nor a ditch rider. I learned something new. We do plan to be home for Christmas this year. After our crazy weather and everyone snowed in last year, it just didn't seem like a "real" Christmas.

"Gma" -- I'm sorry the car is on the fritz again. I hope it is the cheaper fix for your sake. I know you will enjoy having Thomas for a couple days. It's nice that he wants to spend time with you and Jack.

I need to vacuum and unload the dishwasher. I ate breakfast but I'm hungry again. Enjoy your day!

Talking Titilating Tuesday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a sunny Fall day here in the Heartland. I do like this weather for sure. I haven't done much yet this day except read the news. I am doing some glass works later this day. Will is out and about and just called to say that he got some external speakers for our TV. They will surely improve the sound on the blue ray movies I could bet. The sound coming from the TV is OK but just OK. That wasn't something on our "need" list but we have to get some "wants" once in awhile.

DONNA FAYE Thomas is a delightful child. What talent he has to play the violin at his age. I love those gift baskets ~ why not make them again? You know chile rellanos are regional. Made a mariod of different ways depending on what area of Mexico the folks came from. I have tasted some really good ones and stay away from the not so good ones. In a new place I always ask what type that they are.

JEAN That October group sounds like a fun deal to get hooked into. Medicare is getting cranky with the meds. I am so glad we don't have to do our meds through them. I hope you get yours straightened out to your satisfaction. You know we have slang for those food trucks like "roach coach" also not meaning any disrespect. The one that parked here is top quality food. Well I haven't tried everything on their menu yet but their carnitas tacos are great.

SUSAN How nice you are shrinking. Yep we can tell it by how our clothes fit for sure. Mexican food is only as good as how they had it in the region they came from. There are so many variations of how to make the dishes. I learned how to cook it from my mom who came out of Texas and that is what I got used to and guage it all by that. And she learned it from what ever the region of Mexico the folks in Texas came from at that time.

Life is good ~ consider the alternative. Type at y'all later

Evening gals. With Thomas here, I might not get in here in the morning so thought I would just post tonight since you probably won't see it until morning anyway.

That boy, what a hoot! First off, we got the giggles together because he brought this game for our Wii called Chibi Robo, about this little robot that goes around town solving things or something like that. Anyway, the whole thing is talked basically in gobbledy gook. They subtitle what everyone is saying but it is like a record being played backwards. So, I started the whole nonsense by talking to him in Chibi Robo and here you go. We kept that up for about an hour talking nonsense to each other and giggle like two year olds. Then we had to run an errand this afternoon and had to sit and wait. Well, he got an Ipod Touch a few weeks ago and brought it with him. If you know what an Iphone is, it is like that but without the phone. You have apps and such. He had blackjack on it and we sat and played while we waited and he beat my pants off. You know, they say never to take "insurance" when it is offered as that is a "sucker" bet. In other words when you take out the insurance the house advantage is very high. Well, every time the "take insurance" would come up when the dealer showed an ace, I would say no and T would say yes. Do you know he won 5 times in a row taking insurance!!! I had to check on something so he said he would play my hands until I sat back down. I came right back and he said insurance was offered and he took it for me and "too bad, you lost!" Little monster! So I went down in flames! I also lost Uno by one lousy card. His popcorn factory stuff and his tshirt came today. I will post of pic of him in his tshirt probably tomorrow. Man or man you should have seen this canister. I can understand why Jay said he would be eating a lot of it when Jackson called last night to thank us. You know usually when you order something online from a catalogue or picture online you get it and it is itty bitty compared to the picture. Well, I kept that in mind and ordered these Halloween canisters for the boys that I figured were about 4-5 inches high. Nope, they were the big ones like bedroom trashcans. They got cheese popcorn, smores popcorn, white cheddar popcorn, buffalo ranch popcorn, 2 popcorn balls, a big bag of pretzels, a box of chocolate chip cookies, a bag of taffy, a bag of jelly beans, and a bag of chocolates. They are knee high in treats for awhile, but at least it wasn't all candy!

We took him out to dinner tonight and I asked him where he would like to go knowing what the answer would be; Chilis. His mom and dad don't care for it much and Thomas loves their chocolate molten cake so he always wants to go there when we go out. That was ok, I got the chicken fajitas and ate the meat and veggies instead of all the junk that comes with it. I did have a couple bites of dessert though.

Susan: I am anxious to see what the new plan says. I have often wondered when they would update the pts system. I have often though sugar should be taken into account. Will be interesting to see what the differences are. I told Jack from now on if he talks to Thomas and has trouble understanding him to let me talk to him. It was on his birthday so I guess he thought the phone call should just be for him, I don't know. Glad I didn't have any plans so he could come over though. I miss him when we don't see him for a long time. He has one heck of a busy social life.

Maggie: Yes, and the funny thing is he seems to enjoy playing both instruments. He loves playing his guitar hero games for the Wii too. I do know that depending on where you go in Mexico the food is different so I expect it depends on where the Mexican people who own the restaurant grew up as to what you get. I too always ask about the rellenos and 9 times out of 10 it is that puffed batter stuff.

Jean: You asked me about the commissary. No, it isn't busier one day over another it all depends on when military payday is. They get paid 15th and the 1st. If their payday is 2-3 days before or after the weekend then the weekends are always nuts to shop. If you add in the retirees getting their checks the 1st and then any SS recipients and it can get really busy. The thing is, commissaries don't do things like regular grocery stores. Every one we have ever shopped in has one long line and they either have an electronic system or a human telling you which check out to go to. So on busy weekends you can stand in line for an hour as the next person in line can't go to a checkout until the person checking out is completely done!!!! UGH, now you know why I hate it so much.

Well, I think I will watch T play his video game awhile then we will scoot up to bed. We let him stay up until I notice he is getting really sleepy then I send him upstairs to brush his teeth and go to bed. With it being a weeknight and Jack going to work tomorrow, I will have to make sure his door gets closed because he always turns on the tv and watches cable until he falls asleep.

Have a wonderful Wednesday all. It clouded up something awful tonight but all we got were a few sprinkles and nothing else. Bummer. Have a good evening! Faye

Good afternoon, ladies! The rain has arrived and it is 61 degrees so a bit cool today.

I went to water aerobics this morning and have sewing to do this afternoon, then dinner with Elaine and we will then go on to our applique bee.

Faye, you certainly have treated the grandsons well for Halloween. I'd be in hog heaven with all the popcorn. T is a delightful young man.

Hi, Jean and Maggie!

Have a great day.

Good Afternoon, Flowers! This morning I went to a memorial committee meeting at church. We have to put together a list of members who died in the past year also where or what the family wants the $$ to go towards. The service is set for Nov. 7th -- not sure why it isn't the last Sunday in October as it usually is. Bob and I will light candles as the names are read at first service and the bell is rung after each name. It's a cool sunny morning but the weatherman says it will be warmer this afternoon. It looks like we will have a rainy weekend. Our DVR was recording screwy and I didn't catch it until last night. After Bob called tech support, plugged, unplugged, twice, called again, the tech guy said we weren't the only ones having the problem. They did a reset from their location. It is working now so hope it continues; I hate trying to figure out electronic stuff!

Susan -- You and I posted at exactly the same time yesterday! Great minds think alike! I'm glad you have lost inches even though the scale wasn't happy last week. We do have a couple of "real" Mexican restaurants; I've gone a few times with other teachers but the servers all speak such broken English (or none at all) that it is hard to ask (understand) what is in some of the dishes. I guess another one has just opened and they put tiny hot peppers by the items that are spicey. It will be interesting to see what changes WW has this time. I just get used to one program and then they switch to something new.

Maggie -- There is a brisk wind blowing leaves around today. Our trees are the last to drop and they are still green except for a few that were broken during the wind storms last summer. You will enjoy the external speakers. We don't have them but depending on the sound quality (HD?) of some shows, it sounds like the music or people talking are all around us. What is a carnita?

"Gma" -- I can just see you and Thomas "talking" and playing games together. My grandpa was not a good loser when I would beat him at cards. It used to tickle my grandma because he'd get up from the table to do something else. The Halloween cannisters sound like a great gift!! The only thing I remember about commissary shopping was buying cigarettes for Bob's dad because they were so much cheaper. The Sioux City base didn't have a very large one so I don't think I shopped there very often.

I have bell practice at 5 and need to accomplish something before I leave. Have a GREAT afternoon/evening and enjoy!

Jean -- from Iowa!

Talking Hallelujah Humpday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

I have been keeping busy this morning making small bookles of those who attend church here. They are 5½ by 3½. Just a good size to keep in a purse or pockets for those who just might want to get in touch with others when out and about. We had visitor drop in this day which makes the morning pass quickly. The postman brought boxes of reference books from TN where Will had a friend store them and now he needs some of them. So here they are ~ now to find a place to put them up. Probably next door at the church building in his office would be a good place. I am stuffed. We went out to I-Hop and I had the sampler plate which I didn't finish but feel stuffed anyway. I will eat real light tonight. I am thinking of only broth and cottage cheese with pineapple.

JEAN Carnitas are small pork taco's. The tortillas are those small 3 inch ones which are steamed, not fried. They are really good too.

SUSAN Sounds like you have a full day planned. Good to keep busy.

DONNA FAYE What a neat time you did have with that youngster. Feels good to laugh a lot doesn't it.

I have some work I need to get done. This evening is mid week Bible study and I have some typing to do for it I think, maybe, or not. I'll check. Type at y'all later.

Good morning to you all! It is in the 50's right now but is supposed to be mid 80's today again. We had to take Jack to work this morning since I have to take Thomas home by 2 this afternoon. He has music lessons at 4:30 today so need to drop him off before I go and get Jack.

Thomas is such a pleasure to have here. He never puts up a fuss about doing anything I tell him to do, he takes himself to bed at a reasonable time everynight and eats well. What more could you ask?

Susan: Your applique bee do you have a theme you work on for a period of weeks? Just how does it work, do you put your appliques on your own work or a community work or what? Hope you had a good time with your friend Elaine.

Jean: We had a bit of trouble on Tuesday with the Wii too. We couldn't get it to come on no matter what we did. I finally went to the website troubleshooting and it said to unplug the cords from both ends for 2 minutes then plug it back in and voila it started right up. You must have gone to either an Air Force or Army commissary as the Navy ones don't sell cigarettes. You have to buy cigarettes at the Navy Exchange. You used to not be able to buy soft drinks at the commissary, but they changed that several years ago and now you can buy them but not beer, etc. You have to buy that stuff at the package store. Maybe with Halloween actually being a Sunday this year they didn't want a memorial service to be muddied up with ghosts and such so to speak.

Maggie: I always liked have a church directory and having one to go in your handbag is a neat idea. How big is the churches congregation? I noticed the other day the Crystal Cathedral is in bankruptcy. I had read a year or so ago that father and son had a rift and he gave the pulpit to someone else and noticed it is a woman there now. That's what happens with those megachurches in hard times. They need lots of money to pay everybody and keep the lights on and people quit giving. We have a couple huge black churches here in our neighborhood actually, one of them now owns the mall about a mile from here. They are revamping the whole thing wanting to get the neighborhood to shop in the area instead of driving across town to shop at the other mall, but the fact is, there is too much crime here and people don't want to shop where they will get accosted, which has happened numerous times at that mall. I used to walk in that mall when the whether was bad before it got hit by that bad tornado we had 3 years ago. The once vibrant mall was a bunch of tacky shops and such. Well they have put an Incredible Pizza where there used to be a Macys that moved out and are putting a bunch of other shops in but will cater to blacks as the shops they are planning basically sell black fashions and such.

Thomas has had his breakfast and is now playing with it Ipod Touch. I am going to work on socks this morning I think as I have a pair for Kelly to finish for her birthday and that is next month. I have one done and the other one partially done.

Well, everyone have a good Thursday! Talk to you later. Faye

Good Morning, Flowers! It's another beautiful fall day in my corner of the world. I have a window open for Ernie and he is watching the bugs fly around outside. I have WW later and another 5:00 meeting at church. One nice thing about 5:00 is everyone is hungry so the meeting only lasts an hour or so. No one wants to commit their time to be on committees so we will have to start over with new names to call.

Maggie -- It's nice of you to type the church booklets. I'm sure people will appreciate them. We have a picture directory but the last one took over a year to get so was very outdated when it arrived. I get a current list to keep up with my birthday cards but know that there probably are "over 80s" who don't want people to know how old they are so didn't give their birthday dates to the office.

"Gma" -- We had an air base in Sioux City at the time (1968-69) and there still is an Air Guard unit there but no commissary. All of the barracks and married housing is gone. If you remember there was a "famous" air crash there many years ago where the pilot was enroute to Chicago when he couldn't steer the plane and tried to land in SC. Many people were killed but many survived and the pilot became a national hero -- Al Haines. He is from Oregon (or Washington) and comes back for crash anniversary shindigs. Jason was walking corn fields at the time and it was later during harvest that a neighboring farmer found a missing piece of the plane necessary to figure out what went wrong. Have fun knitting today! Your house will be quiet with Thomas going home today.

I need to get busy and get some things out to the curb for garbage pickup. I forgot to toss a few things from the fridge when Bob took the wastebasket out.

Have a nice day wherever you are and whatever you are doing today!

Jean -- from Iowa!
