Steel Magnolia #43
Good morning everyone! The dogs got me up early having to go out. I haven't fed them yet, but they are staying around my legs until I do so when I get through here I guess they will get fed.
I woke up to a huge and I mean huge shock this morning. I always look at my emails first. Of course that woman from the clothing store after 5 emails is still ignoring me. Anyway, I had an email from a friend I went to high school with and her cousin, a girl that lived next door to me all 18 of my growing up years, went to school with me, etc passed away yesterday. I went to my local newspaper and saw her obituary, but it just said she died in her home. I later got an email from her cousin this morning that said she got hit by a bus a year ago and had serious injuries so ignored pains in her stomach until it was too late, went to the dr and they found cancer, which eventually spread to her blood. It is beautifully cool here this morning and nice not to wake up to 80+ degree heat. I don't know if we can continue to have cooler overnight temps, but I would be happy with them that's for sure. We are having fun with the boy. Last night I was telling his granddad that after we get back from vacation we will have to shampoo the one carpet again as one of the dog's had a booboo in there. What a said verbatim and was a slip of the tongue, "We will have to shampoo that carpet when we get back from vacation because Thomas peed on it." I said, "Oh, I mean Marty." Thomas was sitting behind me at the computer and piped up, "Oh, since you gave me permission to pee in there I will." then he giggled. That boy, he is a stinker. We sat around yesteday afternoon while granddad took a nap and discussed tv programming. Today we take him to Incredible Pizza. My weight watchers is taking a hit this weekend, but it comes with the territory. Susan: Sounds like you got some great deals on veggies and meat. I have a half of a pork tenderloin in my freezer right now that I am going to slice and make into a little hawaiin luau kind of meal. I found a WW recipe and I am going to use it and put it over rice I think next week. I am sorry your weight seems to be stalled. Maybe your body is just where your body is going to stay whether the doctor wants something else or not. I am sure you will figure out what is going on and get back to sliding down the weight scale until you get to where you want to be. I am not a huge crust fan either, but I use the pillsbury pie crusts when I want to make a pie for something as they are thin and have a really good taste I think. I hate those big thick crusts. Better for me to avoid pie alltogether! I reallylike that chili recipe too. I saw a couple that your WW lady posted that I saved to my recipe file. Won't be long and chili will be the thing to have. Jean: Yikes, you have turned off cold. Hope the weather warms up for a last trip to the lake this weekend. I know Jack said there was a slow moving cold front going through this weekend. I noticed the hotel we are staying at in a couple weeks was busy this weekend. Everyone is trying to get one last summer trip out before fall I guess. Ok, I have been meaning to ask you, but I forget everytime. You are always making and taking "bars" to functions, what kind of bars do you make? The dogs wouldn't leave me alone so I had to stop and feed them but now they are somewhere upstairs I guess. They go back to bed and leave me awake! ;);) You gals have a grand Sunday. Talk to you again soon. Faye |
Good morning, ladies! It was 67 degrees in the house when I got up but it's already up to 76 now. I love cool nights. We're supposed to have 80 degree temps for the next week. I'm sure the heat hasn't passed for good.
Faye, I'm sure I can lose more weight. It's just going to take time. I'm trying to average 2 pounds a month for the next year so that is not overly ambitious. I know I've been making not so good choices when I've been eating out lately so I've got to tighten that up. When I was a leader for WW in the early to mid-80s in Ohio, I weighed 125. I had a cousin who was a sleep walker. Once when he was about 6 years old, his parents were watching TV with the lights low and he got up and walked into the kitchen, peed in the dog's dish and went back to bed without waking up. Fortunately he outgrew that by the time he entered adolesence. I'm really sorry about your friend. What an awful way to go. I also want you to know that concerning problems with slowness on the site, the fix seems to be to use Firefox for your browser. The problem is coming from the target and soy joy ads which they don't seem able to turn off, not from the 3fatchicks website itself. I use Firefox at work so I downloaded it this morning and everything is great again. I tried opening IE and FF at the same time and IE was still slow but FF and I were humming along. Its a free download and very simple for even the non tech person to install. www.firefox.com - I almost forgot - it blocks all ads so the is a great added bonus. As usual, I've let my challenge project on the back burner too long and now I have to work on it fast until it is done so everything is on hold until then. It's due on Friday morning. Enjoy your day! |
Good Evening, Flowers! This has been such a weird day for weather! We headed for the lake in jeans and sweatshirts! It was cool and a bit windy, but the kids got in one last boat ride. Beth, Amanda, and I stayed in the cabin where it was a bit warmer! Jason and Amanda were leaving midafternoon for a concert so didn't have time to take the boat out. Guess we are going back tomorrow to take the dock out and bring the boat home. By late afternoon the sun was shining and it was actually warm outside.
Susan -- I'm sure maintaining must be frustrating for you! I know you won't give up and will get to goal eventually; your body just doesn't want to budge right now. :( My flowers are beginning to look pretty ratty from all the wind. I used to sleep walk when I was a kid and my mom would find me on the couch in the morning. My dad put a lock high on the basement door because he was afraid I might fall down the stairs. Do I have to dump IE if I download Firefox? I really had to :lol3: at your "it's very simple for even the non tech person to install." Would you come and do it for me? ;) "Gma" -- It was sad about your friend's death, and so sad because she didn't see a doctor sooner. :( It sounds like Thomas is a typical kid -- ears listening while he's doing something else. :D The bars I made this time took a butter pecan cake mix, egg, butter. and vanilla for the bottom layer, then cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, and vanilla topped with pecans for the next layer. They are definitely not WW friendly, but everyone liked them. My family basically thinks chocolate is the only flavor and I have a recipe for a buttermilk sheet cake that is so good. Another favorite of mine takes a cake mix for the base and the filling is like pecan pie. :T I rarely bake because it is too much for the 2 of us, and we don't need it. Jason was born 37 years ago on Labor Day and it was 92 degrees outside. It always seems like his birthday should be on LD. I'm heading off to bed to read for awhile. Enjoy your day tomorrow! :D Jean -- from Iowa! |
Good morning ladies! Today is my last day with my sweet Thomas. We take him back to his other grandparents this evening after dinner. I am making him a definitely not WW friendly special dinner, but I love having him so much I thought he deserved it. I am making a baked scallop and shrimp scampi over rice with asparagus in olive oil and garlic. I made some nice yeast rolls yesterday and have some left so will have them with them. I bought a little box of a lava cake dessert for him and I have ff cool whip for on top so he is definitely getting a restaurant meal tonight.
Susan: Thanks for the link. I have to ask Jack before downloading another browser though. He is kind of prissy about anything with regards to the computers. What I mean is he is a man and men tend to be close minded. He like IE and so he might not want Firefox so...... :) Hope you get your project finished. I have to get back to knitting, but not until it cools down for fall. My hands just get sweaty when it is hot. I am reading at the moment. I took a great old Robert B Parker paperback I hadn't read with me to the pizza place and read while they had a good time bonding. I love to go there for the simple reason it is the one place he and Jack can go and do things totally by themselves. I sit back and don't participate. They raced go carts, played mini golf, and deal or no deal. I cracked up at Thomas. They would play and back he would come with a fistful of tickets then back to the game. We went real early as soon as they opened up to beat the crowds and they played first then ate so they got to do all the fun stuff before the lines formed. Can't say I ate healthy, but I didn't pig out either. I had a tiny piece of cheese pizza, a bread stick some tortilla chips with cheese sause and lots of jalapenos. For dessert I got a huge piece of what they call cherry cobbler, scraped off all the nasty crust, which is pizza dough for heaven's sake and ate the cherries out of the sauce. The boys had a wonderful time and we left around 2, but it wasn't busy because I forgot the Delta Fair was just down the road and it was drawing all the people. When we drove back by the cars were lined up down the highway to get in. Jean: Ooh, Jean you have to email me the recipe for the bars that are like pecan pie. I bet Jack would love them for a special occasion. I had to  at your "laboring on Labor Day." You are right, totally apropos, though the holiday is for relaxing and I am sure you were NOT relaxed! :D Hope everyone had fun yesterday. Ok, you hate to cook, but do you like baking instead? You know some people hate to cook meals but will make elaborate desserts and such. Jack is off early this am to get the oil changed at Firestone. We do all our car stuff there and they sent us a coupon for $20 off $30 or more and our oil change is $35 so good deal. It was time for the oil change anyway and with the trip coming up it was the perfect time. I told him to have them check the tires and make sure they were in good shape too. I look at them all the time and they always look good to me, but just in case. I am going to get out of here and maybe read for a bit while T snoozes upstairs. We are supposed to go over swimming at his house, but it is cool this morning so I don't know. Have a great Monday all! Faye |
Good evening, ladies! Beautiful day in the 80s.
I have worked on the challenge quilt all day and finally can start quilting it tomorrow. Everything has gone wrong that possible could, but I will have it done on time. You don't have to have to take IE off to install FireFox, they co-exist beautifully. I have both and go back and forth. We use FireFox at work because IE won't let us view some of our client's websites. Faye, I'm glad you have had such a nice weekend with T. He'll have great memories when he gets older. Jean, your weather is a lot different than ours. We're one week down in the worst month for hurricanes and I hope we don't see any more! I'll think about sweatshirts in November. Have a great evening! The Y re-opens tomorrow and my sports bag is packed to go to work with me. |
Good Evening, Flowers! It was another weird weather day in my corner of the world. We headed for the lake early this morning; it was cloudy but warmer than yesterday and a few sprinkles of rain fell along the way. Jason and Bob took the dock out, got the boat out, and we gals stripped all of the bedding, towels, etc., and cleaned out the fridge. Bob and Jason have to fix a spot beyond the ceiling where water dripped this spring. I'm not sure what the plan is but it will have to be done before it freezes, then drain the pipes, and call it good for another summer.
We drove home in rain and it's very windy tonight. We are in a wind advisory until 6 AM. I'm working in the gift shop tomorrow morning and will try to give blood after I finish. It's been 6 months since I've donated blood. "Gma" -- I hope Thomas enjoyed his special dinner tonight. The lava cake sounds like something my family woud like. I don't really bake much; I have to be in the mood, and I don't do anything fancy that's for sure. ;) I was able to get in here both last night and tonight fairly quickly and w/o any pop-up boxes. :crossed: I will send you the recipe -- it's very easy. Susan -- I hope the rest of your challenge quilt goes smoothly. :) You had a lot of patience if you worked through the glitches. I noticed another storm is heading for Texas and we could get the tail end of it clear up here. Enjoy your trip to the Y tomorrow! I have a load of towels to fold and need to decide what to wear tomorrow. I wonder what the weather is going to be?! Have a terrific Tuesday and enjoy! :D Jean -- from Iowa! |
Good morning gals! Since Susan told me the two browsers were compatible I downloaded Firefox this morning and boy it sure did do a lot better getting into the site.
My scallop and shrimp recipe was a big hit. I didn't have any of it as I had a case of heartburn just from one taste of Thomas's Chinese food at lunch. He got Szechuan beef and one taste and it was heartburn city all afternoon though I have to say it was really good. Since the recipe had a lot of garlic and spices I bypassed it and the asparagus which was garlic, olive oil and parmesan cheese. I later had a sandwich for dinner after we took him to his other grandparents. He consumed it. I think he ate 7 scallops and about 4-5 shrimp then had a big portion of asparagus and rice. He cleaned his whole plate except for one lonely little shrimp. I ask him over the weekend if there was any fish he didn't like. He said no, then yes that he didn't like lobster and shrimp was just ok, but I told him no, I meant regular fish and he said no. I have seen him eat sea bass with the whole fish staring up at him, he loves talapia, any white fish, salmon, any of the fish they put in sushi, he gets that seafood pot at Joe's Crab Shack so I imagine he eats clams and such as well. Not many 10 year old boys that pick that kind of stuff over a good ole hamburger. Like I said, when we went to Ruby Tuesdays he had cajun white fish, mashed cauliflower and salad with mashed potatoes. Most kids would get burgers or chicken nuggets or something. You know, I can honestly say I have not seen him eat any of that stuff in a restaurant since he was probably 2-3. Susan: Thanks for the firefox link! It sure made a difference with the site here. Hey, that's why it is a challenge right? ;) I really need to finish Kelly's other sock. I bought myself some baby pink yarn to make a pair of socks. Don't know what possessed me to get pink, but I just thought it was pretty. I hope that when he is a grown man he can look back and tell his kids, "I always had fun at Nonny and Granddad's." We sure have fun with him. He has one heck of a sense of humor and is very impish. He is also very well behaved, which is lovely in a child. Jean: So now the cabin is going to be lonely until next year except fore repairs and such. Time sure does fly. I can't believe summer is already over. Jack and I have one more hurrah in a couple weeks than it is settling down to cooler weather and facing the mess out on the deck. We haven't touched it all summer and it is ghastly, but with 100 degree temps and 80% humidity we just couldn't. Our backyard is definitely a "don't let this happen to you" sort of thing and you know I always would get out in the spring and put everything out and such. Haven't done that in a couple years now, partly because I need new chairs for my patio as they have now rusted at the bottom. I have a glass topped table and it is in perfect shape. It is hard to find nice chairs alone. Most you have to get as the set. Thomas never even got his cake. He ate so much at dinner he was too full. The one thing I have learned knitting is patience and I bet Susan is the same about her sewing. You have to be or you just give up. I get frustrated sometimes and will put it down, but I get the urge to "fix it" so I just can't leave it most of the time. Lots of laundry to do today so need to get back to it. We didn't do anything while Thomas was here so now my house needs cleaning, all the laundry caught up and clean sheets back on the spare room for the next time he comes. Have a great Tuesday everyone!!! Faye |
Titilating Tuesday
GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS
A lovely day here in the Heartland. I am awake and sipping my tall container of coffee just like I had good sense. I had a real "wake up call" about my eating program. I was being a yo yo to the max and not really getting anywhere. However, I had a nice talk with myself and have decided to hunker down and buckle up and do this thing and get with it seriously. I do NOT want to mess around and gain what I worked so hard to get off so the insanity stops NOW. I took a good look at my records and was dismayed. There were days and days when I didn't track. I have got to get back to the "if I bite it ~ I will write it" mode I used when I lost so good. I know what to do so why don't I do it? Does anyone else have that problem? I am such a perfectionist with other things why don't I exhibit that behavior with my eating program? I do so need to get a grip and hang on tight. I just now received an e-mail from Red Lobster and their endless shrimp is back. I am so glad there isn't one of those restaurants near. To go to one we have to take a long drive.:o Endless shrimp, I do so love shrimp. I know when I "write what I bite" my program works for me so that is what I need to start back doing. I have all the tools I really need to do this thing ~ just have to use them. I do go through this every once in awhile don't I. Well I am back now. If I bite it I write it. DONNA FAYE Thomas is such a joy and he will surely remember the good times he spent with you and his grandpa. I remember times I spent with mine way back to my pre-school years. Those were real special days. I am blessed to have had such a good childhood. Thomas will feel that way too when he is older looking back. Stay cool. When is it that you leave for "vacation?" I don't know if we are going anywhere this year except for a trip down to Texas. Got to go down to Texas. JEAN Already taking the boat out. My doesn't the time fly and get away from us. We blink and there went Summer. Your grandchildren are getting some good memories from their trips to the cabin with you. All the fun and laughter in the water and the sun. I do so miss the ocean. I grew up a few blocks from the Pacific and loved it. I drove to work on a road beside it and it was part of me every day. Now we have to drive a few miles to a small lake and it really isn't quite the same. I miss the ocean. When we lived in MN it was on the shore of a huge lake so that was good. A sail boat tied up the the dock. AH ~ what a beautiful lake. SUSAN What is the weather like in your neck of the woods? Guess I need to check the weather map. Since every thing has calmed down somewhat I didn't check it this day. So you are almost finished with the quilt you have been working on ~ did I read that right. I bet you are excited when you get to the end of one. Hope the weather is kind to you this day. I can imagine what a beautiful area you live in. One day I want to take a trip along the eastern coast. Been top to bottom of CA along the coast. |
Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's a beautiful day in my neighborhood except a tad too windy -- messes my hair up when I go outside! I worked in the gift shop this morning and even sold a few items for a change. :cp: I ate a tavern sandwich in the coffee shop for lunch, and then went to donate blood. The tech wasn't as good as some I've had and the needle stung for awhile. She tried to tell me it was the antiseptic sponge she used . . . I don't think so! :( I wanted to run a couple errands but felt like I had rubbery knees and wanted to sit down so came home instead.
"Gma" -- I marvel at all the different things Thomas will eat. :D Kolby is pretty much pb&j, mac & cheese, or hot dogs along with the chips and sugar items. If he doesn't want to try a new food, his standard answer is "I'm allergic!" He figured out a boy in his preschool was allergic to strawberries so didn't have to eat them. Obviously he takes his lunch to school. :twirly: We tried to find lawn chairs with the mesh strips that you can replace when they start to wear. I guess they don't make them any more because we couldn't find them. Any chairs we leave on the deck rot because of the afternoon sun. I brought home all of the bedding, towels, etc., from the lake so have piles of laundry to do. There is a washer and dryer up there but mine are bigger so I'd just as soon do it here. :) Maggie -- I ate way too much non-WW friendly food over the weekend. I just have NO willpower when others bring food to share and I happen to like it! :o Then I am  at myself after the fact. I could dine on RL biscuits and forget the rest. :T I hate to journal but also know it sure helps me stay on track. We are hoping for a boat ride on the local lake before the boat goes into storage for the winter. What lake were you on in MN? My folks' cabin was on a tiny lake near Bemidji. We sometimes drove by Lake Mille Lacs and I always thought it was so big. I hope you all are having a nice sunny day. Enjoy! :D Jean -- from Iowa! |
Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is shining brightly and the furnace has come on a couple times already. :) I have lunch bunch today and need to do a couple more loads of laundry before I leave.
I have to get busy and accomplish something before I leave this morning. Have a wonderful Wednesday! :D Jean -- from Iowa! |

Good morning to you all! Boy, I can't believe the difference firefox makes getting in here. If I am looking at other stuff, I open IE then just open a second window with firefox to post.
Jean: That is the worst part of trips, laundry. I told Jack that the Tuesday before we leave we will make sure that there is not one piece of laundry before we leave on Wed. I guess I didn't think about anything we would be wearing at the time on Tuesday and Wednesday morning shower towels and such. Ahh well, it was a good idea anyway! :) I like Kolby's allergic excuse. Have to remember that one when I go to family dinners and someone makes something I know is disgusting tasting.:lol: You should have seen some of the things Thomas ate on his vacations that I imagine almost all kids would have turned their noses up at. I just have to pat Kelly on the back for going down this road with him. He takes "Bento" boxes for lunch. Ever heard of them? They are Japanese lunch boxes basically. Kelly just loves them to put his lunches in. The Japanese mothers use them for their children and they are small so kids get proper portions instead of overloading them. They have them with little compartments and even little boxes that go inside the plates, but it looks like this one she made his lunch with is just flat I am including a picture of one that Kelly made for Thomas to take to school a couple weeks ago. If you notice, even his lunches are healthy. She said the fruit snacks were a treat as she usually won't let him have junk like that at school. I got tickled with her as she sent one to school with Thomas that had a combo of peas and carrots and their were frozen. She said it was the new thing to send them frozen then they would thaw before lunch and not be all soggy, but she had been scared to try it. I don't know how it turned out. What is a tavern sandwich? It sounds good. I am having a WW lunch I imagine. We are having tenderloin and baked potato with veggie tonight. Maggie: We are going in a couple weeks. We are anxious to get away for a bit. I love Red Lobster and could eat cold shrimp til the cows come home. It is my favorite thing. I wish they would actually put it on the menu besides the shrimp cocktail because I would definitely order it, but then I suppose no one wants a whole meal of cold shrimp. My recipe was sea scallops I bought fresh at Fresh Market and he said could be frozen and precooked frozen shrimp. They were tossed in real butter and minced garlic then laid out in a pan singly and the butter was poured over the top. It was topped with a bread crumb mix of crumbs, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder and parmesan cheese and baked in the oven for 20 minutes. It is NOT ww friendly but I imagine that you could easily use margarine instead of butter. It was a lb of each so if you were just making two servings you wouldn't use much butter at all because it doesn't use a huge amount. Both Jack and Thomas loved it. Hope you can get things going back with WW. It is always hard once we jump off to get back on, but we are always happy when we do I think. I have some stuff to do upstairs today including remaking the spare bedroom bed as I washed the sheets for it yesterday. Not much else going on in my world. I read another book yesterday from the ones I bought for the beach, very naughty as I finished the whole thing. I have a bunch I bought over a year go that I could read, but none are favorite authors and the two I have already read of the 4 new ones I bought are. I must keep my hot little hands off the other two! lol Have a great hump day!!! Faye |
Happy Humpday
GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS
It is a beautiful day here in the heartland. In the 70's and not too windy. I am so happy. My two new pair of shoes arrived today and I was really surprised because the notice I got said they would arrive between Sep 10 and the 16th and today is the 8th.:) Both pairfit nicely. One is by Propet called the Ghillie Walker. It is denium colored nubuck with those tear drop cutouts allong the sides and a lace up front with the toe out. Very steady built in heal set up like Propet does. I like them a lot and have them on as I type. The other pair are cork colored leather and also fit great and will wear well with my brace. They are the ones that look a lot like Birkenstocks. Needless to say that I am so pleased both pair will work for me. I ordered them out of the "Footsmart" catalogue and they delivered them quickly also. I need now to buy some new sox. :o I have one pair that match the Ghillie's. Maybe I will wear red ones and they can peek out of the cutouts.:D It really jazzes me to find shoes that will work with my brace. When I first got this brace about 10 years back the only shoes I could find that worked were made by SAS and are oxford type. Will bought me some green seedless grapes and they are so good. Really better than I remember last years crop. I love grapes. I like them frozen on hot days. I like to freeze the red seedless ones the best for they are bigger. I love fruit. When Will does the grocery shopping he finds neat fruit to bring me. There is a spot on the church lawn that won't grow grass. He has tried everything so we have made a different plan for that area. We got a neat wood and iron bench to set out there with some huge pots with neat plants in them. It is an area about 8 feet out from the building and will look real neat with the bench and stuff. We will put decorator gravel down first in that area and an edge of some sort. Anyway a bit of landscaping is in the works this day. ;) Those trucks that parked on the lawn when they were doing the roofing may have dripped some sort of fluid in that spot that killed the grass. JEAN So you will get one more boating event in before pulling it from the lake. Sounds like a plan. In MN we lived on Gull Lake and the road was called Gull Dam Road since there was a dam down it a ways. It always sounded like you were saying something else when you said the name of the road. It is a very large lake. DONNA FAYE OH just two weeks. It is gonna go fast girlfriend. That meal you prepared sounds yummy. I love sea scollops. They actually do serve scollops there but some places serve pieces cut out of the sea scates wings that they call scallops. When I have scollops I always ask if they are truly scollops. But in actuality the sea scates do taste a lot like scollops. But I am a purist and want the real thing when I order something.:p RL has the best fresh fish. SUSAN Good afternoon to you my friend. Hope all is well with you this day. I am going to do some work on the bulletin now. Type at y'all later. |
Good evening, ladies! A beautiful day today.
I'm still working on my challenge quilt. I can finally see I can finish it after work tomorrow. I went to the Y for water aerobics today. I have so much fun it isn't even like exercising. I have to get back to the quilting room - have a good evening. I'll have time for a real post Fridaty afternoon. |
Good morning to you all! We seem to be clouding up everyday but not much rain and we could probably use a nice downpour. It is definitely cooler so you can tell fall is on its way. The air conditioner actually shuts off for awhile at night now.
I have had some wheeziness over the last couple days and noticed a bit of a cough and sneeze this morning. I hope I am not catching a cold. It would be just like me to have one when we are on vacation. I swear that woman where I bought those clothes is driving me nuts. She still hasn't shipped my exchanged tshirts and got an email from her a few days ago explaining that the one shirt didn't come in turquoise in that size. So, I emailed her back and told her exactly what size and what color for each exchanged shirt and even included what the original shirt was then said "I want it exchanged for such and such." Well, she emailed me day before yesterday and said she was now really confused. What confused for heaven's sake. I am telling you, I get my stuff and I am never ever ordering from there again, period. Personally, I feel she is either jerking me around to keep from refunding my money and sending my stuff or she is the worst businesswoman on the planet. I am actually thinking the latter. Maggie: Glad you like your new shoes. I get that catalog too. Several years ago Jack had plantis fasciatis and needed a brace thing and we bought it from there. Since then they send me a catalog. They have some really cute sandals and such, but they are pretty pricey. It is great you find somewhere to get what you need though. I always have problems because I have big flat feet. We sure have had bugs this year. It seems like there are more spiders, roaches, water bugs and other things than in past years. I can't have them spray because of Fortune so all I can do is arm myself with bug spray and take them on one at a time or catch the critters when I see them! I noticed I got bit by a mosquito last night. Well, I need to get my chores done and the day started. Have a good one all. Faye |
Good Morning, Flowers! It is a gloomy day in my corner of the world this morning. Cloudy with a breeze, and 65 degrees so it is definitely a sweater kind of day. I'm wondering where the "nice" fall days are. :dunno: I notice the leaves are starting to turn colors around the lake. I have WW later this morning and then am going to visit a craft group that I've been invited to join. I was honest and told the hostess that I'm not very original nor crafty unless I can copy someone else. :o She said that a lot of times they just sit and visit. :cheer: I'm going to try and learn to needle tat since the hostess offered to lend me her book, needle, and thread. I think we are going to make a quick trip to Sioux City to pick up Bob's new suit when I get home. Our church shindig is Sunday and we have a funeral on Monday.
"Gma" -- I've never heard of Bento boxes and appreciate seeing the picture. It looks like a good organization tool for sure. I have been sneezing the last couple of days and I don't usually do that. It has to be this crazy weather! I'm sorry you are having so much trouble exchanging your clothes and/or getting a refund. Perhaps you should email the gal and offer to contact the Better Business Bureau in her area. The media around here has been nuts about bed bugs! :hyper: Maggie -- I'm glad you are happy with your new shoes! I get that same catalog and was tempted to order new sandals earlier this summer -- which I didn't need. The creative placement of a bench and flower pots will be attractive on the church lawn -- good idea. The boat is sitting in our yard beside the driveway, which is a no-no according to the city council -- should be on the driveway. It blocks the street view when backing out of the driveway for us and our neighbors so we are hoping no one will notice. If it doesn't warm up it will just get a quick clean and be put in storage for the winter. I've heard of Gull Lake and will look it up on the map. :D Susan -- Is your challenge quilt bed size or lap size? You will have it done in time I'm sure. I'm so glad you are enjoying your water aerobics. I wish I could come too! I need to get some shoes and socks, then head out. Have a terrific Thursday whatever you are doing! :D Jean -- from Iowa! |
Thankful Thursday
GOOD LATE MORNING MAGNOLIAS
It is in the 70's as I type and going to be a nice day here in the Heartland. Oh how I do love the cooler weather. I function much better when it it isn't so hot. I found a web site that sells lots of funky socks and I plan on ordering a few pair. :) Not much going on in my neck of the area but I am sure I can keep busy. I do have some glass work to do. I will have the afternoon alone since it is Will's day to work at the museum going through the old town documents that are so interesting for him to read. I am so glad he is enjoying his volunteer work.:p Ragg Mopp sure likes the cooler weather also and our Jeep does also. I need to figure out what I am making for dinner and get the meat thawed. Right now I don't have a clue nor an inclination to think about that now. :p I am sad that a couple of my favorite items are no longer being made by the companies that I got them from. Glide had small tins the size of quarters filled with floss. I like to have them in the glove compartment and in my purse and in my travel bag and now they no longer make them. Their smallest container is a 2" by 1" rectangle. I thought that it was just in this area I couldn't buy the smaller ones but then I called the phone number and found out my quest was for naught.:( The other item that I can no longer get is the Stim-U-Dent orange toothpicks that came in a nice little packet like paper matches do. Johnson & Johnson no longer makes them. If I had known they were no longer being made I would have bought a lot of them, but alas, I didn't find out until my supply was about to be depleted and time to buy some more came about. These were good items that I had first learned about from my dentist years back. In fact thay gave them out along with a toothbrush. Now I get a toothbrush and a small tube of tooth paste. I give the toothbrush to Will since I use an electric. That way he can change every three months and then get new ones at the next cleaning and not have to buy any in the meantime. Works for us. Since I can no longer get those nice toothpicks that were designed to remove plaque and fight gum disease I will just have to use those little brushes that go between teeth. They still make them, I think. I'll have to add that item to the next shopping list and we shall see if they are available still. I have some teeth that are very close together and I need to clean between them and regular brushing doesn't quite do that. I do go on, don't I. JEAN Tatting is a good thing for you to learn. I learned that when I wanted to make some little snow flakes and flowers, etc to paste on some greeting cards I made years back. I sneeze at least twice a day. DONNA FAYE I sure do hope you can get it through to that numb skull you are dealing with on your clothing issue. The shoes I got from FootSmart come in WW(2E) which works well with my brace. I also have flat feet ~ born with them. If you still have the catalogue which is called "FootSmart Fall Preview" you can turn to page 33, middle row, left hand side and see the ones I got there on sale for 30% off. I got those in cork color. Those sandals are not in their next catalogue. The other shoes are on page 36 or S as it is called. I got the Ghillie walker in Denium Nubuck in the same size as mentioned above. If that size fits you I suggust you get a pair of the Ghillie walkers because they are so comfortable and don't break the bank. I have had to pay twice that much for my SAS shoes which I will need a new pair of soon. They last me a few years. I have only had two pair of them for 10 years and wear them daily. So all in all they really aren't that expensive if I get that much wear out of them. SUSAN Quilt away my friend. Time to see about some lunch. Type at y'all later. |
Afternoon On Thrusday
HOWDY AGAIN THIS DAY MAGNOLIAS
I got so busy that I didn't have any lunch until 3 o'clock. I don't usually eat breakfast like most folks do. I just am not ready for food and when I do eat breakfast it seems like I have a :hun: day all day long. Anyway I did some work and then planned dinner :chef: which is going to be lemon pepper baked chicken breasts, green beens with a sprinkle of bacon bits on them and some of my rice mixture. That, my friends, is a low point dinner. I had soup, cottage cheese & a sliced up tomato for lunch. So far this week I have stayed on track and OP. Anyway I just wanted to peek in and post that what I decided to make for dinner. :p Type at y'all later  |
Maggie -- It sounds like you are enjoying some nice weather. It is almost too cool too quick around here. :( I keep dental floss in my purse and have one of the small round containers that my previous dentist gave to me. I know I saw them in some store but have never bought any. The craft group just sat and visited about their summer activities over warm apple crisp dessert, ice cream, and flavored teas. That was fine with me! It seems that when they began many years ago, the hostess would purchase the materials and everyone would make a craft item to take home. I knew everyone except one, and there were 9 of us. Your dinner menu sounds :T !
"Gma" -- I think you asked what a tavern is and I forgot to answer. They are also called sloppy joes, loosemeats, or some say bar-b-qs. They are just crumbled hamburger with some sort of sauce on them. :D I've used Manwhich in a pinch but also have a couple recipes that I make from scratch. There is a trademark Maid Rite sandwich which is just the meat with seasonings like pepper, garlic, etc., and they are yummy too. Bob is at church for practice and I think we are going to eat out when he is finished. I lost a 1/2# this week which surprised me since I overate all weekend. :( |
Good morning to you all. I hope this day finds you in good shape. It is very humid here this morning and near 80 degrees. I don't think we are done with the sticky weather quite yet.
I have given up on this dope in CA. She was supposed to contact me yesterday about my order, but you know she didn't. I seem to always get her attention when I post something nasty on her dress shop facebook page. I don't hear from her today I am going back to the facebook. Time is at a crunch now. I have less than 2 weeks to get the stuff and hope it fits. She also owes me $50 for return of the swimsuit, which I haven't seen. The BBB doesn't scare people like it used to. I am going to report her regardless because she deserves it. I don't know what she is like in her shop, but her online business, which is where most of her business is conducted is run very shoddy. I hope to get upstairs and clean the bathrooms today. I have been running a low grade fever off and on for several days and right now I feel like it might be up again. I guess if it is not better soon I will have to get back into the doctor's just to make sure. I know I am going on 3 weeks with the female stuff, which is ridiculous. I sure don't want to have to deal with this on vacation, but not much I can do about it. Maggie: I saw your shoes online at Footsmart. They do look like they would work really well with your brace and the toe cut out and such. I think toothpicks of any kind are going by the wayside. Younger folks don't ever use them except for cake baking and such. You don't see them in restaurants like you used to. Grandma used to get these cinnamon ones that were really good. Dusty Baker the manager for the Cincinnati Reds always has a toothpick in his mouth playing with it. He was the Cubs manager several years ago and I would see him on tv and swear he was going to choke on the thing the way he played with it. You dinner sounds good. We are going to treat ourselves tonight, but instead of eating out, I am going to make bbq ribs with baked potatoes. I have a killer sauce I make that Jack loves so I thought I would give him a bit of a treat. Jean: Ahhh, sloppy joes. I fix them using half lb of ground sirloin with manwich and whole wheat buns. Cuts the points big time. I thought when you said tavern sandwiches maybe they were made with tavern style meat like tavern ham, which is delicious. Start with something small so you don't put it away like you tend to other projects. I think if you do something really small you might find a craft you really enjoy because you won't feel so overwhelmed. I sometimes still do when I knit. I see it is 9 and I have yet to eat any breakfast or get any chores done save feeding the dog so I guess I better get started. Hope you all have a nice weekend. I have mostly housework planned but I think we will put Fortune in his seat belt and car seat and take a ride if it is nice. Faye |
Good Morning, Flowers! It's windy, pouring rain, and crappy in my corner of the world. :( I've been to get my nails done and pick up new library books; I made it home just as the rain began. We didn't make it to Sioux City yesterday so will go this afternoon. I have laundry in both the washer and dryer; can't see the dust so that can wait for another day! :)
"Gma" -- I would be happy to send you some of our 'cooler' weather! This is almost too much of a change too quickly. I hope your temp returns to normal so you don't have to visit the doctor. I wouldn't want you to be sick while you are on vacation though. I am still working (rarely) on the Christmas stocking I started umpteen years ago. It really isn't a good project to drag around with me though. One of the crafty gals crochets and knits so I'm hoping maybe she will teach me how to read and work a pattern. I think next time we will hear about a trip to France that one of the other gals is taking. She has a sister who has lived there for years so she will get in on nontourist stuff too. Enjoy your ride! I hope you all have a great day and enjoy what you are doing today! :D Jean -- from :rain: Iowa! |
Finally Friday
GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS
It is in the high 70's again today and wonderful weather for the wind isn't blowing. Just the constant breeze we get. I went in to do lunch and Will had the stove pulled out so I just came back here. He is cleaning behind and beside it. All that talk about sloppy joes gave me a meal idea. I will also make some cole slaw to go with. Thanks folks. I have some onion buns which are going stale which will work for those terrifidally. I have been cleaning my office/work room and putting things back where they belong and finding new homes for some things. I have so many cookbooks in here I really need that book shelf Will said he will buy me. :o Currently I am using a wooden chair as a book shelf. I like everything ship shape when I start a new project. A friend left me a jar of salsa on the front porch on their way to Florida. It is some she made and sure looks good and chunky. I am going to open it tomorrow and put some over an omlet for brunch. JEAN Tea with warm apple crisp and ice cream sounds wonderful. What a nice fun group of folks to gather with. Plus you met a new friend. I am sure you can pick their brains and learn a new craft easily. DONNA FAYE Would a pair of those shoes work for you? LOL Will has a toothpick in his mouth at most times. He takes it out to eat, sleep and preach and smooch of course. :o BBQ ribs and bakers ~ what time did you say dinner will be ready? If we had a lear jet we would be right over.:p Isn't it wonderful what foods we can eat and stay OP. The kitchen floor is dry and the stove is pushed back so I can go in and do my thing and get some lunch. Type at y'all later  Have a wonderful afternoon my friends. |
Good evening, ladies! It was a beautiful day. You can tell fall is on the way - its so cool at night. I turned the AC off yesterday. I keep it at 78 degrees anyway because I'm always cold.
I finished my quilt at 11 pm last night and turned it in for the challenge this morning. I'll try to get a picture on Tuesday so I can post it. It's a wall hanging because I only had those 13 ten-inch squares to work with. I can't say I'll be rushing to do machine applique again. Maggie, have Will look for dental flossers the next time he goes shopping. There are several brands. The are only a couple of inches long and great to carry in your purse. I always have some. You get dozens for a couple of dollars. One end has two prongs with a piece of floss between then and the little handle has a pointy end like a tooth pick. I'll try to put a picture of one at the end of my post. If it doesn't work, you can google dental flosser and see them. Jean, enjoy your craft group. It can be so much fun to get together and learn something new...to say nothing of the great desserts. Faye, the rip-off woman is probably not a member of the BBB. If so, they won't do anything because they only give out info on members. It's a sorry life we live me. Have you ever thought about getting a second opinion on the female issues? I hope you aren't coming down with something? Tomorrow I'm going with Sandy and Shelly to Mathews Market Days. It's wonderful juried arts and craft show outdoors. There is a large artist colony living there. Not that I can afford to buy anything but lunch. Have a good evening! |
Good morning to you all! I hope you all are having a nice weekend. I woke up at 5 having to go to the bathroom and Fortune too so now I am up. I checked my bank to see if she by any chance credited back my suit since there was no email from her but nada and while sitting here Fortune is barking and not at the door which means, "I want breakfast!" I got up and fed him so he would leave me alone for 5 minutes, he chomped down and now is sleeping in the recliner!:lol:
I am going to try and get the downstairs cleaned today. I wanted to get some work done upstairs but the temps ballooned into the upper 90's and pretty quickly so I gave up that idea. It does need it so I am going to have to bite the bullet tomorrow and get it done. I may give Jack the vacuuming duty so I can get things done faster. Susan: I think it is all hormonal including the slight fever on and off. I am limited by my insurance as to how much I can do. I have to get referrals to a gyn, but I am going to have to do something if this continues. The thing is, it isn't like "fertile" woman have at all, but it comes and goes in a light form, but everyday for days and days then may not do anything for a couple months, sometimes even 6 months at a time. I have seen one gyn, at least two gp's and then the doctors who did my testing and talked to me about it. They pretty much all concur on the findings that I have nothing to indicate any kind of trouble on or in any of my female organs. Since I have had 3 ultrasounds in different forms and a couple other tests internally and they can find nothing along with 4 rounds of blood tests, 3 different rounds of hormones of different kinds, the only thing they can come up with is I am not through menopause completely. I talked to some ladies on the WW boards and 3-4 of them said their mother's were near 60 before ending menopause so.... It is time for my physical again though and with a new doctor so I will probably start all over with it again and see what can be found out. I am sure she is not a bbb member because she just opened an actual shop a couple months ago. Until then she was all internet and you would think with that being her business, she would be better at customer service. I know one thing, I ever get all my stuff and my refund and I am done, done, done with her! Maggie: My grandson uses those little pick and floss things. In fact, last weekend he came downstairs with one doing his teeth and was trying to talk to me at the same time! lol I have almost run out of room for my cookbooks on my bakers rack. The shelves underneath are holding shoes and some other stuff so no room there. I also have two pocket folders full of recipes on paper I have gotten off the internet and such. Jack loved the ribs, me not so much. Nothing was wrong with them, I just wasn't very hungry last night until later. I just ate some potato and later on had a ww meal. Jack likes the different flavored bread that Subway makes when he gets deli sandwiches. I wonder if he would like the onion rolls? Jean: Jack asked me last night if we were supposed to get rain because his shoulder hurt. I had no clue but we have been clouding up every evening. No rain last night again but when you have arthritis it isn't the rain as much as the barometric pressure change that causes pain so it wasn't surprising he hurt. I told Jack last night when I was feeling particularly miserable I figured I would have to drag female products with me on vacation just in case which would irritate me no end. Jack went to France when he was in the Navy and didn't like it. He said the people are rude, they don't like Americans for the most part and he had didn't enjoy being treated that way. That wasn't in Paris and maybe Paris is different. I have to decide what I want to make for dinner tonight. I was a dope to do the ribs yesterday because the oven was on for 4 hours! The house got pretty hot combined with the weather outside. It is definitely going to be crockpot or top of the stove night. Guess I should get started on the cleaning. I told Jack as soon as we get back from vacation the weather should be cooler on average and I can get a normal treadmill routine started then maybe later walk in the neighborhood again. Right now that isn't an option until I can get some of this weight off since it is uphill all four directions so the treadmill is going to have to be it. Have a great weekend all! Faye |
Good Afternoon, Flowers! The sun is shining and it's a beautiful day in my neighborhood. :D I sold a balloon in the gift shop this morning and had a nice visit with another lady from AZ. She said it was 110 when they left Phoenix and they got here last night. I asked her if she was cold and she was. She's a retired teacher and here because her 99 year old mil is heading for a nursing home against the mil's wishes. I need to make a grocery run and can't find my list. :tantrum: I was sure I had put it in my purse a couple days ago and was going to add to it. I've gone through the recycled paper, my purse, and a kitchen drawer with no luck. Makes me nuts when I can't find something! :dizzy:
Maggie -- I'm glad your weather has cooled down some. I love home made salsa -- wish we could share it with you. :T My fil used to put salsa on everything after living in AZ. I looked at tea kettles yesterday in a kitchen shop; one was $59.99 and another $69.99! Needless to say I didn't buy any. Susan -- How do you hang your quilts at home? Mine came with a rack that my bil made for the quilt. The Arts and Craft show sounds like fun. :) I need to be thinking of something homemade for a Christmas gift. :hyper: My mind is a total blank right now. "Gma" -- I was awake at 5 this morning too! I did stay in bed until 6 but knew I had to find something to wear this morning and wanted to be at the gift shop by 9. :twirly: My knee, that the doc thinks is arthritis and I don't, is tender today and was yesterday too. Maybe it is the change in the weather. :?: Does Jack's knee bother him at all? Bob just left to work on his tractor for awhile. He spent a frustrating morning at church trying to get lights to work in the sanctuary. We have the fixtures that hang from chains and several have been burned out since last April when we played bells. Well, it seems that the needed 'big' bulb is no longer available! Wouldn't you think the DUMB custodians would have mentioned it to 'someone' in the office so Plan B could be in the works? Bob was torked to say the least because he could have checked yesterday in Sioux City. I hope you all are enjoying a nice day! :D Jean -- from :flow1: Iowa! |
Sunny Saturday
GOOD AFTERNOON MY MAGNOLIA FRIENDS
It is a bright sunny day in the 80's here in the Heartland this day. I am happy to say I am still OP and feeling good about it and do hope for a loss come Monday's date with the Iron Monster. All is well this day with Ragg Mopp sleeping beside me ~ on the floor of course :D He is such a good boy. I am making pork chops and the fixins with it for dinner and have a couple Schwans boneless ones thawing as I type. I like to lather them with lemon pepper and garlic first with a spray of olive oil and they cook up so yummy. I might even bake some of my little point friendly biscuits. Will loves biscuits so I do believe I will do that. I have this wonderful vanilla smelling soy candle burning as I type and it sure makes my office/shop smell good. I still have some sorting to do in this room and will get to it when I get off here. When we receive "stuff" from the mail in big boxes I like to save them for shipping glass articles in and I have quite a few just sitting in the middle of the room and under my work table. I can find room in the closet in here if I nest them I am sure. They really aren't in my way where they sit but do look cluttered.;) I have about got another building built and need to line up another project. Got to keep busy ya know. I am wearing my other new pair of shoes this day to get them broken in ~ well to be my feet friendly anyway. I have several pair of lite cakki sox that have the toes out that I like to wear with sandals. That way my toes are ~ gotta sneeze ~ open. Makes the sandal look better that way because I don't wear a sock on the other foot most of the time when I wear sandals. Works for me. ;) These look like Birkenstocks but have more of a flat footbed so my brace doesn't rock in them. I wore only Birkenstocks for years and years so you can imagine just how jazzed I am to have found these sandals that work with my brace. I hope next summer in their catalogue they will have them again and I can get a pair in a different color. You must be tired of my talking about my shoes. :o It has taken 10 years to find these and I am so happy. :carrot: My therapist back then told me I would forget about my favorite Birkenstocks and love my SAS. Well I love my SAS and didn't forget Birkenstock and found a substitute that will work. Life is good. DONNA FAYE Does your grandson use the ones with the green handle and have a tiny brush on the end or the white plastic pick thingies with the barbs on one end and are flat on the other end or the bow shaped ones with the floss strung on them? All are good for getting in between teeth. :p I woke up at 5 also and went back to sleep. :^: I could not stay up that early since I didn't go to bed till about 2 am. OH yes how our little critters do tell us when they are hungry or want a treet don't they. JEAN Weather does affect arthritic knees. I have a tooth that is affected by the baramator fluctions also. High humidity places really hurt folks with uncle arthor in their joints. I would be glad to share some salsa with you ~ this that my friend made is sooooo good. When she gets back from Florida I am going to ask if she will sell me a couple jars of it. I hope you found your shopping list ~ I hate it when that happens because I write things down when I think of them. I started doing that on one special tablet and don't tear the page off. If Will decides to go to the store sometimes he tears it off and takes it with him then I start a new page. SUSAN Market Days sound like fun. Enjoy yourself. I do remember having some of those thingies you described. Good idea to get them again. Someomes here ~ too hip, gotta go. |
Good evening ladies! It was a perfect day today.
We had a lot of fun at Market Days. In addition to the usual horrible choices of food, the Kiwanis was selling Fried Krispy Creme Donuts with ice cream and chocolate sauce. I did not buy one! All I bought was a salad for lunch. I didn't make it to WW this morning but that is okay, too. I've only missed one other meeting since last October. I'm tired tonight - we walked a lot! Have a great night. |
