  • Good Morning, Flowers! We got up to a gloomy sky and "wet." It's drying off and the weatherman promised sunshine for this afternoon. It's supposed to be in the upper 80s this weekend. Bob left for the lake an hour ago; the contractor is meeting him there to measure the windows and Bob has some painting he wants to get done before the little people are around. I have a pile of magazines to sort through; one by one I'm letting the subscriptions lapse. I keep getting renewals and the current subscription still has another few months or even a year plus!

I lost 2.4#s yesterday at WW -- not sure just how, but I'll take it!

I have laundry to do and need to work on my church birthday cards. Have a fantastic Friday!

    Jean -- from Iowa!
  • Good morning ladies! A sunny day and already 75 heading for 85.

Tonight is movie night at the quilt shop so Glory and I will have our usual talapia and cole slaw at the Crab Shack before we go. Nothing else going on today but more work on my sewing room.

Jean - Congratulations on the loss! Keep up the good work. The cabin will really be nice when you finish the work. I've let most of my magazine subscriptions go and will not renew the ones I still have. They just pile up so fast.

I'm going for my walk now before it gets any hotter.
  • Finally Friday
    GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

All kinds of sirens going on this morning. Things must be happening out there. Gotten all the neighborhood dogs to barking. It is a muggy day here in the Heartland. I have been making up a shopping list for phase 2 on this program in which I get to introduce good carbs and fruit. Bake some bread. I really miss not having a sandwich with my soup but I only have till Monday to get through this. I really have surprised myself for being so good and not fudging this program one whit during this restrictive time. I think one of my first lunches on phase 2 will be a tuna sandwich and tomato soup. For some reason that sounds real good to me right now. My Peal a Poud Soup turned out yummy and I have several servings in the freezer now. I baked some cauliflower yesterday that was so yummy. Broke it up into floweretts and sprayed it with Canola spray and sprinkled herbs, grated parmesan cheese, and red pepper flakes on it. Baked it for 25 minutes at 400 degrees and it was so tasty, and so very low in points. I hadn't done that in awhile and don't know why. Guess I forgot how good it was. I think the fact that I have always loved veggies has been a big help to me doing this program. Today I think I will make a nice shredded cabbage slaw to use up the rest of that head.

SUSAN What movies do you watch? Maybe I missed something but are they quilting information ones? That Crab Shack sounds like a good place to have. We don't have anything like it here and that is a shame. We do have that fast food place but . . . Will said he will take me to Lobster Trap before they quit the shrimp & lobster deal they have going on. He takes me there and he orders a burger. Not much on fish but likes to go fishing. The RL is many miles away so you see we don't get there often.

JEAN CONGRATULATIONS on your loss. That is a nice chunk to be gone. Your gloomy skies are ours also and we are promised 80's also. It will be nice to have the cabin all fixed up by the time it gets visited for fun in the sun times. I only get 2 magazines now and am so glad I let the other ones lapse. I get what I want out of them then dump them. Lots of folks fall for that "renew trick." If you renew evrytime you get a notice you can be getting that magizine 5 years or so. Gotta watch those marketeers.

DONNA FAYE How goes it with you this day?

Have a wonderful Friday Magnolias Type at y'all later

  • Back At Ya On Friday
    GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

I am taking a bit of a break to have a cup of coffee before starting some more housework. I put a slab of top round steak in the crock pot with a can of sliced mushrroms, sliced onion, and couple of garlic cloves sliced. OH, and I sprinkled some Worchestershire sauce all over it also. That, my friends, will be dinner along with some garden greens and tomatoes. I really love having a crock pot. I might even make some corn and potatoes for Will. He is really a meat and potatoes man that loves corn. Not so much on greens but does on occasion eat a salad. I really don't mind making him the veggies that I can't have right now. I know he will be glad when I start baking bread once again and he does like the whole wheat kind. I made tuna sandwiches with wrapping the tuna mix in loose leaf lettuce leaves for me and in a bun for Will. I also had a cup of Peal a Pound soup. I am going to have another cup of that for dinner and put my allotment of pinto beans in it.

Sounds like Will got the tire fixed on the riding mower for I can hear him out mowing. It will sure be nice when they plow it all under and reseed the lawn. It will all look so nice when it all comes up then he can mow it.

Well my break is just about over and it has been nice chatting with you. Have a great evening Magnolias, type at y'all later
  • Afternoon gals! Today has been a kind of dopey day for me. I had to take a Flexeril last night because I somehow pulled a muscle in my right arm and it was so sore. I slept with a heating pad and then wore a sweater over it to keep it in place. It is still a bit sore, but nothing like what it was yesterday.

Maggie: Hang tough the hard part is almost done. You are doing great!

Jean: We have you beat! We have 90+ temps coming at us for a whole week. I haven't even been outside today, but Jack came home this morning all hot. He is at therapy right now being twisted and turned. He is going to stick a couple marinated steaks out on the grill tonight. That and a baked potato and some veggies. Congrats on your losses, WTG!

Susan: Sounds like you have your evening planned. Hope Glory's car is coming along ok.

Please keep my older sister and her hubby in your prayers. They had to rush him to the hospital either Wed or early Thur morning. He is the one in the nursing home with MS. His bp dropped to 78/48 and he became septic. He has gotten a bit better in ICU but he isn't out of the woods yet. She can't take time off work to be with him so I know she is stressing out over being at work and not knowing what is going on. He is having short time memory loss, doesn't know her all the time, etc. It is a sad situation.

I better get out of here. I have three socks on needles and I work on one for awhile then switch. I still have Thomas's socks to put on needles too so I am going to be sock busy for quite awhile. Have a great weekend all! Faye
  • Good morning ladies. It is supposed to be today. I am going to try and get the rest of one sock completed so the pair is ready to wash and block and work on the other two.

I got tickled at Kelly's facebook posting pictures of T. He had let his hair grow and he looked like an early Beatle. It was long and shaggy and his pic at a restaurant showed him with his hair short again. It was like night and day. They took him to Joe's Crab Shack I think and he got one of those steampots, plowed through the whole thing and a piece of chocolate cake and he is a total stick. He is so funny. His dad is very thin but doesn't eat a lot but the boy can put the food away. As a grandma, I hate to see the boys grow up, but that is what happens I guess. Everything moves forward.

Poor Jack came home from therapy completely pooped yesterday. I think though he knows it is for his own good he will certainly be glad when the therapy is all done. I think we discovered what was causing the discomfort. We think he had a bit of inflammation still that was from it healing then being used a lot because the dr gave him a prescription for a higher dose of naproxin and it took the soreness right away.

Nothing much else happening here. I am making chicken and noodles for dinner tonight so I put the chicken in the crockpot and let it cook most of the day then debone it.

Have a good day everybody and the rest of the weekend. Faye
  • Good morning, ladies! Cloudy with a 40% chance of rain today.

I was down .8 at WW this morning. I didn't sleep well at all last night. Woke up at 3 am and never did get back to sleep, just tossed and turned until 6 and then I got up. Maybe a nap this afternoon but I want to clean out the fridge and pantry today. I'm taking tomorrow to quilt. I still have those 100 9-patch blocks to make.

Faye, Glory's car is still in the car hospital. It needs a new bumper and other parts and they aren't easy to find for a '65 Mustang. I can hardly keep track of one pair of socks at a time let along multitask on several pairs at once. I hope your shoulder is feeling better.

Maggie, the movie last night was Ghost Town. We usually have chick flicks, not quilting movies. We stitch as we watch. Congratulations on sticking with the hard part of SBD.

    Hi, Jean!

    Have a good day!
  • Good Morning, Flowers! Our weather is really in a tizzy this morning! It's very windy and we're in a wind advisory for 40 mph winds and strong gusts. We've had enough rain to get everything wet, the sky has dark clouds, but the sun peeks through as the wind moves the clouds on by. It's not warm nor humid yet. The washer and dryer are buzzing away, and the dishwasher is next. My couch is so heavy I can't move it, because it is half on an big area rug and half on bare floor, so plan to have Bob help me do that so I can vacuum underneath it. After moving the piano I can just about imagine what's under the couch.

I got my plant from Maui yesterday! I had forgotten all about it until Bob called to tell me it had been delivered to the office; we had it shipped there so it wouldn't sit outside if I wasn't home. It's an Anthurium -- the red heart shaped flower. It's in a hunk of lava which has to be soaked in water whenever it dries out. It should be interesting; I hope I can keep it alive.

Susan -- I hope it is not miserably hot for you today. It is too early for 90 degree weather -- at least up here. What movie did you see at the quilt shop? Any plans for today?

Maggie -- I have looked and don't have your soup recipe. Would you send it to me please? Thanks! I'm wondering if it got lost when I switched computers. I know that some of my "saved stuff" went into cyberspace for no apparent reason. The round steak dinner sounded delicious!

"Gma" -- I hope your arm is much better today. We are grilling steak either this noon or tonight. Bob is the griller and he is out chasing down a couple of farmers for their acre/crop information. I'm sorry to read about your sister and her husband; they are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us updated! Good luck with getting your socks done in time.

The dryer is buzzing so is ready for the next load. Have a great day!

    GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is warm and muggy so we are running the air and the fans. The roofer guy brought Will some good dirt so he is out there filling up some boxes to use to plant more garden. The boxes are three feet wide and six feet long. That size is easy to care for because you can walk all around them and reach to the middle to tend the plants and keep them weed free. Keeps critters from digging the roots also. As I type I have a couple of Schwans small steaks thawing so Will can grill them for dinner. Looks like we are all having the same type of meal. After I get off here I am going to whip up some sugar free fat free pudding to be chilling. I have salad greens all ready and I can fix some corn on the cob for Will and I can have green beans and my cup of pintos. Now that's a plan. Tomorrow is our eating out day and I know I can eat OP "out there."

JEAN The wind came back with a bang in your neighborhood didn't it. It is still just a bit breezy here but not windy but may change any minute. Your plant sounds like one my mother had and it sure was pretty. My dad sent it back to her once when he was "at work" over there. With his job he was required to go over and supervise his men working there on occasioon so he always sent my mother someting neat. I am sure you will enjoy your plant. Here is the recipe for you:

PEAL A POUND SOUP a la MAGGIE
    0 POINTS per serving
Place in a large pot or in crock pot
Simmer for 1 – 2 hours or overnight in crock pot
    1 head of cabbage, chopped
    3 large onions, chopped
1 bunch celery cut in chunks
    4 cloves garlic, chopped
    2 envelopes onion soup mix
    2 T Worcestershire Sauce
1 T powdered bouillon, beef flavor
3 cans chicken or beef broth (99% fat free)
    After simmering add:
2 cans whole green chilies, chopped in chunks
    2 cans mushroom caps
    2 cans chopped stewed tomatoes
Season as you wish while cooking.
For example I use a few sprinkles and drops of:
    Liquid Smoke
    Maggi
    Cajun Spice
    Red Chili Flakes
    Freshly ground Black Pepper
    Italian Seasoning
    Etc,
What ever your taste prefers (I like mine spiced up)

SUSAN you are going in the right direction. Yikes, you sure didn't get much sleep there. Something going on with your system maybe. Thanks for the 411 on your movies. Speaking of girl movies have you gals watched Steel Magnolias?

DONNA FAYE Pulled muscles are no picnic. Take care of it like you are and it will be better soon. My heart goes out to your sis and her husband. He is in a sad way with MS for sure, poor dear. Prayers are surely going up for them. Knit away and it will get done. Jack will be better soon ~ he has to get better with all that hurtful therapy. Why does therapy that is supposed to help folks end up hurting folks. Guess you gotta move what doesn't usually get moved.

Ragg Mopp tells me it is time to go outside so I am outta here. Have a lovely what is left of this weekend. Type at y'all later.
  • Susan -- I must have been typing when you posted this morning because I didn't see it until just now. on another loss at WW today! You have the scale moving in the right direction for sure! Will it take long to make the 100 quilt blocks? I hate nights when I wake up and can't get back to sleep. No matter how I lay I just can't get comfy again while other times I just roll over and go back to sleep.

Maggie -- Thanks for the recipe. I think I had it confused with the WW veggie soup that they promote from time to time. The thermometer says it is 88 here but it is so terribly windy that "things" are blowing between yards and down the street. I haven't been outside at all today. Ernie whines to have the back door open and then doesn't like the wind blowing his whiskers.

In the Sioux City paper there was a picture of a cat that someone shot in the forehead, between the eyes, with a nail gun. Someone saw it running around and called animal control to pick it up. A vet performed surgery and got the nail out, but he isn't sure if the one eye will regain sight or not because of damaged nerves. They named the cat Amazing Grace and have had several offers to adopt her. I know there are people in line to deal with whoever did the deed -- I'd like a chance too! I'm pretty sure they will never find out unless the person would be dumb enough to brag or else someone saw them do it. Makes me mad when people are mean to animals!

    GOOD EVENING MAGNOLIAS

Well it looks like we are going to Montana Mikes for lunch tomorrow which just suits me just fine for we have a $10 dollar coupon they gave me on Mothers day to spend before the month is out. I can surely stay OP there and Applebees for dinner. Sunday we eat out now only. Unless something comes up of course.

JEAN That is so cruel to shoot a dog or cat with anything. (Let the vets put them down if they are too sick or injured to live). On my list of low life are child molesters and those who are cruel to animals.
  • Good Afternoon, Flowers! We have a cloudy day with a breeze, which is so welcome after yesterday's wind, heat, and humidity. We went to early church; Bob went up to the lake to finish some painting and to put a new faucet in the sink w/o having little "helpers" around. We're hoping the new windows will be put in next week but probably not. We checked prices at Menard's but the contractor thought he could get a better deal through a lumber yard, but then they would have to be ordered. We also found another "stone" guy to maybe do the fireplace. I saw his work at the hospital remodel last week and come to find out he just finished working on the house at the end of our block and did one across the street a few years ago. He's from a little town 5 miles away so we could shop local! We're still waiting for a call back from the company in Sioux City that we visited March 3rd! They assured Bob they would like the job but had a deadline on a bank project first.

Maggie -- I'm thinking you are enjoying your lunch at Montana Mike's about now! I have heard that children who are mean to animals grow up to be abusive adults to animals and people alike. I can't imagine living in fear of being abused physically, mentally, or emtionally.

I put off cleaning the upstairs bathroom yesterday so guess that will be my next project. Enjoy the rest of your day!

    Jean -- from Iowa!
  • Hello ladies! We are cookin' in Memphis and not just on the grill! It is mid 90's here today and the humidity is terrible. We went to the grocery store early this morning and Jack made a couple burgers on the grill but we haven't been back outside since then. It is even hot in the house with the ac on 70.
Bout time to turn on the box fan and circulate the hot air! lol

I finished Jackson's cartoon socks so will wash them tomorrow and block them. I am getting ready to put T's socks on the needles. I told Jack he will like the socks. The yarn color is called "ecology" and Thomas is big into "green" environment.

Jean: Hope Bob doesn't get too hot doing cabin work. It is definitely something Jack would be putting off if it were here this week. It is awful here and I think this is just the beginning of what summer is going to be.

Maggie: Hope you had a nice like at Montana Mike's. We haven't been to Applebees in quite awhile as there isn't one very close to us anymore. I like Applebees especially their Chinese chicken salad.

We are watching the Cubs game and it is becoming a squeaker. I am trying to halfway watch and halfway not since we are ahead only by one run but our pitcher just struck out the 3rd batter in the bottom of the 8th so hopefully we can put on some more runs during the ninth.

Now that you are totally bored by baseball talk, I will scoot out of here. Have a grand Sunday! Faye
  • Good morning ladies. I got an hour of sleep last night because I had leg cramps. I started checking my meds and two of them can cause cramping in the legs. Goody, I exchanged leg swelling for leg cramps. I am trying to get in a lot of water today and walk around a lot to help that out. Hope it works.
I am also really working at eating right and more importantly working on some other issues I think are interferring with my trouble staying focused.

I watched a couple episodes of hoarding last night and the psychologist told the one woman something that exactly what I should do instead of doing what I am doing. I can't really go in to it for various reasons let's just say it kind of helped me open my eyes to some things about losing weight that is the same with these people that hoard.

I hope you all had a nice weekend. I finished Jackson's cartoons socks and am washing them this morning and put T's socks on the needles. It is a self-striping yarn and it is way cool. I think he will like them. I am deciding whether or not to make Jackson's red and blue socks slipper socks instead. They are pretty thick for socks and he definitely couldn't wear them during the summer. I did find some cute spiderweb buttons I may buy and put on them, we shall see. For you crafty ladies, isn't there this liquid stuff you can buy at craft stores that you can put on the bottom of socks and it sort of rubberizes them? I am going to have to check that out when I get done here.

Well I here the washer is finished so need to get the clothes out and get the other load in. Jack has therapy today so will be home early. Have a super start to the week. I am off to eat some oatmeal. Faye
  • Good Morning, Flowers! It is cloudy this morning and the humidity is high. Stuff in my fridge was even damp, and that's never happened before. I suppose it will be the next thing to need a repair. I may have to break down and turn the air on this afternoon. It does cool down some after dark, but our upstairs bedroom is hot when it's time to go to bed.

Bob's AZ brother will be passing through here next weekend, on his way to the lake. He has acquired more territory for his job, everything west of the Mississippi now, and will be driving back to prospect new accounts. I plan to do some more digging and pitching this week!

"Gma" -- I've had leg cramps and they are no fun! Once in awhile I even get them in a toe or my foot. I hope you can figure out a solution. Bob did get quite a bit more done yesterday, which is good since his brother is coming. Bob told him there are no curtains so not to run around naked! I'm guessing you can buy the rubber stuff to put on the bottom of the socks. I'm sure the socks will be a hit with both boys! I have watched the Hoarders a time or two. I have "nothing" compared to them, thank goodness!

I need to get busy. Enjoy your day and remember to !

Jean -- and from hot 'n humid Iowa!
