Steel Magnolias ~ #37

GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is another rainey day in the neighborhood ~ AND I love it. "They" say it is unusal weather for this time of the year for it should be HOT but don't take into consideration the 7 year cycle weathr takes. I am thinking hard about making one of these empty rooms into an exercise room and getting a nice piece of equipment. I used to use a Nordic Track ski machine and loved it. I actually didn't use it for a clothes rack. With my foot the way it is I won't be able to use that though. I am thinking about the Bowflex Treadclimber which is a 3 in 1 fitness machine. Combines the features of the three best cardio machines: elipticals, steppers, and treadmills. I will have to see if I can do this one with my brace on. I have got to do something. I don't want to buy something that I won't be able to use.

DONNA Have a wonderful time and do be safe. I know you have made all the necessary preparations for this get away and I do want you to enjoy it and be hastle free.

JEAN At least hair does grow back after a too short cut but unfortunately not so quick for your picture. Maybe you can have a decent do though with it for that pic. It probably isn't as bad as you think it is anyway!

Everyone have a lovely day this Thursday. Type at you later.

GailR 09-11-2008 02:04 PM

Happy Thursday afternoon!

It's been a very good day so far. Program-wise. :) I've been doing FLEX but I've decided I'm going to start CORE tomorrow. I've been thinking a lot about Susan's weight loss journey and what she's said about the CORE program in past posts...and I'm going CORE. Tomorrow is my grocery day so I'm going with a CORE list of foods and stocking up. I've been doing a lot of thinking about the FLEX-friendly foods I've been eating; they are filled with way too much sodium. Wayne is a meat and potatoes kind of man. He rarely eats snacks. So I really don't need the Chex Mix turtle bars or the Quaker Oats Breakfast Cookies...even if they are filled with a lot of fiber.

Maggie, what a coincidence--you talking about exercise equipment--I walked on the treadmill this morning. I know my treadmill was in shock when I turned it on! It's still working after months of collecting dust (not really--I do dust it when I dust the room). At least I can say I haven't used it as a clothes hanger. I walked it while watching Miss Potter. Good movie about Beatrix Potter.

Donna Faye, have fun on your trip--I know you will. Wayne and I need to plan a little getaway soon.

Susan, sounds like you had a lovely evening! One of these days I'm going to join a quilting class. I just need to buy a sewing machine. Maybe I'll put that on my Christmas wish list.

Jean, sending positive vibes and kind thoughts your way because I know you're back in school!

Later everyone!

Gail

Good Evening, Flowers! We got up to rain this morning and the sun came out this afternoon. It's 75 degrees and humid as can be. I refuse to turn the air on because I know it is supposed to cool down tonight. I am getting more "eczema spots" on my fingers and legs. I called the new dermatologist's office to see if I could get in earlier than Oct. 17th. If I want to come and be there at 8 AM, they might be able to work me in. But I have to call and let them know I am coming. GRRRRRR! I finally whined enough to get an Oct. 3rd appt. They don't have a waiting list in case of cancellations; we are supposed to call in daily and check. What kind of a deal is that?

Susan -- Did you put everyone's challenge quilts together to make one large quilt or is each one hung separately? I'm glad you had an enjoyable time.

Maggie -- We used to have a Nordic Track; I wasn't coordinated enough to get the hang of it. Now we have a treadmill. It's in the basement and hasn't been used at all for awhile. I need to get going on it again. Walking on the weekends isn't enough exercise for what I want to eat.

Gail -- I just bought a sewing machine but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I have one in a cabinet that has all the bells and whistles on it, but I wanted the slim arm for hemming and mending. I'm wishing I would have gotten a cabinet for it. Perhaps I'll give my old machine to Beth and invest in a cabinet since I know I will use the machine more if I don't have to drag it out every time I get the urge to sew something.

I need to make a path through the clutter. I can't believe how fast it piles up when I'm in school all day. Have a relaxing evening and a fantastic Friday tomorrow!

gma22 09-12-2008 05:26 PM

just a quick post to let you know we are safe. we made the decision yesterday evening not to go to houston because the hurricane had moved north and we are glad we did at is it now in a direct path with Houston. they have cancelled the games so that isn't an issue and the hotel did refund my money so we were only out the $100 for the game tickets. we went to st louis instead and are having a very nice quiet weekend! Tomorrow is casino night so wish us luck! lol

Jean 09-12-2008 05:59 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It's dark and dreary here today, but no rain yet. It was a typical Friday with the kids ready for the weekend before the day even got started. Two girls got up and walked out of a reading class that I am in; they went to the principal and said they were tired of the teacher yelling all the time when they didn't do anything. There are several boys in the class and they are all behavior challenges. The teacher does yell and the kids don't pay any attention to her. We are supposed to get the computers next week, which will divide the class, so maybe that will help. I hope so! We are taking two 5 gallon buckets of corn to Beth tomorrow. Maddy's teacher sent a note home asking if anyone could get some shelled corn. Beth knew her dad could get some at the farm. I'm not sure what they are going to do with it; I'm anxious to find out.

"Gma" -- When you didn't post yesterday I was wondering which direction you decided to go. Have a nice weekend! I hope you win BIG!!!!!!

I need to make a grocery list and head for the store. Life would be so much simpler if we didn't have to eat!

Have a great weekend!

Finally Friday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

Yesser we have another rainey day in the neighborhood which just suits me fine. Everything is so nice and green. Folks are saying because of the cooler August and Sept. we may be in for a long hard winter. Not much going on here ~ did some shopping for necessities and the Schwan man came this day. We like to keep quickie stuff in the freezer because we have so many "drop in's" which we love and want something to feed them that doesn't keep me in the kitchen too long. And it isn't just ice cream.;)

GAIL I know a few who are on the Core plan and are doing quite well with it. I do watch the sodium and don't add salt to anything. I have to decide what I want to do for exercise and which machine will work with this foot. That is good that you have been back on your treadmill.

WELL well DONNA When I was readinng about the Texas weather on my Fox website I just knew you wouldn't be heading down to that way. Have fun and don't loe too much.

JEAN I certainly hope that the computers will be of help. If all schools are a mirror of yours I do shudder to think what our future is going to be like with them in charge. I know you are just hanging in there until you can retire and you deserve a medal for your efforts.

Everyone have a wonderful weekend coming up and stay dry.

Friday After Dinner

GOOD EVENING MAGNOLIAS

I am one happy person ~ And "What makes her happy?" you ask. Well let me tell you. Since this was a 24 point day for me I made a good breakfast which did use several of my points ~ and then we were out shopping and had a sandwich for lunch. I only had 6 points left come dinner time. Well let me say that I love having those frozen WW dinners in stock for the beef stew one is only 3 points and it is good. I made myself a nice green salad with just a whisk of dressing (love those spray on spritzers) and had some cottage cheese and canned peach slices for all my 6 points. Now I am sipping a scrumptous cup of coffee in my tall stainless container that keeps it HOT as long as I have any in there. Now aren't you glad I came here to tell you that.:cloud9: I do so love it when a plan comes together.

QuilterInVA 09-12-2008 08:56 PM

Good evening, ladies! A busy, rainy day today.

Quilt Guild this morning and the final day of the Challenge. I'm so glad that is over. After we got the quilts down, we had to take the quilt racks apart and take them back to the storage shed. Then I went to lunch with 4 friends. I have to say I did indulge a little - had a cup of onion soup, a side salad, and half a slice of key lime pie. It was good, too.

I went to Big Lots just to see what they had today. I needed high fiber English Muffins and they have them for $1.50 (Thomas) and I got 2 boxes of original Fiber One for $2 each. I have to do the real grocery shopping tomorrow, the fridge is bare of fresh veggies and fruit and the milk won't last beyond breakfast.

And then I went to Curves to work off my lunch.

FAYE - I was hoping you went somewhere other than Texas. Glad you are safe. Have a good night in the casino and play $1 for me - if I win a million, I'll give you some.

MAGGIE - I hope you find the perfect way to exercise. I feel so good when I do.

GAIL - You'll be amazed at how much better you will feel after you've been on Core for a week or two. Your body will love you. And it sure is nice not to have to count points for everything. You also feel full with less food. I made my first quilt entirely by hand piecing and hand quilting. Hand work is still my preferred way, although I do have a very nice computerized Pfaff in a wonder cabinet that opens up to 9 feet so there's tons of room to work. I find hand work to be very relaxing.

JEAN - All the challenge quilts were finished quilts. Some were bed size, some were wall hangings. Exercise on the weekend only isn't even enough to be healthy. The recommendation is 30 minutes a day for health, 60 minutes for weight loss (those are minimum times) every day, alternating cardio and aerobic activities. I walk on the days I don't go to Curves and I have 10 pound weights at home that I use for simple exercises.

While everyone is thinking about exercise, the US Department of Health and Human Servies puts out a wonder FREE "Exercise: A Guide from the National Institute on Aging" 80 page booklet on exercise and nutrition that you can order online at http://niapublications.org/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=30&cat=Healthy+Aging . There are a lot of free publications there, its a good place for info.

I did post yesterday, but it was on the previous thread.

Have a good evening!

QuilterInVA 09-13-2008 09:07 PM

Good evening, ladies! What have you been doing today?

I went grocery shopping. Triple coupons this week so I got some extra stuff. Plus great sale on veggies and fruit - 98 cents for celery, tomatoes, mushrooms, green beans, and zucchini and 68 cents for peaches, plums (red and black), nectarines and red pears for $1 and I got strawberries for $2.00 and VA apples. Yum. Then I went to the fabric store...

Jean 09-13-2008 11:49 PM

Good Evening, Flowers! I finally made it to the grocery store this morning; I know why I try not to go on Saturdays. I keep running into people I know, have to chat a bit, and it takes me twice as long to get back home. :smug: It was raining this morning and by noon the sun was out. We took Maddy's corn over to her, went to Penneys to buy new bed pillows, ate a quick sandwich from a drive through hamburger joint that has been there for 60+ years, and headed back home again. We visited with MIL and walked a short walk around our area before it got dark. There's almost a full moon tonight and it is so pretty shining on the lake. I was surprised to see some boats out after it got dark.

Maggie -- I've heard that we are in for a wetter colder winter this year. I don't know if the prediction is from a reliable source, but we've had fairly mild winters the last few years. I suppose it is about time for a real zinger. I don't think our school is any worse than any other that has the mix of students we have. The blacks coming in from Chicago have caused a lot of grief for the law and order enforcers as well as the employers and school system. The nursing home hired two women who promptly stole TVs and Wii games. They were caught because each entrance has a security camera. How dumb is that? Kids coming in from other big cities have a different attitude about life in general and no one is going to change their mind. There are some really nice kids, but the bad ones overshadow them with their behavior. Our principal and asst. principal, plus a few teachers, are going to be gone to some meeting for 4 days next week. I'm not sure who is going to be in charge. :dunno: What kind of salad dressing do you spritz on your salads? We probably don't have it if it is new. Congratulations on your 24 pt. day being a success! You did good! :cp:

Susan -- I'll bet all of the different Challenge quilts were quite a sight to see. I'm glad you enjoyed your lunch out; it sounded delicious! Thanks for the exercise and nutrition link for the booklet. I will pay it a visit!

My dryer is buzzing so I will fold one more load and call it a day. Have a relaxing Sunday!

Jean -- from Iowa!

QuilterInVA 09-14-2008 11:27 AM

Good morning, ladies!

JEAN - I love the salad spritzers, too. They have been out for more than a year. Wishbone and Ken's put them out, in the section with the other salad dressings. I've tried all the flavors and they are good.

I went to Church this morning and now I'm doing laundry, then wash the kitchen floor and my work is done for this week. Heading to the sewing room this afternoon.

Have a good day.

Jean 09-14-2008 04:01 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It is a dreary, windy, rainy off and on kind of day here. I've been doing laundry and sorting through magazines and catalogs. It must be the start of the Christmas shopping season because the catalogs have begun to arrive. I thought maybe with postage and handling so high we wouldn't get as many this year.

I'm anxious to see what the price of gas is on Monday morning. The TV keeps saying that it will be $5.00 or more. I suppose with Ike, that the oil refineries are shut down again. :(

Susan -- Enjoy your afternoon sewing. I will look for the salad spritzers on my next trip to the store. If they've been out that long we just might have them too. :D

Have a nice rest of the day and a marvelous Monday tomorrow!

Jean -- from Iowa!

QuilterInVA 09-15-2008 11:04 AM

Good morning, ladies! A beautiful day but its going to be hot - there is hope however because a cold front comes in tonight.

Jean, 1/4 of the gas supply for the nation comes out of the Houston area. The governor of VA invoked the price gouging law so stations here are not allowed to charge excessive prices. Most are around $3.50. There were 2 in VA Beach, one just outside Oceana Naval Base that jumped to $5 and they were reported and now face huge fines.

Faye isn't here but I see the Cubs had a great day yesterday. It's really too bad she couldn't go. I hope she won at the Casinos at least.

Maggie and Gail - hello and looking forward to hearing from you.

Jean 09-15-2008 06:09 PM

Good Afternoon, Flowers! Bob is at church for his first practice of the fall. They sing on Sunday so I have a feeling it will be a long practice. I have card club tonight and should do a load of laundry before I go. Today was an interesting day at school. In the behaviorally challenged reading class the teacher got into a power struggle with another student. He started taking things off her desk after he spent time trying to lean against my desk, which I kept moving away from him. He was trying to read a library book while she was going over material for the class. She finally took the book away from him and he went ballistic. :tantrum: She kicked him out of class and sent him to the office with me right behind him. It's a class that meets during part of the lunch period so he had to stop and high five all of his friends in the student center. I don't know what his problem is because I had him last year and he was nothing like this. Another student from that same class was put in an 8th hour study hall with me; he is another jerk and does nothing in or out of class. That study hall teacher just lets him do nothing so I'm not about to try either. :dizzy: Her name is Hope and last year was her first year (4th job in 5 years . . .); I call her Hopeless because she is! ;)

Susan -- Our gas prices didn't go up today like we thought they would. It is warming up here again also. This has been a strange summer/fall for weather that is for sure!

I'm off to start a load of clothes and unload the dishwasher. Have a terrific Tuesday tomorrow!

Jean -- from Iowa!

gma22 09-16-2008 02:51 AM

Good early morning ladies. One of those sleepness nights I have, so I decided to catch up on posts and let you know we are home safe and sound.

We got in yesterday afternoon so I was able to get all the stuff put away and have all but one load of laundry folded and ready to put back away. I pick up the dog this morning and go to the post office and restart the mail and later on return the rental car.

We had a nice time. We aren't winners, but we don't ever expect it. We don't spend a lot of money so don't lose a lot of money. I tried to play Baccarat with Jack, which is his favorite, but ick so I got up, cashed in my chips and went to find a slot machine. I played a couple, but never won anything and didn't really care for any of them so headed out to the casino lobby and Jack was sitting out there. We had forgotten to make arrangements and he and I had been wandering all over looking for each other. We went up and had a bite to eat at their buffet then headed back to the hotel. We did get hit by really hard wind and rains on Sunday morning. The winds were about 60 mph and we had to go out and get breakfast in it. I had bought ponchos for the trip to Houston, but it seemed a pain to deal with them just to go into the restaurant so we just got a bit wet. Jack more than I as he let me out in front of Cracker Barrel.

Susan: I chuckled when I saw you mentioned the Cubs winning and hoped I did. The game I imagine you are talking about was the one where the pitcher pitched a no hitter. We had to listen to it on the radio through Jack's laptop. We were whooping it up in the room so much listening to it I imagine the guests in the hallway wondered what we were doing.:o Our room was right on the corner next to the elevators. We did get to see the very last out he made on tv as ESPN broke in from their regular programming to show his last out for the no hitter. Jack had mentioned turning on ESPN to see if they were going to broadcast the results. It wasn't like being there but Jack and I decked ourselves out in our Cubs regalia and sat and listened! We did go and get a hamburger at Steak and Shake afterward and the girl commented on the cute baby (Jackson's picture on my shirt.)

Maggie: We have a treadmill and though I haven't used it since my surgery, it is going to get used again now. I have to start out really slowly again, but I will work it up to longer and longer. It actually is great for me to hang my summer pants and shirts that can't be dried in the dryer on! I use it for that all the time.

Jean: Sounds like you have had an interesting few days with kids at school. Did you get your car back with your gps all installed and working right? I really liked having it for our trip. It got us around to restaurants and such pretty darn well. We got into St Louis on Thursday about 10 pm and it was raining so it was great not to have to depend on signs to get to the hotel as we stayed at a different one this time.

Gail: I am almost done with the last hat and it is so cute. I am glad I didn't totally follow her hat as mine is much cuter with just two colors, red and white with the heart buttons. I have to get a set of dpns today to finish it up.

Well gals, I am going to get on the recliner and see if I can go back to sleep for a bit. You all have a good Tuesday!

Faye
