Atkins to Sugar Busters

Hi everyone. I just wanted to see if anyone else has gone from Atkins to Sugar Busters. I am on day 4 or is that 6:dizzy: lol I forget. I just wanted to know if anyone else has done this. How successful where you. Did you gain weight initially and do you ever get over the guilty feeling for eating carbs?

I hope to hear from you soon

Katie

Hello Katie... I did the Atkins program for just over 1 year. I just grew more and more hungry for carbs especially fruit. I also don't like much meat and had started to really dislike meats. I switched to SB and wow what a improvement. I feel healthier, enjoy my meals and frankly am a much nicer person. During my period on Atkins I had to start chemo-therapy and the program just wasn't what I needed. The switch to SB was wonderful for me then and is still great. I've been losing weight slowly but that's my own fault for eating larger servings. There are many gals here that have made the switch and they all seem happy. Good luck on the program!!! this is a great forum and I'm sure you will enjoy it..Lori

Hello

Thanks Lori for your response. I am glad that you feel better. I mean that is really what this is all about right? I am pretty happy with this to. Atkins makes you lose weight quick but if you have a forbidden carb you gain it right back so quickly. That is what I am going to like about this way of eating. I am hoping to lose between 12 and 20 pounds. We shall see how I feel after I hit 170.

Sorry about the chemo. That is tough.

Take care

Katie

Pancho 06-05-2003 10:21 AM

Hi Katie:

I, too, was on Atkins for 2 months. Although you can lose the weight quickly, you can put it on more quickly by eating just a few carbs, because you are consuming so much fat in your diet. I lost 8 pounds in the first month, and then went on vacation for a few days. I stayed on plan, except for the last day, when I ate a few no-no's (nothing too bad). When I got back, I had gained 5 pounds back. With this WOE, I can have a little splurge once in awhile and I don't gain at all. I know to just "splurge" in moderation, and not get carried away.

I had a problem with so much meat and all the fat. I do have the low-fat frame of mind, and now that I combine lower fat with no sugars, I am on a roll.

In comparison: I was on Atkins for 2 months and lost 13 pounds. I have been on SB for 1 1/2 months and have lost 8 pounds. I am exercising and drinking my water, and I don't overeat all the time like I found I was doing on Atkins. I do eat fruit now and lots of veggies, and feel so much better.

I only did Atkins for a few months, so getting over the carb thing only took a few days. My mom asked me that other day how many carbs was in something, and my response was, "I don't know, but the sugar content is ____ grams." It's funny how you can train your mind. I will never eat all that evil sugar again!

Good Luck!!!

cathlaur 06-05-2003 11:03 AM

Hello

Pancho that is what I am hoping for. Better eating habbits but when I splurge I dont gain tons of weight back. I also found that with Atkins. I cant see how that would be good for your body. I am really hoping to see some weight loss in the next couple of months. I will keep you posted .

Thanks for your input

Katie

I'm converting over from the Atkins diet as it just doesn't seem to be for me. A gal at my Jazzercise class does this SugarBusters, so I thought I'd try it.

I'm looking for something to help me drop 10 pounds, relatively quickly, and something that I can continue to follow for the rest of my life. I don't want to have to diet anymore. Is this a good plan for that?

If anyone has other plan suggestions, chime on up. I've pretty much removed myself from the carbs (potatoes, pasta, bread, tortillas --which KILLS me) but I do enjoy an occasional Mich Ultra now and then. I need a diet that doesn't plummet your system back out of kilter if you have a few beers on the weekend while still watching out for those bad carbs.

Any thoughts?

Hi glad you dropped by! This board is much more active! I wanted to let you know that the main the action happens on the weekly support board. They start one post every week and everyone just keeps replying to that post. Keeps the server from having to store a lot of stuff.

amazahn 06-16-2003 10:43 AM

I just got off Atkins too. I feel kind of scared eating so many fats. I am going back to sugar busters. My husband has had incredible luck with sugarbusters. This is my first day. I pray for results. I sure enjoy a bowl of shredded wheat instead of eggs and cheese all the time.

hi....I'm trisha

I have been on atkins for 5 months and I want to change to sugar busters, but am so afraid that I will gain weight....actually I started 3 days ago, and I have gained five lbs back...Yugh...this morning i ate:

1 cup of uncle same cereal
1 cup of skim milk
1/2 cup of berries

1/4 cup of walnuts
one cup of low fat cottage cheese....

Is this an ok diet...I was still so hungry after I ate breakfast that I ate the cottage cheese at 9:00 am...

help

amazahn 06-19-2003 11:52 AM

Well I think it is just a little more safe as far as cholesterol. My hubby has lost 40 lbs on sugar busters and eats just fine.

summer*rain 06-19-2003 02:18 PM

cholesterol

Actually my cholesterol has gone to to almost normal 206....and my triglycerides which were at one time 980....with medication I got them down to around 500.....and now after 5 months of atkins, they're under 200.....which is incredible....

for lunch I had a hamburger patty on a small, low sugar bun made by nature's own...

Do You have to limit the food on sugar busters.....or is it like atkins where you can eat when you're hungry and not be limited by calorie count?...

amazahn 06-19-2003 02:28 PM

Sugar busters recommends eating 3 meals a day with no more food than a dinner plate can hold. The recommend chicken and fish so it's kind of watching calories and fat as well as sugar. You can have brown rice and whole wheat pasta which is nice.

GhostDeen 07-07-2003 08:28 PM

Hi there! I'm also a former Atkid. I only lost 13 pounds doing Atkins for about a year (you could say I hit a major stall) -- then gained back all thirteen, plus 4 more. :(

I've only been doing SB for a couple of days, but already it seems so much more liveable. Plus, I had to sacrifice a lot of my favorite foods on Atkins, like brown rice and black-eye peas. I think this will be a change I can stick with.

Interesting story: I knew a lady on another board (a low-carb board) that did Atkins for a year, and only lost 3 pounds. She started doing Sugar Busters instead. Within six months, she had dropped 45 pounds. So, for some (and hopefully me!) this is a wonderful plan. Good luck to everyone!

Adkins vs Sugar Busters

;) When you think about it Adkins and Sugar Busters are very similar. I try to follow Adkins and try to stay under 60 grams and I basically it's eating like Sugar Busters. I feel much better and don't crave sweets as much.

Durian 08-09-2003 02:22 AM

I have been doing SugarBusters for almost two years. Granted, I've had periods where it was heavily modified, but in general, I don't eat a ton of carbs/refined sugars.

My mother is on Atkins and finds that it works best for her. She has no intention of trying SugarBusters. I, personally, couldn't handle the strict regimen on Atkins.

I think it's really what one can handle/live with and what works for one's body. :)

Good Luck,

April Marie

Considering making the switch....

I am wondering if anyone has actually made the switch from Atkins to SB. If so, have you had any problem with getting hungry?

Also, how does the fat allowance differ between the two? I've only been on Atkins for 2 months but I've really gotten spoiled being able to eat regular salad dressings, cream in my coffee and regular cheese. :T

Another thing, I've collected a lot of really great low carb recipes. Do you think these are ok on the SB diet?

I do have to say though that I'm not so sure all this fat is good for me and I think SB sounds like a much more balanced WOE.

If there are any suggestions for making this change I would really appreciate it. :sunny:

Debelli 08-30-2003 05:27 PM

Hi MIKA and WELCOME. You may want to copy your question, or I can do it for you, and post it on the SB WEEKLY SUPPORT BOARD where you tend to congregate and will definitely get more answers to your quesiton. I personally can't comment on the switch as I haven't done Atkins, though I know a lot about it. You may gain some weight as you transition, but that's not fat, it's just your body adjusting to carbs again. Many of the gals on the board have made their way from Atkins to SB and they can give you their 2 cents.

The difference in fats is that SB recommends that approx 30% of your intake come from fat. One thing is you can have the regular salad dressing like on Atkins as long as they don't have sugar in them. Same goes with the cream and regular cheese - but you do need to make sure you don't overdue it with the fats.

Please, do come join us on the weekly board - we'd love to have you!

Atkins to Sugar Busters

Hi Everyone :)
I am just about to start Sugar Busters after my cholestrol and triglicerydes went up big time from being on Dr. Atkins for 1 month. My doctor said..that I am always in that 1% that have a different reaction than what is supposed to be. :(
My son pointed me to Sugar Busters. But I haven't a clue what to do...yet. Can anyone please point me in the direction of where to start..or what to read or what to buy ?
It felt so good, reading about other people having problems with Dr. A ! I am sorry for your problems...but it just felt good to know that I am not alone in this mess.
Any info would be most appreciated ! ;))
A Wonderful Day to All,
Sweet_Toof

Some seem to have worried while on Atkins, about the amount of fat. Latest research shows that it is not fat, but rather the amount and kind of carbohydrates which controls cholesterol and triglycerides, so don't worry about that.

Marishka 11-11-2003 02:26 PM

I don't understand the difference. I eat meat/fish/eggs/cheese, veggies, berries, olive oil & lemon juice on salads, plain yogurt, and low carb pita bread. I have been on Atkins for 34 months and have lost 111 lbs. When I choose to have a higher carb item, I go to Maintenance for the meal; and then back to OWL. I have periods where I plateau and lose weight slowly, but as a result it is no longer a diet but a way of life.

So what is the difference?

amadeus4313 03-03-2004 10:31 PM

Hi Mary, I recognize you from the lowcarb board. The maintenance phase of Atkins is very much like SugarBusters. Both are based on the glycemic index. Sugar Busters is higher in carbs, but they are low glycemic carbs. Both plans are wonderful - just depends which one is more your style.

skinnymini 03-04-2004 10:44 PM

Just jumping in here real quick, I enjoy reading through all the forums on this site. But what is the difference between South Beach and SugarBusters?

DonnaD 03-05-2004 06:30 PM

If you asked me today, I would say on sugar busters you don't lose consistantly, but I am truly disgusted and depressed.

Auriana 03-08-2004 11:30 AM

Hello Everyone

I am just starting a switchover from Atkins to SB. I did Atkins for about 8 months and lost 35 lbs and have gained 8 lbs in the past couple of days since trying to swtich over. Please tell me this is temporary. I will say that I have not been real good about drinking my water and I also started a more serious exercise routine.

LOL, I am a grown woman, too old to be afraid of eating fruit--giggle.
For those who made this switch successfully, did you experience a temporary gain?

Auriana

vmoore 03-11-2004 08:54 AM

Anytime you change your diet you body is going to make some adjustments and hold on to stuff for a few days. Your body should adjust in a few days and the extra pounds should go away. The most important thing is your eating healthy.

mlia 03-11-2004 07:57 PM

I did Atkins from November to January 24th before I went on vacation. I came home and went for a regular yearly exam and the Dr. asked me about dieting (I am about 75 pounds overweight). I mentioned the loss of 17 pounds on Atkins and he suggested I do a bloodwork to make sure there weren't any issues. That was on 2-2. On 2-10 I found out I had diabete type II and my cholestrol was really high. So because of my cholestrol he suggested I do more of the Sugar Busters diet. So far it's worked great. I enjoy the occasional fruit and other things I couldn't have on Atkins. I eat lean red meat occasionally but mainly fish and chicken. My husband has adjusted to the diet easily.

And I've lost 15 1/2 pounds between 2-10 and yesterday when I saw the Dr. So I feel like I am eating a more balanced diet and losing weight better.

I have the Sugar Busters diet and it has really helped.

DonnaD 03-12-2004 08:48 PM

Mlia, 15 lbs in a month is fabulous. that is wonderful. I've been type II diabetic w/high choles for over 10 yrs. On meds but this is it. I have to do it this time or it's insulin. NO WAY! I had to inject during my pregnancy and I really don't want to do it again. So I must get the weight off. My doc also says the plan seems diabetic friendly. So even though I left a depressing post the other day, I truly feel the way of eating is a way of life that all diabetics, borderline diabetics and recovering diabetics should be on. I also joined ediets. Its a little overwhelming but I like the meal & exercise journals and the support is good. But I still love everyone hear. I just substitute sugar buster ingredients into their plan. Sugar busters is a very versitile program.

So take it from someone who waited too long. Get the weight off now. You will see the blood sugar #'s go down. Good luck :crossed:

:D :D :D

You got it! And South Beach phase I is Atkins induction. That is why I have been opposed to south beach on principle. this doctor took 2 plans, combined them and made a pile of money.

JoAnn 03-15-2004 06:54 PM

Hello Mary,
You said it ABSOLUTLEY CORRECTLY!!!! South Beach is a combination of the 2 plans. I wish we could have thought of that, and made MILLIONS, like they have.
LOL LOL
Have you started any particular plan? I guess you can say I am doing South Beach Phase II, and Sugar Busters (which ever you want to pick) ;-))
I have lost 14 pounds, since Jan. 26, 2004 (SLOW WEIGHT LOSS), and I need to lose at least 25 more! I sure hope I can hang in there and be patient enough for this to happen!!!! I am hoping to get a cookbook that will maybe help me not be soooooooo bored. I have heard of one called "The Diabettic Four Ingredient Cookbook" by Linda Coffee. Sounds like my kind of a cookbook ...........4 INGREDIENTS!!! ;-))
Hope to hear from you Mary. Let me know what plan you are doing and how you are doing. I need all the support I can get! ;-))

Mishi 03-24-2004 01:09 PM

Hi!

I am a newbie here! *waving*

I started Atkins on April 3, 2003 and last week I made the switch to Sugar Busters. I switched b/c SB! appeals to me so much more right now. I was through all the rungs in OWL but I felt very trapped and was cheating more and more. So, I talked to an online LC buddy (Monet) and was moved to investigate SugarBusters! What I found was a sensible plan that fit my needs. So far, so good and I hope to be a big loser with SB! soon, too!!

sxyredhead 03-26-2004 12:10 PM

Mishi:

I'm new to SB! also - I was a die hard atkins girl but was getting sick of the limited choices of foods.

Try posting messages on the Weekly Support Board - you will get many more replies.

Hi there,

I have also made the switch from low carb to low glycemic (Sugarbusters).

For those concerned about gaining weight, please realize that when you switch from very low carb to higher carb (even good carbs!) there WILL be a weight gain, but it's only WATER weight from the carbs. I myself gained five pounds in a very few days going from an Atkins-type diet to Sugarbusters. I am confident as time goes on, the pounds will go down. Common sense tells me I can't gain five pounds of fat in just a few days. But water retention is common when you stop low-carbing.

I feel so much healthier on this eating plan, that even if I don't lose weight I'd still stick to it, because of my genetics - diabetes is rampant in my family.
But I do hope I lose! I'd be happy with even a very slow loss!

So don't feel bad about putting on a few pounds of water when switching.
