Should we worry about CARBS ?

  • I am new and hate to bother you guys with questions, but I am very confused when something has 0 Sugars in it and then I will look at the carbs at nearly 30!!!!!

Should I worry about the Carbs at all? Or just concentrate on the amount of sugar in each serving?

For instance, I know SB suggest using the 100% Whole wheat pasta and actually it is not much lower at all in sugar or carbs???????????? So, what is the big deal about eating the Brown stuff?????

Sugar Busters is confusing to me. Maybe because I have been on Atkins, PP, WW.........you name it and I have been there. But, there was always something to COUNT so you knew you were staying in control.

Do any of you guys have particular amount of Sugar GRAMS that you allow yourself daily?

How much weight have any of you SB lost? Is it working for you?

Hoping to hear from y'all real soon!

  • Good questions! As I understand the SB concept, amount of carbs doesn't matter...it is the kind of carbs (sorry for the repetition here...I wrote this to you in another post). See, when the more processed grain (which is what regular pasta is, for example) hits your digestive system, the processed grain is so broken down that your system doesn't have to work hard at all to turn it to sugar in you. If grain is far less processed, it still has some of its outer "shell" that your digestive system has to work on before it can get to the grain inside...so it passes along your digestive tract past where you do your immediate digesting and where the greater burst of insulin occurs before it breaks down. I hope I've said this right because for me, this helped me understand what all the fuss was about with the kinds of grain and condition of the grain you eat. Anyone else out there who can explain it to Jo Ann better?

I'll be sending you some Glycemic Index sites in a little while, Jo Ann...I'm writing this away from my desk at the office and I have those sites tagged as favorites on that system at my desk.

Ask more questions and we'll all get in the act! It's fun talking these things through...just keep hanging in there and being faithful to the plan and that weight you want to be rid of will get!
  • LKF..........................
Thank you so much for taking your time to explain to me so well, about the differences between the "Brown" and the "White" carbs! You explained it in layman's terms to where a Dummie like me can understand!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much and I will be looking forward to the Glycemic index when you get the chance to send it?

  • JoAnn--Welcome to SB. If you want to get in on MORE action and get more responses to your questions, try joining us on the current weekly support board. This should get you to the board for the week of Sept 2 through Sept 8:
    http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/show...4&pagenumber=1

Then jump in to the conversation and ask away. We are happy to answer. But be sure to hit "Post Reply" instead of New Thread or your message won't show up on the current board. Hope to see you soon.
  • Hello Gator Gal...............
I look at all the forums. Wonder why the active members only go to the weekly forum and look and none of the others? That surprises me!

    Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Joann,

What LKF explained to you was good and I'm going to add a little more info to this...

You do want to watch your carbs too. SB suggests that at approx 40% of your daily intake come from carbs and to limit starchy carbs to 2-3 a day. Portion control is also very important as well. You surely can't at a cup of cooked pasta and count it as 1 starchy carb. 2oz of a sweet potato is considered a serving, not an entire sweet potato.

As for grams of sugar. True, you can eat a serving of something that has up to 3grams of sugar per SB RULES and SB doesn't say to keep below a certain numbers of grams a day, but I've read on other sites that you should limit your added sugar which depends on your daily caloric intake.

As for checking the other SB BOARDS, we should look at the other boards, you are right. The way the boards are now are all new to us, we use to have all the boards together on one big board. I am trying to find a way to keep track of new threads that are posted as well as new posts on older threads and will try to find a way to get this done if it can be done. BUT, you can be assured that if you have a question and post it on the weekly board, you will definitely get a reply there.

  • It really does get easier the more you do it... I think everyone gets confused at first.. Heck I'm still asking questions...
  • ME TOO
I am SO confused! I am not un unintelligent woman, but I'm very confused with this diet. Granted I have not read the book as yet, I can't get it till Friday and all of them at the library had been checked out, but Sheeeeeeeeesh! Everywhere you read, you get contradicting advice. I have considered doing SB, I have been on Atkins, and as I said, I'm just plain confused about the plan, and I'm a bit confused with the board to...guess I'm not as smart as I think I am...........LOL
  • LADY,

Read the book and then it will be easier to ask questions. The book can be a bit confusing as well, but we're more than happy to help dispell some of the information.

Please join us on the SB WEEKLY SUPPORT BOARD. We mainly post there. Since we started the new board layout I haven't been able to check the other boards regularly, so it's not that you are being ignored, just haven't ironed out some of the stuff I need to as of yet.

  • Joanne that is one of the things I LOVE about SB! I hate counting things. When I eat out (which has been a lot this summer) I just skip all the bread and potatoes things and eat the veggies and meat. Just need to watch the dressings!

I've lost 15 pounds, went from a size 3X in shirts to a 1 X, pants went from 22 to 18 and those are real loose now too! My potato loving 14 year old started last week and is really doing great.
I'm not excising which is amazing. This is a great way to live!
