Nobody Warned me.....
OK, ok......when I first started this WOE, I made a HUGE mistake & ate some sugar free chocolate. This resulted in me being super gassy & very deadly. (I even got sent home from work - yes I was THAT bad!)
So today I'm at the mall & I go into a coffee shop & see that they have a sugar free mocha. Assuming it was made out of those yummy syrups I had one. THAT WAS A MISTAKE!!! My stomach was VIOLENTLY cramping up....df & I were in the middle of grocery shopping when it hit me.....I had tears down my eyes. My entire torso hurt (and I didn't smell pretty either!) DF is coughing /gagging in the car on the way home. When we do get home I fall on the bed....coat & shoes still on. I was in some serious pain! DF is lighting candles.... Has anyone had this problems with coffee? What questions do I need to ask or what ingrediant(s) to I need to avoid so I don't repeat this again. |
Avoid anything that ends in "itol" like sorbitol, malaitol, etc. They are very often used to sweeten SF candies, chocolates, etc.
The good thing about them is they work like a charm if you are backed up and they definitely limit the amount you consume in one sitting  Hope you feel better. |
Yep, it is the sugar alcohols that do it. They are in many, many lo carb products. read labels and look for the things listed above or anything that states it has sugar alcohol (Most products that tout the "Net Carbs" on the front are actual carbs - sugar alcohols)
Those flavored syrups are almost pure malitol I think. I find I can tolerate a little bit like some ice cream bars, but too much gives me the GI distress you mentioned. |
Poor stinky smelly Sooon  Sounds like your system is verrrry sensitive to sugar alcohols... I've had that happen to me only once but I had ALOT of SF chocolate that caused it.. You might want to go back to that coffee shop and ask to see what is in that syrup or what they used to make it SF.. But in general
Stuff made with sugar alcohols would be Mannitol, sorbitol, Xlitol, maltitol, maltitol syrup, lactitol, erythritol, isomalt and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates.. So check on the labels to see that IF you try SF again, you can determine if they all cause you major distress or if its just one of them.... but, hmmm, based on your experience thus far...maybe SF just aint fer you doll. Davinci and Torani syrups are sweetened with Splenda... however some of the Torani I noticed does have other SF products in them... So Stick with stuff sweetened with Splenda when you can. |

Soon~~I'm so sorry you had to suffer. I think you are the first person that I know who has been sent home for being gasy:hug: |
The Evil OL Family strikes again! Great laxative though.

Now you've got me thinking.... I was running all afternoon today, and didn't have time to sit down and eat. Normally I would have grabbed a grilled chicken at Chik-fil-a, but didn't do that because of the bun, so while I was in Target I bought one of the SB meal replacement bars. I'm on phase 1 so it wasn't entirely 'legal' but I was headed to a the school valentines day party and no way was I going to face cookies and cupcakes with a growling stomach!:) Anyway, I noticed about an hour after eating the bar my stomach was cramping a bit and I had gas (sorry). This evening, after a wonderful dinner out of sirloin and double portion of veggies...well lets just say I barely made it home! I wonder if there was sugar alcohols in that bar? Has anyone ever had a reaction to the bars? |
Soon, you should be fine having lattes (or other coffee drinks that involve just coffee and milk) with SF syrups made by Torani or DaVinci. Both are splenda based and shouldn't cause problems. I've found that the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (if you have one near you) makes their Ice-Blended mocha (which is to die for!) with Splenda, and shouldn't cause you problems either. Otherwise, ask what's in the mocha before drinking. In my experience, almost anything SF and chocolate has malitol in it these days. I can't have malitol, so I check all the time, and it's frustrating how many things have it! On the other hand, it does keep you on the straight and narrow... ;)
I've found that "Eat Well, Be Well" makes sugar free chocolate bars with just Splenda...they make a plain and one with almonds. They are divine! :D I also had a SF mocha iced coffee at the cafe at Borders bookstore and had no problems. They make it with Torani syrups. But, I had the hot version of the same thing and they swirled the top with a mocha syrup that obviously was made with sugar alcohols. Having never had the hot version before, I didn't think to ask if it had different ingredients...and before I knew it, I was in a world of pain. :barf: Uggh! We both have to remember to ask what's in stuff! Hope you feel much better very soon! |
Some people have adverse reactions to the "-itol" sweeteners; the level of reaction varies a fair bit.
Some people also have adverse reactions to sucralose, which is commonly used in sf syrups, but I can't remember just what that adverse reaction is. I know my MIL won't touch it for that reason, though. |
I can't eat any OL sweeteners
additionally if I have too much splenda it's headache time! |
Craftin, yes, there's definitely malitol in the bars...may be other things too. :(
Here's some things to think about, okay? In P1, make sure you plan your meals...plan ahead so you have food with you when you know you'll need to eat and think ahead about possible triggers and things that will make it hard for you. Have a plan for dealing with them. Honestly, in order to get rid of the cravings in P1, you CANNOT cheat. I know that's frustrating to hear, but it's just 2 weeks of doing it perfect...P2 is much more flexible and it's easy to jump on and off plan as needed, though the more you jump on and off, the slower your weight loss will be. In P1, though, no cheating. So, start over, and do it right this time...if you know you can't deal with it right now, just do a modified P2 (as few starches and fruits as possible) until you can do P1 right, okay? I don't want to come off as a meanie here, but I swear that doing P1 right will make a world of difference for you...both in weight loss and in how easy the rest of your work will be (less cravings). That said, also be aware that the SBD products are not always in line with the plan. <sigh> Very frustrating, but true. Read the ingredients and plan accordingly. For instance, there's pork fat in one of the pizzas...I know that Dr. A didn't mention pork fat as a good fat. :yikes: :faint: Kraft obviously took some license with the food. In addition, meal replacement bars won't really fill you up or keep you full...and you'll find yourself eating more later on, IMHO. Try to keep some food with you that will help. In a pinch, in P2, try going to Wendy's and get the chili and a side salad. That'll fill you up and keep you full. Okay? |
