I am Land Locked

Good Morning Chicks,

I don't know if any of you will remember me, but I was going very strong on SBD for quite a while and then it seems that I fell into the Grand Canyon.

I feel very fortunate that I have not gained a significant amount of weight back, but I feel awful.

This all started when I went to the DR. and he said that my cholesterol was high (209), which is not that high. He suggested that I try weight watchers because he said that SBD could be unbalanced. I did what he said, but I just feel really bad.

I want to come back to the beach, but I was wondering if any of you ever had a similar situation happen?

I know that I was eating more cheese than I should have maybe and I wasn't getting all my veggies, but I didn't think my cholesterol would be elevated. It was a wake up call.

I also hit a nasty plateau in June and I got really discouraged. I admit that I began to overdo the carbs and that I wasn't really following the plan to the letter.

I always felt so good on Southbeach and I was in control. Again, I don't know if you all remember me, but I was at one time very, very serious about this way of life and I think I can do it again.

I guess I just need a little positive reinforcement :)

Thank you for reading my post and have a great day!

Come on back...we saved your towel for you!!!

Welcome back! I remember you, of course. South Beach can be great for your cholesterol. You do have to watch how much cheese you eat and I go for the egg substitutes myself. Try eating oatmeal for breakfast when you are on phase 2. I do that and it is supposed to help with cholesterol. Watch to make sure your meats are lean and make sure that things with saturated and trans fats are not sneaking in. SBD has brought my cholesterol down into a healthy range for over a year now.

However, for some people there problems with cholesterol are not just diet related. Also your cholesterol is not very high. How are your ratios? Remember that the total is made up of the good cholesterol as well as the bad cholesterol. If you are using olive oil and canola oil then your good cholesterol is probably elevated and that is a GOOD thing. My doctor really looks at the rations as well as the total. My triglycerides are also way down now.

Do you know what your parents' cholesterol levels are? Did yours go up after being on SBD? Or was this first cholesterol test you've had? It could be genetics, if you have a family history of high cholesterol, it's harder to get it down.

Come on back, just modify what you were eating. Cut back on the eggs, maybe switch to egg beaters or use egg whites instead of the whole egg. Cut back on the cheeses or switch to fat free, eat a lot more beans and veggies. Switch from red meat to more white meat poultry and fish.

My DH has it and I've added oat bran cereal, niacin supplements, flax seeds or oil to his diet and it's starting to come down some. He doesn't know what all I do for him to keep him healthy

Welcome back
Sarah

Thank you Gals!

As to my cholesterol I had a test done last December and it was 114. That was why he was concerned. He did a genetic marker test also and said that most people who are in an unhealthy range are around 18 and mine was 4, so that was not the problem. He also said it could have been what I had for dinner the night before and not to be "very" concerned. I ate A LOT of eggs, like every day! That really may have been it. Hee Hee

Ok....I have tried the egg beaters...I actually just this morning tried the egg beaters with cheese and chives...I can not eat these things...they taste so weird to me...Is it just me???

Welcome back to The Beach, Sunnybunny!

Barb0522 10-27-2005 11:12 AM

I've never eaten the cheese and chives ones. I thought they had something that was not allowed but I could be wrong. I eat the regular, garden vegetable or the southwestern usually. I normally add mushrooms, onion/green onions, and cheese to them and quite often put them in a ww tortilla. I use them in recipes too. The southwestern is good in meatloaf.

Yes I am friends with Mrs Charleston. She, too, is on WW now. She had a cholesterol issue as well. She is just 25 and hers was like 270. We must have been a bad influence on one another... :)

Sunny, :welcome3: BACK! :D

I agree with Barb...SBD can be great for your cholesterol, but you have to be very careful with your fats. Try using Fitday this time to track your calories from fat. Make a promise to yourself that you simply will NOT eat any cheese that isn't low fat. That includes eating out. Then make sure you are also including good fats in your diet...the ones that lower your cholesterol, like Canola and Olive Oil. The oatmeal should help. Try using a butter substitute like Benecol or Smart Balance...not only do they keep your cholesterol from going up because they don't have saturated or trans fats, but they actually can lower your cholesterol over time!

Try other sources of protein in the morning besides eggs...you'll find tons of suggestions for breakfasts in a sticky in the FAQ.

Glad to have you back with us, hon! :D

Is there any type of butter substitute that melts right, so you can cook with it?

sarahyu 10-27-2005 11:55 AM

I don't like the eggs in a carton either. I tend to use one yolk with several whites when I make eggs. With DH, I limit his egg yolks to just a couple a week.

I'm not sure if any of the butter subs melt right. I know that Smart Balance doesn't. I read an article about Benecol and it's sounds promising.

Using fitday is a great idea. You can keep an eye on your saturated fats.

Sarah
