Labour Day Chat - September 5

Good morning. You'd think The Girls would want to sleep in on the last day of a holiday weekend but they are kicking up a major fuss. I swear they know when I log on!

Back in a bit!

Mamacita 09-05-2005 06:44 AM

Good morning, Chickadees~~ :coffee:

You'd think *I* would sleep in ONE day of the holiday weekend, but NO, I have to be up before the birds even start chirping.

My sleep pattern got all goofed up b/c dh had to work yesterday evening into early this morning. He came home about 4 hours ago. I'm under orders to wake him 'before noon'. He may have to go back to that same job today for a few more hours. No complaints--fat paychecks! Yeah!

I successfully loafed the day away yesterday. The most ambitious thing I did was make dinner for dh before he left for work. I also went out and bought a pair of bamboo knitting needles. After that, I watched TV, watched movies, and then fell asleep. That's what I call a truly lazy day. :D

So, how's the holiday over on your Beach Blanket?

ellis 09-05-2005 07:30 AM

Good morning, darlings!

Barb, that's wonderful that your city is opening shelters for the newly homeless. It just breaks my heart to think of what they're going through... :(

Mamacita, sounds like a lovely, lazy day.

Ruth, hugs for you and the girls. :grouphug:

DH and I made a bunch of freezer meals yesterday. :) Today I'm doing more laundry and tidying. Damn this big house!! It's too big, and we have too much STUFF!! And my kids are PIGS!!!
Going to get coffee... :coffee:

Ruthxxx 09-05-2005 08:01 AM

I'm back and they're back! :( Damned mice have returned so the trapline's been set. I hate to do it because they are cute but refuse to have critters in my kitchen - critters that I didn't choose, I mean! The Girls can stay.

Mamacita, disrupted sleep patterns are so damned hard to correct. I am finally managing to sleep later than 5!

Ellis, three words - THROW STUFF OUT! I've been doing that a lot and it's very liberating. Actually most of it is going to worthy causes. Do the kidlets have job lists? It worked for me - and you know my kids turned out OK. Actually they are both neat freaks!

It's a cool and glorious day and I'm well underway on my Labour Day labours! Sheets are on the line and my list is made. This afternoon I'll work in some front porch time and watch the summer people exodus. The Village loves the money in the summer but it's kind of nice to get the peace and quiet back after this weekend.

Have a wonderful Labour Day or Labourless Day - your choice! :cofdate:

kyemom 09-05-2005 08:20 AM

Morning girls!! I have been going to lots of cook outs this weekend. Actually have 2 more to go to today!! I am also taking the day off tomorrow, to spend with my littlest one. She will start Kindergarten on Wednesday. So, we will spend a day as big girls together. Hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day, and try not to Labor too much!! lol!!

pearshape 09-05-2005 08:32 AM

Mornin' chicks! Well, yesterday was my mountain hiking day. I went to my sites that were located up a mountain. Got a good workout in. I mustered up the courage to get on the scale this morning and I haven't gained anything so that's a good sign. Plus I'm all swollen like a balloon from PMS and my hike yesterday. Why is it that anytime I exert myself the next day I swell up? I drank so much water yesterday that last night I was peeing every 1/2 hour.

Tonight I'm going to try this saffron "rice" recipe and the Bombay Sole from the cookbook. Is there any end to the healthy substitutions you can do with cauliflower :) ! I also found this recipe that looks like an alternative to the legendary taco bake. I may try it soon and post it if it's good.

Mamacita: So sorry about your lack of sleep. I couldn't sleep until 3:30 am and woke at 7:15 this morning. I'm sure I'll be loading up on the caffeine and water today. Congrats on your lazy day! Don't you just love those :D !!

Ruth: That's too bad about the puppies. Oh well, maybe next go round. I'm sure they will be the luckiest little portugese water babies in the world.

Ellis: I agree with Ruth! Throw stuff out!!! I am a firm believer that too much "stuff" is not good for the soul...unless you happen to be an ultra martha stewart on speed type organizing machine  . Clutter makes me jittery, anxious, and just generally miserable. Have a lovely day!!

Everyone else, have a great holiday! :sunny:

Kiko 09-05-2005 09:09 AM

Good morning chicks!

Ellis During my last couple months of pregnancy my mom would come over and help me clean. We got rid of TONS of stuff and it did feel wonderful. The majority of it she took to a women's shelter, so I felt even better.

Mama Good for you on your day of laziness. We all deserve days like that!

Ruth I bet it is lovely to see the tourists depart. :) Enjoy your day and don't labor too much!

Pear Can I come for dinner? That sounds tasty!!

KyeMom How are you feeling about your DD starting kindergarten? My almost 4 year old is so funny when she talks about it. (She has a Nov birthday so won't go for 2 more years) She has no idea what it is, but thinks she is so ready to go. She keeps seeing the "big" kids from her preschool leave every spring to go to this magical place called "kindergarten".

Barb Working at home twice a week sounds like a great idea. I am curious to see if we have many kids enroll when we get back on Tuesday. This week is the 5th grade camping trip to Oklahoma, so there will only be about 30 kids left at school. Anyone that enrolls will think they hit the jackpot school b/c the kids that don't go have "Camp Thomas" and it is all fun activities. I am not going to OK this year as my baby girl is still so little. Hopefully it will be a fun week. Even if it isn't I can enjoy no papers to grade and not much prep work for the week!

Schatzi Our flower bed is a disgrace! I need to get motivated to do some gardening myself!

Me- Survived a picnic lunch with friends and dinner at the in-laws OP. Came home and ate popcorn with DD and a handful of chips. How stupid is that?? Make it through the social events that should be difficult... Oh well, a new day!! We are chilling close to home in an effort to not spend money or waste gas. Fine by me as DH is home again. :)

Have a super day all!!

kyemom 09-05-2005 09:14 AM

Kiko- I am really ok with it. My DS is going into the 3rd grade, so he will be able to walk her to class, and be there if she needs him. I have never been a SAHM, so I am used to taking her to daycare everyday....so I am guessing it will be the same thing..except she will now have homework. Also, she has the same techer that DS had, so i am very comfortable with that!!! (Until Wednesday, when I might lose it for a few minutes) :)

HistoryChick 09-05-2005 09:43 AM

Hello Ladies!

KristinJ 09-05-2005 11:41 AM

Good morning everyone,

Soon2BFab -- 1998? My Grandma Doe had your mom beat, we had to clean out stuff from the 80s!

The funeral went ok, some family dynamics issues there that will likely take me awhile to get over. I didn't stop to think that I was coming back home after the stores closed last night and that grocery stores aren't open today so Phase One is put off. Also, I ended up with my signature chest cold after the stress decreases and my cold medicine has sugar in it so it would be better to wait until I'm feeling a bit better anyway.

I did not use food to cope while away, so I'm pleased with that. I did eat crap, but it was because I was out with girl friends and really wanted to eat it and not because I was avoiding feelings. That in and of itself was a victory for me.

Glad to see everyone is well and enjoying their Labour Day (yes I am Canadian). Have a great day and thanks for all the support you give. It is SO appreciated!!

Kristin

Kiko 09-05-2005 12:27 PM

Kyemom Both of my kiddos have been in daycare since they were 7 weeks old, so I guess you are right on just the addition of homework. I am also looking at DD starting kindergarten as a "raise" as well. That will put $600 a month back into our pockets!!

HistoryChick Welcome back! We missed our annual vacation to Nags Head this year. We are already planning and trying to save for next year. :sunny:

nefarious_wytch 09-05-2005 12:43 PM

morning all,

Ruth -- i am so accustomed to mice in my aparttments its crazy (i'mused to living in damnp basements). in my last apartment, i was in my room reading and i heard my male roommate scream like a woman. I ran out and asked him what happened. He said he'd been sitting on the couch and a mouse (our new roommate as he put it) crawled right up his arm. that mouse had balls. lol.

Pear -- its true cauliflower is wonderful. I also love the versatility of jicama...raw, cooked, as french fries, chips, waterchestnuts. that's definately one thing i love about culinary arts...discovering the versatility of food. i made curry the other day with cauliflower rice. it was delicious.

to everyone else -- YEAH DAY OFF!

to everyone with kids going back to school or who are going back to school themselves. -- I am so jealous. i miss school.

Me -- I'm down at LEAST 4 lbs. I didn't weigh myself when i started back on P1 on Monday. But i did lose 4 lbs sinc i weighed myself on thursday. Yeah i'm so happy.

beach bum 09-05-2005 12:57 PM

Back again, :)Had veggies soup for lunch with a side order of okra & tomatoes. That should make the scale go down.

Thanks SCHATZI for allowing me to cry  ,Hopefully, SOON,the scale will be good to me next Saturday.

Welcome back HISTORY CHICK,Congrat for maintaining during the summer,I feel ther same about bridemaids dresses as you do,can't wear them for other occasions.

KRISTIN-Sorry:sorry: about your grandma, and for all the stuff you have to throw out now. I found an article with a good hint  go down to the basement & up to the attic and start throwing out your junk, once a year,so this doesn't iccuminate.

Hugs :) BB

Chickita 09-05-2005 01:36 PM

Goodmorning Beach Babes,

It's a perfectly lovely day on my stretch of the beach, with some much-needed sunshine. We're going to my parents' soon to spend the day.

Mamacita, I just love those wooden knitting needles. Whatcha makin'? I am working on a trial purse with beads in it, trying to make up a pattern. I went to crochet because I'm too new to knitting. Still knitting a prayer shawl, though.

Ruth, I'm with you about picking and choosing who I'll share my house with! No bugs and no uninvited creatures. Yikes!

Good morning to all and have a very lovely day off!

Well, I have to get my suit on and get moving. I'm taking my bike so I can get some riding in and then hop in the hot tub for a soak. Ah......

H-ko 09-05-2005 04:27 PM

Ruth - sounds just like my toddler - I swear, everytime I try to post or make a phone call, he starts acting up! Is it because he wants my attention, or is it because he thinks he will get away with it if I'm busy, I wonder? Silly me, how limiting! It's both! I can't stand rodents, even as pets. My SIL had rats for a while, and I just couldn't stand them. They are so...rodenty! I don't even like gerbils and hamsters, although DH wants a hamster and I'll probably let him ;) so long as HE takes care of it and doesn't expect me to touch it! I'm not even afraid of them, I just dislike the way they move, although rats and mice are the worst - that sort of furtive scurrying, skittery movement they do. Ick! I love sheets dried on the line - they smell so nice! Sadly for me, it's too cool to hang them out, so we will have to make do with dryer-dried. :(

Mamacita - I used to adore the bamboo knitting needles although I've switched now to steel circular needles. I can knit a lot faster on them, and I as long as I put needle tips on when I'm not actively knitting, I don't drop stiches! Not that I have time to knit these days, anyway.... Maybe while I'm participating in my online classes on DS's daycare days...I wonder if I can type and knit at the same time!

Ellis - I need to do that sometime when I'm not injured and when either DH is home or DS is not - the freezer meals, I mean. What sorts of things do you freeze? I used to freeze various casseroles, but most of those were not SBD friendly. We can't eat pork or shellfish, so those are out. That leaves soup, at least....Our house is a mess, too - we have WAAAY too much stuff for the size of house we live in! We were crowded before I got pg with DS - now it's even worse! We have stuff everywhere that we simply do not have a place for. And we're always getting rid of stuff - but I think it breeds in dark corners while we're sleeping!

Kyemom - have fun! You have to admit, the word "kindergarten" has a sort of magical sound to it, doesn't it? Especially if you have no associations, just something that the big kids get to do that you don't (yet)!

Pearshape - are you keeping up on your electrolytes? If you are drinking a whole lot of water, and working up a sweat, you might be low on electrolytes. Most sport drinks are sugary, I expect, so maybe you can find some other supplement at a health store or something? Failing that, have you asked your doctor about it?

Kiko - I wish I had felt that good during the last few months of MY pregnancy! I was in a lot of pain, plus I had labor off and on for a month before they admitted me (then I was on pitocin for over 12 hours before they did a CS - turns out that DS was a bit crooked and was stuck! Poor guy!). Besides all that, DS KICKED! And I mean HARD! He kicked so hard that I was in nearly constant pain for the last few months. I called him Pele before he was born. On the plus side, he's been extremely strong ever since day one. Lots of pre-natal exercise! But oh, how it hurt! If I recall, popcorn (plain, air-popped or popped in a pan in a little canola oil) is okay as an occasional snack, so at least that wouldn't be too bad - unless it was salty and buttery? Glad you at least made it through the picnic and dinner with the inlaws! And don't feel bad about your flower beds - mine are more like flower cemetaries than beds!

historychick - sorry about the job. I'm glad you had a nice vacation, though!

beach bum - Good luck on your ph1 "booster"!

soon2bfab - sorry you have to work! :(

Schatzi - what about currying cauliflower? Do you like curries? Have a lovely afternoon reading on your deck!

KristinJ - sorry you are having a tough time - I hope you are better soon! Stores here don't close on Labor Day (in fact, it's usually a big sale event), so I never thought about people not being able to buy groceries at least today!

Nefarious - YAY! on the weight loss! I don't miss school at all, but the online degree is a nice option. I guess in theory, I won't get a chance to miss it again, as I plan to teach!

Chickita - I don't mind SOME bugs (although those large Sphinx moths can be a little startling when they dive-bomb past your head in the evening!) depending on which bugs. We don't have anything too terribly icky here (like praying mantises! I CANNOT stand praying mantises! Too much exposure to Escher as a small child, I guess - they give me nightmares!). Spiders are right out (literally, they can go to town all they want outside the house, but woe to the spider I catch crawling up my wall or across my floor!), and we've never had rodents (knock on wood). I wouldn't stand them, either, if we ever did have them, though. Enjoy your bike ride and your hot tub soaky!

Me - still recovering from my concussion. I'm on my own with DS starting tomorrow, so I want my head to feel better by then! DS can sure make a lot of LOUD noise! He starts daycare on Thursday, which is going to be really hard for me. I'll probably cry a lot more than he will! Not sure if I want to weigh myself this week. I've been fine on the Beach, but TTOM should be here any day, and I'm feeling bloaty. I don't want to discourage myself by seeing the scale leap up (even if I know that there is a reason for it and that it is temporary), so maybe I'll wait until afterwards. I made a yummy soup for lunch, and I think I'll warm up some leftover for lunch for DH and me in a bit (late breakfast = late lunch). I need to wash linens and fold laundry and do dishes, but other than that I'm going to rest up as much as I can.

Have a great rest-of-the-day today!

weezle 09-05-2005 05:42 PM

Afternoon, chicks! I just got home awhile ago after a long day of sun and swimming. What a gorgeous weekend! Unfortunately, back to work tomorrow. Fortunately, it's only a 4-day work week. WAHOO!

This weekend has done me some good. I've caught up on sleep, I think, and I have tons of energy and feel pretty good. Too bad work starts again tomorrow. Yuck.

Ellis, I'll trade you. You can have my teeny tiny house, and I'll put all my stuff in your big house. :D

Tomorrow will be Day 1 for Terry. WOO HOO! I made him some parmesan chicken for lunches a few days this week, and I'm making a vegetarian taco bake for myself. We have a movie to go to in a few minutes, so I'd better get going.

You girls have a good night.

Barb0522 09-05-2005 06:42 PM

After putting in our three hours at the shelter yesterday, we were back at 8AM this morning. At 9 two thirteen year olds came to volunteer for their first time. So we showed them the ropes and they got to do lots of stuff with the cats, exotic animals and dogs. They even helped us feed some baby squirrels with a syringe. And right before we left we all got to see a hawk that had landed in the road and wouldn't move. We did end up eating lunch late because Brian was having so much fun he didn't want to leave. He even got to help clean up after the mother goat and her baby.

Tomorrow will be back to normal. We've been enjoying a marathon of Little House on the Prairie episodes on TVLand. We watch it daily. Somehow I prefer my son watching the stuff I grew up on than most of what is on TV today.

kyemom 09-05-2005 09:04 PM

History Chick- We are from the same area!! Small world...welcome back!!

weezle 09-05-2005 10:13 PM

Aaagghhhh

I can't stop eating. Everything I eat is OP, but I cannot stop eating! I've tried having some V8, I've tried veggies, I've tried everything that I can possibly have on this diet, and I can't figure out why I can't stop eating.

I have a feeling it's just a random craving coming to get me, but I honestly don't know what I'm craving. (It may also be TOM cravings, I don't know.)

Just thought I'd post my frustrations. Talk to you girls tomorrow.

nefarious_wytch 09-06-2005 01:05 AM

try some protein. I find when I'm really hungry (usually) its cause my body is craving protein.
