Please, I need help with SBD and travelling ????

  • My dh and I are both on SB and we are planning a trip, we will be staying in a motel (it is the only motel in the area)that has no restaurant open for breakfast and lunch nearby(except fast food) and since this is a club field trip, we will be spending a lot of time in the field and need ideas for meals that don't need refrigeration (other than a cooler). In the past, we would have brought crackers, chips, subs, fast food and donuts or the like but no longer.

Does anyone out there have any ideas for SBD friendly breakfasts and lunches that need little or no refrigeration? Yes, we can go out for dinner and keep to plan but not breakfast or lunch. All we can think of is peanut butter or canned dry tuna on ww pitas or breads but don't want that twice a day every day. I have read about the SBD bars that kraft makes but they don't sound all that healthy and since I am a diabetic, I cannot use those. . Please, please help! As a long time type 2 diabetic, the weight is coming off very slowly and I do NOT want to lose my way!

  • Hummus and vegs are favorites in our house. If there is a store around, you can pick up bags of ready-to-go vegs. Hummus is easy to make, if you can't buy it. It's nutritious and more filling than just dip. The hummus and vegs should go in the cooler if you are someplace very warm. Also, we love tabbouleh. Here, you can buy box kits - just add water, lemon juice, and olive oil (I think) plus chopped tomatoes, chopped cucumber, etc to taste. It tastes better cold, but probably could go unchilled for a while.

I'd also suggest looking into middle eastern food in general - a lot of middle eastern cultures are/were nomadic to a greater or lesser extent, so many of their foods are designed to travel.
  • Grammie, it's great that you're planning ahead! That's an excellent way to ensure success.

You'll find lots of great traveling food ideas by searching for "camping" using the search tool (upper right-hand side of this page). There are several SBDers who go camping and were looking for food on the go.

As for the actual meals, bring a cooler with you...fill with ice at the motel to keep it cool. Bring breakfast food with you. For lunch, make sure you bring the Fast Food guide (check out the FAQ for that) and print out the nutrional info from the websites of fast food companies in that area. Use those tools to help you locate a place that has food you can have and still say healthy and happy!
