Sushi Question

Hi ladies, I have some quick questions.

I am a huge sushi fan but I know the sweet rice is certainly not allowed on Phase I. But is Sashimi allowed? It is just sliced raw fish but sometimes, it is on a bed of rice. If I can ask for no rice, or eat around it, would that be alright for phase I? Also, the Miso Soup that is traditionally made is just Miso, water and tofu. And Wasabi is just horseraddish, sot thats cool too? So that would be fine for Phase I, yes? I just want to be sure. 5 days in would be a terrible time to slip up!

Gryff, I know next to nothing about sushi. On Phase 1, you should be able to have the raw fish alone, but no rice at all. See if you can find online what's in the wasabi...is it really just horseradish or is it mixed with something? The GFGCG says "Miso Broth" is "Good", though it doesn't say in what phase.

Hope that helps...have a fun evening. No sake, okay? ;)

Do you know that there is a NEW GFGC book out? I looked at it this weekend when I bought the new South Beach paperback. I will probably pick it up next time I get to Target since I noticed that each food has a column to indicate good, limited etc for each Phase. I think this may answer some of the questions we have had.

I love sushi too!

A trick that I use to making good sushi/sashimi-don (and legal) heh at home is to use the raw fish (allowed) and instead of sticky rice i use califlower crumble, i have not tried to replicate the sweet flavor yet, but i suppose you could toss it with some olive oil and splenda... then basically just roast califlower in the oven for about 30 min, make a bed of this and put the sliced fish over it with some nice pickled ginger and shoyu...

Gryff - I have some Kikkoman miso soup mix here and the ingredients are:

powdered red and white miso (soybeans, rice, salt), dehydrated tofu, dehydrated seaweed, modified food starch, powdered bonito (fish flakes), MSG, dehydrated green onions, powdered hydrolyzed soy protein, powdered kelp, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, succinic acid.

I didn't realize that miso was partially made from rice. The whole lists is pretty salty, too. So, I would say probably not, but the sashimi and wasabi should be fine.
