Need List of Low Carb - SB friendly Snack bars!!

  • Hello,

It's been a while since I posted and there are a TON of Low carb bars on the market. I need help, I know alot can be misleading.

I bought a box of Premier Odyssey Slim advantage bars they have only 2 net carbs on the packaging, but when I read the label it says:

    Fat 10g
    Cholesterol 5 g
    Sodium 170 mg
    Potassium 180 mg
    Carbs 24g
    fiber 1 g
    sugars 2 g
    s. alcohols 15 g
    Protein 18 g

Are these SB friendly... and if not can you reccomend some that are??

    Thanks
  • Kraft has out a line of bars that say South Beach Diet on them and it should have the blue signature stamp on them. They have a whole line of products out now. I would say those you posted are not. But even if you do use the SBD approved ones you should only use them sometimes accordin to Dr.A.
  • This is only my personal opinion but snack bars, whether approved by South Beach, Atkins, or whoever, provide a "crutch" that can lead me back to dangerous eating habits. I think I would eventually believe I could skip one of my important meals or snacks by filling it in with one of these bars and before I knew it, I would be back to grabbing something else "just this one time". Of course, I'm back on Phase I where I am really restricted to what I can consume. I suppose if I was in Phase III and just maintaining it would be a different story. I know how hard it is to make sure I'm eating the proper foods but at my stage, substituting anything at this point could be deadly for me.
  • I don't think the bars you post are SB friendly. First there is not enough fiber for the calories and for the fat. And while a little sugar is ok (like in salad dressings), I don't think these are good for SB.

Remember, the goal is to eat fresh foods, not necessarily low carns but GOOD carbs...
  • I've said it before and I'll say it again, "Eating snack bars are how we got this way!"

South Beach is about real foods.

Sure Dr. A. has approved the Kraft line but that is because he knows there are times we need to have something "convenient". They are not for everyday use. If you use them all the time, you are not really on The Beach!
  • Amen, Ruth.

Totally (love the line under your name! ), you know how to eat healthier than snack bars. They don't fill you up properly and even when made with good carbs (whole grains) and no sugar, they still cause your blood sugar to dip lower than regular food which leads to a feeling of hunger and a desire to eat more. Stay away from them. Honestly, there are so many better things to eat that you can make to eat on the run...there aren't many occasions I can think of where a bar would be a better choice.

That said, if you are looking for bars, you want something without any sugar (that includes cane sugar, organic cane sugar, honey, etc.), without dried fruit (has lots of sugar and none of the fullness you get from eating the whole fruit), with whole grains only, no rice (unless it's brown), lots of protein, and no bad oils (stick with things like canola, soybean, etc.). Very, very hard to find. And that's okay.

Instead, think about how you can make real food work for you. Post for us what your situation is and we can make some recommendations for things you can try. Okay?
  • Hi Ladies

I agree with you all. The South Beach Diet is a healthy way of eating. and I don't think Dr.A. meant eating this foods everyday.Theyr'e only for an occastion use.

    Hugs BB
  • Thanks gals, I don;t eat them all th time... but I thought for a fast BF food. I am not into making eggs and ham every morning... just grab and go. Thanks for all the imput!~
  • Sandra,

A few of us have tried the breakfast cheesecake recipe in the forum as cupcakes. Perfect for grab and go egg-free mornings!
  • In either the main book or the cookbook, there's a recipe for making little egg-muffins.

You can also prepackage cottage cheese with tomatoes and/or cucumbers in gladware the night before so you can grab and go in the morning.
