Fed Up
Where do I start? I am 31 and at an all time low...unfortunately low has nothing to do with my weight. It is at an all time high. 210 when I weighed last week (and this morning). It's confirmed--I am a single, fat chick living in a city of skinny, skinny women--not good for my self-esteem or my odds at dating. It's not like I didn't know or don't own a mirror, but denial is an amazing thing and I managed to miss the 20lbs that have leaped on--not creeped--in the past few months. And it's frustrating...especially because my eating, drinking and exercise habits have only improved over the past few years...but my weight has just skyrocketed. I would like to blame it on aging but I just don't think that is going to cut it.
Anyway, I saw a friend I hadn't seen in a while...she had started South Beach about 5 weeks ago and had lost almost 14lbs--and it looked like even more that!! She looked awesome. So here I am...inspired by her success! I just hope that I can remain motivated and be as successful as she has and I am sure many of you have been! So I am fed up-literally and figuratively :dizzy: and need a little help getting going on and staying on the plan! Please share your stories with me--it will help me have the faith I need to resist all the temptation of my favorite friends, Bread and Potatoes? Maybe you know them? Oh--and where do I get the fun weight ticker?? |
Go to the 3FC Features at the top of the page and click the link to get your ticker!
I am new here too and have had such a warm welcome! I know you'll find the same :) I understand what you mean about living in a city of thin women! I do too! :( You can lose weight; if you are read to make a change, you can do it and this is a great place to have come across. Are you going to follow the South Beach Diet? Metro- you can and will do this. Have you read the book yet? If not you should before you start. Also there is tons of info in the faq section and tons of recipies as well. Plus you will have the support from all these great chicks.
|
Welcome to the Beach! Jump right on in; the water is great!
|
Welcome, Metro. Be sure to check out the FAQ section and the Emergency Handbook for Phase I in this Forum. http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58182
Just a tiny suggestion....as a first step to your new life, how about changing your name to something more self assuring? Metrochick would work well. Let me know if you want it changed. Otherwise we'll probably just call you Metro because the chicks hate writing the word f**! |
Welcome aboard Metro! You are in the right place for support and help along the way! Be sure and join us in the daily chat!
|
Metro, welcome! Sending you big hugs, sweetie... you can do this!!! :grouphug:
|
I totally agree with Ruth! Metro, we have all been where you are! You can do this too and you will find that it is not so tough at all. I can't believe how easy and natural that it is.
I wish you all the luck in the world and just know that you can do this! ;) |
Welcome Metro ---
Many of us have personal success stories on South beach and some aren't necessarily weight related! Read up, stick to Phase 1, drink TONS of water and hang in there. It's well worth it! |
Metro, you can do this! :D Be aware, though, that with so little to lose (I know 20 seems like a lot to you, but truly, it's not!) and the fact that you are already following a good plan, you may lose more slowly than your friend. SBD is a way of life and a way of eating for life. It's about becoming more healthy and losing weight along the way.
If that sounds good to you, read the book, check out the FAQs, and give yourself a week to rid the house of off plan things (seriously...throw them out, donate them to your skinny friends, but get rid of them!), fill your kitchen with OP (on-plan) food, make meal plans, and figure out your strategies for any events that will come up during Phase 1. You want to do the entire 2 weeks with NO cheats or you'll need to start over to reap the full benefits. After Phase 1, you can meat the healthier versions of your old friends: Sweet Potatoes/Yams and Whole Wheat/Sourdough Bread! ;) They are tasty and won't drive you to eat everything in sight like the old friends did. Glad to have you with us, and Ruth is right...consider changing your name. We both know that you aren't a f**ty! You are a wonderful woman who is on her way to looking like her true self. |

 Welcome!

Fed Up
Thanks for the welcome everyone! And your point regarding the name is well taken--I shouldn't start out with such a negative--MetroChick it is...and it fits this webgroup all the more!
Laurie--I wish I only had 20 to lose! That's only what has leaped on in the past few months--I actually have 60-70 to lose depending on how it looks coming off! I did read the book a while back and luckily already owned the cookbook which gives you the basics as well as those great recipes. Plans are to hit the grocery store to stock up on the ingredients from some of the recipes that look right up my alley! I have had lengthy conversations with my friend who has been successful and she has given me some good advice-we always have similar dieting problems! So now I am on Day 2 and no cheating thus far--I know that isn't long but it's a good sign for me. I usually fall off a plan by lunch on the second day because I am tired, cranky and craving potatoes :dizzy: . I feel like this time will be different though! Maybe it is because I have been so exasperated with myself so I am ready for this change. My friend's determination/motivation and all of your posts are only helping to spur my determination on! I can't thank you enough for your warm welcome and look forward to being part of these email chats! Congrats on all of your weight loss (and personal) successes! http://www.3fatchicks.com/weight-tra...0/145/210/.png |
RuthXXX--That's a great suggestion regarding the name change...Please have them change me to MetroChick!
also, thanks for the link! That's a great help--I know I will be going to it frequently!! |
MetroChick it is. I'll get it changed for you - no need to register again. Be sure to keep on posting - it really helps to get and give support.
|
metro..! welcome!!!
:) <3 chels |
Speaking of chips...
Just got out of a meeting where they were handing bags of Doritos and Lays, FOR FREE. You all know I would choose to die in a giant pile of chips right? Well, I'm not even at PH1 yet and I declined :) I am proud of me. Proud of you too Metro! |
you did good
you did good honey. you are great.
|
 Welcome to the beach, Metrochick! ;)
|
Jen--you said no to Lays AND doritos??? I am impressed. :strong: Actually, they do that at work meetings all the time in my office...how cruel is that?? I just have to make a point not to look at the evil things. With you on the potato chips (and french fries)--my greatest weaknesses!! Did you lose the weight you have already lost on South Beach? Are you on a break from the plan or just making the switch?
So end of Day 2 and I am cooking up a storm...all PH1 friendly of course...and I have figured out that keeping myself busy cooking keeps me from eating everything in sight! But it is tough--I really want some sushi!! Which I love but I know I am craving it more just because I know I can't have the rice!! Thanks for the welcome Islander--looks like you are doing great!! :cheer: Have you lost 22lbs since March? Talk about inspiration for me!! |
Hi there Angel Shine--forgot to say thanks for the welcome!!
|
good advise hun
|
Welcome MetroChick :beach:
I've been off and on with the chicks for over 2 years. It is a great place to chat and find inspiration. There are lots of recipes here too. Stick with Phase I into day 5 and you will see a real noticeable change. I gained tons of energy and nearly lost my appetite to the point where I had to remind myself to eat! You can do this! I look at it as a whole new way of eating that will keep me healthy as I grow older (and the happy side effect is weight loss)! :D :goodluck: Sandi |
Love the new name, Metro! Sounds like you should be on Sex & The City or something! :flame:
Jenn, I'm super proud of you! Way to go!!! You too, Metro! Chips aren't really a weakness for me, but I think of a spread of pastries or Godiva chocolate and walking away...WOW! :faint: You girls are strong! :strong: |
See, I am not a chocolate fan, nor cheesecake (my straight friends tease me about being a lesbian and not a real woman because of it, )
Metro -- I tried South Beach for 3 weeks last May. Actually, at this time last year. I lost 13 pounds but when I switched to P2, I faultered. A lot. I thought I could do it some other way (used every excuse in the book) but SB is what worked for me so I have to find some patience and take things slowly this time. P2 doesn't mean eating anything I want  Over the course of 2 years I've lost the 50+ pounds. Started in March/April of 2003 with cutting out junk food and revamping my diet/caloric intake. I lost about 20 that way. Then I joined the gym and exercised. Lost another 20 or so. After the last 10 pounds, I've been at at virtual plateau for about a year. I'm ready to lose and lose for good. (a la Laurie!!! who I couldn't be prouder of!) :) |
:thanks: Jenn... you're too kind!
If you get a chance, you guys should check out Jenn's link. She's been working at this for a long time, and keeps going down. I think this might be her last home stretch ever. As Adia's avatar says, you have to fit into that dress! ;) I think your points about P2 are really good...it can be hard for some to deal with the switch, but it's important, for health and weight loss. It can be done. I know you can do it! :cheer: Jenn...no chocolate or cheesecake??? I find it hard to imagine gaining weight on chips...you must have at least one other vice... ;) |
Another gloomy day in the NE! The traffic was so bad that despite the rain, I walked the 25 blocks to work instead of taking the bus(which I like to do when it isn't raining!!) That's one way to get exercise in earlier in the day :rain:
Sandi--Thanks for the welcome...and for answering the question I was going to ask about when I am going to have a little more energy...I am hoping to really feel good by the end of the week. Planned to start a running class last night but got stuck at work as usual. So I guess I will have to sign up for the Thursday night class. I am actually dreading it--I am a HORRIBLE runner :tantrum: But I know it is such a good way to pull the weight off. I start every time in the beginner's class and have to laugh at how pathetic I am--but having the competition of other beginners helps...I don't like to be last :D I have a gym membership too but haven't really used in the last month and a half and need to get back on track with that as well. BeachGal--if SB goes well, I plan to look like I belong on Sex and the City!! I am already planning what outfits I will be able to buy and of course my fabulous dates! I just need to find an Aidan I think  That's the worst thing I find about being overweight in NYC--I feel so frumpy because so many people are so thin and fashionable. And here I am, trying to cover up the rolls. It isn't easy to look good once you start feeling bad about yourself--it's hard to shop when you don't want to buy "that size"...I am looking forward to my "attitude overhaul" that should come along with the weight loss and finally getting fit! As for chocolate and desserts, I am with Jenn--I can totally leave it. the only time I eat dessert is if I am traveling for work and everyone convinces me to order so they can try as many desserts as possible. I just want my potatoes and my bread darn it!! :tantrum: Jenn--your story will definitely motivate me to go to that dreaded place that people always talk about...the gym. I know I need to do it which is why I sign up for memberships....but I get so easily discouraged and distracted! I just need to get over my whiny self and suck it up and go there at least 4 times a week. :barf: Oh--here's a question for you...what do I do about this weekend?? I have a friend visiting (actually from the DC area, Jenn!) and she loves to go out to eat in the city and take advantage of all the interesting restaurants. For example, on her list for this weekend is a "Peanut Butter" restaurant and they do all kinds of sandwiches and recipes with the primary ingredient being PB. Now, I may not care about chocolate but I LOVE PB!! It's gonna be tough! The good news is she is motivated to exercise so we will certainly make it to the gym...I just need to figure out what I can do to stay OP. Hope you ladies are having a nice day--rain or shine!! Chat more later! |
Thanks to you Laurie.
Nope, I don't care for Ice Cream, or Cheesecake (or other pies for that matter, although if faced with an apple one I might have a slice) or pasteries. I do like Candy, just not chocolate. But I can deal with not having it. I am a binger by trait and chips were my thing (up to 5 bags, large, 5 serving bags in one sitting!). It's nuts because now, if I do binge, it's on one bag. Makes me sick in one breath but proud in another... I should update my site soon. So much to update in my "story" link! |
Wow Laurie--you are my hero too...
And the more I chat or read on this site, the longer my hero list keeps growing. You have to wonder what it is that makes you just do it right finally? I mean, I can't count how many times I have started with such dedication and fizzled after a couple months or a couple days. I wonder (and I hope) if this will be my last time--is this the right fit for me? Laurie--I asked Jenn this question--Did all of your weight loss come from SB? I know you must be exercising too but wonder where you got your start--you have accomplished so much that other areas of your life must flourishing too! Congrats! Certainly a wedding dress would be a great motivator, huh Jenn? Maybe I should just pretend I am getting married and plan for that perfect dress? Or maybe I should plan for a 3 month vacation to Bali, Australia, NZ and Tahiti in which I am only allowed to wear bikinis, tank tops and skirts? That sounds like more fun and certainly more scary if I don't get the weight off :) |
Jenn, I get you, girl. I another forum we were discussing what a binge consists of...how much food. Most people ideas of a binge were very small compared to what I used to eat in one sitting! :o
Metrochick, I feel you. I used to live in LA, and if you think NYC is full of skinny, fit people, you should see LA! :faint: You know how we always say that the women in ads are airbrushed and fake and no one looks that good? Sometimes it feels like everyone in LA looks like that!!! :( The truth is, what's important is how you feel and who you really are. If you are healthy and happy, you'll look fantastic. :D If you wait to lose the weight to feel good about yourself, you'll find out you're a sad, skinny chick. Revealing your inner self just brings your insecurities to light. A lot of people started noticing me as I lost the weight and I realized that I hid in my fat to stay 'invisible' and to avoid advances from men, which scare me. :( I've had to do a lot of work emotionally as I did work to lose this weight. I bet most people do. Yes, I've lost it all on SBD. I started this WOE 4-28-04, at 328 pounds. I've exercised during most of the plan, and cheated rarely. It's been a revelation for me. :goodvibes: DH and I are dying to start a family, and I need to be at a healthy weight to do that. Almost there... Metro, I know you can do this...I felt the same way when I started--will it really last this time? Over a year later, I can say, YES! :cheer: When you really want to lose it, you'll do it. One of the mods has a signature that says, "If you really want it, you'll find a way, but if you don't, you'll find excuses." AMEN! Love the vacation idea...that's PERFECT! :D When you feel good about who you are...your Aiden will come along. |
newbie
Hi Metro. Tomorrow is my first day on Phase 1. Don't worry, we'll be able to do this. ;)
|
MetroChick - welcome to the beach. You've already gotten lots of great replies. I hope I can add a little more.
Like you, I was inspired by a friend who had lost 65 pounds on SoBe, which had been recommended by her doctor. After I borrowed the book from the library I knew this was my new way of eating for life and bought a copy for me to always have forever. As long as you "make up your mind" this way of eating is easy and becomes a natural way of life. You mentioned you love chips and bread. I don't know if that makes you a salt-tooth, but thats what I am. I have found that a serving of V-8 juice will help with the salt craving anytime, as well as help fill you up before and during mealtimes. Yes, I love sushi too, and you can still have the sashimi which usually satisfies my cravings. The Japanese rest. usually have that spinach salad (sorry but the name escapes me at the moment) which I really like, and is filling and healthy, too. Good job on walking to work. Its heart-healthy, wallet-friendly, and environmentally sound. So what if its raining. How do you think all those people in England get by everyday!!!! Just wanted to add a short, but important NOTE: Many people can lose between 8-13 lbs. (or more depending on where you start from) during their very first time doing two weeks on PH.1 on SoBe, but only if you follow the lists with NO CHEATING. If you "cheat" any during that time you won't see the results you possibly could have. It may leave you tired, cranky, etc. initially, but that will pass. I didn't have any sugar addictions so I escaped all the side effects of PH.1, but I can tell you from experience, and from reading this board, if and when you may try Ph. 1 again later, you probably will (never) not be able to get the same great results from doing PH.1 later on down the road as you DID/could have from doing it right the very first time. I hope you catch my drift, because sticking it out is SO motivational. Good luck, and we look forward to hearing about your progress. By the way, for your info, I lost my first 15 lbs. through counting calories and walking, and the second 15 from SoBe and walking. The SoBe way is much easier, and thats how I plan to get to my past my last 10, and how I plan to live for the rest of my life. Best wishes to you and we hope to see you here on the boards often. |
Hi MetroChick, Greetings from drizzily, overcast and cold NJ! ( This is May??? LOL)
I'm new too! You are soooo right - There are so many role models, support and encouragement from the SoBe forums...Good luck on your journey! |
You gals rock!! And it's because you all are so rational about this whole thing--and not just SB focused. C'mon, how often do you see the words rational, women and diet (change of eating) together??? :dizzy: Nearly impossible.
You are making each second just a tad bit easier!! I am doing okay certainly--no cheats and I get the importance of making it through the first phase without those cheats. I am facing a difficult week few days ahead I have to admit but I am up for the challenge! I already informed a friend who asked me to "celebrate" her GMAT score with her after work tomorrow, that I will be the happy friend with a diet soda instead of a glass of wine or a martini...aaah, a dirty martini would be so good after this crappo day!! Maybe the pooch and I will just take an extra long walk before I clean the apartment! KJSLJACQUES--Good luck!! It certainly isn't bad at all! And if I can make a recommendation--the South Beach Diet Cookbook. I have owned it for over a year--just because the recipes were good. So I broke it out of the shelf this week and last night I made a DELICIOUS :eating2: dinner from one of the PH1 recipes--Eggplant Stuffed with Beef. Awesome!! I am so looking forward to my leftovers tonight! The other thing that makes life easy (and yummy) are the butterball italian chicken breast strips and roasted turkey strips. As much as salad usually brings me down when I make it, my lunch salad today was great! A broad Abroad--thanks for the tips too! I do have the "salt-tooth" which is why me and the smoked almonds or peanuts for snacks are doing just fine :smug: But I am going to give the V8 a shot and head for some sashimi and seaweed salad this weekend for sure--I am already looking forward to it! What part of Germany are you living in? And how hard is it to resist those yummy German beers?? :stars: Are you military or just fortunate enough to work for a company that allows to work abroad? Schatzi--Good luck too!! You are close as well--we may just have to have some healthy tri-state area competition to keep us motivated, huh? I am trying to get ramped up to do more exercise than walking but it is so hard!! And I am a big baby about it! Keep me on my toes--and I will try to do the same for you! Chat later ladies! |
Metrochick,
I live in Wuerzburg, in the upper part of Bavaria. DH works for the Dept. of Defense so we'll be here a little while. Yes, its hard to resist the yummy German beers. Thats how the scale went up in the first place!! I rarely drink them anymore, but I'm in the heart of wine country, so thats my beverage of choice now. Yesterday a friend gave me the SBD cookbook. I'm so excited to make some of the recipes I keep hearing about. |
