SBD prepackaged foods!

While at the grocery store today I came across a display which featured SBD products packaged under the south beach diet name! I picked up a box of meal replacement bars, snack bars, cereal, and a few of the frozen meals. Has anyone else tried them out? I was so excited to see these!

ChinkyDragonfly 03-15-2005 08:12 PM

Very interesting? Did you check the nutrition label? What are the carbs/fat/cals/protein counts?

206bones 03-15-2005 08:17 PM

Carbwell

I had purchased a package of CarbWell peanut butter bars a while back & it had a note on the package that they were changing their name to South Beach.

I don't remember all the specific nutritional info, but I do remember it had 3 g fat & 3 points on the Weight Watchers system.

ChinkyDragonfly 03-15-2005 08:35 PM

Ah, Carbwell. Check the nutrition info. Many times, it is similar (or sometimes even more) calories and carbs than their regular counterparts. Especially the salad dressing.

I guess prepackaged works for me because I don't have such a huge appetite anymore so one meal replacement bar would fill me up. Plus the frozen meals looked much more appetizing than the lean cuisine.

amb_lyn 03-16-2005 12:03 AM

I am anxious to try some of the stuff. I knew it was coming as i've read the emails, etc about all that stuff, but have yet to see any of it. Lemme know what ya think??

Bups 03-16-2005 09:06 AM

I am a bit sceptical of these - I checked out the Chicken Caesar wraps - they have 10 grams of fat - they are 40% fat!!
Be careful how you read the nutritional info - it say 15% but that is of your DAILY intake.

The turkey & bacon wraps are even higher! 12 grams of fat! They are 44% fat!

To me these are high in fat - I would stay away from anything higher then 25% fat.

I also see the word "starch" a lot in the ingredients lists.

And one last comment - they seem really high in sodium as well - 1530mg for the turkey & bacon wrap - that's more then your recommended daily intake.

These convienence foods don't measure up to what I know SBD foods to be.

Sorry but I would pass on these. I can't believe that SBD allowed their name on these.

My 2 cents
Kim

amb_lyn 03-16-2005 09:17 AM

Thanks for the information. I will definitely have to check them out. I stay away from most things that are high in sodium anyway due to my hbp and i swell like you would'nt believe. LOL

Ruthxxx 03-16-2005 09:35 AM

Oh dear! I don't see how those meals can be called SBD. Did Dr. A sell out? I am sticking to my made from scratch healthy foods.
I did try a President's Choice Blue Menu chicken and veggies last week but was not impressed. Convenient? Yes but not that tasty and took 35 minutes to cook in the conventional oven. I did two at once because I wanted to have lunch with Harry.

I've been browsing Kraft's website looking at the ingredients and nutritional information. I don't know that I see any of the products that I would consider acceptable without the South Beach name so I don't know how I can accept them just because they have the name on them. I'm seeing products with real bacon, real pepperoni, lots of additives. The cereals seem like they might be the closest to okay but they are kind of low in fiber and high in sugar.

Take a look at the ingredients on the Whole Grain Crunch cereal:
Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT, ALMONDS, WHEAT BRAN, SUGAR, SOY GRITS, SUNFLOWER OIL, SALT, CORN SYRUP, WHEAT FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, CORN FLOUR, RICE FLOUR, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, FRUCTOSE, OAT FIBER, FRUCTOSE, ARTIFICIAL AND NATURAL FLAVOR, SUCRALOSE (SWEETENER), CARAMEL COLOR, ANNATTO EXTRACT (COLOR), BHT ADDED TO PACKAGING MATERIAL TO PRESERVE PRODUCT FRESHNESS. VITAMIN AND MINERALS: NIACINAMIDE, REDUCED IRON, ZINC OXIDE (SOURCE OF ZINC), VITAMIN B6, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN B12, VITAMIN D.

With 4 grams of fiber and 4 of sugar, I wouldn't eat it.

The toasted wheat with cinnamon cereal is better. Ingredients: WHOLE GRAIN WHEAT, FRUCTOSE, WHEAT BRAN, CINNAMON, NATURAL FLAVOR, SUCRALOSE (SWEETENER), BHT ADDED TO PACKAGING MATERIAL TO PRESERVE PRODUCT FRESHNESS.

But I still see Fructose as the number two ingredient but with 8 grams of fiber and three of sugar it is a definite improvement over the other cereal. I think I will be sticking with my Kashi and Uncle Sam's.

AZLowcarber 03-17-2005 09:41 AM

I'm sticking with fresh, whole foods. I understand the convenience issues for busy Sb'rs but I wish the ingredients lists were healthier.

Ruthxxx 03-17-2005 09:43 AM

Me too, AZ! I can see it for once in a while but.......scary!

Bunnababy 03-17-2005 12:59 PM

I too felt like these are foods that I would resist if they didn't have the SBD emblem on them. I am feeling a little betrayed by Dr. A and his staff. They told us to stay away from certain foods and now they are pushing them. :p I guess they are searching for the :)

beachgal 03-17-2005 04:43 PM

Amen, Bunna! It's almost like Dr. A is saying that you have to sell out in order to eat SBD on the go, which we know isn't true!!!

Why not make cereals with no sugar or with splenda? The wraps don't need that much fat, and why use regular bacon when turkey bacon is available? Very wierd. These are available in my market yet...I'm not sure that's a bad thing!

I love eating the way I do. It'll be nice to have a pizza (if they have them without sugar) for every so often when things get hectic, but I can just as easily keep getting the organic ones I buy now.

beachgal 03-17-2005 05:39 PM

Barb, what's super gross is the chicken pizza topping in the Deluxe Pizza (any meat referred to as a topping is just gross to begin with... :tied: ) sometimes fried in PORK FAT!!! :yikes: :tied: :p How disgusting!!! How can that be part of something called SBD???

beach bum 03-19-2005 10:38 AM

Hi, I'm going to look out for these frozen entrees that the SB is puting out,as our Spermarkets don't have them yet. I use Lean Cuisine alot and it doesn't have any effecton my weight. So when the SB come to our Markets I'm going to give it a try. Hugs :) BB

cottagebythesea 03-20-2005 02:04 PM

I checked out some of the SBD prepackaged foods, too, and was really dissappointed in the ingredients. I was hoping to get some meal replacement bars to keep in the car for emergencies, but no thanks.

sarahyu 03-21-2005 10:33 AM

I saw the lean cousine spa meals at the store recently, it seems like they are healthier then the SBD ones. How sad. I was really looking forward to the convience of not having to cook all the time.
Has any one tried the Kashi snack bars? I saw them at Sam's club. They seem to have too much sugar.
Sarah

kissyjoy 03-21-2005 12:52 PM

Well, SB pre-packaged foods have come to my town! I couldn't resist getting what they call part of this diet (with all those ingredients, I just don't get it)! Anyway, I tried the garlic chicken and green bean frozen entree and I was pretty impressed with it. It's good! The green beans are really good. I also got the cereal (the cinnamon one) and couldn't put that stuff down! I had it for breakfast and then ended up snacking on it later. I really like that too. I also got the cereal bars (the PB ones). They're not something I need to have. They're OK but could tell they had way too many ingredients in them.

I was a little reluctant to try these things because I know when I was on Atkins the pre-packaged foods tasted nasty (way too much soy for me). I think I may stick with certain things from SB and keep most everything else to a minimum (maybe a bar on wedding days?). They've gotta be better than eating wedding cake!

mauvaisroux 03-21-2005 01:50 PM

There seems to be a high carb content in some of the items too (one was 48 g) as well as salt. I am still sticking with fresh is best. I am too used to eating home-made now

Katpo 03-22-2005 01:59 PM

I'm a WW gal, but bought a package of the SBD chicken caesar wraps the other day just to try them out. I brought it to work with me today for lunch, just ate it, so I had to come over and see what you all thought of them -- and now I see!! I totally agree with the opinions I'm reading from you all. While it tasted quite good, I wonder why the high fat and sodium content? I even left the salad dressing off and just ate the wrap, chicken and parmesan. It's very high in fiber, which will hopefully offset some of the fat ? but the sodium??? No way could I eat that like that on a regular basis ... I agree that between these and fresh, fresh is definitely the way to go. PLUS I thought it was a little pricey. It was $3.49 for the package which also included a little cup of SF cherry jello. If anyone's interested, they were (at least at my store) right by the Lunchables.

And that's MY 2 cents' worth!!

HunnyBee 03-23-2005 05:33 PM

Hi gals! Im a regular frozen entree person at work.. Okay, $$ I'm having a hard time Yes, Im little dissappointed w/the fat and sodium.

On the other hand, :p They tasted pretty good better than any other frzn lo carb meal. (btw, Im trying PH1 again!) I tried the PB bars and I liked them even tho Im an anti bar person. I may purchase a box for mountain hiking this summer.
I liked the chicken with marinara sauce the best so far.. pretty good.

wendyjo 03-24-2005 03:06 PM

I've not seen the SB pre packaged foods yet, so I can't comment on them. But for a meal or snack bar or shake the best I've found is the Slim Fast Low Carb. NOT the Optima, but the Low Carb. They taste good and seem to be the healthiest I've found so far. I don't eat them often but sometimes I do have one as a snack or something for "on the go".

saralorine 03-25-2005 06:09 PM

Lunches at work have always been a challenge for me, so when I saw the SBD fro meals, I bought a few. I stuck with the Phase I items... they are tasty, but I am also a little leary of the ingredients.

beachgal 04-06-2005 12:16 PM

Bump for newbies... :D

silas32303 04-07-2005 12:27 AM

I bought some of the new food today too.I found it at Winn Dixie.I tried the turkey and bacon wrap.It was very good and filling.Especially heated.I had a caesar salad with it .I am impressed with the protein and fiber content too.The prices are about the same for other similar products I was buying.
