Is Sugar Free Ice Cream Okay on P2?

  • Hi, Chicks, just a question. I am on Phase Two and have had some Dreyers Vanilla, "No Sugar Added" ice cream. It's sweetened with a combination of sorbitol, Splenda, and acesulfame pottasium, has 100 cal. per 1/2 cup, and only 3 grams of fat. What I'm not sure about is the carbs--14 grams total, but it has 4 grams of fiber (I have no idea where fiber comes from in ice cream!), and 2 of the other carb grams are sugar alcohols, so, so-called "net carbs" would be 8.

I have had it as a dessert, in place of the ricotta cremes, and I'm sure it's a lot fewer calories, though more carbs. Whattaya think?

  • According to the Good Fat, Good CArbs Guide page 84, ice cream is not part of the South Beach diet and should not be eaten except in small amounts as a very occasional treat on Phase II. Sorry!
  • JoJo, I know this is a dissapointment...for me too, since I am used to eating a big bowl of ice cream every night!

However, Dr. A did say in the first book that it is better, if you are going to cheat (not that you were doing that!) to eat full fat ice cream...the real stuff, like Ben & Jerry's...and put some healthy stuff, like fruit or nuts, to help slow down the absorbtion of the sugar. He says the full fat in the this ice cream will slow down absorbtion of sugar and will satisfy you, so you do not eat more every day. I hope that helps!

That said, one person on this forum says she has a DQ sundae every Sunday and is continuing to lose! I could not do that, I believe, but it works for her.
