wine question
 

Hello! I am on week 3 of Phase 1 (yep, wasn't ready to stop yet) and am wondering about wine since I will be heading into Phase 2. We have a Christmas party coming up in a little over a week. I have NO IDEA what kind of red wine is GOOD?? :shrug:
I guess I am a cheap wino cuz when I do drink wine I really like Wild Vines Strawberry Zinfandel, it's about $4 a bottle. :lol:
SO any suggestions on good red wine that won't break the bank, please share!! :cheers:

It depends on what you like I like Luna de Luna it's not that expensive I think around $8.00 US. They have different kinds the Merlot is good (I think it's Merlot) it comes in a pretty purple bottle.

We enjoy Shiraz or Cabernet or Merlot, there are some good mixes of these as well, I think one is called black opal. A good tasting brand that isn't very expensive is Rosemount Estate. Sometimes we find it for around $7/bottle. It is best to let your reds breathe, sometimes it takes an hour or so to get the taste where it should be....sweeter instead of sour. You should be able to find a decent "table" wine for less than $10. That is US prices, I think the taxes in Canada are higher on alcohols. Good luck, Karla

Okay, sorry, I am no conniseur (sp?) by letting the wine breathe do you mean opening the bottle and letting it sit for an hour??

Yes, exactly, open the bottle, and let it sit, you can pour it into a decanter and it will breathe/air more quickly. Walmart even has a wine set right now for about $13, it includes a decanter and 4 glasses. Not exactly precious crystal, but pretty much anything that allows the wine to oxydize (react with the air) will make your red wine drinking pleasure improve. This is only for red wines. All Shiraz is Australian. The same type wine is also called Syrah, but I can't recall whether that is in the U.S. or if that is when it is from France. Rosemount I think is the maker of Black Opal. I'm not certain of that. For the most part, I haven't met a wine I didn't like!!! LOL Of course my first love is Guiness, but I will be restricting myself from it for a while, and then I plan to only rarely indulge in a pint. Karla

It's Australian. A little pricey, but worth it!

Black Opal is an great Shiraz, I love 98 is my favorite year. I know that California Central Coast has excellent full bodied red wines...try Bonny Doon Vineyard or Arciero.... they are probably in the 10-12 dollar range, but worth the extra money.

Arcerio Winery makes a seasonal White Merlot which is some of the best wine I have had, goes excellent with rich fish, like salmon or swordfish.

I love wine...maybe I will go have some to wash down the pizza pigout that I had tonight.....I am about to go into a carb coma and will be waking up to phase 1 tomorrow morning.....

Well, we went to a very 'posh' friends house for dinner and after we polished off their very expensive bottle of red wine, the hostess said how embarrased she was to pull out 'this' bottle of shiraz... we liked it BETTER than the 'posh' one!!!! Don't know the name but it has a kangaroo on the front and she admitted to me she got it for 5.99 at Albertsons!
Now, my daughter goes through the wine aisle in the cart and says... look mommy... your kangaroo wine!!!
