What do you all have planned for Christmas Dinner? It will just be us- DH, the kids, and me. I'm not really sure what to do. I was thinking Cornish Game Hens?? - I just think they are a fun treat. I'm not sure what else to do, or if the hens will be a big PITA. I haven't made them since I was a teenager. I don't really know what sides to do either. The only thing I can think is sweet potatoes, a light green bean casserole, and the gourmet rice blend I make but those are pretty ordinary for us.


So, What are you having???

I'm going to add on to your thread if you don't mind. I have family coming and I have no idea what to serve! We normally have a sugar buffet (fried cookies covered in honey -italian tradition, lasagna and chocolate cake.. etc)

I have no idea what to put out that won't kill me.

I'm lucky - my husband is from the south, and eats a lot of veggies. Our plans:

Turkey, dressing (there's a whole wheat Stove top, even though I don't think it's 100%), gravy for the DH, baked sweet potatoes, fresh green beans, corn for the kiddos, and rolls.

Haven't decided on dessert yet...the kids will be thrilled with ice cream sandwiches and leftover birthday cake!

Christmas Eve is at home with just the immediate family and I decided to do an appetizer spread: shrimp cocktail, scallops, deviled eggs, cheeses, crusty bread, pickled veggies, cocktail wienies (for the kids). I'll throw some more veggies in there. Christmas cookies and hot chocolate for after.

Christmas Day is at my mom's. We are having salmon spread with whole grain crackers and more shrimp for appetizers. The meal is beef tenderloin, greens, mashed potatoes, brussels sprouts, marinated cauliflower, probably some kind of bread. For dessert, everyone brings a platter of their homemade cookies and treats.

I am having friends over for New Year's Eve and I think I'll get some lobster and do surf and turf. New Year's Day, back to Mom's and we always have pork and black-eyed peas for luck.

After all those overly indulgent meals, I'll be dying to get to "normal" eating.

For us:

Appetizers: Spinach & Artichoke dip, Spinach & Feta pies, and a veggie tray with dip

Main dishes: Ham, Turkey, Sweet potatoes, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Turkey Gravy, Homemade cranberry sauce, Green bean casserole, Biscuits, Corn

Desert: Strawberry rhubarb pie, Peppermint Pie, and Apple Cream-Cheese Pie

Needless to say, Christmas is more of an off day, but that's not a carte-blanche for unlimited eating.

Honestly..I have no idea what our plans even are let alone what food we're having.

The only thing I really have control over is what we have when we're at home on Christmas morning. I'm going to be making a quiche (probably lorraine with center cut bacon and swiss cheese) and homemade cinnamon rolls (they are tradition around here).

I believe that we're going to my SIL's house for a late lunch on Christmas day. Since it is just our two families, dinner will probably be pretty laid back which is fine with me!

Oh yeah, I forgot about breakfast. We have a traditional family breakfast of country ham, chicken salad, toast, and ambrosia. Weird, I know, but yummy.
And the kids want homemade waffles with it.

breakfast. sour dough waffles with bacon and sausage and orange juice and of course coffee

dinner - turkey, homemade gravy, shikate mushroom stuffing, brussel sprouts (new recipe from Emerile on Martha Stewart) cranberry sauce, parker house rolls, potatoes cut on a mandoline brushed with olive oil and then baked in the oven (come out like potatoe chips, sort of a ceasar salad and pecan bourbon pie (my son made it)

Then everyone is on their own for a while.

I know it's a motley combo but these are my families favorites. Everyone picked out one or two things each. So, this is what we are having.

Breakfast: My husband always makes dinosaur shaped pancakes w/ maple syrup on them for the kids and berries on them for us -- kind of a tradition.

Dinner: We will have about 15 people here in the afternoon. We are grilling lamb and salmon...yes I said grilling...in two feet of snow. My husband is insane. I am serving grilled mediterranean veggies with goat cheese, some kind of crusty bread w/ olive tapenade, a tossed salad w/ a rasberry-basalmic dressing, polenta w/a fresh tomato and basil sauce...oh, and and I am baking an apple struedel bundt cake with homemade caramel sauce drizzled over it...uh, can we say Off Plan day?

Christmas Eve - assorted hot and cold finger foods, antipasto platter, shrimp cocktail, chicken and eggplant parmigiana, gnocchi, Italian sausage, meatballs, garlic bread, Italian Cream Cake, ice cream, cookies

Christmas Dinner - Baked ham, roast turkey, mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, gravy, broccoli w/cheese sauce, corn, spinach & mandarin orange salad, cranberry sauce, baby Jesus's birthday cake (which will be cheesecake this year), ice cream, cookies

mm! All of that sounds delicious!

I went to the commissary tonight and got things to make:

For breakfast - Cinnabon Cinnamon rolls, a fritatta made with zucchini, cheese, and turkey sausage (I may make this the night before) , orange juice (I never buy juice so it will be a treat for everyone), and clementines.

Later - Cornish game hens, mixed green beans, whole wheat stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, and strawberry cheesecake for dessert - DH's absolute favorite.

I also bought a pork roast to cook tomorrow but I'm not sure what we will be having with it yet. - probably sauteed squash, broccoli, and rice.

You know, I just got a recipe today for a 90 calorie fritatta made with spinach.. a spinach sale begins tomorrow--bunches are .88..I believe I will make it too..thanks for the idea

breakfast will be spinach omelettes with turkey bacon
lunch will be my Jewish Christmas and we're getting chinese (they do a no sauce, steamed chicken and broccoli!) and for dinner tilapia with broccoli I think.
