Thursday's Beach Chat

I'm having coffee from Poland this morning, and it's really good! An au-pair friend of mine lives in Poland, and her mother sent her a huge box of goodies, so she shared some with me. :)

I finally have a day with absolutely nothing planned, but I'm sure that will change, as Cindy probably has a list of errands for me.
We really enjoyed Amber's concert last evening, she plays the violin the orchestra sounded really good! Jake was grateful that it was a short program, though. ;) By the time we got there, it was standing-room only, but we found her other grandparents, so we stood beside them.

Yikes, my coffee mug is empty! Time for a refill. :)

Ruthxxx 12-18-2008 07:07 AM

My mug is full and I'm glugging it quickly so I can crank up the day. It finally stopped snowing and we are supposed to see the snow. That should make for a pretty day. :)

I certainly crossed off a bunch of niggles from my list yesterday so today should be good. I have and 8:40 dental appointment for a cleaning and Donna comes this morning. By this afternoon I'll have a clean house and clean teeth. What more could I possibly want? (See attached. ;)) If the good forecast holds, I may drive my son and DIL's gifts to Kemptville where Wendy's parents live. I won't be seeing Jim and Wendy before Christmas and sure do want Tayler to have her Grandma gifts on The Day!

Right now it's lug the trash time and then a decent breakfast before I fit three months of flossing into 15 minutes.

CyndiM 12-18-2008 07:29 AM

Good morning :coffee2:

Cottage - I hope your relaxing day pans out and you enjoy it. Glad to hear the concert was nice. I still remember elementary school concerts that weren't always easy to sit through ;) DD took violin for a year. That's a really fun instrument for the whole family to survive! Hmmm, Polish coffee - is it dark? I love trying new coffees.

Ruth - Are you getting the big storm tomorrow or are you getting a break? I think it's going to be a long winter. Good luck with that flossing!

I have a pre-planned work at home day today. I thought about going in because I've missed so much office time with the weather lately but decided to stick to my plan (like that was a hard decision ;) I'm going to put applesauce cinnamon bread on while working to bring to the office party this afternoon. I'm thinking about trying the 7 layer dip too. My work mates are really good cooks and we always have lots of good, often decadent food so I need to plan well. I'm thinking the 7 layer dip along with a co-workers veggie chili will provide me with filling, healthy food and help me stay away from the goodies (why don't we call them baddies??!!).

We are gearing up for the Christmas Bird Count Saturday. Of course it will be the coldest day of the week and follow a big snow storm. What fun would there be in spending the day driving all over and hopping in an out of the car if the weather was actually not horrible?! I'm planning to bring the crockpot lentil PB stew for that one. This is as busy as the holiday season gets for us.

What's on your agenda for the day?

Ruthxxx 12-18-2008 07:36 AM

Cyndi, yes, let's call them BADDIES!!!!! Which reminds me, can you post the lentil crunchies you mentioned the other day. Enjoy your day at home.

CyndiM 12-18-2008 07:38 AM

They are here: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147475

I'm still deciding between the 7 layer dip and a tray of these and chickpea crunchies. I figure I've got until after lunch to make a decision :)

cottagebythesea 12-18-2008 07:47 AM

CYNDI, my coffee is dark and strong, but I like a little skim milk in it. :coffee: I haven't made those lentil crunchies in ages! Some of those may just keep me away from the "baddies" that have been calling to me. ;)

RUTH, I'll take Mel Gibson in my stocking any day! :D I hope you have a good time at your SIL's in-laws today.

murphydoodle2 12-18-2008 08:35 AM

:coffee:Good Morning Ladies!

You all seem to be having cozy mornings! I've been out of the coffee habit for a while, but I might have to start it again. My problem is finding things to put in the coffee that don't have 1000 calories. Do you guys use FF half & half or FF evaporated milk? Any preferences? I'm thinking of trying the new flavored Splenda as well.

Ruth- I can see myself flossing right along with you. I'm usually good about flossing right before and right after my cleaning appointments. The rest of the time isn't so good.

Good luck to everyone avoiding BADDIES. As a teacher I am overwhelmed with baked goods this time of year- classroom parties, staff parties, parents sending in baked goods for presents... I did really well and stayed 100% OP Tuesday, but yesterday wasn't as good. I'm hanging on for today and tomorrow and then I'll be able to eat really clean without distractions. You would think I would have figured out by now that when I eat junk I feel like junk.

beachgal 12-18-2008 08:59 AM

Cottage, sounds like a wonderful concert! I'm definitely lusting after your coffee! I bet it's super yummy.

Ruth, I didn't know you had a son and DIL living nearby! Or is it just DIL's parents that are near? How old is your grandbaby? Love your wish for Christmas. :s:

Sounds like you're making great plans for the holidays, Cyndi! I tend to just avoid events with food, but I'm starting to think I need to do more like you are doing. :D I think you're very strong! What's the Bird Count about?

Murphy, I think it's hardest for teachers and nurses this time of year with SOOO many "baddies" (good one, Cyndi!) hanging about. Here's some :dust: for you! I put FF 1/2 n 1/2 or 1% milk in my coffee, depending on how dark it is. The flavored coffee syrups make a big difference (I love DaVinci's B52 or Kahlua), too. But I'm a major tea-freak as well. There are SO many delicious teas out there and many don't even require milk!

Today's bound to be very, very slow here at work. My boss wants to let me go early, but he's afraid that someone might show up after I leave. I have SO much to do at home for tomorrow, so I'm unsure when to go. Guess I'll play it by ear.

Hope you all have a great day and stay warm! :snowglo:

Schmoodle 12-18-2008 08:59 AM

Hey chickies. Yesterday I spent hours sorting and wrapping gifts. I need to run out at lunch today and pick up a few last minute items, but otherwise I'm in pretty good shape. I sent DH out yesterday with the electronics list, but there were a couple of things he couldn't find. Hopefully I will have better luck. Otherwise DS's pile is going to look pretty shrimpy.
DS has his dental appt this afternoon, and DD and I have the Girl Scouts meeting/Christmas party tonight.

My friend that was in the hospital last week with the heart problem is seeing a kidney specialist today as they found a mass in her kidney on the MRI. I will be waiting to hear from her all day. Trying to think of ways I can help - I am going to bake cookies for her and make some dinners for her freezer this weekend, but I can't do what I really want to, which is make this go away. Cookies certainly won't help much. I'm afraid she'll end up spending Christmas in the hospital.

Pacergal29 12-18-2008 09:02 AM

Bring on the coffee, the stronger the better. We are supposed to get ice again early tonight but then warm up overnight. Hopefully it will be gone by morning.

Cottage glad to hear the program was enjoyable (and short). Christmas programs just aren't what they used to be anymore with everyone trying to be PC.

Ruth You can have Mel Gibson I want Kenny Chesney in mine!

Cyndi Dust to you to avoid the "baddies" today!

Murpydoodle shame on us parents for giving such tempting items to teachers!

Me I won't bore you with the details but can you all say a little prayer for some strength for me? I have issues going on at home that I just don't know how to handle and think I have reached a crossroads where I need to make some decisions. UGH why can't life be full of rainbows and kitties! :?:

ETA: Beach hope you get to go home early today.

Schmoodle prayers for your friend.

murphydoodle2 12-18-2008 09:07 AM

Thanks for the motivation beachgal!

Schmoodle: Meals for the freezer are a wonderful gift. I know it would be better if you could make this all go away, but at least with this your friend will know that her family is well fed.

Cyndi: I've been meaning to ask- Does a lifetime bird list mean that you will be planning vacations around places where you can see birds that you haven't seen, or is your list just for your local area?

murphydoodle2 12-18-2008 09:11 AM

Pacer- One of my favorite movie lines is from Horton Hears a Who. "In my world everyone is a pony and we eat rainbows and poop butterflies." On a more serious note, you will be in my prayers. It's unfortunate that we have to go through these situations, but we're stronger in the end!

pam920 12-18-2008 09:30 AM

Good morning.

Cottage, your coffee sounds good. Hope you have a relaxing day.

Ruth, you can have Mel. He used to be my favorite, but I like George Clooney now.

Cyndi, that breads sounds good. Is the recipe listed?

murphy, I used the flavored splenda in my coffee occasionally. I like the hazelnut, but have french vanilla too.

beachgal, hope you get to go home early.

Smoodle, prayers for your friend.

Stephanie, prayers that you find the strength you need. We have rain, rain, rain. Foggy and damp but suppose to get near 60 tomorrow (with more rain).

Me: I've been working on a quilt for my grandson. I won't get it done for Christmas and his birthday is in January. Not sure I'll get it done for that either. It's queen size, split rail, and lots of quilting. I always hand quilt and it takes so much time to complete one, but worth it in the end.

sophie 12-18-2008 09:34 AM

Good morning -

Cottage - Polish coffee, I guess they have a different way of processing it. I know my friend really enjoys her Swedish coffee.

Ruth - Love your attach. and good luck on finding Mel in your stocking. Are you dreaming of Nanaimo Bars.

Cyndi - I know you will be strong and will avoid the BADDIES

Murphydoddles - my children are long out of school but when they were there was a rule put into place no gifts or goodies for teachers.

Laurie - enjoy your slow day.

Schmoodles - prayers for your friend, I remember you saying she has young children. So sad for them.

Stephanie - you are in my thoughts too.

Me - I have made my grocery list and will go shopping today. Hopefully, all I will have to pick up is milk between Christmas and New Year. We are expecting a hugh snowstorm tomorrow and another one on Sunday. Looks like its going to be a long winter.
Sophie

sophie 12-18-2008 09:35 AM

Pam ll- I like George too. Your quilt sounds beautiful. And he will have such a wonderful keepsake.
Sophie

zeffryn 12-18-2008 09:41 AM

Morning, girls. I'm rather worried that I'm not going to make it to the 29th so I'm frantically doing everything that needs to get done. I absolutely HAVE to make the baking/jar mixes for gifts today as we're having some friends over to celebrate Christmas tomorrow night.

I'm trying to think of what to serve tomorrow night - I don't want it to be too involved as I have doctors appointments in the afternoon and won't have time to spend a lot of time cooking. DH suggested pizza - I suggested that we each make our own individual pizzas. I think it sounds kind of fun and the kids will like it. We're going to be decorating cookies as well.

Other than the mixes, just some house maintenance on schedule. Laundry, of course (does it ever end?!). Today is also my day to change bedding. Even though the baby's room is set up, there are still things that I want to put away - toys, blankets, baskets with supplies, etc. so I will try and get that done as well.

Enjoy your day, girls! I'll try and check back later.

jenne1017 12-18-2008 12:01 PM

Bad, bad day SBD wise. I wanted to be so prepared for today and have some things in place b/c today is the office holiday party and I do not want to feel hungry going in there. And I just wasn't prepared food wise.

So I went into work late so I could cook a chicken breast on the stove for lunch. I have some raw veggies and ranch dip (is it ghetto to go into the party, grab a plate, leave and put my veggies and dip on it so I have something to eat in there?), the chicken with frozen broccoli (egads, with it thaw in the fridge and be mush by the time I micro it?) and string cheese.

We're leaving for NYC tonight (just in time for the snow!) but have nothing to make for dinner so I am freaking out about going off the plan. Once we get into NY we have to stop at a store so I can grab eggs and turkey bacon to make at my dad's, as well as snacks. Honey roasted peanuts and hot dogs on the street will not a friendly SBD Ph1 Camper make.

Why did I decide to do this now?!?!?!

Sorry, stressing today. NO time to read and respond until I get internet when I come back on Sunday. Have a good weekend Chickies and PRAY FOR ME

CyndiM 12-18-2008 12:15 PM

Murphy - Being a teacher is tough. It's always baked goods or mugs, unless you work in the sticks and then it's maple syrup (so says my Mom!).
A life list is a list of all the birds you have seen. It can be ever or for specific areas. Yes, we've traveled to get good birds, sometimes on the spur of the moment (though only by car). Awhile back we met people from all over the country who headed to Maine for an African bird that somehow landed there. Luckily birders are some of the nicest people I've ever known and they all go out of their way to help each other see the bird.

Beachgal - I've become a real tea fiend too - caffeinated and de caf. I started because my desk is near a window and my hands are always cold but now I just love drinking tea. Good luck on the early release ;)

Schmoodle - thinking of you and your friend.

Pacer - Kitties aren't all they're cracked up to be either, especially when they want to play at 4 am ;) Sounds like a tough spot to be in.

Pam - the bread is just a variation of my standard whole grain bread recipe. I use applesauce in place of some or all the liquid and add a big tablespoon of cinnamon. Today I also added sunflower seeds and raisins.

Sophie - Have fun getting ready. It does seem like it's going to be a long winter.

Zeff - Good luck with your busy day. Pizzas sound like fun and it goes well with the cookie decorating - decorate your own pizza first, then cookies ;)

Someone asked about the Christmas Bird Count, here's the info: www.audubon.org/Bird/cbc/ It's a lot of fun though it always seems to be cold and snowy!

Okay, off to get ready for the party.

sophie 12-18-2008 01:24 PM

Cyndi - I just have to tell you that a long, long time ago I was in Tobago and that is bird paradise. I remember going to this inn where when the owner rang a bell all these birds came in flying to be fed. I have never seen so many different birds, can't remember them but I do know that they were very rare.
Sophie
most of the shopping done but have to go to a veggie and fruit specialty store.

GONNABE165 12-18-2008 01:31 PM

I finally got a chance to stop in.

Schmoodle my prayers are with you and your friend. Remember you are giving the greatest thing there is and thats your time - your time making those things for her and her family and even though you yourself can't make it go away I know who can so give it to God He will take care of her.

Stephanie  hope all works out

 and prayers to everyone else needing them and a :) to all

miss you guys!!!

Barb0522 12-18-2008 02:30 PM

I am so excited that Brian and I are going to spend Christmas Eve with Kiko and her family. I'm really looking forward to getting a chance to talk to another woman about what is going on in my life. All my friends I talk with on a regular basis are male and they don't always look at life the same way.

I sent Robert an email telling him we had all the electronics unhooked and he could send someone to get them any time before the 27th when I would move them to storage. He sent me a note telling me that I'm not legally allowed to remove his property from "our" house. I've got my lawyer trying to reach his lawyer now. I am not keeping this stuff forever (it's been almost a year since I filed for divorce).

Meals have been on plan but I've been snacking on illegal stuff.

Jenskihere 12-18-2008 03:42 PM

Good afternoon! After reading the posts, I am feeling so bad about the teas, travel mug and homemade goodies I handed out to my kids' teachers today! I made homemade caramel corn and candied nuts this year. It was easy to make in large quanitity and put into cute tins. But from the sounds of it, they probably have a stack of it at home!!
Today was DD's holiday party. She made a super cute ornament with her hand print and picture. Something that will be proudly displayed on the tree for years to come! DS has his party tomorrow.
We are supposed to get hit with a lot of snow and ice tonight. My brother and SIL are supposed to fly out to NY tomorrow for the weekend. It is her 30th bday, and my brother surprised her with this little trip. I hope the weather doesn't cause them any delays, they won't be there too long!
Not a lot on the agenda this weekend besides work. I have started wrapping gifts besides my own kids stuff. I need to work on that this weekend when they are in bed.
My hand is feeling better. Still playing it careful, they were stressing the possibility of infection, so I am trying so hard to watch it.

I am half OP and half off. Doing my best right now. Weight is holding steady, I guess I'll take that for now.

zeffryn 12-18-2008 06:16 PM

Jen - I think the tea and travel mug is a great idea! DH got a gift from one of his students today - imagine his surprise! College kids never give gifts. It was a really cute set of cookies - they were shaped into trains. DH nibbled a little and we gave the rest to DS, he really enjoyed them!

-
ugh! I'm pissed at my landlord! Instead of fixing the damn flooring in the kitchen the RIGHT way, he's just doing a half-as*ed, hackneyed job of it. I wish he would just do something right instead of the cheapest way possible for once.

frick.

*breathe deeply* *breathe deeply*

I have to keep my blood pressure down and this man is not helping the situation any....especially by planning to do this two days before Christmas. What an arsehole.

Jenskihere 12-18-2008 07:10 PM

Thanks Zeff. I found the cutest snowflake travel mugs and my mom got the same tea set as a gift, she raved about it, which gave me the idea. I am hoping they are tea drinkers! I am mostly a coffee gal, but every now and then I'll try tea, especially flavored ones. I also stuck small bags of Lindt (is that how you spell it?) candies in their bags. My cleaning lady gave me a HUGE bag last week, and it was getting me into trouble. So I had to give it away. Broke my heart, but these are the situations that got me into the trouble I am in now. Need to change habits! :carrot: Dancing carrot for me for giving away some awesome chocolate! :D
Those train cookies sound so cute! My DS would love that. He is a train nut. And my little nephews are turning into train nuts too!

Zeff - that is too bad about your landlord. Fixing it right the first time would be the best idea! Good idea to try to remain calm. I can't believe how close you are to your delivery! How exciting!!

I wanted to comment on TBL winner too. I was so happy that Michelle won! And seriously, no one could tell Heba she needed a better bra!! DH said the same thing as soon as she walked out! How embarassing!!

CyndiM 12-18-2008 07:21 PM

I always appreciated good homemade treats Jen. I don't think most people worry and watch the way we do so I'm sure she either enjoyed the treats or had someone nearby more than happy to take care of the yummies for her :)

I survived the annual office party! My food was mostly on-plan though I had half a spinach square that I'm sure had cream in it. I also nibbled on one homemade orange almond cookie and the tiniest corner of a slice of homemade cranberry bread (I no longer waste calories on mixes or store bought stuff). But no chocolate anything, no apple cheddar muffins, no candy of any kind, no eggnog, no full fat cheese including brie... So all in all I did well and I don't feel totally deprived. Now to go work it off on the treadmill :)

Jenskihere 12-18-2008 07:30 PM

CindyM - WAY TO GO! You make it sound so easy!! Sounds like you sailed thru a lot of temptations. I hope I have half your strength at my next holiday gathering!!

CyndiM 12-18-2008 07:59 PM

If I hadn't come home where there are not temptations like that I would be seriously tempted to eat more sweets. I've got some cravings now but a workout should get rid of them. I can nibble on a small cookie on rare occasions but it makes it harder to be around sweets for a few hours. That's one reason I save my treats for really good, home baked stuff :) (and of course, the calories!)

Jenskihere 12-18-2008 08:17 PM

It is amazing how much more in tune with my body I am now that I started SB. I thought of myself as weak before, not being able to resist my cravings. DH didn't get it, said the cravings were "all in my head" (he meant that in the nicest way of course!). But he didn't get it. And now I am learning what my triggers are, and if I do have a craving, the best thing is to resist because they will go away!!

cottagebythesea 12-18-2008 08:28 PM

CYNDI, I'm impressed! :bravo:

I'm glad your hand is feeling better, JENSKI. Take care that it doesn't get infected now. I think your teacher gifts will be much appreciated, too, so don't worry.

BARB and KIKO, I'm so glad that you two are spending Christmas Eve together! It's great that you've finally managed to meet each other, after living so close. If I ever get to Grand Prairie, where my BIL lives, we'll have to arrange a get-together so I can meet you both. I've known you both for so long, I'd love to meet IRL!

ZEFF, I hope that landlord of yours gets everything taken care of before Christmas, but try not to get too stressed about it. It's not good for you OR the baby.

JENNE, have a safe trip to NYC, and good luck staying OP!

SOPHIE, I hope you got all your shopping done today before the snowstorms hit. We're have three storms heading our way, with the first one due tomorrow. I really think we're in for a rough winter this year.

STEPH, and prayers for you.

SCHMOODLE, I hope the best for your friend, and you are such an angel to see that her family is prepared for the holiday!

PAM, another I'd love to get in my stocking is Kurt Russell. ;) Oh, yeah! :)

MURPHY and GONNA, hope you both had a good day!

Jenskihere 12-18-2008 08:58 PM

I added a new recipe to the Phase 2 crockpot board.
Blueberry french toast. Sounded good to me!
http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158950

murphydoodle2 12-18-2008 09:09 PM

Jenski- Please don't feel bad for sending in treats. It really is nice to know that you are appreciated. I'm just personally in a place where I have trouble resisting baddies and they are everywhere! Plus sugar makes me grumpy. The teachers I know that don't eat the treats (and they are actually very few) give them to their children at home or put them in the faculty lounge.
