Weekend Chick Chat
:coffee: Good morning Chickies!
I'm enjoying my wake-up cup of coffee before we head out for our usual Saturday morning running around. My granddaughter is coming over this afternoon to help bake cookies, and I want to make sure I have all the supplies on hand. I normally bake about 14 different kinds of cookies and several kinds of candies and sweet breads for holiday trays I give out, but I'm really cutting back this year. Yesterday, Maggie and I had a delightful time at the mall, where I finished my shopping. :D There was an orchestra from a local school putting on a concert, so we stopped to enjoy that for while, and Maggie was excited to see Santa Claus, but she would only wave at him, she didn't want to talk to him. :) I found fantastic sales, it seems the closer it gets to Christmas, the better the sales! Tomorrow will be spent wrapping. Then we'll be all set. :) |
Weekend Chat - December 13 and 14
Darn cold out there this morning at -8ºF or so the dogs tell me. They rushed in really fast and probably wanted hot kibble :) Did anyone see the moon last night? It was a biggie and really lit up the yard. My old pine tree is ice-covered and looked gorgeous! I still haven't resolved the tree stand problem and may just not bother with it. It'd only be up for a week anyhow as I leave for my trip on the 22nd and will be gone until the 30th which would be nearly time to take it down. I do have other Christmassy stuff around so won't be a complete Grinch. I'm hoping to get the outside garlands up tomorrow when the temp is supposed to go into the forties! Crazy weather! A neighbour is having a party tonight and I'm planning to go. It's walking distance which is good as I refuse to drive at night this time of the year. There are too many folks out there who don't understand the designated driver concept! The sun has decided to get up and the southeast is lemony yellow. Time to start the day, Chickies! EVERYBODY UP! |
Cottage, you beat me to it while I was messing around with tags! I just may start my own Christmas goodies this afternoon and will think of you and your GD when I do it. Enjoy the day!
|
Good Morning Cottage and Ruth! Baking sounds fun, but I'll be too busy today. I need to run the car through the wash and vacuum it, get the dogs for a nice long walk as they really haven't had much of one all week, clean house then pamper myself in a nice warm salt bath before the party tonight. Last night we had a Pedicure party. I didn't do my toes, but I did do a manicure. I had them put on a set and I keep banging them on everything and boy, they sure do hurt! I had these a few years ago and once I got used to them they weren't so bad. But after the party I went to the mall for a necklace and earrings to wear with the dress and had more compliments on my nails than ever! I am not used to pampering myself like this and feel weird!
I may be able to wear this dress to the passover sedar this coming year, if I find the right shawl to put over it! I sure hope I didn't gain any since trying the dress on, as it was snug when I first tried it on., we'll see today. anyway... I hope to check in today to do daily's before the party. |
Good morning Chicks :coffee2: Let me say yet again how much I like electricity (and internet!). Yesterday was a very long day and it's good to be back to normal around here. I was actually excited to do my dishes last night!
Cottage - I do miss all the baking some days. You may have motivated me to work on an acceptable, healthy gingerbread recipe :) I think having grandchildren will get me back to it a little and by then I should be better at resisting my creations. Have a wonderful day. Ruth - :brr: I always feel like a wimp complaining about the cold here when I read your posts. I have to admit that two years ago when DD stopped coming here for Christmas (we meet at my parents house) I stopped decorating. We have a tiny little 4 rm apartment and it was a lot of work that just didn't seem worth it. Now I do outside stuff for they birds instead and the clean it up :) I was noticing the same thing about the temps. I find it extra hard to get used to the cold when it bounces around but I do love the days I can get outside to walk. Enjoy the party tonight :) I'm in weekend chore mode as usual - a little cleaning, a little laundry, a little baking and some exercising. Maybe I'll get into my present stash and figure out where I am and start wrapping. I've been listening to the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol and burning balsam candles :) ETA - Good morning Lori :) |
Good morning Chickies,
Cottage- I am going to try to bake some goodies this afternoon for the neighbors as well DD2 will be helping she loves to help. Ruth- I did not put up much this year only tree and stockings in the house as we are leaving on the 19th and will not be back until the 29th. but we did put up regular stuff outside and candles(battery operated w/timer) in all the windows as usual. Lori- Sounds like you are all ready for the party tonight- have fun and enjoy pampering yourself this morning Cyndi- I was like you last Friday forgot how much I use the internet to connect to the world now, glad youare back up. As for me got up early because someone was coming to look at blazer still haven't sold it- DH said we would just use it as a trade in June when I am getting a newer vehicle (DD1 will be driving and she gets the one I am driving now) if it doesn't sale so I guess I am not too worried about. Today I am going to go shopping to get one last present for gift exchange for work- getting stuff to make goodies and then just cleaning around the house and getting ready to leave next Friday. Have a great day everyone. |
Ruth - Brian and I saw that moon on the way home from picking him up from afterschool care. We had to drag the big telescope out and take a look. It was almost too bright to look at. Magnificent!
cottage - Have fun. I don't think we're going to do any Christmas cookie baking. Neither of us need the calories and Brian is old enough not to care. Lori - Have a great time with the party. Cyndi - Glad you got your power back. Sounds like a busy weekend planned. Pearl - Gift exchanges can be fun. None for me this year. If the day turns out to be as warm this afternoon as they predict (before the next cold front comes in), I've promised Brian we'll go to Six Flags Holiday in the Park. He loves the rollercoasters and this is probably the last chance we have to go before the season passes run out. We've got a bunch of errands to do first though so I better get moving. |
so why are we all whining about the weather. I just checked Calgary, Alta where my daughter lives and right now the temperature is -27.4F. now that is cold.
Cottage - sounds like a perfect afternoon baking with granddaughter. Ruth and Loriann - have fun at your parties. Cyndi - glad you are back with the power. I guess drying all your veggies is better than keeping them in the freezer. Pearlrose - have fun being busy with Christmas stuff. Barb - Rollercoasters are my nightmare. Have fun. Me - will pick up some pecans for baking sandies and have to finish a project for a friend. Pork chops in the crockpot are a cooking. Everyone drive safely in this mad weekend. Sophie |
Morning, girls,
We slept later than we've slept in a long time this morning. Almost 10! In fact, DH overslept his tee time. DS wasn't the natural alarm clock that he usually is. Off to get some laundry switched around and then we're going to take DS to see Santa at the mall....it's going to be packed. I think we'll also bring him to Barnes and Noble to play with the trains since he's been good this week and we haven't been in awhile. Also have to deliver some stuff that I gave away on Freecycle - it was a man and I didn't want him coming to the house. Paranoid? maybe. Stay warm, girls!! |
Good afternoon, everyone!
Cottage: Congrats on finding great sales yesterday! We did our shopping so early this year that nothing was really on sale. Oh well. Enjoy your baking day! Ruth: Goodness, that's cold! The moon was gorgeous last night! DH and I took some time to stand outside and gaze at it. Then he reminded me that halftime was almost over and the Spurs game wasn't going to wait for us. Lovely. Enjoy your baking day! Keep those furbabies (and yourself) warm! Lori: I'm glad you pampered yourself! We all need it from time to time. I need to take that advice. Enjoy your walk with the doggies and I hope you have a blast at your party! Cyndi: I need to be as motivated as you today! I just feel like sitting in front of the computer all day, but I really need to get stuff done. Maybe Christmas music and candles would help? Enjoy your electricity! It is such a blessing when you really think about it! Pearl: Good luck braving the shopping crowds! I hope your blazer sells, but at least ya'll have a back-up plan. That's got to be a relief! Barb: I hope you and Brian make it out to Six Flags! I remember going to Six Flags in San Antonio over the holidays and it was always lovely. IMO, it's the best time to go; not as crowded and SO festive! Enjoy! Sophie: Wow, your DD definitely has us all beat! Hope you're having a lovely Saturday! Zeffryn: Glad to read that your OB appt. went well yesterday. Every time I read about ya'll going to B&N to play with the trains and check out the books, it warms my heart! :) I don't think it's paranoid at all to deliver the Freecycle stuff. I have DH go with me on first-time Avon deliveries even if it's a woman that ordered. Enjoy your day! Me: Things are going well here. We slept in until 9:30 this morning, so it was a lazy start to the day for us. We've run all our errands and now I just have some laundry, a bit of cleaning and packing to do. I'm feeling pretty good about leaving tomorrow, so that's a big relief. I really need this course by the end of the year, so it has to be done. Better to do it with a good attitude than be bitter about it, right? I'm feeling more like myself every day; I'm even blogging again! That was a HUGE relief to my mom. She got really concerned by my lack of blogging. I find that hilarious! Well, off to get stuff done. I probably won't stop in until late tomorrow or Monday evening, so I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! ~Kim |
Hi Kim - glad to hear you're feeling better :)
Sophie - I wasn't as worried about the fridge food as the whole house was reaching fridge temps ;) Pearl - We get so cranky when our internet is down. We even bring laptops camping now because lots of campgrounds have wireless. I'm not always sure that's a good thing but I love being in touch. I really rely on my check-ins here these days too. Zeff & Barb I got the morning shopping done and found some great bargains so I'm glad I dragged myself out. I picked up collards for $.25 a bunch. I guess no one knew what to do with them. Between that and 100% cranberry juice for $1.69 I almost feel like I won the lottery. Speaking of - found some stevia/erythritol blend sweetener. has anyone tried it? I've got chili on, applesauce ready to process, and groceries all put away. Now I'm going to enjoy a cup of Sugar Cookie tea (smells a lot like sugar cookies!). It is lovely out. Ice is really tough to deal with but it does make everything look magical once the sun hits. |
Hey Everyone,
Its been a long long time since I have posted here. But I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I lost my brother and my father back in April, Dad to cancer and brother to suicide both on the same day- fortunately for me instead of going down a horrible spiral I became pregnant a month later. I am expecting a baby girl at the end of February :) And I also wanted to let you know that I have modified the SB diet a bit *more on phase 3 and I have only gained roughly 20 pounds. I am still working out everyday but would also love the support of this forum. So I am back- <3 -C |
Angelshine welcome back, sorry to hear about the deaths in your family but nice to hear you have a blessing coming in February.
Cyndi, your picture reminded me of last ice storm we had last year trees were just beautiful. We are expecting ice storm to come through tomorrow night into monday so we shall see. I got my gift for exchange- it was straight into JCPenny's at the mall and straight back out and then to the grocery store around the corner. I was back home in 2 hours which is a record for me considering it takes 20 minutes to get there. We have the cookies baking and have Christmas music on so we are set. Have a good evening. |
Hi chicks,
Here it is 6:23 and I have no idea what's for dinner. I mentioned to the family that I might not be in the mood to cook, but so far nobody else seems to be motivated to take initiative. Well, there's always scrambled eggs in a pinch. I've had motivation problems all day. Maybe because I need to get to the creamery and can't drink my coffee without milk. I woke up before 6AM and fired up the laptop in bed thinking I'd surf for a while then hit the grocery store early. Next thing I knew I was waking up again and it was 10AM. Good thing DH noticed and moved the laptop to safety. I did get to the grocery store but can't get motivated for any big projects and there's so much to do! I guess we'll get the tree tomorrow, and I thought about pulling out presents to wrap, but... nah. I might mix up some cookie batters. You chicks that have your baking days early like this, how do you keep the cookies from going stale before Christmas? I usually wait until the weekend before. I have to come up with a Christmas craft for DD's Girl Scout party on Thursday, maybe I'll make that my project for the evening. That and planning menus for the week. And maybe a glass of wine (or two). Wish I had a good movie to watch. Unfortunately there are lots of kids around tonight (ours and extras) because what I am really in the mood for is some more grownup time. Whatever you do, have a nice evening chicks! |
Schmoodle, by Christmas all the cookies are gone, so I don't have to worry about them going stale. ;) We made 7 different kinds today, and they'd be gone by tonight if I didn't yell at everyone to stay out of them.
Tomorrow I have to make biscotti and pizzelles. Every year I declare this is the last time I'm doing all this baking, and this year I mean it. |
Hey girls,
Actually finding a few quiet moments to check in. Ruth Hope that you have fun at the party. :hat: Barb Did you and Brian make it to Six Flags? The weather was weird today, wasn't it?? Cottage I am hoping to bake some with the girls during break. My food resolve hasn't been what I need to be the last few days, so having it in the house right now would NOT be good! Schmoodle :hug: Just sounded like you needed that! What do you all windup eating for dinner?? Kim I am so happy to hear that you are feeling better. :grouphug: Cyndi How was the Sugar Cookie tea? Sounds yummy! Zeff Sleeping in like that sounds divine! I can't get my kids to sleep much past 8:00 on a good day. I am hoping to get them good and rested over the winter break. They are pretty run down and beat. Exercise has been great this week, but I had a RIDICULOUS day of eating yesterday. It was horrible..... I have been back on track today, but good golly. Send up a prayer for Rob (my DH)if you don't mind. He has been crazy busy at work and is absolutely exhausted. He is also missing his dad tremendously. All in all I think he is dealing with all the stress okay, but just love him and worry about him. |
:coffee: Morning Chicks
Schmoodle - I had the same motivation issue yesterday afternoon and evening. Good thing I'd set the crock pot up in the morning :) I ended up in a nice hot tub with patchouli sweet orange foamy bath salts  Hope your evening was as pleasant and relaxing. Kiko - Thinking of your DH and you. Will things slow down for him soon or is this a no end in sight sort of thing? The Sugar Cookie smells amazing but is a little boring. I'm going to try it with 2 bags and a long steep today. I love the Sugar Plum Fairy and DP love the Nutcracker but so far the others have been a bit disappointing. Gotta love Celestial Seasonings though for trying :) Cottage - I used to start baking Thanksgiving weekend with freezables and bake right up until Christmas. There was lots of frosting and decorating at the end too. Then we would go to the families with a huge box of about 25 cookies and a dozen candies and make everyone plates. It was fun when DD was young but eventually I got new hobbies and did less each year. Now, of course, I don't bake at all. We definitely don't want it in the house and most of my friends really don't want anymore either, even if they like them. I've just focused my cooking obsession on other foods ;) Angel  Since my motivation fizzled yesterday I have the rest of the chore list to work on. It's supposed to go up into the 30s so I'm also hoping for an outside walk! The temperatures are enough to make anyone crazy this year but I love the opportunity for non-freezing walks. What's on your weekend agenda? |
:coffee: Good morning. I up all by myself this morning. Jake is still asleep, which is really unusual for him, he's usually up around 4 every morning. I hope he's not getting sick!
Yesterday was exhausting, I tried to do too much in too little time. But I was on a roll and wanted to get as much baking done as I could. I ended up very tired and very grumpy. :D I took my tea and my PB Cup Dessert upstairs to the bedroom and laid in bed watching a Christmas movie. It did improve my disposition, though. ;) Today I plan to finish up baking, I have two more kinds of cookies to bake, plus biscotti and pizzelles to make. Just remind me next year that I said I'm not going to do this anymore. :) We also want to get the rest of the gifts wrapped and under the tree. Jake is a big help with that, but he's Mr. Perfection, whereas my method is "wrap & slap". |
Good Morning!
I would love to join your chats! I posted my bio in the introduction section, but for a short intro, I'm 39, just transitioned to SB, and hoping DH will jump on the wagon with me. CyndiM- I love the sugar cookie tea, but I figured out that I had to use 2 tea bags and 2 Splenda (which is way more than usual for me). Unfortunately, my Walmart seems to be sold out for the year already. Cottage- I admire your willpower for being able to bake all those cookies and not eat them. I don't think I'm there yet. I have to take cookies to church tonight, which worried me until I realized that I could take the PB & J cookies from SB Supercharged. I'm scared that if I made regular cookies I would have a bite of the dough and then another... Have a great day everyone! |
Good (early) morning, everyone!!
Cyndi: I must have taken your motivation from you because I got a lot more done than I thought possible! I can't believe the bargains you got on your shopping trip...wish you could pass them down to me! Enjoy your "warm" walk today! Angel:  I'm sorry for your losses this year, but overjoyed at your blessings. Pearl: Now that's quick shopping! Enjoy your Sunday! Schmoodle:  It sounds to me that you just needed to take a day for yourself. I hope you had a relaxing evening and that you're feeling more motivated today. If not, just find a good movie and a bottle of wine and take it easy!! Kiko: Thanks. It feels great to be back. and prayers for you and Rob. Cottage:  "Wrap and slap"! That describes my DH perfectly! I'm the perfectionist. Hope you get the rest of the baking out of the way quickly so that you have the rest of the day to relax. murphydoodle: Nice to "meet" you and welcome to the chat! I don't have near the willpower of these ladies when it comes to cookies, but I am getting better. It does take time, discipline and commitment to be able to pull it off! Enjoy your Sunday! Me: Not much going on here. I crashed out early last night so I was up at 5:00 this morning. :yikes: Even for a day when I'm going out of town, that's early! It's nice to have time to gather my thoughts before taking off, though! I was able to get an extra load of laundry folded and put away; I assumed they would be waiting for me when I get back on Thursday. DH is taken care of food-wise. We had taco bake for dinner last night, so there's those leftovers, and I'm going to throw Tortilla Soup into the crockpot as soon as I'm done posting. Well, I'd best be off... Hope everyone to come has a great Sunday and I might "see" all of you again tonight! ~Kim |
Good Morning everyone.
Kim, I hope you have a safe and fun trip! :welcome: Murphy! how's the SB going for you? Cottage, wrap and slap? When you wrap a gift how its wrapped says as much as the gift! ;) We are going to hold you to the no baking next year! Cyndi, a walk is also on my agenda! These dogs are going to disown me if i keep it up, no walk this week which is unlike me! (Kiko) Sorry dh is having a hard time! Schmoodle, here's motivation dust! Hi Angel and Welcome back. Sorry to hear of your father and brother, difficult times that time and a new baby help with! Congratulations with the baby. We have a few expecting here! Me. Well I went to the party and had a blast! But then I woke up with a TERRIBLE headache! I only had three white russians last night! I know, I know, not sb approved. But I was also having my yearly birthday drink. OK, so it's a week early, but hey! Anyway, the people were super nice as always. The DJ made a speech at the beginning of the meal saying he's been all over the country and his home base is rochester, he's been djing the Xmas party for the company for over thirty years and said of all the people he's met this group are the nicest, tried and true! That I would have to agree with, so far. Then the owners asked him to bless the food. What was nice is that they told drivers not to drink, but if they did the company would pay for taxi. |
Fly-by post! The morning is getting away from me.
Church was great this morning. Karen our super minister is finally feeling better although tired. She had stomach problems followed by the flu and has been off on sick leave for six weeks! I'm off to a Christmas luncheon today and am all tiddled up in another Christmas sweater. I try to wear one of my collection every day. even if it's an "at home" day. I gave up on the tree yesterday and put it away - maybe I'll find the missing leg for the stand after New Years. Still no luck on a ploughing guy. I've left three messages at one place with no response and just found out that the guy's FIL died so it's time to move on. I'm sure he won't want to discuss it at the visitation tomorrow! Have a super Sunday and save some positive energy for yourself. |
Thank you all so much for the warm welcome back :) I am off to work I will catch up with people later. Hope everyone has a fabulous rest of their weekend!
|
Hi chicks, I am having another drag-butt morning, but feeling better. Thanks for the warm thoughts and hugs. You were right, I needed that! So nice that we are all here to pull each other up when we take our turns being down in the dumps. I think I was just feeling overwhelmed with the week ahead and all that I need to get done. I've got meetings in DC and Quantico three days next week,so I'll be on the road a lot. Anyway, I had some wine, and we foraged for dinner. The kids ended up with hot dogs and I had some leftover spaghetti squash. DH made a cheese and saucisson plate with some stuff I picked up for him at Trader Joe's and he was happy as a clam. It is so gross, he leaves the Camembert out for a couple of days until it gets really smelly and starts looking funny. Then he eats a raw onion with it, like it was an apple. Whenever he does that (not too often, thank goodness), he turns into a smelly Frenchman and I have to tell him there will be no affection from me for a couple of days until it wears off.
Anyway, we watched The Christmas Story and I drank some wine and went to bed and I am feeling more festive today. We are going to get the tree in a bit, which should also help. Of course, if I'm going to be totally honest, my malaise could have something to do with the crappy way I've been eating lately. I have gained 4 lbs in the last 2 months, ugh! Which is why I'm going to put off the baking until the last minute. I am just not in the right frame of mind to be around all that stuff now. I used to make tons of different cookies too, something my mom always did, and still does. And my SIL. So on Christmas Day we end up with a ridiculous selection of baked goods. We've gotten better about coordinating who bakes what so we are not repeating each other. I've pared back a lot. Now I let everyone in the family pick their one favorite, and that's what I make. With five people, we still end up with a lot of cookies. I don't give any as gifts because everyone I know bakes their own anyway. I got a nice surprise yesterday, as I was pulling Christmas stuff out of the attic. I'd forgotten that after Christmas last year, I went crazy buying tons of those sturdy re-usable decorated Christmas gift boxes on clearance. That will make wrapping a lot faster this year!. Kiko, I hope things settle down for Rob. As a chef, this must be a busy and stressful time of year for him. Thanks for the hug! Welcome back angelshine! Ruth, my DD1 is attending an ugly Christmas sweater party this year. Apparently this is a popular thing with her age group. They have to find the ugliest holiday sweater they can, and wear it to the party. She asked if she could check my closet! Should I be offended? I love holiday wear, although I've always thought I stayed away from the tackier stuff. Apparently not. She did find something she is considering to wear. Kim, is it another work trip? You sure have had a lot of those lately! How was Santa zeff? This is the first year none of mine have cared to see him. What a relief! Hi pearlrose, murphiedoodle, and sophie! Hope your weekend is going well. Cyndi, I'll have to look for that tea. Last year I tried the Egg Noggin and I didn't like it much. I like the gingerbread though and the sugar cookie sounds yummy. A hot soak is a good idea. Maybe tonight I'll do the same. Okay, everyone is waiting for me to get ready to go get the tree, so I'd better get moving. After that I need to do some cleaning, and DS has tons of makeup work left from when he was absent last week. I've got to get my food plan together for the week and make sure I've got grab and go stuff for my running days. |
Schmoodles, you made me laugh about your husband and the cheese he likes. Mine is the same the smellier the better and help me if he finds unpasturised cheese. I won't tell him about leaving out the camembert for a couple of days. He isn't french but came to Canada at the age of 10 from France. Lived a stones throw from Fontaine Bleu. And yes wine is always here on the weekend except with his surgery, doc told him not this weekend.
I bake and freeze my cookies but when my kids were teenagers once Chris. I discovered that only 1/4 of the cookies where left in the freezer. They were all sneeking down and eating them but of course I got the standard answer, it wasn't me. Cottage - I too made pizzells and it takes much longer than ordinary cookies because you stand there and make only two at a time. Everyone else have a good day, follows Ruth suggestion and sit down for 20 minutes and rest. Sophie |
Schmoo - Santa was fine. DS was actually scared of him at first which is not in character for him at all. He eventually warmed up and sat on his lap. The pics were great and the line wasn't really that long.
- Baking and cleaning on the roster for today. I have at least three kinds to bake plus another to make and chill the dough for baking tomorrow. I'm thinking of making caramel corn as well. Already I've put in two loads of laundry and folded/put away two loads of baby clothes (I hate having to wash everything in special detergent again!) The baby room is finally coming together now that it isn't being used as a storage room. It's crazy to see the crib and everything set up again! |
Six Flags was a lot of fun yesterday. The lines were a LOT longer than I expected (about an hour) but we rode on 4 roller coaster and went to a really good short musical show. We even got some shopping in. They had a hill of snow (manmade since it was 64 degrees) that you could sled down but the line was an hour for it so Brian wasn't interested. It was well worth it since we had season passes but not if we had to pay. Too many rides were closed for yearly maintenance.
Eating at the park was horrible. They really don't have much of anything healthy although I found out later there is a place with soup that would have been better than what I got for dinner. Today has to be better. I'm up two pounds from yesterday but I'm hoping some of it is water. At least we did a LOT of walking. I'm taking Brian to visit Robert in a half hour. I'll go grocery shop while he's there. I still need to do some garage cleanup and I want to do that today before we get cold again. Kiko - This weather is far stranger than usual. I don't know whether to put on a tshirt or a coat! I can't believe it is in the 70's today and then will be so cold tomorrow. I hope things ease up for Rob soon. This is a busy time of year for many people. PM me when you get some time and we can try to get together again. Maybe when the kids are out of school. I've got lots of vacation days I'm taking (although I really need to get some stuff done around the house like brick repair and maybe moving Robert's stuff to a warehouse). |
Hi all.
I did a-ok today -- not as much water as I should have but working on that now. I also skipped a snack and dessert. Not on purpose but it's late already! went food shopping too. I am sooo excited! Hope you all had a fabulous weekend! |
