Thursday's Thoughts on the Beach

Where's Ruth? :D

Another stupendous day is shaping up, at least for the morning. We may get some sprinkles this afternoon. I'm really enjoying this gorgeous weather, though, and all the splendor of Fall's beauty. :)

I have to go over to Cindy's early this morning. Her MIL is coming over for me to wash and trim her hair, she's not able to do it since she just had shoulder surgery. Maggie's class is going on a field trip to a local orchard, so she's going to come home with more apples that we'll make into a pie this afternoon. I've been doing pretty well staying OP this week, hope I can keep it up! :crossed:

Coffee? :cofdate:

Thursday Thunder

It's raining here. Good for the plants. Not so good for being able to mow the lawn-that-hasn't-been-mowed-in-two-weeks! Ah well. Maybe it'll stop by the weekend.

Hi, by the way!

I'm going to try to get back to the board more often. It's been hard to find the time but I need to make it a priority. My pants-o-meter is blaring and I must get back on track.

This week I am focusing on getting all of my water in. So far, so good. I hadn't planned to incorporate food choices into this week's goals, but I happen to be making better picks in that department as well, so I'm not going to stop! Next week's goal is going to be upping the veggie servings. I think I'm running at a measly cup and a half or two cups max. Shameful, I know.

This is for Avery, who is looking over my shoulder:
:carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot:

Hey, look where we went last week:

LOL

It took me so long to figure out another "TH" word that I simulposted, Linda! Morning!!!

Kara

cottagebythesea 10-16-2008 06:10 AM

Nice to see you, Kara! Yes, rainy days and Germany always seem to go together. ;) You all look healthy and happy, Germany must be agreeing with you! Is that the colosseum in Rome?

tomandkara 10-16-2008 06:15 AM

Thanks for merging the threads.

Yes, we went to Rome! Connor had two weeks off from school so we decided to take a trip, and the tickets to Rome were only 29 Euro each way! It was a really fun trip, especially since Connor studied the Roman Empire for about 2/3 of his history curriculum in homeschool last year. He had fun seeing all of the sights. The girls did, too, of course. And the lots of walking didn't hurt (although the gelato certainly did...).

Nice to be back.

Kara

Ruthxxx 10-16-2008 06:25 AM

Oh no! Cottage and Kara beat me! :( I was "elsewhere" griping about having to go to Synod for three days.

Kara, you look great and so do the kids. I won't mention that male hunk with you but oh my! I'm all atwitter.

Cottage, yet more apples? Orchard trips are fun and apple pie is yummy. Congrats on staying on track this week - I hope you blazed the trail for me as I am lagging far behind.

Lots to do this morning before leaving for Synod in Kingston for three days. I do hate having to be indoors in glorious weather but will try to be an adult and not gripe when I'm there. I have to present a paper tomorrow afternoon and will check for revisions this morning. No, I'm not nervous - yet! I've always had stage fright but know it disappears the minute I open my mouth. Wee Disney is going to the kennel which will not delight her but she needs to get used to it.

This isn't getting stuff done so I'm outta here. Hope your day is great. I may be able to check in from Kingston so everyone stay out of trouble.

tomandkara 10-16-2008 06:33 AM

Ruth, sorry, he's mine! He did get asked out on a date yesterday, though! One of the gate guards knew his name from checking his ID and e-mailed him (military addresses are firstname.lastname so they're easy to figure out). He got a huge head about the whole thing and strutted around all night. This is what I had to hear: "What do I do if she asks me out again? It's not like I can turn *this* (waving at his face) off!" He was joking so it was really funny, but I did make him go get his wedding ring and put it on. He's grossly negligent about wearing it and I wish he would get in the habit. For so long he worked electronics and couldn't wear any jewelry but now he's in the clear. Maybe I'll post a note on the front door to remind him...

How's your knee? Good luck at Synod!

Kara

CyndiM 10-16-2008 06:35 AM

Good morning :coffee2:

Kara! It's nice to see you again and thanks for the adorable pictures :) Everyone looks healthy and happy.

Cottage - Congratulations for staying OP with all those apple yummies around. I need to pick another bushel myself while I still can.

Ruth - Sorry you will be stuck indoors for three whole days :( Are there breaks between sessions to run outside? I find that even a half hour walk around the building makes me feel a little better when stuck inside. We will miss you!

It's a meeting day for me today :( I'm going to get out at lunchtime for a walk if the rain holds off. It was so nice to be outside instead of on the treadmill. I made crunchy millet bread yesterday. It's pretty good and definitely different. My favorite part is still the baking bread smell though :)

Okay the cats are staring at me and making pathetic noises. Guess it's time for canned food. Have a good day everyone

Loriann7 10-16-2008 08:23 AM

((Kara)) I was asking about you Tuesday (or was it monday)... Glad to see you back, have missed your smiling face and posts! And what a handsome group! And I agree with Ruth, hang on to him! ;)

Cottage, so nice of you to help cindy's MIL.... have fun with the orchard and baking!

HI Ruth! Hope you get everything done you need too!

cyndi HI!

Me: Well, busy day yesterday but finally got the tail light fixed and both turning signals.

After shopping DS and I stopped at a friends to pick up dishes they had for him. I just love their golden retriever (purebred) Buddy. I told them I was going to bring him home. Sally was saying "wait while I pack his food" while her husband Joe wouldn't hear of it. I did find out they spent 500 a couple weeks ago to have buddy stay in a kennel! I told them next time bring him over! He and Jade have already met and love one another!

Today is desk day, I have GOT to get this paper clutter GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hugs to all!

beachgal 10-16-2008 08:41 AM

I'm with a student, so this is a fast  to everyone. Hope you're having a great day!

Not much going on for me...DH convinced me last night (at 10:30...we didn't get home from Theology on Tap until 10:00!!!) to go to bed instead of getting the crock pot soup ready, so we're having that on the weekend, I guess. We have tons o' leftovers, so that's fine.

I did go on a bike ride yesterday and it was glorious. Sadly, it's raining here today.

Oh, Kara, I'm so HAPPY for you that you're taking advantage of where you live! What a special trip your kids will never, ever forget! The photos are fantastic...thanks for sharing! Good to see you!

ladybugnessa 10-16-2008 08:43 AM

morning all.

i'm in dog mode totally

Kara thanks for posting pictures. good to see you and how lucky your kids are to be able to go there so young!

Harley is adjusting. he's attached to me that's for sure. Hannah is a bit jealous....

my food is pretty good but my weight is not.

rdw1 10-16-2008 08:47 AM

Good Morning all!

Cottage- good for you for staying op with all those apple goodies around!
Kara- sounds like you have a plan!!! What a beautiful family you have!
Ruth- Have fun and try to get outside some! I hate being stuck in too!
Cyndi- Hi! Millet bread sounds good!
Loriann- so nice of you to offer your help in taking care of the pup- its always a relief for us not to have to kennel our pets when we're out of town! I trust my friends way more than any kennel!

As for me, I have the day off work it has been sooo slow. Lots to do though! I need to do thank you cards from the wedding, look at flooring, decorate for halloween~my fave!, little bit of laundry, stop at Hobby Lobby, and a few other misc! busy day!

Loriann7 10-16-2008 08:49 AM

Nessa, so glad Harley is warming up! Getting new pets is always fun! Just dont neglect Hannah!!!!!

Speaking of pups.... Jade wanted out at 4 am. It was raining and she hates the rain so I let her out without tieing her up and she took off. She doesn't go far but I didn't want to wait up for her so I got in my car, drove around the block, sat in the drive for a second and she showed up! (always works).

Then at 6 the phone rang. I SWEAR I'm going to change my number and not give it to the ex! he is close by and wanted to visit with Joe so called for his number!! GGGRRRRRRRR I've only given it to him a couple dozen times!

ETA: Hi RDW, enjoy your day off..... and yes, they did say they'd bring Buddy over next time. And they are always going on trips!!!!! :). Buddy just loved me.... and when I walked in the door last night Jade was all over his scent! ;)

GONNABE165 10-16-2008 08:54 AM

hmacneil6 10-16-2008 09:20 AM

Good morning all!!! Happy Thursday!!!
Cottage - Could you do me a favor?? I need a crumble recipe to use for apples, but I haven't found one that's SBD approved. I know you bake all the time.....could you send some ideas my way?? Enjoy cutting hair today!

Kara - So good to see your happy smiley face!!! Glad to hear that things are going well for you in Germany. And great job by getting out and enjoying your surroundings. Take advantage while you can!!!!

Ruth - Sorry you've got meetings out of town for the next couple of days. I hope they're not too laborious and long. Have a safe trip!

Cyndi - Good luck staying entertained at your meetings today. Hope you're able to get out and walk.

Loriann - So what happened with the temp job??? Have a good day getting things organized in the office today!

Laurie - Sounds like you've been super busy lately. Hopefully this weekend you'll be able to calm down and take some time for yourself!

Nessa - Glad to hear that Harley is coming along. I'm sure he'll be comfortable with everyone very soon.

rdw - Thank you cards were the bane of my existence after my dh and I got married. Get them done asap. You'll feel so much better afterwords!

Gonnabe - You're exercising like crazy this week. Keep it up!!!!

Me - So my sis came over last night. While she was here she got a call that she got the job that she interviewed for on Tuesday, so dinner turned into a celebration. I'm so happy for her!!! AND we finally got the dishwasher installed. HOORAY!!! Tonight is all about Survivor. I think it's a good season so far. The weekend is shaping up nicely and the weather is cooling down. Should be nice.
And for those of you who shop at the Avenue.....I got an email notice saying all of their pants are currently on sale for $18. I know I need to pick up a couple for the winter since currently I only have 2 pair. I love clothes shopping these days ;)
Have a fantastic one!!!!
ENJOY!!!!

Loriann7 10-16-2008 09:29 AM

Heather, I didn't hear from the agency yesterday. I do know that Darren was off, but I'm glad to have today off as these bills are crying for attention, not to mention the companies wanting my money!

Glad to hear about sis's job! Thats awesome!

sophie 10-16-2008 09:40 AM

Good morning everyone

Cottage - Catching up on posts. I do so love that pumpkin/bean soup. Thanks Beachgal. Have fun making pies.

Kara - What a wonderful education your children are getting.

Ruth - Get out by Lake Ontario for a while. At least you don't have to drive across Toronto on the 401.

Nessa - enjoy your puppy. How much does he weigh now. We lost our Golden Retrieve in May after 16 years. She was such a perfect dog that I don't know if I can deal with having a puppy again.

Cyndi - the colours must be beautiful your way. We camped in Woodstock,N.H. at the beginning of Sept. but the leaves haven't turned yet. Drove all over N.H. and Vermont. Hiked a trail at Smugglers Notch and even visited King Arthur.

Me - too excited We are down to picking new counters. DH built all our cabinets from scratch and it doing everything !00% himself. Its been a long time between heart surgery, mil sick and passing away and herniated disc, etc. So picture Barefooted Contessa's kitchen - every close too it.

Pretty hard to keep on OP here.
Sophie

zeffryn 10-16-2008 09:49 AM

Girls! 14 posts by 8:30!! How am I supposed to get anything done?

Cottage - want to swing by our house? DS and DH need haircuts bad...poor shaggy boys.

Kara - good to see you around! Beautiful pictures!!

Ruth - have a fun and safe trip :)

Cyndi, Lori, Rdw1, Nessa, - Hi! Have a great day.

Gonna - I have to get my eyebrows done as well...I just can't seem to ditch DH and DS long enough to get it done!

Heather - Congrats to your sister!

-

Same ol' same ol' today. I need to make an appointment to get my hair cut....I'm almost embarrassed to go, though as my usual too thick hair has gotten really thin with pregnancy. I've been having such different side effects this pregnancy compared to my last.

Last night was a book study - it turned into a religious debate between DH and the family pastor. Thankfully they are good friends and were very respectful of each other. A family friend was at the book study as well, and made some comment to my FIL that she "thought her kids were bad" when DH mentioned that he used to be an avid atheist. Some people. Anyway, beyond that, it went well. The book, The Abolition of Man, even though it was written in *I think* 1933 was just a wonderful look at problems in modern education.

Pearlrose 10-16-2008 09:49 AM

Good morning,

No time for personals busy day at Work!!!

Kara, thanks for sharing the pictures glad to hear that you'll are doing good. I remember Rome what fun!!

beachgal 10-16-2008 10:03 AM

Hey, did y'all notice that Kara's girls are wearing chicky shirts? How cute! They're little skinny 3FCs!

Just went through yesterday's daily and wanted to post--

Barb, I hope you aren't in much pain! What a lot of tooth work. Hope it's quick and painless.

Jenski, so sorry about your tooth. Hope you get help very soon. Can you imagine those poor people back in the day when they had no meds or antibiotics??? :fr:

EofAZ, I'm so glad you liked the pics! I have a whole album with a ton more on my Facebook. I'll PM you the link. if you want, I'll post a pic of snow shoveling this winter to remind you why you're lucky to live where you are. ;)

Cyndi, your tattoo is gorgeous. Is it on your clavicle? Do you find that hard with work and stuff or does no one notice?

zeffryn 10-16-2008 10:11 AM

MurphMitch- Question for you. Our new baby is going to be delivered via c-section like his brother. I was wondering if new mothers ever request to breastfeed their babies before they fall asleep in recovery?

My LLL mentor told me it would be wise to ask, as some babies can go for hours before their first feeding.

JellyBean32882 10-16-2008 11:43 AM

Morning Girlies..

I can never figure out why I get flushed cheeks whenever I stay up all night and into the next day.. haven't gone to bed yet and my cheeks feel like they are on fire, lol..

Hope everyone is good, I'm updating my myspace from my laptop, and playing my music and on here on my desktop.. call me a computer addict.. I just cannot sleep.

tomandkara 10-16-2008 03:24 PM

Hi Loriann! Thanks for thinking of me. Good luck with your desk clutter!

Laurie, hope your soup turns out fantastic this weekend! It's definitely soup weather here.

Nessa, is Hannah a pup, too? The pic you posted yesterday was so adorable!

Nice to "meet" you Rikki! I'm vegetarian, too! Go veggies!!! :carrot:

Have fun at the salon, Gonna! Not my favorite thing to do, but definitely necessary.

Congrats to your sister, Heather! It's fun to celebrate with family!

Sophie, I love Ina Garten's kitchen!!! In fact, I could just move into her house! Hope your counter-picking goes well!

Zeff, how have you been feeling? You're almost there! Got any names yet???

Hi Pearl! Hope your day goes well!

Jellybean, I have no clue about your cheeks but I hope it settles down for you!

I'm off to bed but I wanted to check in this evening. Have a good afternoon and evening all!

Kara

Loriann7 10-16-2008 04:19 PM

Yoo Hoo, Nessa! I thought I'd share with you! I just spoke with the management and they upped the amount of dogs we are allowed to have to two! There's a sheltie I've got my eye on!

When I start getting home sick I visualize the snow packed at the end of a driveway after a plow has just gone through and it snaps me out of it. Please do PM me with the link, I would love to look at the pictures.

Well so far so good today for me. I'm on plan so far with food, took a walk during lunch and managed the longer route (3 miles) in spite of the heat. When the sun is hot I literally select my route based on how many points of shade there are on it, today was one of those “where is the shade” walks. Tomorrow I’m going to get up and do the dreadmill before I come in. It’s suppose to be 92 and that just makes it unenjoyable. If I wait until after work then I won’t put as much effort into it so I’m always better off getting it done in the morning.

I have a 5:30 hair aptmt this evening to get the roots back under control. I’m feeling a little like Peppy-la-pue at the moment. So this evening should be under control as far as food is concerned, not much time after I get home to get into trouble. That is always helpful.

Loriann7 10-16-2008 05:03 PM

Hey all, I just got a call to show up for work tomorrow. It's a temp position lasting about 2 weeks. Pay is good!

zeffryn 10-16-2008 05:52 PM

Kara - I'm feeling good...big, but good. :) Past all the bad parts of pregnancy and just enjoying it now. We're going with Connor - you should like that one especially!

Lori - Congrats!

My LLL mentor told me it would be wise to ask, as some babies can go for hours before their first feeding.

It depends on the baby. In our unit c-section babies are always brought to our nursery to be checked immediately - some need oxygen right away as their lungs are more moist. Fluid doesn't get squeezed out with labor. If baby checks out OK, we would most certainly get baby back to mom. Those first couple hours are when baby is most awake and will usually breastfeed well. After that, a lot of babies are very sleepy and hard to arouse. Of course sometimes there are other issues with baby like low blood sugar or inability to maintain their temperature. On a side note, our moms are usually not very sleepy after a c-section and find it hard to relax & fall asleep in recovery. I would let your nurses know what your wishes are. They are usually happy to comply if they are aware.

zeffryn 10-16-2008 06:52 PM

Thanks for the reply. I wanted to know if it was even possible before bringing it up to the nurses.

When I had a c-section with DS1, I was brought to recovery and DS was brought to the nursery. He checked out fine, but I was made to wait in recovery - even though I wasn't the least bit tired - for three hours! I kept asking if I could just go back to my room and see my son and husband, but no. :( DS was very hard to arouse when I was finally allowed to try to BF him.

murphmitch 10-16-2008 08:02 PM

Our patients are in recovery for close to 3 hours too, but we always take the baby up to mom that are willing and able to feed them right away.

zeffryn 10-16-2008 08:40 PM

I would have much preferred that.

When I was a kid, I really wanted to work in a maternity ward. How is it?

murphmitch 10-16-2008 09:31 PM

Very busy. Not so much fun all the time. Lots of paperwork. People can be very demanding and don't always understand why we have to do the things we do. But it's also a lot of fun. My favorite part is giving the newborn's first bath for the parents. Most people are very appreciative. And the new dad's are so cute. Sometimes they cry when they see their new baby. Sometime's it's really sad too. I have cried along with my patient in the past week.
