Make sure you contact the bureaus and have them put a fraud alert on your credit report until you get this lined out.

I have no idea where to go from here. We put fraud alerts on our credit reports as well as our son's credit report (there has been a large number of children's identities stolen! Who would do that!!). I just can't imagine where this is going to go from here. I talked to my FIL and he talked to some of his attorney buddies who said we really don't have many rights regarding this....that it is basically our word against the company's word. When I talked to the credit card company last night, they asked if my husband could have spent the money without my knowing...not likely...we haven't acquired 25k worth of things within the past year. Then he asked if my husband had a drug problem! A DRUG PROBLEM!? um...no...

I'm just waiting to see what other kinds of things we own....cars, houses, boats...

Lori - I wouldn't think much of the people with our names...but they are married, same middle initials, same age ranges...There is also another husband/wife duo with our exact same names/ages in another city about 30 miles from here.

Yes, they told us they don't handle situations without reports from credit companies.

We're chummy with the DA in this area and I put a call in to him this morning.

What a mess this is.

Loriann7 10-01-2008 09:33 AM

You know something I am frustrated with the police!

A few years ago my 14 yr old niece was having sex with her BF, so I called the police when I found out he was 19. They said they couldn't do anything unless the PARENT called!!!!!!!!!! I was furious. I thought it was mandatory statutory rape.. well, she continued seeing him and is now 20 with three kids (three different fathers).. I don't live near that sister, for a reason! :(

KO - what did your DH do?

--

I just discovered that my 2 y/o son has a credit report and has attempted (unsuccessfully, thank GOD!) to open both a discover and a visa card.

Apparently he REALLY wants new toys.

Schmoodle 10-01-2008 09:57 AM

Wow, zeff, what a mess. I fear you have some work on your hands to clear that one up. Do you have any idea how it might have happened? The really sad thing about those questions you were asked is that they probably see stuff like that all the time!

Loriann, we are going to Orlando for a week to Disney it up. Just me and my two youngest kids.

zeffryn 10-01-2008 10:02 AM

Schmoo - I'm not sure how it could have happened. Right before we were married, DH had someone from Arizona empty out his checking account using his debit card number.

I've had my purse stolen twice down here....got it back both times, but who knows what information could have been taken out of it.

It's funny..but the only way we found out about this was that my SIL called and said that an attorney had called for us earlier that day and asked her to pass along a message. NO idea how they got her information beings that she lives across the country from us.

I've been doing research all morning...this is going to be difficult to clear up.

GONNABE165 10-01-2008 10:04 AM

Schmoodle when do you leave for your vacation? I will be there again in2 weeks

Zeff new toys sounds like the perfect reason for ds to get a credit card ;) good luck with getting that mess cleaned up

KO 10-01-2008 10:09 AM

We got our credit reports and went to the cops.
one time his credit card # was stolen off the receipt from a restaurant. . .now we try to make purchases mainly in cash

CyndiM 10-01-2008 10:20 AM

We both had our bank cards compromised in teh Hannaford fiasco (someone stealing numbers while they were being transmitted). Her bank reissued her card before there was a problem. I saw mine as soon as it happened (apparently my card was shopping while I was driving home - how efficient) and the bank took care of it. It's easier if it's a big security breach I guess :(

Good luck Zeffryn!

Loriann7 10-01-2008 10:32 AM

Speaking of which... I need to start making my purchases in cash... here's why...

When I worked at a flooring company, started last november up to the third of July this year, I found out their policy to discard old files was to simply THROW THEM AWAY! MOST people buying rugs, ceramic tiles, hardwood floors use credit cards. Think about it, thats thousands of dollars a hit! The company's policy is to staple the cc receipt to their paperwork and file them away. They then proceeded to throw old files away into the GARBAGE!

When I told them that was illegal and proceeded to hire a shredding company (was way too much for me to shred myself) they questioned it with their lawyer and accountant! Who both told the owners I was right.

I told them "All those people, all those years, their credit info is now in landfills, and I know for a fact people do go through the landfills looking for information"

So all you who do not do it, when you get ANY mail with information on it, SHRED it! I even shred junk mail with my name and address on it! I've taught my son to do the same! You can get a shredder for under $30!

30 and a piece of mind is cheap in comparison to what Zeff is going through!

Zeff:

Sounds like you're already on the process- the los angeles cops are much better about responding to identity theft than it sounds like your cops are. Make sure you call ALL the suspicious credit lines on your 3 credit reports.

It's going to take 6 months or longer to clear all this up.

zeffryn 10-01-2008 10:37 AM

I talked to an attorney who mentioned that this happens frequently with illegal aliens...

I am really nervous that we're going to get stuck with these bills...who is going to believe that we didn't just rack up the bills and are now claiming fraud. Before all of this happened, we were completely debt free (well, other than our house and car note) - paid our credit card in full EVERY month. We started paying cash for everything this past January because it was easier to track our spending habits.

I feel like all the efforts that we made to remain debt free through financial troubles was just for nothing. :(

Zeff, I feel horrible for you! I hope you find someone that can help you out of this mess. I'll be thinking of you!

My DS is finally back in school. He has been sick since Friday. I knew something was wrong. The ped kept calling it the stomach flu. I demanded an XRay of his belly. Good thing I did! His colon is completely full all the way to his stomach. That explains why he wasn't eating, couldn't keep anything down and got horrible stomach pains from eating or drinking the smallest amount! The ped should know better. He has a history of this. They have never taken the steps to help us make sure this doesn't keep happening. I demanded their medical charts and I have an apt with a new doctor tomorrow.
